  • We prototyped 3D printed jewelry in copper filament, had it made in precious metals (gold, silver, brass, bronze, and rhodium) and we’re able to sell them for passive income (as makers, we’re always looking into ways to sell our products or designs!). This was originally going to be an unboxing video, but we thought the backstory might spark some ideas if you’re looking to sell your own products or interested in metal 3D prints 👇 materials & links below! 👇

    This video isn’t sponsored by Shapeways, but we thought this was a really interesting way to diversify your monetization as a maker. We sell handmade products as well, but this is actually a passive income stream that allows us to focus on the design (instead of manufacturing and shipping). After so much time and thought going into our prototypes that we made in copper filament, it was SO satisfying seeing our designs made in fancy metals! Unboxing these was like Christmas morning. We got the ring made in gold, silver, brass, bronze, and rhodium, and the necklace made in gold and silver. We really love how these turned out, and we think the selling process is very intriguing. The design is often one of our favorite parts of making, so being able to put a little more time into that and not having to deal with things like shipping is super nice.

    You should put a jump ring in them and attach the chain to that. The swinging motion of the chain will eventually wear through and better a jump ring than your actual piece

    Ooohhhh. So it's not actually 3D printed in metal, it's just 3D printed and then cast in metal... I was super curious how that was even possible. But now I know

    • @bclaus0
      @bclaus0 6 лет назад +28

      Printing directly in metal is perfectly possible. But doing it this way is way cheaper if you're producing something in series.

    • @EvanAndKatelyn
      @EvanAndKatelyn  6 лет назад +39

      Yeah there is selective laser melting (SLM) or direct metal laser sintering (DMLS) or electron beam belting (EBM) that are all SUPER cool but wayyy expensive. I've gotten to play around with them some through my day job but yeah, definitely not in most people's budget. You can make things directly out of some pretty cool metals though!

      One question I have is how much it costs, and how many castings they can do out of a single object you send them?

    • @EvanAndKatelyn

      haha we miiiight be easily excited :D thanks so much for stopping by and for the nice comment!

    • @EvanAndKatelyn
      @EvanAndKatelyn  6 лет назад +5

      Since we sent them the 3D model and each one is made to order they can do infinite of the file!! The cost really depends on the material and size. The ring is an interesting one to play with if you change the size and material the price will update: goo.gl/YE94bt we just make a few dollars from each purchase so the manufacturing cost is close to the price displayed :)

      Thanks for the info! I just checked out the website and it definitely looks like a really good way to be able to make some money and come up with some cool designs without such a big time investment! I've not actually got a 3d printer, but i'm guessing all I need to do is download some CAD software like solidworks or fusion 360 and send it to them?? Thanks for making me aware of the website anyhow and you might see me on there soon!

    • @jmakes3745
      @jmakes3745 6 лет назад +1

      Do you know if they can create castings from actual psychical 3d sculptures, for example made out of clay or wood? Sorry i'm asking so many questions but you've got my brain going now!

    Very cool! Many years ago I made earings and pendants from exotic hardwoods. I tried to make every set different in some way so no 2 people saw the other with the same as theirs. It's truly incredible how many colours of wood there are and the different grain patterns help with the uniqueness of each piece. I had no idea how dangerous the dust from most of them is at the time. Thanks guys

    Making a mold negative in wax then pouring metal into it is called lost wax casting. Lost wax metal casting is one of the oldest forms of metal work. The oldest known artifact is 6000 years old!!
    It’s cool to see ancient techniques still used with modern technology.

    I was thinging of making a braclet for my wife for 10 years anniversary. I was planning that it would have ten sections with different motives in every one for each year.. but ended up not to do it because I wasn’t sure about quality of the prints... but now seeing this I think I shoud’ve have.. oh well in nine years I can make 20 part one!
    I love your desing so simple and elegant!

    • @EvanAndKatelyn
      @EvanAndKatelyn  6 лет назад +1

      20 parts are more epic than 10! That's a really cool idea. Yeah the detail is great, you do have to add very subtle chamfers to sharp corners but they walk you through it and it really doesn't take away from the look at all (we actually think the chamfers ended up making ours look even nicer!). Thank you!

    That is so cool. Have you considered doing the casting yourself (take the 3d print and then do some sort of casting)? I think Ben Uyeda from Home Made Modern (like I have to tell you who he is) did something like that with sand, if I remember correctly.

    • @EvanAndKatelyn
      @EvanAndKatelyn  6 лет назад +2

      Yeah definitely want to try that one day! It works especially well with low melt metals like Ben used. I think a really cool application for that is some sort of decor that won't be handled much

    Those rings and necklace charms are remarkably affordable. My wife has been wanting to get into making jewelry, this might be a great path to take. I really want to get into working with materials other than wood, maybe Santa will bring me a 3d printer for Christmas...

    • @EvanAndKatelyn
      @EvanAndKatelyn  6 лет назад

      +The Every Maker it's really surprising how affordably you can get these, especially comparing them to the normal cost of jewelry. If your wife is more interested in the design and ok with outsourcing the actual making then this is a really great route. Christmas is a long way away- maybe a birthday or anniversary present will come sooner! 😉

      Well, my birthday is this weekend, but I think that's already all taken care of. My wife is taking me to an axe-throwing place, which is just about the coolest thing I could ask for, that and tickets to Les Miserables. I'll take throwing axes and a little bit of culture anyday!

    Love u both, but was really hoping this vid was on laser deposition printing. If you haven’t heard of it check it out. They use metal powders and cinter it, just like a fused layer printer but with powder not filament. Way expensive but super cool. Maybe one of those companies would like to be featured in your vids... ;)

    • @EvanAndKatelyn
      @EvanAndKatelyn  6 лет назад +1

      +Maggie Rider haven't noticed any tarnishing yet but it might depend on what metals you got. I mostly wear the gold and rhodium versions since they aren't supposed to tarnish

    What was the approximate cost of having Shapeways do the silver rings? Thanks

  • @vZuijlen
    @vZuijlen 6 лет назад +1

    So they printed it in wax, casted it in bronze, than plate it in gold, so you can sell a ring for 37 dollars and make a nice profit. That is amazing an really inexpensive your own designed ring.
    So a couple of questions:
    For how much do they make a ring?
    Is the whole aftersales done by shapeways?
    Is the ringsize determined by ring in the 3d file or are they upscaling the total ring?

    • @EvanAndKatelyn
      @EvanAndKatelyn  6 лет назад +1

      Yeah for real! Especially great for smaller things since the cost is by volume. When you "double" the size of something (in scale) it's volume actually increases 8x so the price can go up quite a bit for larger items.
      The cost depends on the size and material so the best way to get an idea of cost is to go to the rings: goo.gl/YE94bt and play around with the size and materials (compare size 3.5 and 10). Just take a little off the price to see what the cost is. And yeah the whole aftersale is handled by Shapeways! For now we had to scale the ring for each size and make multiple models but they're working on implementing a feature which scales it automatically, so fingers crossed that is up soon. For now though scaling in Fusion 360 is not bad. Hope that helps!!
