I was an early teen when I first saw Commando. I didn’t pick up on it being far fetched, or hokey, or laughing at itself whatsoever at the time. Ofcourse the humour of Arnold’s one liners is there. But essentially it’s Arnold’s incredible screen presence that makes this movie work for me anyway. Anyone lesser in the role and I think the movie likely would be forgotten. I mean look at the man, still an inspiration today.

The only thing I would have changed about this movie is to have Bill Duke cast as Bennett. As much as I love Vernon Wells as a villain in Mad Max 2, Bill Duke would have been a better physical match for Arnold in the final fight. plus he gave such a calm and menacing performance, he seemed like a better antagonist to Schwarzenegger overall.

You just have to love one of the scenes where there is a carchase. A yellow Porsche 911 is being chased by a red Sunbeam Alpine (both cabriolets). In the chase, the first crash is when the Alpine smashes into the back of the 911 quite hard, leaving no damage at all to none of the cars. Seconds after, the Alpine hits the left side of the Porsche a lot of times. But zooming out, in the next clip, both cars are totally undamaged. This epic chase ends with the Alpine crashing into the 911 making it tip over with its left side on the ground. The Alpine gets demolished crashing into a lamppost. But the epicness doesn´t end here. To be able to get out of there, seeming out of cars to access, Arnold shows his athleteism, and in one swift move by brute power he sets the 911 straight again. And the very car that only seconds before had both been hit several times by the Alpine a n d had turned flat laying on the ground on the left side just because of that crash, all of a sudden rolling around on its wheels again, the left side of the car looks just like driving out of the carshop. Well isn´t that quality action for ya!😆😅🤣

Then they go to a motel that sully had the keys to, and matrix hides behind the door while cindy answers it saying she is "roomservice", Matrix and cooke have a struggle and the pink lamp quite clearly gets knocked off the bedside table in the struggle, 5 seconds later its mysteriously back on the table again!!
Also, for a sec when hes dangling sully off the cliff, you see the wire attached to sullys leg which is holding him up.
Also. when hes throwing grenades at the guys on the island, you can leterally see the flip boards popping out the ground to lift the guys up when they go flying.
Then as hes running away and pushes the remote control to blow the place up you can see when the explosion happens that all the guys stood around are dummies.

At the end when he was beating up or killing all the solders he goes to break the on guy arm and it's clearly a fake arm he cuts the throat of another guy and no blood or tear of the skin the model buildings that blew apart in the explosion. It's almost like they cut corners too pay Arnolds salary or something or a lot was a spent on the air line place the couple Porcha's and the plane they used to fly to the island.

Personally, 'Bennett's' character as seeing himself as superior to 'Matrix' was right. But unfortunately 'Bennett's' wardrobe doesn't stand the test of time! I mean, the gloves and chain linked top? This now makes the character beyond cheesy, and in turn the film. Also, the ending, blowing up 'cardboard city' needed a bigger budget. The rest of the film is perfect! If these 2 things had been done differently at the time... The film would stand out more like 'First Blood' with gritty realism.
