It's breathtaking. Menuhin was once asked why he refused to do anything against illegal copying of his recordings. He answered that if an illegal copy is the only chance for some people to listen to great music, he does not want to deprive these people of this chance.
Yehudi Menuhin is, quite simply, the best there was. In this performance he seems to conjure up the color and texture if an entire orchestra. .divine...like being baptized in sound.
Only Lord Menuhin could rise above all the critics of him disallowing Yehudi a night enjoyment to just perform spectacularly brilliant without them awaiting first imperfection in performance to slam in the newspapers around the world in that time. The Chaconne in Gstaad, was transformed into the dance it truly was meant to be unlike all those who've come and gone before this and now after when he graced, for us all in his awe aspiring mastery, the stage in 1972 he would share his flawless execution and perfection in performance to everyone, that he alone knew exactly where he was going with Bach and everyone in the virtuoso violin corp around the world were given notice that he alone for a time was with us. Shall we dance !!!
This composing is out of this world. You can feel the pain of this minor tone in every note.... it ain’t just notes that creates a melody, it’s a journey
Menuhin. Wow. Where do you start? I can't say his is the greatest chaconne of all time but I can't think of one that's better. I know - everyone has their hero, the one who "owns" this work. For me, it's Menuhin. And so it goes . . .
Who is to say where and when to vibrate? He is not playing on a baroque violin. We are not going to start an argument about performance practice. Everyone plays it differently. It is subjective. I have heard it played by many violinists. After many performances of the "Chaconne" Menuhin is the most profound and insightful of all.
Menuhin's Bach and Beethoven Concerto is untouchable. Heifetz' "Scottish Fantasy" Paganini Caprices is untouchable. His Debussy "La Fille Aux Cheveux De Lin" and other short pieces is unbelievable.
I first heard this on The Art Of The Violin. This recording captures the beautiful "Menuhin sound" very well, but I have never been able to find the full performance. Does anyone know where to find it?
@Dougal Graham But gitlis is the only chaconne rendition that really gets personal/emotional. Though my personal favorite rendition is Heifetz, Gitlis is no slouch
It's the Chaconne from the Bach D Minor partita. Actually this is only about the last quarter of the Chaconne. It's a pity if the entire video has been lost -- this is a terrific performance. Menuhin prefigures some of the best interpretations of our time by varying vibrato, dynamics, tempos to make this interesting and not just a showpiece.

+cv houston Apples and oranges. There is no f- in way someone puts more emotion and heartfelt experience into that piece after that extravaganza. Yehudi rockin' away.

I love this piece, and I find this performance my favorite; full of passion & heart unlike any other recording I've heard of this.
The way ivry gitlis Play it is also wonderfull 😁
We all know that this piece has something mystical in it... and in this registry menuhin is litterally unbeatable!
unbeatable at turning Bach into some klezmer-sounding mess
At his best ! Also the place is wonderfully suited to this man's magnificent music.
Breathtaking performance. Both the music and his stunningly masterful virtue on the violin.

Where's the first 14 minutes or so??? I want the whole thing!!!
Thanks so much for posting this! The most dumbfounding performance of this, I've ever seen...

Impressie absolutely beautiful!
The most beautiful music I know of.
I love this composition.. CHAPEAU BAS ! Maestro Yehudi Menuhin
This entire performance and some other great live renditions are now available on DVD!!!
Which DVD you mean?
The long lost gstaad tapes
1:47 always gets me, right in the heart, the fuckin soul. Damn you Bach, you made me cry again.

Breathtaking.

You listen the Heifetz interpretation? I cry when i hear he.
Yes. I have. Menuhin plays with spontaneity. "Music is spontaneous...unpredictable. "
Heifetz is certainly wonderful.
I love his rendition of "Bruch's Scottish Fantasy" It is simply superb and unsurpassed.
Menuhin's Bach and Beethoven Concerto is untouchable.
Heifetz' "Scottish Fantasy" Paganini Caprices is untouchable.
His Debussy "La Fille Aux Cheveux De Lin" and other short pieces is unbelievable.
i have the original DVD of Heifetz plays the Scottish Fantasy.
It's written by Bach in memory of his first wife, Maria Barbara Bach.
Indimenticabile ed impareggiabile...
Beautiful !
Thanks
Probably, the greatest Violin recordnig of the 20th Century.
This must be the ultimate performance of this piece!
Quanto darei per essere stata là a sentirlo
Why do we listen to music? What do I want music to do for me? This! This!!
Absolutely speechless...
UNBELIEVABLE!!
Однозначно лучшее исполнение!)
Menuhin owns his violin the way very few do ... it's almost as though he's inside it!
"help i seem to have fallen through the f-hole"
Devastating beautiful

It’s a disc called the long lost gstaad tapes
still one of the greatest! A great and old soul. Unmatched by any of the contemporary so-called virutoses...
er und Bach sind die größten
This is heartbreaking
It is indeed, my dear 2-year-ago self :)
I agree with you both.
if you like this version check out ivry gitlis's they have similar styles.
@Dougal Graham But gitlis is the only chaconne rendition that really gets personal/emotional. Though my personal favorite rendition is Heifetz, Gitlis is no slouch
@Dougal Graham If you liked his phrasing and musicality you wouldn't mind his technique.
Волшебно!
OMG OMG Unser Vater JS BACH once more shows through Menuhin why he is the best of the best and the father of Music.
Love it!
¡Maravillosos sonidos!
Wow 👌🏻
wow...
There is a God.
Where is the rest of this?!
He's like me..... even more kind and unedequate... :
bester geiger der welt !!!

e is kind and gentle and so can not be here in this world
Er ist der größte
where can i find the whole video??

y
because i dont want to listen to a 3 minute section of the chaconne by yehudi
Why chop this up and play only the end?
He was certainly not inadequate!
Frank Pam that’s snarky!
Magnus.
We didn't mention the name of the composer?
J.s.Bach partita no.2 bwv1004 chaconne
@Vancouverite39 Then, please listen to the 1934 recording and tell me :)
my favorite interpretation is of Heifetz, but i like most the Menuhin to.
now i like most the Yehudi performance. He plays with soul.
I don't see the composer's name???????
Johann Sebastian Bach (Eisenach 1685 - Lepizig 1750)

Almost as good as Ivry Gitlis
too much vibe
technically flawless, musically unsurpassed, but it doesn't feel like bach- it does not have the right amount of restraint

Oh, please.
To much vibrato
