    Jeff I gotta tell you, I have seen a few RUclips vids on Hawaii, but for me yours' was a standout. Not a bunch of jumping around on a beach, splashing around in the water, but a nice comfy stroll in Kona. For those of us yearning to get over there you truly helped us to take it all in as if we were actually there walking with you. Fine job, and thanks for all the information about the Islands. Mrs and me are in plans to visit Maui and Kuaui very soon.

      Keith Bell eh I beg To differ I rather see more of the island and hiking trails the actual island rather than boardwalks,8 can go anywhere for that. I want nature at its finest why I'm going there,off roading wildlife, I mean he still did an excellent job

    • @keithbell9348
      @keithbell9348 7 лет назад +2

      marie kr - no problem Marie. Perhaps while over there you could capture much of the scenic beauty of the trails and the back woods areas as you describe. I guess where I was "coming from" is that there are so many youtube vids that focus on loud music and splashing around on the beach while you see how the commentator enjoys it, and in itself thats ok. But Jeff ttakes you on a nice relaxing stroll and you hear the actually sounds of the traffic, the ocean, the people, the birds- a virtual live scene of what YOU wil experince once you take that same stroll. Jamaican, rock or even the guitar music has its place- but this was such a refreshing alternative to all that. Everything was so real, live and natural.

    Wow. It's way more developed and commercial than when I was there in the early 80s. There wasn't much there back then, but still looks like they re keeping the small town resort feel.👍

    I grew up in Hawaii and it’s amazing to see the places I knew so well as a kid but have become fuzzy with age. Our class took a field trip where we rode the submarine and then took a long stroll along Ali’i Drive, even stopping at the ABC Store. Our families’ doctor had an office in that market you passed and there was a store that exclusively sold beanie babies. That was over 20 years ago. Thanks so much for the video and burst of nostalgia.

      I grew up in Kona
      I’ve seen what happened to a beautiful small town in Hawaii
      It’s ruined
      When I grew up there the next signal was in Hilo
      There were no 4 lane streets
      There were no subdivisions
      Kona Inn was still a hotel
      Kona Hilton was the only big hotel
      There were only 70 people in my class at Konawaena High School
      Nobody surf at Banyans without our permission
      Bali Kai took over what should have been a park
      We left our surfboards in the bushes and never had to worry about them
      It was awesome
      Oh well
      Nothing lasts forever unfortunately

    Excellent video mate. My wife and I have stayed at the Royal Kona a couple of times now, and will be going back for our 25th wedding anniversary for a couple of weeks next year (before visiting Molokai and Lanai for a few days). We've been visiting Hawaii for 25 years (it's a long way from England, so we don't get there as often as we'd like), and have stayed on Kauai for 2 or 3 weeks before visiting other islands, but The Big Island has become our favourite. Your video makes me wish I was there now. Mahalo Nui Loa.

    Thanks Jeff, brings back lots of memories of the 10 yrs we lived on the Big Island, 7 of them in Kailua-Kona. Recognize most of the landmarks you showed and looks like not much changes on this sleepy island resort town. We lived about 2 mi down Ali'i Dr in the Ali'i Lani condos. Got in when they were new in 1999.

    Nice video!
    I lived in Kailua-Kona back when I was age 5 to 7 in 1960s. Our haole family moved there from California where my father was a plant foreman for Mattel Inc. toy company. Moved us out to try to open up a small 35 room motel...all hawaiian-local employed and traditional decor....but he didn't want to have to pay the tribute (demanded bribes) for permits so we moved back to California.
    We were heavily involved with the Methodist Church there (father helped build, sister played the church organ/hand organ during services & events). I learned fluent hawaiian from the church ladies...it was "forbidden to teach" native hawaiian back then but the church ladies did anyway. Went to school in tshirt, shorts, sandals....had hot chocolate or oatmeal at school for breakfast, typical lunches. We lived in a concrete house right across from the waves/beach 1/2 mile SW of the town. Then moved to a newly built housing area...and they had a huge fire one year there that almost burned down our house (it destroyed 70% of our neighborhood).
    The "famous banyan tree" is where Tamaguchi's Market used to be located. Tamaguchi had an old cola vending machine (small and medium glass bottles) that would cost 25 cents but would give back 15 cents in change...it was his "joke" on his customers! Us kids used to climb all over the tree while our parents went shopping.
    We had great memories, made great friends (all are gone), and we never made it back to visit. Once you live in unspoiled paradise, it is hard to return to how the modern world destroyed the beauty.

    I have been debating Kauai or Kona. Better value in Kona but I watched a video from Kona and he was saying how bad the vog is there. Is that true? I am very interested for health reasons.

    • @lisawalkerblodgett3055
      @lisawalkerblodgett3055 4 года назад

      Joshua Burhenn yes. A tangible way of understanding vog.... if your apartment, condo or house has carpet, and you have air flow through your home windows, in time you may notice your feet are always dirty!! The ever-so-light vog in the air can settle on your carpet and if you leave slippahs at the door, and walk barefoot in your home, your feet will get really dirty

    It’s a monosyllabic language. So pronounce the vowels all the same. AH EE OO EH OH (A E I O U ) if you always read the vowels the same with different consonants then you’re pronouncing it right. The ` means a pause and to pronounce both vowels twice separately. Forget what it’s called. But it’s really easy to pronounce Hawaiian. That’s why those guys told you to just read it ... Hawaiians had no written language so when you’re reading it it’s actually white mans interpretation of the sounds. So you can’t mess it up. It’s written for you. 🤙🏼 aloha. Hope this helps.
