This channel is all about helping you to become a great finger drummer, making beats and playing realistic drums on an mpc style controller.
In this video tutorial I'll explain everything you need to know when you want to get started with finger drumming. How to set up the pads and how to play some basic grooves right away.
This is basically a condensed version of the free finger drumming course on my website questforgroove.com so if you like what you see (and hear), consider going there and enrolling in one of the free courses.
In the beginner course on my website I also give tips on what equipment and software to buy as well as advice on how to install everything, what to do when you're having problems and I'll teach you some nice tricks that make you progress better and faster when practicing finger drumming.
For those of you who already got all the basics down, I also have a completely free 6 week intense training course to take your drumming to the next level called "Grooving & Improving", so at some point that might be worth checking out as well.
Device used: Native Instruments Maschine mk3
Software used: Addictive Drums 2
And for the guitar people: The guitar is a Fender USA strat deluxe directly into the sound card, no amp, just a little ambient reverb.

Do you still use this layout till today (2024)? :) It's hard for me to decide which Layout to go with. For instance, i m far too used to having hihats purely on my right hand, while kick and Snare are on my left (that got engrained into muscle memory). Therefore i have difficulties with playing kick snare AND hihat all on one hand, like in your layout.
You’re the best teacher on this subject, shout out to you

This layout is awesome! I immediately improved my playing by at least 50% by using this. It enables introducing some complex patterns I haven't been able to do with the default Maschine drum layout. Thank you very much, subscribed for more!
Hey that's great! I've got a lot more coming up. If you want a more thorough breakdown and some more tips you can also do the free beginner course on questforgroove.com - I Also did a few recent videos on this channel about cool tricks on an 8x8 layout like the new launchpad x. I’ve been playing real drums for 14 years and this is my first year finger drumming on a Mikro mk3 and you’re videos are an invaluable resource...and it’s FREE!
I appreciate your expertise friend. I hope you have a good day.
Hey happy to read this! Hope the videos will keep serving you well!
I’ve had the Mk3 for over a year now and I love it! I haven’t had as much time as I wanted to mess with it though, but I have come a long way. I am mainly a guitar player who always loved finger drumming, so the maschine mk3 was almost too good to be true when I discovered it. For a one man band setup or a live jam or practice tool, it is amazing. Such a versatile piece of equipment. I have been searching and searching for the exact content that you are sharing (at no cost) since before I bought the MK3 and was unable
to find any content with a guitar player/finger drummer like me, until now. You’re doing a great service to us all. Thank you and keep on groovin’

So happy I found this #. Just bought maschine micro and I am exploring the world of finger drumming. My fingers are not cooperating yet, but I hope it will get better.
It will get better! Putting in daily bursts of practice of as little as 15 minutes for a couple of weeks will give you great results. I've built some courses that help with this by basically giving one small assignment per lesson so you don't have to go and build a practice schedule or anything. Just start with lesson 1, do the stuff, next day go to lesson 2, do the stuff etc.

Killer. Respekt.
some lovely guitar playing there, originally thought the drum layout was weird but within 2 mins in it made perfect sense why, dope!
Haha, thanks! I had been experimenting with layouts for a while and this one was an instant winner. Never looked back :-)
there was this one dude that develop a layout where he has his thumbs and pointer fingers in a diamond shape with his kick drum on the thumb and his snare on his index finger. ur method seems to work though
I think that there will probably be a lot more awesome layouts invented by people in the future. This is such a new instrument that there's enough room for innovation !
This layout does work great for me at the moment and it has for a couple of years. It felt natural to me from the start which is the reason I chose to continue building on it.
The Quest for Groove I see, do u think ur layout is good for like a more conventional sounds? Like making a hip hop layout with some sample chops here and there, since most finger drumming is mainly on putting on a live performance, I would say a layout for drums could be use for learning new grooves and freestyling
Yeah I think this layout is good for basically any style. I also replied to your other question about one shots and I link to a video where I use unconventional sounds for drumming and create a little song live. I explain my way of thinking behind the positioning of the sounds. You can go a long way with that: ruclips.net/video/bvabP_QRY_4/видео.html
I am using it to practice launchpad.
So it will be helpful!
Thank you!

Hi Robert, did you setup the pad layout with any HH variation? I meant, if you have the option to use like 25% HH open, 50% HH open, etc.. or you should setup more pads for these HH variatiions. I am really enjoying your free basic finger drumming course.
Hey, I mostly use one open hi hat variation per song and switch it up depending on what I want to hear. But you can also map a CC variable to one of the rotary knobs on your controller (or in my case also the Touch Bar on the Maschine) this will make it possible to set the openness of the hi hat on the fly. If you're on the questforgroove.com website in the beginner course, the lesson about pad layout at 6 minutes 7 seconds in I talk about this. Here's the url of the lesson: questforgroove.com/course/beginnercourse/basic-setup/pad-layout/
@@TheQuestforGroove I just bought my MPD218 to start the begginer course. Thank you so much for clarification
That's a great layout, cheers.
Thanks!!!
awesome dude! going through the beginners course now on your page and finding it fun. I've played a bit on Melodics but it's so expensive! and now actually finding it much more valuable actually playing in my DAW rather than on a gimmicky peice of software. I found swtiching before that I would sound great in Melodics but be way out of time when working to metronome in DAW, now getting my ear in much better. I think you may have a new Patron..
Awesome! Melodics makes reading music a lot more fun, but in the end you still want to close your eyes, listen to the music and play using your ears and your inner clock. And on top of that play dynamically (loud, soft, anything in between). My guess is at some point that requires breaking with melodics. Just like at some point you'll probably break with my lessons as well because you've evolved your playing to a point where you want to explore possibilities yourself. Basically any good musician will do that at some point as well!

You almost use the same layout than me, with this layout you can convert easyly from a real drum.
I assume you make double kick with the 2 thumbs?
Mine is more oriented real drum, i mean elements are like a right handed drummer, so for example cymbal 3 and low tom switched also i use only one sidestick and more hat for midlle closed) But i use the exact same layout for symetric kicks; hats and snare. Sorry for my english :p
Yeah this layout has not failed me for over 4 years! I do change things sometimes, for example when playing jazz, but this one works great for most songs and most styles of music.
I like a lot this channel!

Cool
Hey, loved the video! I own an mk3 as well, and I'm curious as to how you got to the screen with the labels. Oh, and are you using Drum Lab for the samples? thanks!!
Funny you happen to ask that, I'm working on a video about that right now actually. This Thursday I already have another vid planned but the one after that (I think that's June 14) I'll put that one out.
What I can tell you real quick is you need to have to get the "controller editor" program from native instruments and then set the thing in midi mode. From there you can edit all kinds of stuff including the names of the pads.
The drum software I use is Addictive Drums 2. I like how quickly it sounds good. But drum lab is cool too. Abbey road kits from NI are great as well. Doesn't really matter what you use when you hit the pads right :-)
So the complete guide to setting up your maschine in midi mode will follow in about 12 days!
BTW, I released the maschine setup video :-) ruclips.net/video/WhTXrW3TLpc/видео.html
needing this with only 5 pads at max xd but nice to meet you xd
Jejeje just keep my launchmini with 2 hihat. 1 Kick. 1 snare. 1 Crash/open hat. 1 Tom. Maybe i can sacrifice 1 of the instrumental gapes aclap ir something else. Yo make a basic drum roll?
Good video Crespo
Thank you!!
really great layout thanks. would u use chokes for open hats and cymbals?
I sometimes set up the cymbal chokes on the buttons around the pads. On the Maschine there are a lot of extra buttons so a choke can easily be assigned there so no pads are being wasted on that.
i got a live 2 for standalone reasons and i am using mute target in the program most of the time i just set the hh to cut the the oh. works fine for me but extra choke buttons would be nice but i would even prefer a double pad like on the sps@@TheQuestforGroove
I definitely need to watch this. You know your completely uncoordinated when you hit the quantize button and smoke ensues from the computer......
Hahaha
Hello! I really like your videos and they helped me start learning finger drumming. I went for a Roli Lightpad Block now since I need more portability :)
Would you recommend a mobile app (iPad for example) that can allow mapping to achieve this pad layout? Thanks!
Hey Julius. Thanks for the kind words!
I think the beat thing is to probably change the notes on the lightpad block to the corresponding drum map notes in your drum software is the best option. I saw Frank Gerlach write something about it on this forum >> support.roli.com/support/discussions/topics/36000005820
Very nice tutorial, I'm a drummer but can't play my drums in my apartment so I'm learning finger drumming. I have an old Akai MPD16 4X4 that I practice on, but I'm wondering if the newer ones a less stiff and more responsive.
I would look into getting a Maschine (mikro) mk3, Nektar Aura or maybe a Launchpad pro mk3. Much better pads. Here's my blogpost covering the latest gear recommendations (February 2021) >> questforgroove.com/gear-recommendations/
All of those have way more features than I want right and are a bit more expensive than I would want to spend right now. I use mine as a midi controller, relying on my various daws for the sounds so I really don’t need what they offer. I think I’ll just look into upgrading my mpd16. Thanks for the info though, might go that route later after I get more proficient.
Update: I easily fixed the sensitivity issue on this mpd16 using a method similar to your other video using some tape on the underside of the pads. On the mpd16 it is super simple! I just took off the cover and the pad sheet is just lying on top of the capacitive sensor film, so I was able to clean the sensor mylar, then put two layers of tape on the underside of the pads and test its responsiveness with the cover still off. Once I was happy with the results I just popped the cover back on. Really nothing to it, and now it works amazingly well.
great video
This video is amazing, the only thing I miss is that you could quickly give a hit on each pad so we could sample your samples and know the difference between a cymball1, 2 3 etc
. :) Not so important since we can use any set.
Hey! I would've gladly done this but it is actually not allowed in the user agreement of the drum software. Everything is rights free except for sharing separate samples from the library. I guess that makes sense since that's what addictive drums is selling :-)
The Quest for Groove makes totally sense, I understand o. But I would like to know the difference of cymbal 1,2,3 on your set so I can find samples that roughly sound the same. I will try to get this audition from your other videos.
Yeah so two are pretty basic cymbals. One high, one low and then there's this small little mini cymbal that makes a nice splashy reggae sound!
2:13 - * knock knock* pizza guy - any of you ladies order extra sausage.... *Music intensifies..*
Hahaha. Did you know that famous drummer Bernard Purdie actually wrote music for adult films for a while? In the 70s I guess.
Please share your samples packs for finger Drumming or best sample pack
Right now, Steven Slate FREE 5.5 is a great recommendation since it's free. I personally really like Addictive Drums 2 and especially the Black Oyster, Fairfax 1 and Funk kits.
@@TheQuestforGroove thank you Bro 🥰✌️

cool!!!
First of all Thanks for the great free resources!
One question as im not only a noob on finger drumming but also on maschine's software, how did you recreate the pad layout in Maschine? Struggling with this part, I guess I could also learn it like it is preprogrammed with the kits in their software.
Been trying to make your finger drumming excercises till then atleast ;)
No i did the pad layout using the device in midi mode and bypassing maschine software. What you're hearing is Addictive Drums 2. If you want to know how to set all of this up, I explain it step by step in my free beginner course on questforgroove.com. You do need an account, but I promise I wont spam you. It really is free.
Can you play Double bass on it? How Do the buttons response? Do they stick to the finger? Aren’t Arcade Buttons much better?
You mean double bass drum? Well, yes you can but the thumbs are the slowest part of your hands in this setup. So it might be that you have to switch the kick and snare so you can blast the 'snare' pads that will then be kick drums. ■ Arcade buttons have no velocity sensitivity so no dynamics at all. For some genres it doesnt matter but for most music it does.
The Quest for Groove thank you for the answer I almost bought the arcade fighter 64. I appreciate the answer 🙏🏻
Круто!!!
Which Addictive drum kit are you using? I've been using BFD3, which is awesome, but the kits tend to favor rock, metal and jazz. This kit sounds great for Hip-hop.
This is Black Oyster. A tweaked version of the "dry" preset.
Hi, I love your tutorials! How do I enable fixed velocity on my MK3 with AD2, please? Or are you playing without the fixed velocity?
I'm playing without fixed velocity. I actually want all the dynamics I can get. But it's easy to set up fixed velocity if you want it. Just click somewhere on the right top of the ad2 window to open the midi mapping setup and then for every sound of your kit drag the velocity curve all the way up to the max. Instant fixed velocity.
@@TheQuestforGroove Thank you so much for a quick answer! I'm going to start your premium course after my finals, can't wait! :))
What is a good drum pad hardware for a complete novice - who wants to create some accompaniment drum beats by finger drumming?
You probably want to take a look over here. My latest recommendations! questforgroove.com/gear-recommendations/
I love the guitar funky chords!!!' Could you show us the chords please?
Haha, thank you! It''s not really a guitar channel so I don't think I'll do a video about it but it's basically just this:
You play an open E string, then 3rd fret then 5th fret on that same string and then you play the 5th fret of the d and the g string simultaneously. Those are all the notes of the riff.
I sometimes fill in the empty space with some G pentatonic blues licks... well who knows. Maybe if get more requests like this one I'll consider doing a lesson about it, but on youtube it's important to stick to your niche a bit.
yoo maybe gonna start this :)
Started guitar too, are there any notes for that funky beat?
Great!!! No sorry don't have any notes. It was a random jam :-)
Oh nice! I want to learn that too :)
Hi Again! Here’s a question: I’ve seen a few finger drummers who get reasonable results drumming on a regular midi keyboard 🎹 rather than using pads. What’s your opinion on doing it that way?
I think it depends on your playing style. Some people play on an mpc in a way that resembles playing a piano. They kind of 'walk' over the pads with their fingers. So I guess if you play that way a keyboard might be a possibility.
However, I specifically developed a more percussive technique where you use your wrists and arms more. That more resembles the actual 'hitting' that drummers and percussionists do as opposed to the 'pressing' piano players do.
Hitting just feels more natural and organic to me when I try and make percussive sounds. :-)
Hi. Thank you for your great video. What you think, it’s possible study finger drumming on maschine jam? Thank you
I think if you already have one you could try for sure! My guess is the pads of the Maschine mikro mk3 and the Launchpad pro mk3 will be a little more responsive at least, but I can't say for sure.
@@TheQuestforGroove thank you
Hi. I am a beginer and have akai mpd218 for 2 weeks and using default mpc beat software. I am having problem not knowing how to move arround/to assign the pad for each part of the drum. Could posible to make a video for that. Thanks
Hey Buddy, the best thing I can do for you now is refer you to my free beginner course on Questforgroove.com >> questforgroove.com/course/beginnercourse/ I have a guide for the MPD218 and Addictive drums on there, as well as a guide for the Free Steven Slate drum kit ( questforgroove.com/course/beginnercourse/exceptional-situations/other-drum-software-besides-ad2/ ). No guide for MPC software specifically since I do not use it and don't really know how it works exactly. But I hope this will help you!
I like your technique. Can you also do 16ths on the kick, while playing straight 8ths on the hats?
Yeah for sure. Basically you jus tap the kick an hihat continuously with your dominant hand and then fill in the gaps between those hits with your non dominant hand on the kick. You can use your thumb or index finger of the non dominant hand. I think index.finger will.be faster.
The Quest for Groove cool. I will try that. But i'm used to play just the other way around, so i can do rolls with my right hand.
On questforgroove.com you can select the left handed option and everything will be mirrored!
The Quest for Groove Great thing you got going on there. Keep it going. Just now i think i'm good. If i need to stretch, i will return to your mastery.
