Look, this is gonna be biased as hell. But that Takara Toyota Hi-Lux is perfect. I owned a hi-lux and for twelve years that truck took me across the US, from east to west, three moves to new houses, several events, conventions, and daily commutes. though mine was Blue, this officially licensed Hi-Lux that Takara has made just sings to me a nostalgic tune, ya know the one, that when it pops into your head it won't go away. . All that said to say this, I am passing on this because that bot mode just is not right! I will stick with my AMT snap-fit model for the truck I loved so much.
The TT truck mode is nice except I would prefer it in black instead of grey. I still think the Badcube truck looks the best, though.
I think it looks fine. FansToys is G1 through an instagram filter. Takara isn't interested in making their figures look 'cool' and nor should they because the 80's cartoon sure as hell didn't and that's the aesthetic they're going for. We bemoan lack of options and then have a go at a company when it doesn't look like all the others. Give it a rest.
Except that everyone and their mother is going for the same bloody "cartoon accurate" design these days, so we just have a bunch of same-y options. Look at the Seekers, look at the Deformation Space and FansToys Blasters, even the Primes and Megatrons are starting to look like that, Trailbreaker already looks like that for the most part, and don't get me started on things like combiners.
At this point, it's more about what doesn't fall apart and break the bank than what looks good, and that's just sad.
U make a good point about what he was made too look like in the show. The problem is he should look cool not like some dude with a gut. As shown by 3 companies they also believed he should look athletic. If most designs have em with a strong look seems they were trying to make em look as he should be.
Nah he should have a gut.
"He's a stupid looking robot." Yes. Exactly this.
I still think the MMC trailbreaker looks the best in bot mode and the inclusion of the toy head makes it look so different. I ended up also getting the white variant and the yellow variant. I think I missed out on the red, but wasn't really pressed to get it... it was more of an, _"oh well"_🤷♂️
The badcube trailbreaker's knees looked too wonky to me, and although I had the mmc hoist, I was considering getting the badcube because stubby knees would be okay for a hoist character; however, once XTB's came out, that was the goto hoist for me. Admittedly, the XTB accessories were a *BIG* plus too... perhaps it was the former engineer in me and the appreciation for their attention to the hoist, Grapple and constructicons episode.
Now do the same for Skyfire
Friends like Robert D. make life worth living. Finding tools for the next 2 months is comedy gold.
Gotta say, probably unpopular opinion, but I think the Takara looks the best. Don’t know why but it just stands out for me.
Wow... 2:22 old timey football player seems like one of the best explanations of his character. In the 80s/90s I remember hearing stories of the "steel curtain" in Pittsburgh and the vikings defense of the 70s, and trailbreaker seems like he was a retired player cut from that cloth... maybe an offensive linemen on one of those teams (considering his force field ability).
For starters, I really dislike that Takara is now painting over translucent plastic pieces so that the mould can be simplified. Doors are no longer two pieces of plastic: a door frame and a translucent insert. Now the entire door is translucent plastic with a coat of paint to hide that fact. It will scratch and fade and likely not withstand the rigours of time and usage. At the price that these toys are, it's an unacceptable cheapening of quality.
Secondly, Trailbreaker has always been weird looking, but this masterpiece is the first time I have thought, "that is ugly". I have no desire to own it.
I gotta go Fans Toys on this one. Bot mode looks the best to my eyeballs. Great discussion as always though
the legend is alive
🥷🏻 My first “ Transformer” was Dark Blue “Trailbreaker”. Not sure if the package was Diaclone but it pictured a Red “Sunstreaker” and a Black “Ironhide”. It was purchased at Hook’s Drug Store. I still have it. Still love it.
Now i want to see the reaction to the Skyfire/Jetfire reveal. XD
XTB version for me. Happy with both modes, no problems with build and materials.
Not planning on swapping out.
DittO!!
I dig that artwork! 👍🏻
I'm getting it, I love it. But options are good I guess
There's something about the angle of how the windscreen meets the hood in bot mode that's just plain wrong. All the 3p toys get it right where the hood is straight up and down with the windscreen back at an angle, but the takara has them parallel to each other with the whole thing angled back. The FT and BC ones both mess that part up too in a different way where the hood sits too far out and you have these corners poking up in the air. MMC's the only one that gets that right. Now if they'd only frosted that windscreen so you couldn't see the insides and used either a nice black plastic or paint.
Thanks Bobby for helping me choose Fanstoys. Fanstoys really does look better than the Takara version.
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on Takara Skyfire.
I love my MMC Trailbreaker, I see no reason to replace it. Why in this video is the MMC one mistransformed? The truck bonnet folds and tapers in to give it a better waist, and differentiate it from the squarer chested Hoist.
I think the Badcube version still holds up well today as it captures the essence of the character. I’m still going to upgrade from it to Fanstoys but as the Alt mode is decent I’ll keep it.
The Badcube has the worst looking robot mode but the best looking truck mode.
That takara...
I know you can't polish a turd, but takara haven't even rolled it in glitter.
I dunno, I've always had a soft spot for Trailbreaker, maybe because he was one of the original Autobot cars I never owned. (I had Hoist, but to my pre-adolescent brain they seemed like completely different entities.) He seemed like a more mysterious Ironhide to me. I am in for the FansToys and the Takara MP- for the most part their Masterpiece Autobot cars have been a lot of fun. The MMC Trailbreaker has just about the most nightmarish transformation of any third party MP I've ever had in my hands. I'll never attempt that transformation again. Great discussion, Bobby and Co. Always enjoy hearing your collectives thoughts!
I have the MMC and it’s a total placeholder. Looking forward to replacing it with something. I think it comes down to build. MMC is light weight. The better built one between FT and Tak will the be permanent addition.
I agree, the MP is off by far, I thought the colors were a bad choice, he is a black truck, not a grey-ish truck. I think I am going with X-Transbots since he is readily available. If I was I was 100% sure when FT-48 Jive was releasing, or when I would get it from BBTS, I would go in all the FT version.
Yeah, I dislike the dark grey colour. They are going for a cartoon look, but when it comes to G1 carbots, I prefer a toy-based aesthetic.
I guess I'm odd because I rank Fanstoys second to last above Takara. MMC, Xtransbots, Badcube, Fanstoys, Takara. I'm taking into consideration both modes when I rank them though. Badcube us only up there because of that beautiful alt mode.
The only thing I like about the Takara Tomy is that it says Toyota on the back of the truck.. maybe the interchangeable Grill front
I guess whatever was originally planned for tomorrow's sit down Saturday will have its _regularly scheduled programming_ disrupted in order to talk about the Masterpiece Jetfire/Skyfire.
😳
fun topic
Wow, tough crowd. To be expected tho. I went with the X-transbot Aegis mainly for the altmode. Leaning more towards Fanstoys Outrider for the replacement.
I may still be on my honeymoon phase with MP Transformers. Coming from a place where all I knew is the old school G1 toys..so pretty much everything that comes out looks dope to me.... I won't lie I'm feeling the Takara Trailbreaker...but I'm also feeling the FT Trailbreaker..which I pre-ordered...I'm probably in the minority but I do prefer more toon accurate.. the way I see it is I already had Transformers that were nothing like the toon. however I won't trash a figure if its not...if the product is hot and it fits what I like then I buy it...what I do know is I don't need nor want 2 Trailblazers and the FT looks hot enough...
You're not in the minority, I think it's quite the opposite, almost every company is going for either a more accurate look or a completely stylized look so it must mean most collectors prefer it that way.
He's got Scooby Doo legs
I am surprised you guys think the MMC is SO bad. It definitely isn't awesome. But THAT bad? HAHA
Dig your reviews man but WOW! Seems this was nothing more than a Takara roasting - BSF, WTF has Takara done to you bro? Sound like it's a personal thing. LOL! I'm keepin' my head down when you give opinions on the MP Skyfire LOL! :)
The Badcube one was nice but the legs shattered on a lot of peoples (mine included). He had a die cast chest and it was painted which is what I liked about him. Xtransbots looks better to me except for the see through chest. Fanstoys will be king to me on this character even though I went ahead and preordered the Takara. I got room for several of the same characters separated in different displays.
Keep in mind that for those who prefer silver details over white or grey, XTB's Aegis was originally issued with silver. I waited until the TT toy was revealed before making my purchasing decision, and the original XTB is the one I chose to buy.
I feel like the best looking bot is FT and the best truck is Badcube. Worst bot is TT and worst truck is FT. Honestly, the most interesting toy in both modes to my eye is Badcube. Full disclosure, though: cartoon fidelity means nothing to me. As in, absolutely nothing, which probably makes my general opinion an outlier considering how popular the animation aesthetic has become.
I had the Bad Cube and upgraded to the XTB. Now I'm upgrading to the Takara. Based on the pics the Takara looks the most toon.
Look forward to skyfire discussion 😂
Why weren't any of these photos labeled?
I have Badcube for Trailbreaker and MMC for Hoist. It would probably be a better representation of the characters if I'd gone the other way around but I always liked Trailbreaker's G1 toy so getting my favourite effort (the Badcube) for that character makes me happy.
I (grudgingly - I still don't like them) put Fanstoys top. Now that we're in an era where they aren't selling out straight away, there might be an opportunity for those of us not 'all-in' on Fanstoys to cherry-pick a few we really like. Some clarity on paint finish would be nice, though - I'd've probably gone for Sheridan and whatever-their-Brawn-was-called if they'd given them the nice metallic paint treatment but when they backed down on that, there was no point paying the premium price compared to the Final Victory, in my opinion. For all I know, an "X-repaint" of both of these is just around the corner or never gonna happen.
It's a real shame Badcube aren't still around (in the truest sense of the word) - their Insecticons, Trailbreaker, Huffer and Red Alert are all great and I don't think they got the credit they deserved at the time - who's considering their transformations too complex compared to what we're getting these days!? ;-)
I would put Takara last but they perhaps deserve some credit for releasing two Autobot cars in reasonably quick succession (having seemed to have stalled on getting them done) both at reasonably sensible prices.
Interestingly enough yours is the opposite of how mine was originally. I initially had MMC for my Trailbreaker and Badcube for my Hoist. Though now I use XTB for both.
the blockiness of Badcube just works better for Hoist over MMC. XTB did a good job with makin their molds different enough between Hoist and Trailbreaker. Will be interesting to see if FT does similar there. I'm not holding out much hope that Takara sucessfully differentiates them
I have the badcude, the torso and especially the head sculpt hold up really well, but the lega were never great and look awful by todays standards. Alt mode does rock. I will be swapping it for the FT and will be done.
It look fine
Idk, I really like the takara figure with the weird proportions and the muted paint. My only problem is the colour of the windows.
Bobby "and the de-Fanders" Face!
The MMC Hoist is still my favourite.
"Doesn't look like the cartoon"
(Proceeds to show the cartoon comparison proving it looks just like the cartoon)
I started with the MMC Trailbreaker and BC Hoist. I then replaced both of those with the Xtransbots version for both.
For the upcomming ones, I may get the FT, it looks okay. But the Takara one. Nope. it's bad. I don't like its proportions, I don't like its the weird blue stuff on the side, and as soon as you bend his knees it gets even worse with those weird knee joints.
I've had MMC's Hoist, and that mold had issues. Posability was cool, concept was ok, but I really didn't like it. I went the XTB route, and I think in terms of looks I like it most. Here's the caveat: I even didn't want a trailbreaker in my collection, but when they showed it off in the took colors, I just thought "ok, this looks cool, I'll bite. The posability though could be improved. FT's is kinda ok, but I don't like trailbreaker that much to switch. And the I prefer the XTB headsculpt (I'm not saying its better or even more accurate, I just prefer it). Takara looks ok I guess, but those shoulders (the top part) are really a strange choice, as is the car hood in robot mode, the slope just doesn't work. My 3 cents, to each his own obvsly :)
Also, I wonder what you think about MP Jetfire :)
Same. I got MMC's Hoist as a gift from my kids, so I've kept it. I honestly like the overall sculpt, but the build quality on mine just isn't great-- which is unusual in my collection of MMC toys. I went with XTB as well because I felt it was the best all-rounder, if not the standout in any one area. I got the original silver-detailed one, though, which has the crappy hands.
Yeah, that was surprising: I really like MMC (primarily reformatted, but I've also got Sphinx, Azalea Stealth, and two cassettes, and they're really done well. Hoist just wasn't. I got the second edition of XTB's hoist, they fixed his hands, but didn't update other bits to fit (I think Bobby talks about this in his review IIRC). Still he's good and I'm happy with him :)
I did forget how cool is badcube truck until I saw this video. Sadly I can't afford 2 Tailbreak in my collection so I'll go with Fanstoys. Also, I can't forget that I broke my Takara Sunstraker during the first transformation, without appliying any force. The cheap plastic that the use is a shame.
I was sleeping when the 3P Trailbreakers came out. I wanted a Trailbreaker but only Badcube Speedbump works for me, and I have been waiting for one to come up for over two years. I am hoping it gets a reissue with Takara putting one out. Trailbreaker for me needs to be a heavy bot, and all the others are tall and dont look right for the character to me. I got the MMC white repaint which I love, because its not Trailbreaker.
Looks like whatever you can grab at Target and Walmart.
i really like the vehicle mode, but god damn that face is not trailbreaker at all. they just spruced up their hound headsculpt and nothing else
.............Mr. Skull did you have to buy an Erector tool set to find a 2 inch monkey wrench for Beast? ;D
This is not a review, just roasting. Im not surprised!
Have you seen the direct side view of the Takara one? Unless it is mistransformed (always a possibility with HasTak) it is completely hollow behind the windshield on the chest in front of the arms and you can see all the way through the figure. I can't understand how that can be forgiven even by the sheep.
As for my list 1. Fanstoys 2. MMC 3. BadCube 4. XTB 5. the old Toyworld one that never got released 666. Takara
"Could you pass the prunes?" 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I'm satisfied with my X-transbots version
People are definitely hyped for this Trailbreaker. Those same people are excited for the MP Jetfire that just got revealed
Those same people would be hyped if Takara sold them literal shit though, as long as it was in the cartoon.
Even tho I have XTB Trailbreaker & he may not look the best, I’m ok with him. I don’t see a reason to change. XTB Trailbreaker is good enough for me. I’m happy with him.
The legs on fanstoys seem just as long to me but fanstoys looks better in other aspects
I do agree with Takara looking the worse snd I think it's gonna become the standard if it isn't already it's already happened with the Skyfire they just revealed. Also I can't get behind Bobby's pearlescent love, that effect always makes me think knock off.
Thanks God we have 3er party!!!
I like the translucent blue.... but muting the colors to make it toon accurate... like most of the MP+ it's too much blah. Point - The Bad Cube has the sharpest black = winner.
Bad Cube also has the skinniest legs = looser :P The Takara reminds me of Hound in the transformers movie where stuff keeps falling off him... his transformation is unfinished... they half @SSed it just like Bumblebee (which I still don't have and really am not worried about because I'm still hoping for a better one).
None are perfect but I'd like the Bad Cube black paint on the Fanstoys and that would be close.
I'm keeping my Aegis because I don't feel like double dipping on a character
The proportions on the MP look whack to me.
Skinny hips and big square chest.
XTB looks better (at least in bot mode), but I'm sticking with my FT preorder from five years ago!
FT and Badcube for the win between them all. After watching this, if any buys the TT (official) version, Takara should include a container filled with prunes. Haha!
I admit I pre-ordered the Takara one because I don't have a Trailbreaker yet but I probably won't end up getting it. I think the X-Transbots one looks the best overall. It also has the most accurate vehicle mode (to the real vehicle) next to the Takara one. What I want is the original X-Transbots Trailbreaker paint job on the improved mould, and preferably not at the high price they're asking for that old mould.
I certainly don't think the FansToys one looks better enough in robot mode (and the worst, by far, in vehicle mode) to warrant the far higher price.
Regardless, whilst I don't think it's horrible, I have a ton of problems with this stupid Masterpiece Trailbreaker, but as per usual, if you don't like it, you get dog-piled by morons who have a circlejerk over the cartoon (a cartoon I love, by the way, but that's not the point). I even had some absolute idiot trying to tell me that the chin jutting out is "cartoon accurate" because it jutted out on the headshot on the model sheet (and didn't on the full image on the model sheet, which immediately makes it a moot point).
Takara's headsculpts have gone to shit. They look goofy as all hell. And I agree, none of them look like the cartoon. It's like these complete brainlets haven't even seen the damn cartoon in years. I hate it, I hate it, I hate it.
Now really looking at all of them, its the shape of the chest that really defines the character and I dont think any of them really nail it and that's why there is a debate, like the fanstoys is the closest and judging by how far off everything else is I dont think we are ever going to get something better so I am gonna take my B- looking trailbreaker and wait for another decade for someone to try to get it right =/
FT is the best for me.
In my opinion in terms of bot mode look, taking accuracy into consideration, it's FT, XTB and Takara.
Regarding the alt mode look if we go by accuracy, even though in my opinion FT has the worst looking alt mode, it's FT, XTB and Takara.
I believe Takara will win best engineering (both transformation and articulation), FT will win accuracy, design/look , materials, build. sculpt and paint. Can't speculate about who will win hardware for obvious reasons.
The Bad Cube and the MMC seem to be competing for another prize so I didn't even tried to compare them with the FT, XTB and Takara. I agree with Bobby when he says the Bad Cube alt mode kills it and I agree with Robert D when he implies the MMC bot mode looks better then the Bad Cube.
The G1 cartoon Trailbreaker bot mode was designed with a funneled hood in the chest to improve his look and proportions, it's an easy "cheat" since the animators can draw a strait hood when it transforms into alt mode. That "cheat" used by the designers of the G1 cartoon made the life of the TF action figure companies a bit harder, specially if they're going for accuracy.
The Takara chest is the worst of all the three but if you look at all the other parts individually (almost all because the bicep thickness and the face aren't that accurate) you can see it's the most accurate. It seems Takara may have run into some issues while trying to solve the chest engineering, they ended up messing up the chest and it's relation to the waist because of it.
I don't think the Takara Tomy Trailbreaker looks bad and I would prefer it to the XTB but I'm not canceling my FT preorder for it.
In my opinion it doesn't look like a cheap toy, I'm almost sure it will have very good articulation, a great transformation and a very satisfying overall feel when being manipulated.
I know some ppl had different experiences but to this date I was never disappointed by a Takara MP TF action figure.
My overall and final opinion is FT, Takara and XTB. As I said both MMC and Bad Cube seem to be trying to achieve a different objective so I'm not including them.
P.S. XTB wins price because it's cheaper ;)
I stand with Laura 👏 MMC isn't getting the credit it deserves
Nah, y'all's takes are all whack. 😏
XTB FTW.
Truck mode is the most realistic. BC's beefy tires look cooler like what you would do in the aftermarket, but XTB looks factory fresh. And that silver finish on the limbs is a joyous throwback to the G1 toy.
Initially, y'all's takes had me a little nervous that I had screwed up. I try to be open-minded, and y'all can be dang convincing. But as soon as I picked Aegis back up, I felt validated all over again. Thanks for reminding me to check it out again!
Pass the prunes 😭
I initially heavily disliked MP-56, but it has come to be second best in my eye.
- My preference is "refinied cartoon", so better proportioned G1 cartoon designs. MS-B46 is the best example of this, atleast in my eye. MP-56 has a ton of accurate shaping, and it has a chest the angles out, something the others lack. FT-25 isn't far behind in this aspect, being more heroic and svelt in appearance. FT-25's also looks less "scrunched".
- Most figures are "painted beautifully" in that the paint is cleanly applied and of good quality. Most G1 figures would really deserve such praise, unlike most live action figures, where the paint work tends to be far more intricate. I personally prefer matte or satin finishes to cherry, metallic, or chrome finishes. MP-56 has good shades of grey,, with the dark "grey" being just a tad lighter than black, unlike FT-25. The lighter grey on the limbs is a bit darker than most appearances in the show, but it isn't nearly as bright as the near white is on FT-25, which is simply too close. That said, FT-25's colors of choice do give it a wonderful contrast.
- MP-56 looks to have more points of articulation than FT-25, which isn't surprising, but Fans Toys still did a great job on it's ranges. MP-56 has a break in the shoulders to allow for a wider wingspan, but I don't fault FT-25 due to how disjointed in can look. The hips on FT-25, while their best to date, look a bit amateurish, with Magic Square being the only company to replicate Takara's hips. They look like basic swivels, rather than a cool morphing of the front hip plates.
- MP-56 is simply well priced in this day and age. I was pretty agasp upon seeing it, especially when FT-25 was just a bit higher, at a still reasonable price, given their other figures.
Other all, MP-56 has more technical superiority in my eye, but FT-25 is just too cool not to put first. Both look worlds better than MP-57. That is what true "toon to a fault" looks like.
I cant wait to hear what you think of MP57. To me there is something off with the bot. Like they took the most obscure screenshot of Skyfire in the cartoon where they are on the cliff standing next to each other and decided that was the proportions they were going with. Instead of the full like close up shots on him in the Fire on the mountain.
I'm going with FT Outrider. He just looks so much cleaner then TT.
MP-57 irks me in the knees. He has the same screwed up knee joins as MP Trailbreaker, as soon as yoy put any bend on them it just looks off
I think I'm getting the x-transbots version it looks best to me
Man, Takara is trying really hard to be the worst, and is winning! I think they started to fall apart when gave a pass to that Bumblebee 2.0 design. If that is acceptable to them as a "Masterpiece" product, then anything is possible at this point. BTW the new Skyfire is a better effort than Trailbreaker, but that doesn't mean is good. It is still subpar, compared to Phoenix.
The way I see it, the only company that made trailbreaker look cool was MMC problem is the hollow areas. If the Takara wasn't official I don't think it would be anyone's 1st pick. My list goes more like Bad Cube, MMC, Fans Toys, Takara, Xtransbot.
Funny thing is Badcube looks good but the skinny legs ruin it for me personally, its a good bot for sure. Fans toys then has great proportions above the belt but the crotch doesn't look clean, the legs are fine but where they place the leg brace doesn't look cool...the execution of making them knee pads makes more sense. Moving on to Takara, it just looks fat and the legs are too skinny and thigh brace isn't cool looking. Best feature on takara is the clean crotch and lower boots. Xtrans is a mess, it's bad. MMC to me had the right idea, proportions look great, everything but the hollow is a win but that's just the problem.
FT all the way, by far the best product. Except maybe Phoenix, TT might have them beat on that figure.
Badcube was $85.
I must shitty taste. I like the Takara. When is the Jetfire/Skyfire comparison?
Lol I like how everyone scored Takara down, it looks $h1t indeed in comparison. I have MMC and I like it, but I'm swapping it out to FT.
All the 3rd party releases look better. Hell even Earthrise Trailbreaker looks more like Trailbreaker then the MP does...
Right now the mmc is the best… until fanstoys
To my eyes, the FT and Tak bots look good. FT needs to paint theirs a deeper, glossy black to match their current aesthetic. Tak is going for a cartoony look with it's muted colors and proportions. But yeah, he is a dopey looking character. BC's bot looked the worst to me.
Mmc is weak, I like the look but mine broke easily
I respect y’all’s opinions but it really feels to me like you’re just hating on the Takara version coz it’s “cool to hate Takara.” And I know everyone has their biases, even I’m biased in that I don’t do 3P stuff, but there’s just a lot of negativity without any constructive criticism to be heard.
I agree with you. all this talk of proportions being wrong, yet when they put the TT picture next to the cartoon picture, the proportions were all about right. As for some of the other things that are wrong, its going to be what it has to be for an actually transforming figure. If they want perfection, get statues/models.
Problem is just that it's a stupid looking character. I like the Takara as much as the others, which is not much. This guy never stood out on the show. I actually pre ordered the Takara and it was the included accessories + price that did it for me. This is not a good character design no matter which figure you look at.
I feel like buying Takara is buying an expensive knock-off (crap looking toy) of a low budget piece of garbage (1984 cartoon model targeting 5 year olds) of the real article (toy). I just don't get this toon fetish, particularly with adults. You can have a modern, matured and adult interpretation of the character, or you can spend more money on a garbage hyper toon toy, than the original animators spent on the animation model it's trying to emulate! Each their own man, each their own.
Fanstoys
MMC
Takara
Badcube
XTB
...for me
While although I understand the discussion of sculpt and paint, I think that Fanstoys business practices can't be overlooked. They have had this design announced for like 2 years, and now, JUST AFTER, Takara realses there's, that's when Fantoys drops their trailbreaker. It's just Skummy, and it's not respectable.
We all know earthrise trailbreaker is the best one on the market......
I really enjoy collecting masterpiece but I exclude Takara/Hasbro completely. They don’t deserve my money after the awful films and the tacky rubbish mainline toys. Fanstoys for the win!!!
defanders
Once again Takara is last on your list. Why am I not surprised.
Takara is officially a JOKE at this point.
Bored of G1
Never bored of G1. Still better than all the other versions to me.
