Thanks so much! We moved into an apartment with a bunch of locks for which we did not have the keys and my jokester daughter kept locking us all out of rooms. Thanks to you those days are over! Really appreciated.
2021, and this still works. Good job, and thanks! Just got into lockpicking, and couldn't figure how to remove the core..thanks again.. from the future.
Dude. Thank you. The first lock is what I was working on and I don’t have the removal tool but I’m a handy guy and got my door rekeyed on my own thanks to this video. Thanks so much.
Thank you very much for this! I don't know the names of locks and it took me an hour's worth of searching to find this. The third lock was spot on. I'd learned how to take apart other handles, but I couldn't figure this on out. Thank you.
Perfect. Thanks for the run down. Was having so much trouble with the Kwikset because I couldn't find the hole for the retainer, but now I see I was looking in the wrong place. Cheers!
Dude, thanks for the video. Extremely helpful. I have a bathroom Kwikset doorknob set. I used a screw driver to get the spindle out. The lock would keep turning, yet the doorknob would not lock. I discovered the cylinder at the end of the plastic spindle was cracked. There was a split. I tried fusing the plastic with the tip of a hot screwdriver, but it was a mess. It didn't work. The wall only became weaker and brittle. I tried a different technique. I wrapped very tightly Scotch Tape (cut into manageable strips before application) around the cylinder to close the seem. Then I ran a test to make sure the spindle would fit back into the assembly. If it won't fit, remove some tape until it fits. Now that it fits, test the lock by turning it to make sure it can activate the internal mechanisms. If it works, then remove the spindle again and placed it aside. I had Loctite 30071 0.85 oz Plastic Syringe Epoxy Plastic Bonder in my basement from a previous DIY project. I mixed it up using a disposable chopstick and plastic take-out soup lid. I packed the epoxy into the cylinder, making sure not to get globs on the outside. Also, I made sure not to overfill it, as the lock shaft has to reinsert back into the spindle cylinder. I made sure to get the epoxy on the inside wall of the cylinder. Next, I inserted the spindle back into the assembly. Then I installed the doorknob set back onto the door. I allowed the epoxy to cure at least 25 minutes, then tested the lock. I worked great! I would give it a day to really be forceful in turning that lock back and forth though. The more time the epoxy has to cure, the stronger it gets. By the way, this will permanently glue your spindle into the assembly, so you will not be able to remove it in the future. Should it break again, just replace the whole unit. These bathroom doorknob sets are cheap anyway. I did what I did because Home Depot was closed, and I was impatient. If you really don't like the idea of permanent, try wrapping Teflon plumbers tape over the lock shaft before inserting the spindle back into the assembly. This should hopefully allow you to remove the spindle again next time around.
Thank you so much for the helpful video! I wanted to remove the locking mechanism from my young sons' bedroom to prevent them from locking themselves in, or out of it. This video helped me do just that! Thanks a lot!
This video is better than the directions on Kwikset's website. I was struggling to make something happen using the Kwikset directions. Kwickset had sent Me their proper tool at no charge. Watching this video the pieces dropped right out and popped right back in! Thank You!! Key teeth up is proper. I know key teeth down works but give Me a break, let's do things right. TW
worked great! I did not have the tools but it showed me enough to get the cylinder out, and from there I was able to put my old tumblers into a new cylinder. I am thrilled. Thanks a lot!!!
Excellent, my additional tip - before you start, I suggest you add a small piece of masking tape on the barrel (indicating the original position of the key), then flip the cylinder 180° after you popped the cylinder out.
I was thinking of doing this job myself, but after watching your video, I concluded that it would be easier to replace the entire lock. And I'm probably not mechanically inclined enough to do it myself. But thanks for the info. Very informative.
Felicito su Excelente y didáctica explicación. Soy Profesor de mecánica y pensionado. Cómo aficionado en cerrajería me ha sido de mucha utilidad. Muchas gracias por compartir.
Wow should of watched this first. I basically destroyed the lock set. I was only after the pins anyway as the lock was old, but I could not figure it out. Thanks
Hi There was a very good deal on new Schlage privacy lock. I goy $25 one for $8. So I bought some. Now I'm wondering is there any way I can disable the locking function on some of the locks as I need to install them on the closet and pantry doors. Thank you
Great video thank you. I have a Kwikset entry and have removed the spindle though am unable to remove the cylinder. This is from a rental and I do not have the key. The Kwikset rekey kit came with tool that I have already bent trying to remove this cylinder. Any other tips? It is NOT a smartkey lock.
Thank you for all. You're helpful videos. I was asked to make duplicate keys for a door knob in my building at work. After getting keys cut three different times duplicates did not work what is going on?
appreciate your instruction on how to swap a left-handed to right-handed door lock kwikset but after doing it if I rotate the knob back and forth it unlocks. Lock switch on the inside of the door knob doesn't rotate completely not sure why it's not working now completely. I was using a kwikset 690 door knob
Fuck yeah!!! Thank you soo much man. One of my fuckin kids broke the key off in the door knob and I've never took the cylinder out before. It was cake once I found your video. Thanks again for helping me out with this
How do I remove my door knob that turns from the back plate? The door knob that I have does not have a little hole on the side of it where you can put something in it to release and slide out the doorknob please help and greatly appreciated.
Crap that 2nd one isn't a very secure lock is it. Loved the vid. I'm all about finding how everyday things work and love finding out about locks. TY for doing these vids. they have given me an infomation fix. hehe
Having trouble with the kwikset lock knob engaging. Took it apart....got the spindle out. Noticed that neither release tab seems to be spring loaded. Could this be the whole problem? Is there a way to get at the spring thats under the metal plate to see if its broken and replace it?
How wide is the kwikset removal tool and how deep is notch on the end that pushes out the cyllinder? thanks much for this great vid. it has been very helpful.
I'm trying to rekey using a Prime-Line ReKey a Lock kit and can't get past the pull spindle, turn key 60 degrees to pull the cylinder out. The spindle does not seem to pull in and out, just turns with the key. What am I doing wrong?
Good video. Which is your favorite and seems to be the best for the price? I have used Kwikset for years and they have served me well. Still all metal on the inside too. Quick key series cost more but work well and are easy to rekey.
videoarchiveman lock picking is a very important part of the skills of a locksmith. because 1 or more people misuse a word or phrase it doesn't change its meaning or definition. breaking into a house or facility you do not have permission to enter is breaking and entering, or felony trespass at least here in washington state.
videoarchiveman You know that's like assuming that candles automatically refer to arson because unattended candles can *sometimes* burn down houses, right?
Hey nice video. Question: I have a similar knob, one side (outside part) is for the key while the inside part is that twisting lock you turn 90 degrees. My problem is that the twisting lock can be pushed in too far and just spins around; it doesn't hold on to anything. Is there a fix to this or do I need to buy a new one? Thanks
kokomolock great video. What tool do you use to remove the retaining clip on schlage cylinders? I know kwikset removal tool, does schlage make something to push that clip off?
I successfully changed the patterns of the cylinder from the first type of lock to use a key that I already have, it is for my own room, when we moved here the landlord said that he lost that key so instead of buying a new lock I just re adjusted it.
I'm Not laughing at you, but you embody that one whight friend that every black person will have at one point in their life. It just brings back memories... LMBO
I have would like to thank you and say your lock smith videos are the best on youtube I do mantanice at a 200+ alf. I was wondering if you could help me thoug I have 6 pin kwickset that take a cylinder removal key witch I have but I'm having trubble geting the cylinder to stay in unless its backwords.
these videos are all based on lock picking. When I rekey key these at work I already have the key that operates the locks so you don't need to use a pick. most people watching these videos are trying to learn the proper way of disassembly and rekeying, not the illegal picking way.
Completely Unfair... That you can Only give One like per Video.... This Simple Very Informative Video Deserves at Least 30 per person... Yeah fine if you're a Locksmith expert probably didn't help you much, But if you're an "expert" and you don't see the value in it for people learning AND your looking up "Locksmithing 101" seems like someones in enough denial that their judgement shouldn't be completely trusted... ie. Thanks so much! We moved into an apartment with a bunch of locks for which we did not have the keys and my jokester daughter kept locking us all out of rooms. Thanks to you those days are over! Really appreciated.
Got a key stuck, and you helpped me pop the cylinder to unstick it. Learned ahow those locks function too. Way better than any illistration.
2021, and this still works. Good job, and thanks! Just got into lockpicking, and couldn't figure how to remove the core..thanks again.. from the future.
I was struggling to remove the cylinder from kwikset entry knob then I found this video. Works like a charm!!!
Dude. Thank you. The first lock is what I was working on and I don’t have the removal tool but I’m a handy guy and got my door rekeyed on my own thanks to this video. Thanks so much.
I watched 2 other videos but this one explained clearly how the springs need to be pried inwards to remove the cylinder.
Thank you very much for this! I don't know the names of locks and it took me an hour's worth of searching to find this. The third lock was spot on. I'd learned how to take apart other handles, but I couldn't figure this on out. Thank you.

Super helpful. Will flipping the cylinder just flip the orientation of the key, or will it change the handing also?

Your video saved the day. Thank u so much.
videoarchiveman picking isn't illegal (depending where you are) and if you get a lock with no key, you either have to pick it or shim it.
to me and many people the definition of picking a lock is illegally breaking into someones house.

How to open the maccanin of the doors
I am trying to remove the cylinder from a Schlage knob AND level door lock WITHOUT the key. Anyone out there knows how to do it? Thank you.
I meant LEVER door lock not level...
@NaplesSwampRat No problem, hope it helps someone. Thanks for watching!
Excellent job! Thank you.
So why the hell would someone pay for this type of service when they can simply remove it and install new one?
these videos are all based on lock picking. When I rekey key these at work I already have the key that operates the locks so you don't need to use a pick. most people watching these videos are trying to learn the proper way of disassembly and rekeying, not the illegal picking way.
Because a good lock is very very expensive and it's much cheaper to change the key cylinder.
@squelchtone Thanks man!!! If you have any requests just let me know and I will see what I can do.
