Mega gyrados being one of your favorite visual designs is lovely. I too like the "half-blown-up balloon animal balloon with a face", or "pleasure toy" look

Important: It seems in this video Jimothy only ranked the megas AS THEY WERE IN GEN 6 & 7. No info about NatDex here, clearly because there's no Body Press on Aggron(THE WALL)
I think "the same, but better" is a good thing. It helps older mons stay relevant. Base form Scizor and ttar would have started dropping off hard by gen 7.

So, I used to use Mega Ampharos back in gen 6 OU quite a bit just for the heck of it. It wasn't great, but it was better than you'd think. Agility was actually a really solid move on it. It had the bulk to use it and one use made Ampharos outspeed everything but the fastest of OU threats. I'm not going to pretend it was stellar but its certainly better than something like Steelix which just does nothing.
Not to mention how the second hit wouldn't reduce seismic toss's damage, making it a free 200 damage on anything. One of the most insane mons ever for sure.
Tfw when I'm playing soccer w/ my lil cousin and nutmeg him and all his friends laugh at him, so he gets mad and pulls out his once-per-game Megger Evolution, but it's gen 6 so his Speed hasn't increased yet, so I'm still able to juke around him and score a goal. Many such cases.
Bannete should be way higher, subverts low speed with priority shadow sneak and sucker punch, gets prio destiny bond and taunt. Is actually really highly used and is ranked OU in gen 9 national dex formats
"this is more like if swampert was a big man" "i dont think that's morally sound but that's not for me to decide" thank you for the riveting commentary this is truly the insight i return for
I love megas. My main issue is that it pretty much guarantees that 1 stage or 2 stage evolutions won't be getting any further evos...like absol, mawile or sableye
I'm curious as to which tier you based the rankings on, as I was really surprised to see Banette that low. In national dex, it has a lot more options; It has a better stab option in Poltergeist, and has a lot more prankster utility with encore, swords dance, and especially destiny bond, meaning that after it hits huge poltergeist damage, it can trade in for another mon on its way out. It's even managed to hit OU in national dex because of how much value it provides.
I feel like Mega Garchomp doesn't get enough love. I've always loved running it on national dex AG and leaning into its bulk. It can tank some crazy strong supereffective moves and counterattack, as well as running fire blast or flamethrower to get rid of defensively bulky steel types more effectively than base garchomp can thanks to its extra special attack. While speed is definitely important, it's always pretty funny to have a mon bulky enough to just face tank and then reverse oh-ko its supposed counters.
Worth noting that Mega Beedrill got better in Gen 7, where it got a fourth move slot. In Gen 7, you get to use that cracked speed stat the turn you Mega Evolve so the bee doesn't have to Protect and give your opponent a free predictable turn.
mega banette does have a niche as being a slow mon with prankster destiny bond, meaning it can always trade 1 for 1 with a fast boosted pokemon and stop yourself from getting swept
Mega altaria’s movepool and balanced stats are underrated for its ability to ‘counter’ almost any utility pokemon in the meta. It has heavy 4 ms syndrome in that case its just one move away from dealing with any other mon while losing 1 part of its own util/coverage in turn
It’s interesting to see how some Megas are just “same guy with bigger stats” while others are “let’s give this an OP ability with insane stats and complimentary typing”
Idk if I'd say Lopunny is too high, more too Low if anything, Lopunny is currently the highest ranked Mega in ORAS OU and afaik doing well for itself in Gen 9 Natdex
I think the best part about Mega-Gengar not named in the video is the move Destiny Bond. With Destiny Bond Mega-Gengar takes in the WORST case ONLY 2 mons, which is ridicolous. It comes in on something weak and kills it base 170 SpA does that, it comes in on something defensive and drops Taunt on it - done. WHATEVER comes next gets either killed by it bc it's faster and hits hard OR dies through Destiny Bond. A Pokemon so powerful that in the worst case scenario takes AT LEAST 2 pokemon with it down is insane!
Absol and Mega Absol are my favorite pokemon in the game and the reason why I got into competitive pokemon in the first place was bc of Absol’s majestic mega design
mega slowbro is just such a good calm mind set up pokemon. with massive defense and immunity to crits it just wont die from attacks after a few calm minds. i even ran rest talk just to get around status
Missed the really cool thing mega banette can do where it's the only mon in the game to have both prankster and destiny bond. This gives it a niche on hyper offense where it (nearly) guarantees at least a trade in most scenarios
mega-banette's main niche is prankster destiny bond... destiny bond effect is only lost when you next attack, so +1 priority for DB then slow followup (pretty meaty given stats) attack on the following turn means your opponent usually don't have a better option than to trade something. This makes it a pretty consistent get-out-of-jail-free card. Obviously that's not *great*, but it's worth at least mentioning.
I got complicated feelings about Mega Evos, I love the concept, but I think they executed it poorly distributing it to a lot of Pokemon which didnt needed one in first place. Hence Im always happy to see Pokemon like Beedrill getting one. I yearn for a Mega Mothim honestly.
Hot take (but I did play quite a lot of Gen 7 Ubers back in the day and hit top 100 a few times), I think Mega Mewtwo X was criminally underrated in the tier and better than Mewtwo Y. Just play around with the standard set calcs against common metagame pokemon. Low Kick 2HKOs most of the tier and the coverage is insane. Being able to OHKO Ho-Oh in that metagame is truly insane
It's so odd why we decided to do this based on gen 6 OU and not Gen 7 (the latest generation where megas were officially available) or National Dex (with the latest updated movepools). You wouldn't be taking into account the Pixelate nerf for Mega Altaria for example, which made it fall out of OU entirely in gen 7. In the viabiliy rankings for gen 7 OU, Altaria is even below Mega Aggron and Aerodactyl. If we are going to Nax Dex, Mega Blastoise should be on par with Mega Blaziken or Lucario.
Something that really frustrates me about Gen 8 removing Megas is that a lot of mons got buffs that would've been AMAZING if they still had access to their megas (Close Combat U-turn Mega Lopunny please come back)

Mega gyrados being one of your favorite visual designs is lovely. I too like the "half-blown-up balloon animal balloon with a face", or "pleasure toy" look
Now that you mention it, mega glalie's stats are almost the exact same as regular salamance's stats but with less attack and hp
Big L from Jimmy for missing the "Iron Bugulis" opportunity with Scizor
Videos been out for 45 minutes and i've watched it rewirtten the script and have mastered pokemon now thank you.
16:22 THE WALL
So many megas get spikes because Spikes are a staple of the OU metagame.
although probably not that consistent in actual competitive play, M-Banette's niche as the only priority Destiny Bond user is at least worth a mention imo
Babe wake up another Long form jimothy video dropped
"One of my favorite scenarios with Mega Alakazam is trace Mega Swampert swift swim in the rain and KO them with Energy Ball". Jim - you're great, but I refuse to believe this ever actually happened.
One Mega long video. Gotta bring my snacks for this one
People: Mega Muk isn't real, it can't hurt you.
Mega Muk:
It’s a bit regrettable that you didn’t mention Mega Banette’s renaissance in gen 9 national dex due to it now learning Encore
I love the thematic design of Mega Beedrill. A super minmaxed glass cannon is exactly what you’d see in a eusocial colony where different members have different roles.
That thumbnail is amazing, Sableye just holding up a mirror for his fam Ampharos to see how fabulous it looks after Mega Evolving
Flash Fire on Mega Houndoom goes away after it mega evolves. To confirm this load up a doubles game on showdown with Houndoom and Mind Blown Blacephalon
Jim mega banette is way too low u forgot bout d bond which is 90% of the time lethal due to prankster+low speed the next turn.
I think Sand Rush on Mega Garchomp would have been a much better ability than Sand Force, and wouldn't be unreasonable at all.
Imma dig into this 1 hour video and I'm going to enjoy it.
Mega Audino is so cute, I really wish it had anything to offer
2:25 GAIN ghost immunity? Does he know Audino is a Normal type and not a Fairy? And it wouldn't be "lose resistance to fighting", it'd be "lose weakness to fighting".
The opposite mistake was made with mega pinsir " same type as base form" when it gains flying typing. 28:21
Ampharos is the best
parental bond power up punch was some HEINOUS stuff from gamefreak, cant even believe they let that exist lmao
Not to mention how the second hit wouldn't reduce seismic toss's damage, making it a free 200 damage on anything.
One of the most insane mons ever for sure.
Mega Lopunny was a menace in 1v1, as you can use Fake Out then Last Resort
Tfw when I'm playing soccer w/ my lil cousin and nutmeg him and all his friends laugh at him, so he gets mad and pulls out his once-per-game Megger Evolution, but it's gen 6 so his Speed hasn't increased yet, so I'm still able to juke around him and score a goal. Many such cases.
Bannete should be way higher, subverts low speed with priority shadow sneak and sucker punch, gets prio destiny bond and taunt. Is actually really highly used and is ranked OU in gen 9 national dex formats
"this is more like if swampert was a big man" "i dont think that's morally sound but that's not for me to decide" thank you for the riveting commentary this is truly the insight i return for
so far down Beedrill? the honeycomb will take action to address this offense.
Commenting this before we get Mega Toxapex in Gen 10 🥳
I love megas. My main issue is that it pretty much guarantees that 1 stage or 2 stage evolutions won't be getting any further evos...like absol, mawile or sableye
Not that bad, just means they'll get regionals, and hey nothing suggests that they can't get regional evolutions allow with them. Look at slowbro.
@ I hope so. I’ve always wanted some of those pokes to get new evos
@@dawntodusk8903 yeah hopefully mons like Medicham, mawile, sableye and Banette get regional evos
Duraludon exists. Yeah pikachu, meowth and eevee also exist but those are because they are extremely populair
My theory is that mega-garchomp was given those stats specifically by GF to make it not more overwhelming because, at the time, Chomp was a monster
This gives it a niche on hyper offense where it (nearly) guarantees at least a trade in most scenarios
you forgot the GOAT, mr. MEGA NIUM. Ubers-like mon, fr
I applaud you for your morally superior music choices.
mega-banette's main niche is prankster destiny bond... destiny bond effect is only lost when you next attack, so +1 priority for DB then slow followup (pretty meaty given stats) attack on the following turn means your opponent usually don't have a better option than to trade something. This makes it a pretty consistent get-out-of-jail-free card. Obviously that's not *great*, but it's worth at least mentioning.
I miss Megas, they were perfect. Dynamax and shit can get the fudge out
Folks. Scizor's new Bug/Electric Mega Evolution, Iron Bugulis, is taking OU by storm. This is insane.
Mega Camerupt with a good typing would be kinda nuts. Imagine that stat spread with the defensive profile of Kingdra.
Mega Blastoise got a lot better when it got Shell Smash. It's only playable in the National Dex format but it was good enough to get itself banned. :)
Let’s be honest folks; we aren’t ready for Mega Muk. We as a species cannot handle the majesty of Mega Muk.
Damn I had no idea at least half of these megas existed, this video is interesting for that alone
Another thing about Mega Lucario is you have to guess if its running a special nasty plot set
i imagine Mega Muk's I Love Mondays ability combines the effects of Huge Power, Serene Grace, all the Ruin abilities and more but only on Mondays
Something that really frustrates me about Gen 8 removing Megas is that a lot of mons got buffs that would've been AMAZING if they still had access to their megas (Close Combat U-turn Mega Lopunny please come back)
20:44 No God means you don't have to pray to RNJesus
