Off Benny's suggestions for how to use the alphabet in Language of Drumming I actually coded a primitive version of this years ago. SO glad there's a good version out there. It is honestly revolutionary, especially as a drummer trying to get into displacements and so on. I really suggest upping the bar count A LOT so you have LOADS of time to get really into the 1e groove etc. Then you can try a straight 4/4 click but count yourself a 15/16 bar and BAM. 1/16th displacement mastered. Also advocate this for ALL your melody line friends. That way, they'll get used to keeping their placement when you're intentionally f***ing the time ;)
I'm a bassist and this app is going to be SOOOOO helpful!! Gonna order a Novation Circuit Tracks once I get my first paycheck at my new job too, excited to jump into all your finger drumming tutorials. :)
Hey, that's awesome! All of this will help with all instruments. I personally noticed my guitar playing and bass playing improving immensely since I worked on my timing with finger drumming. I used to struggle laying down a solid foundation when multitracking and now when doing that disco song you commented on it was relatively easy. So, yeah... highly recommended :-)
Thanks! Mister Benny Greb himself commented that he liked my demonstration and explanation, so I guess you got some extra confirmation from the creator himself :-)
I have been using the app for the gaps but hadn't thought of using it for displacements yet. Looking forward to practicing these exercises, looks very helpful indeed :)
Great! Have fun practicing and grooving :-) If you take your time with this and put in the work it will have a very positive impact I promise you that.
Discovered your channel and decided to stay. Subscribed already. I had a question. I'm planning to buy a Kontrol A49, I use a lot of arturia synths which support NKS and of course Kontakt too. I don't need standalone features as my laptop will be present always as I am producing/composing/songwriting/coming up with weird sounds. I do plan on sampling a lot. I use ableton live. In your opinion, Mashchine mikro mk3 or Maschine MK3 with the Komplete Kontrol A49?
If you have the money I'd go for the big Maschine mk3 with the Komplete Kontrol. You'll have some top of the line equipment and the pads will have just that little bit extra responsiveness. If money is tight I'd definitely try the mikro mk3 first because there is a chance you wont notice the difference especially when you're starting out.
Awesome video! Your channel has helped me a lot to grow as a musician! Thanks for that! I would love to see you share some more content and exercises on this amazing app👌
Hey thanks for your kind words. They mean a lot! I am slowly but surely incorporating the stuff in this app into my courses. Released a course today that trains people to bridge that gap amongst other things! Difficult stuff like this can be summarized like I did in this video but the truth is that it should probably be learned step by step over the course of a couple of months.
I wish there was a PC or web based version of this. I usually practice with headphones playing audio from my studio setup, so having an app on my phone doesn't really help me. My phone doesn't have a headphone jack, so I can't even run it to a mixer channel. Oh well, cool app. But I'll have to stick to making manual click tracks in Ableton (PITA!).
The way I used the app in this video was by installing Samsung Dex on my mac and then pluging in my phone. that way I could run the app on my computer :-) But obviously you need a samsung phone for that.
My question may not be relevant to this video but I will just say it anyway. Do you record your midi drumming as midi or as audio? I'm asking this because timing is always off when I play it back.
It's all midi, but you gotta make sure your latency is super super low. Wrote a blog post (with video) about that a while ago. questforgroove.com/five-ways-latency-will-mess-up-your-groove/
No, not at all. I found it, started using it and loved it so I'm recommending it. If you buy this app my guess is mister Benny Greb and his app developer will get some well deserved money, but not me. :-)
I haven't found a free metronome that can do what this app does. So leave gaps, shift the clicks and all in a way that you can easily tweak how many bars of clicks, how many bars of gaps or shifted notes etc. It's a real game changer and worth the money for sure. Except if you're just getting started. Then a regular free metronome is completely fine until you're ready to take things a step further.
great video! you totally got it. masterfully explained and demonstrated. all the best to you and thanks for the kind words.
Hey thanks Benny! That means a lot. This app should be used by all musicians who wants to take their timing to the next level. It works like magic.
Love this dude. Morning coffee and a Quest for Grove is like watching the sunrise.
haha, that's one of the most original compliments I ever got. Thanks!

This would be good for practicing "beat displacement," ala Dave Weckl.
Even your very kind personality makes me want to try and learn this all. Thanks a lot for the app recommendation.

Great App and great video!!! they should add another one option- the random content (in the gap zone) , so much fun, it's like a battle with A time :)
Ah yes that would be cool. And maybe something like quintuplets.
big thanks!
Tof kanaal! Goede video! Geabonneerd!
please, talk about the presonus atom sq
Great, I tried it and now I'm travelling in a Police phone booth. Thanks a lot.
Does the app yells : "not quite my tempo" ?
haha, no it does not. It just passive -aggressively starts clicking at the "right" moment :-)

Why would you not just use a free metronome lol wtf, three dollars for something that you could otherwise find free
