Disney movies usually have an actual plot though outside of identity politics though, this movie never had that. I don't think they see the absurd as the only criticisms out there. I think they just see those ones as being worthy of commenting on, which is fair given how entertaining stupid people really are!
Yeah, it wouldn't be very entertaining to react to a reasonable critique. As there isn't really any out-of-pocket things that she said because it's really just her opinion.
I also liked how she showed the bi flag when saying disabled because it's not just making fun of bi people because that wouldn't have been that funny but she's bi so she's just making roasting herself
I had to go back and watch that because she said it so "straight" but the pictures weren't matching up and I just thought my audio was off, so it was doubly funny when I realized what she was actually doing.
Lingering after a joke is 100 times worse than a laugh track. They're not just telling you when to laugh, they're pausing and waiting for you to laugh and won't continue until you are done
Hence why I absolutely despise sitcoms like The Office. Especially when they pause after a joke and the camera zooms into the character's awkward blank stare.
That's exactly why I can't stand Family Guy. Lingering on a joke (and a joke I really don't find funny in the first place) does not make a joke funnier, to me.
@@RyoHazuki224 I don't think you understand the point of "The Office." The pauses in "The Office" are there to make the scenes feel awkward - they're not pausing for you to laugh.
Exactly, if this movie had come out in the early 00s and wasn't just a huge conservative circle jerk, I could see it actually being a pretty competent comedy. If you think about it, the idea of men pretending to be women inorder to dominate sports is kind of hilarious, its too bad the idea gets used to hate on trans people

I skipped the ad, only to hear you thank us by saying, "Thank you the viewer for not skipping the ad", which made me feel guilty and I went back to watch the ad.
As a young conservative, who was exited to see the movie, I was disappointed. After a friend who payed for the subscription watched the movie with me, we both felt empty afterwards, and we ended up watching anchor man 2 afterwards and ended up laughing more. To other conservatives, just remember, Hollywood can pander and stereotype us, while producing mediocre and uninspired films, but that doesn’t give a us an excuse to do the same. To The DW, all I have to say is go back to the drawing board.
"Tropic Thunder" would have been a great template for something like this. It was a story about everyone (except the one guy meant to be the audience stand-in) who was pretending to be someone else. Disabilities, racism, sexism, classism, etc. Also it was a movie that really was so edgy and triggering that it simply could not be made today. Finally everyone involved with the movie had a blast, and they didn't hold back or pull any punches, and it showed. "Lady Ballers" was a great concept that could have been that, but instead turned out to be a lost opportunity. I hope that they try again in the future, with lessons learned to build upon. BTW excellent review, Shoe! All of your takes were quintessential examples of healthy constructive criticism, and even offered alternatives and fixes. If The Daily Wire does respond to this, I hope that they treat it as a professional critique rather than them trying to mock it as some kind of hit piece.
almost - tropic thunder worked because of the all star acting of top tier actors. dailywire doesnt have that kind of dough. id say dodgeball would be the template. an overly goofy stakes driven plot

@HappinessDIY He basically said it was a decent enough first attempt at a comedy, but that the jokes needed more variety and a more tight runtime, alongside other criticisms.
@@jackmesrel4933 haven’t seen it obviously but imo, the best way to make a movie like this is start with the absurd story, that’s all you need. From there, they seem to make the mistake Disney makes, turning it into a lecture, exactly what they criticize. So create this story, let people connect the dots. From there just make a good, funny movie without trying to make every scene about triggering the libs. This seems like just making a right wing version of everything they complain about. @@jaydenbrough9624right. If they really want to see an agenda we should just make everyone black and gay and see how they like it. There’s a reason why in every gay friend group there’s always the token straight.
The reason they had to call it the 'global games' has to do with the olympics having stricter legal controls than Mickey Mouse. They actually had to go and reshoot every reference to them to become global games.
My favorite "Offensive" movie is Undercover Brother. A wonderful joint with some of the great black actors and comedians of it's day, and I think still holds up in todays political climate. Hell it's probably even more timely now than it was in the early 00's. Dave Chappelle is still one of the goats. Eddie Griffith gives such an infectiously joyous over-the-top performance.
I think the best way I could describe the movie is as "restrained." It could have gone a LOT heavier in making any of the points it was trying to make. For example, I would consider the main character's desire to be a winner again at any cost to be driven primarily by his desire to be attractive to his ex - after all, that's why most of us men do anything. A lot of those kinds of themes were probably too understated for most people. That also plays into the BDSM sub thing - the joke is that he's putting up with all this and it's not even paying off. It's also probably true that we're far enough along in... whatever is going on for some of the jokes to really land. I keep thinking of that Babylon Bee Comedy Is Impossible sketch, where every parody headline they come up with turns out to be a real thing. I think your Adam Sandler comparison is fair - after all, one of his primary motivators is having fun making movies with his friends. That's not really what the DW wanted from this film, but due to the difficulty they had getting the talent they wanted, that's what they ended up with. I enjoyed it, keeping in mind that it probably should have been doomed to fail. I am hoping for better comedies from the DW in the future, because at least they showed it can be done.
I think the problem is, it's just like a political first, movie later kind of movie. It's not like, a movie AND THEN some politics on the side, the movie IS the politics. I think the scenes of all the trans athletes literally just mopping the fucking floor with the cis competition was pretty funny, but then you just have the terrible, extremely boiler-plate "I gotta impress my ex-wife" story. Like sorry, which wife cares about like a high school basketball team?? The writing is legitimately terrible EVEN if the comedy can deliver at some points.
@@Sheridan2LT That part about "which wife cares about like a high school basketball team" was another thing that was subtly addressed in the movie. She didn't care about the team, she cared about the win... but only because she wanted her husband to be happy. She flat-out says that during one of their arguments. I guess the movie asked the audience to do more of the work of understanding what was happening than we're used to these days, and that's probably one of its flaws given what it was trying to accomplish.
If you really want to see an edgy triggering movie, try Blazing Saddles. It get's so silly it doesn't even take itself seriously but demonstrates just how ridiculous racism is among other things.
I cannot help but note the irony of skipping the sponsoship only to land right at the 'thank you for not skipping the ad!' message from June. I mean, you're welcome? But sorry June.... I am a shameless leech.
There’s this scene from The Simpsons (season 2, episode 9) where the Itchy and Scratchy Show becomes so sanitized and uninteresting that all the neighborhood kids turn off their TVs, go outside, and frolic. I feel like our culture needs a bit of that “Go outside and touch grass” therapy, especially when there are so many mediocre movies being churned out, and real life is stranger than fiction.
10 years ago i used to go to the movies atleast 2 times a month, the last 10 years i havent been to the movies. (and no i also didnt stream anywhere near that amount either, if i have watched 50 new movies it will be alot) So yeah...
One of the main differences between a good film and a bad one, is the theme or the message it wants to send to its audience. A good film will have the audience try to uncover what the movie is trying to say to them through the actions of the characters. A bad movie will tell you directly what the theme is and won’t let the audience try to figure out what it is for themselves, and it will instead preach their message to the audience. And that’s where it can feel cringe if the film is telling you what to think, rather than just taking you on a journey to find out how the characters transform from one belief to another over time. And as the protagonist learns to change for better or worse, that is when the audience will discover what the film is wanting to say. And The Daily Wire could have a balanced approach if they focus on making 99% story and 1% theme. Rather than making it 99% theme and 1% story.
I think the thing holding them back from making fun of both sides is that a pervasive sense of “the time for compromise was years ago, now it’s our turn” had taken hold to an extent, even if it would be practically beneficial to do so.
That and a sense of "anything offered will be exploited." Like you *could* say something bad about your side to try and offer some balance, but the other side either won't acknowledge anything bad about theirs in turn (or will offer up something dumb like "well sometimes we care *too* much"), instead jumping all over whatever you acknowledged like "See?!? Even you admit you're bad!" Something I learned as a child with my siblings that holds true even with adults.
Except they don't offend everyone, they have never made fun of their own political ideology. Libertarians are never the bud of the joke or even mentioned.

I love how there’s at least one person who criticized the movie for the actual movie rather then just hating on DW for being conservative. To be fair this is their first movie so one cannot expect Oscar material still I don’t think that conservatives playing the uno reverse card and making dumb propaganda really is the way to fix the movie industry

Matt who? ;-)
On top of that at least Disney never railed on another studio for years before doing that. So not only is this pandering but its hypocritical pandering at that.
In a world of endless, on the nose, left wing messaging in movies. The antidote? On the nose right wing messaging. This is all very tiresome.
Disney movies usually have an actual plot though outside of identity politics though, this movie never had that. It was from start to finish planned to be nothing but a political message so its not too comparable.
Disney makes fun movies but cram unnnecessary politics in, Dailywire makes movies mocking political correctness.
The difference being that Disney is not supposed to be a "politically inclined" company while Daily wire basically is.

7:05 that’s because Knowles and Cooper are the only people at that company with even an amateur level of acting experience

(and no i also didnt stream anywhere near that amount either, if i have watched 50 new movies it will be alot) So yeah...
Lady Ballers is absolutely not going to be that therapy.
Even you admit you're bad!"

To be fair this is their first movie so one cannot expect Oscar material still I don’t think that conservatives playing the uno reverse card and making dumb propaganda really is the way to fix the movie industry
In Bruges is my favorite offensive movie, a very well done dark comedy from the early 2000s, that no one that cares about money would sign off on, in the modern day 😅
God that was a good fucking movie.
Yes, that is indeed a classic. One of those movies where you know your time and money had just been very well spent.
Buncha' fuck'n elephants!
That part where they’re all coked up and Peter Dinklage is talking about the coming “race war” 😂😱
Of course they would. The majority of this culture war nonsense is strictly american. UK / Australian / European media isn't nearly puritanical as hollywood is and In bruges is about as European a movie as you can get.
Hi Shoe. I just wanted to say that, despite me seeing ground news ads several times already, your ad was just so interesting that I sat through it without even meaning to! Great job Girlboss
Saaaame!
8:25 in itself is comedy gold, throwing yourself in for 'man' and including a white guy as 'normal'.
Shoe, a normal person: it wasn't offensive at all guys.
Your standard lefty: REEEEEEEEEEE!!
Definitely watched the add because I'm a loyal viewer and not because I'm high with a cat on my lap and it was to much work.
Yeah, having a cat on your lap really limits what you can do doesn't it.
Critical Drinker interviewed Ben Shapiro about the upcoming Snow White movie that DW is making, and Ben said that their movies being apolitical is the political move. Two weeks later they released Lady Ballers.
LITERALLY lol
@@LindsayBallif"How dare a company have political messaging! Only Disney is allowed to do that! Only leftist ideology allowed ever!"
Didn’t The Ringer already do this?
