Norman was my local mp ,he is a very honourable man ,and a morally grounded man ,good to see him again 🙏🏼🤗❤️
He never lost an election until 2015 not even a local election.
I read his book titled “and what do you do?” And wish I could hear him speak in person

Defund the monarchy
In Scotland we are not bowing and scraping to anyone. Most of us don't recognise the english class system. We are not subjects. Monarchy is a thing of the past. Outdated and a waste of taxpayers money

I Chaired an event with Norman back when he was a minister. He came and took part in a debate about the future of heathrow. A rare politican of principal.

Norman Baker's book made me a republican. Never was an ardent monarchist, more of a "well they've always been there and why change it... President Blair etc." His book was a long list of facts and investigative journalism par excellence.
I loved Mr. Bakers book.
A big shout out for that book. Truly eye-opening, and I say that as someone who has been arguing the republican cause for decades.
Please be aware, it cost me £25 to enter Sandringham House and estate and saw 3 rooms plus a gallery of shotguns and a ballroom of Charlies watercolours.. Value for money? i think not.
And how does it feel to know that the whole lot was puchased through embezzled public funds that should have gone to help our forebears lead better lives?

Honestly dear Fordnan, i was on my chaise lounge for hours after i got home. I even refused afternoon tea and gave the butler the afternoon off i felt so bad. What got me through it was thinking of the warmth of our sugar plantation in the Caribbean. Oh how i'd love to be there watching all those sweaty topless locals cutting sugar cane.
We've just had the absurdity of Rishi Sunak having to seek the king's approval in dissolving Parliament before he could announce the date for a general election.

In our area duke of Devonshire got so much per ton of coal iron ore and even the oil that was found. But you still have to pay to go round his house and estate that was bought from our minerals.
I really don't think that any call to abolish the monarchy would get past either a Tory or Labour government then it would have to get past the house of lords. Maybe the first hurdle is to abolish the house of lords to ensure that that hurdle does not stand in the way. These "lords" are all either political party "donors" or "friends", unelected churchmen or the aspiring "royals" (otherwise known as hereditary peers). All of whom would protect their 300 plus pounds a day income by blocking the abolishing the monarchy.
Our constitution does not allow the house of lords to entirely stymie our lower house. Unfortunately, the monarchy gives the government the power to vet and veto debate in the house of commons, so it will never be debated, and will never therefore be passed.

As a Canadian, I kind of hope Britain manages it. When we patrioted the Constitution in 1982, we amended it such that ending the monarchy here is practically impossible. All ten provinces and the federal government have to _unanimously_ agree, and I have a hard time imagining that. In Britain, you can do it with just one bill passing in the Commons and the Lords. Mind you, I suppose you'd still need King Charles to sign it... :) Then again, that wouldn't _technically_ end the monarchy in Canada, or Australia, New Zealand, etc. So I suppose the King could just pull up stakes and move to Ottawa or Canberra or maybe Kingston. Jamaica's nice all year 'round...
