Yeah, you can arrange great drum loops one pad at a time, the key is to listen what you make and play around with different sounds, always having fun with it
yeah but it kinda sucks sometimes. u think about all those people who got to kill a man in iraq and your like man this is lame. like i wanna shoot a man in the face (still haven't killed anyone yet), and your sitting around doing this cowardly stuff.
@ I nearly got a life sentence in Asia for a very small amount of drugs (they turned a blind eye to it cos they knew I would either get the death sentence of life in prison). You wanna know why? Cos they government there wants to lick the Americans asses by handing out VERY strict sentences for drugs. All started by Richard Nixon. So in the Art world I don't wanna sit here licking the asses of Hollywood.
With so many clown doing this kind of videos about pads, I really loved this guy and the guy doing the interview. A humble teacher that is really a musician and a respecfull interviewer.
I don't have the words to express how much I greatly appreciate this video, the fact tht u guys care enough to share your craft in a way tht encourages use other producers n beatmakers to give us a foundation and a structure tht we can create n build from is so inspiring n keeps ppl like motivated to perfect my craft n birth my music. Thank u guys so much for this very informative instruction, I'm ready 2 get to work.
One of my favorite beat makers. Almost gave up on making beats some years back till i saw a JBLACK video and was blown away. I had forgotten how fun it was to hit those pads on my MPC. BIG UPS JBLACK!😁👍
AColdPiece it makes me wonder sometimes too, like with the talk box, use one of those in front of a millennial and they look like they’re watching an alien or something but to us back then it was one of the few things we had to use pretty much
You know that moment when your so blown away, you can't do anything else than smiling, without realizing what's going on? That's exactly how I feel watching him play those crazy hat rolls as if it was the most normal thing
Dude, your are correct about not looking at what your hands are doing once you learn the movements: this is Zen, and many writers, musicians, martial artists, and painters have learned this. Ray Bradbury wrote a fine essay on the subject.
Im a little more half way through this video and just have to point out how amazingly nice Jblack seems to be. Precise in what he is saying but chill with it. Having fun what he is doing and communicating what he is feeling. Great talented guest.
Ikr...but I actually related to that when I was younger and I did exactly this as a kid and my mother would give that eye and I already knew what that meant lmao 😂
I love your relation to hearing a song on the intercom and bangin' on the counter. You're absolutely right, everybody's got that feeling and that $auce inside them.
Yo when I was 13 I wanted to make beats but I couldn’t afford a midi so I just focused on rapping but this vid really reminded me of how I felt about beat making. Thanks for posting this on Instagram 👌🔥
I'm not a huge trap fan, but that loop at the end along with the beat sounded dope! Credit to JBlack. My piece of advice for achieveing hand independence would be to map out your beats on a piece of paper using "1 e & a 2 ..." for 16th notes and count it out loud. And always remember: if you can do it slowly, you can do it fast.
THE WAY U BROKE IT DOWN I WOULD THANKS SO MUCH I HAVE BEEN OUTTING OFF LEARNING THIS FOR YEARS CUZ HAVE 3 FINGERS ON MY RIGHT HAND BUT LOOKING AT THIS I GONNA THINK OF SOME THING TO MAKE IT WORK
I WATCHED ARRABMUZIC..ON HIS MP3...AND HE HAS 7 OR 8 MUSIC STYLES ON HOW HE PLACES HIS FINGERS..BUT AT ANY POINT...HES DOES 180 TO 190BPM...WITH HIS FINGERS...INCREDIBLE...& WHEN YOU THINK THATS IMPOSSIBLE...HE GOES EVEN FASTER THAN THAT...THIS GUY ARRAB...HAS TURNED THIS INTO A ART FORM...NOW HE IS CONSIDERED A ARTIST...HE DID A SHOW...AT A OPEN FESTIVAL...AND IT WAS SOLD OUT..ALMOST 5000 PEOPLE TO HEAR THIS CAT PLAY A MPC...LIVE..JUST ABOUT A 1HR SHOW...HE TURNED IT OUT...THEY HAD OTHER DJS PLAYING MUSIC...BUT THIS GUY WAS THE SHOW....**ONE#1**
Referring to placement of the drums, I'd definitely have my hi hat on the right simply because I'm right handed and that's my faster one. Then kick on 1 and snare on 2 for my left hand
Good video. As a music teacher, I can tell you that learning a pattern is strictly muscle memory. They do a great job starting simple but the other truck is speed and repetition. Learning new bears or adding components to a beat should be practiced very slowly and daily to build muscle memory. This is what too musicians do and this musical instrument is no different in that regard.
Finger drumming is the rap/trap producers instrument or ability they wanna show off! Nothing like banging/tapping out some 808s on a MPC! Plus it really gives you a better feel for how the drums are really played, opposed to penciling everything in!
Damn that JC Penny analogy was SO right sometimes I'm bad about trying to hard to do this or that instead of just letting go and letting it come out natural!
You can change the sensitivity pressure of the pads on all the hardware machines, mk3, push 2 etc. but yes MPCs are less sensitive true. Lots of smiles real smiles because it’s “fun” :) nice video
Great vid and some dope analogies. Loved the one about being in the mall and banging on the counter. Took me back to elementary school and banging on the desks!
"Looking at this hurts you." That was insightful. I can identify with that. // The hi-hat triplet was nice. Sounds/looks simple, but for me-not so much. I'll be reaching for that Quantize button.
There is no difference between this and playing piano. So one crucial thing that helps to build up the skill a lot but was omitted in this video for some reason is to start playing sequences at very slow tempo then to speed it up gradually as confidence comes. Such a trick lets acquire better control over each separate note played as well.
@Zach Beard another smart ass that don't know or understand music... Most piano players are like robots and some have stick so far up... It's amazing... One thing is to perform music another level is to create it. All those thing u talk about was created afterwards almost as a language so that other people would be able to try to reacreat what genius was doing at the Time with their instruments... To be able to replay mozart does not put u on mozart level...but it takes genius, to be able to and hold lot of practice... Be humble never try to knock down another men...
lolol you're making him answer so many questions he's never thought about before. I think it's so second nature he's not always too positive if he's on the one or the 3 or whatever 😂
If fingerdrumming was Kung Fu, JBlack would be a High Grand Master. I've been hip to him for 5 years now. I'm sure he's been at it longer than that. Honors to him and his mastery of the craft.
like a father showing his kid to walk ! thanks to black people for their natural god given talents like having a rythm this is simply amazing ! ps guys i have came to the conclusion that there is no way on earth em can be the best rapper when beats and rythm are so deeply implemented in black people there is simply no way ! Thanks for the Vid!
From a personal standpoint, I prefer the tactile feel of physical pads to the glass touchscreen of tablet or phone. Luckily for folks like me, you can get a midi controller in pad format like the irig pads or mpc mini for pretty cheap that's comaptible with just about everything that has usb or lightning. :)
Been working with Mpc's for 20 years , you can do beats one pad at a time, don't let finger drumming scare you from making music
Yeah, you can arrange great drum loops one pad at a time, the key is to listen what you make and play around with different sounds, always having fun with it
Doesn’t hurt to practice your finger drumming tho. Even 30 minute to and hour a week you would get much better in a year
yeah but it kinda sucks sometimes. u think about all those people who got to kill a man in iraq and your like man this is lame. like i wanna shoot a man in the face (still haven't killed anyone yet), and your sitting around doing this cowardly stuff.
@@jhowardsupporter What the fuck you talking about???🤔🤔🤔
@ I nearly got a life sentence in Asia for a very small amount of drugs (they turned a blind eye to it cos they knew I would either get the death sentence of life in prison). You wanna know why? You can tell J is such a super nice dude. Loves what he does and loves teaching others. 10/10
The no look tip is the best tip I've ever got on drumming
I KNOW RIGHT!!! I just sat here and literally did the "no look" on a pattern I have normally had trouble playing and nailed it immediately lol
Makes since though he's treating it as a instrument it's an extension of himself
Works with pen spinning tricks too :D
Same with learning piano, i always just think ray and stevie did it so its definitely not impossible
@@chekortado feeling, and a well trained ear
With so many clown doing this kind of videos about pads, I really loved this guy and the guy doing the interview. A humble teacher that is really a musician and a respecfull interviewer.
"The main thing is to have fun"

Props to JBlack he's giving away a lot of free game in this video.
4years later.. and this video still good watch. Jblack is a great dude... so positive 💪

One of my favorite beat makers. Almost gave up on making beats some years back till i saw a JBLACK video and was blown away. I had forgotten how fun it was to hit those pads on my MPC. BIG UPS JBLACK!😁👍
We used to do this all the time in the late 90's with MPC 3000 and 2000XL. That was how we liked to create our drum patterns for a sequence.
AColdPiece it makes me wonder sometimes too, like with the talk box, use one of those in front of a millennial and they look like they’re watching an alien or something but to us back then it was one of the few things we had to use pretty much
Facts but they where super bulky
You can see that this dude enjoys what he does, always always always smiling. Love the positive attitude. Following him for a long time. Thumbs up.
You know that moment when your so blown away, you can't do anything else than smiling, without realizing what's going on?
That's exactly how I feel watching him play those crazy hat rolls as if it was the most normal thing
Dude is very intelligent musically. He explains stuffs with great details. By the way great questions also! 🙌🏽
I watch a lot of his vids and my boy stay cheesin while he’s playin! Looks like he loves what he does 😁
Can't even call it a job if you love it.
Battlered 713 and that’s what inspired me so much because I’m just starting.so watch somebody else that has a love for this music
"THATS HOW I"M GONNA ADD MY SPICE TO THE INTERCOM" - JBlack for Hip Hop President
very motivational, nasty beat maker on the planet right now, and slept on, most humble being, i follow him on instagram!
Dude, your are correct about not looking at what your hands are doing once you learn the movements: this is Zen, and many writers, musicians, martial artists, and painters have learned this. Ray Bradbury wrote a fine essay on the subject.
I love this guy, like he said at the end of the video ... He is always smiling and into his beats. It's such a pleasure to watch him perform.
JBlack - quality musician and quality dude. Thank you sir!
Im a little more half way through this video and just have to point out how amazingly nice Jblack seems to be. Precise in what he is saying but chill with it. Having fun what he is doing and communicating what he is feeling. Great talented guest.
Jblack is a true master at his craft and should have a master class on finger drumming! That’d be legit!
I met this dude foe rhee first time last night at A3C. Super humble guy!!! Killed the performance.
In addition to being an amazing musician, he may also end up being the last person in history to mention JC Penney in a RUclips video.
guitar center thats musician mall
impulseMusic more like sweetwater’s show room
Brilliant
Ikr...but I actually related to that when I was younger and I did exactly this as a kid and my mother would give that eye and I already knew what that meant lmao 😂
LOL! Nice!
I love your relation to hearing a song on the intercom and bangin' on the counter. You're absolutely right, everybody's got that feeling and that $auce inside them.
JBlack is nice with it! Really good teacher. This video is awesome!
The best video! I also make my beats on the MPC Live. No DAW on the computer, just the MPC Live in stand alone mode. :)) 😁
I love the way he thinks about it: there's a hook going round the intercom and youre just going with it, vibing on the counter...
I saw another guy do this a few years back I was Blown Away, this guy right here is amazing, Man!
Yo when I was 13 I wanted to make beats but I couldn’t afford a midi so I just focused on rapping but this vid really reminded me of how I felt about beat making. Thanks for posting this on Instagram 👌🔥
JBlack is a beast! his timing is crazy on the pads
You always have great content and guests presenting it. I love your personality much love and respect from South Africa.
This is amazing. Been following Jblack for a couple of years - so good to see him in a video explaining his craft. Super grateful for this 🙏💛💫
I live in Atlanta I bought a Mpc 2 years ago and I HAVE to meet jblack omg
Holy crap. That trick of not looking at the pads for hand independence WORKS.
I'm not a huge trap fan, but that loop at the end along with the beat sounded dope! Credit to JBlack. For anybody reading this, you can set the sensitivity of the pads in Maschine via the controller app.
💀🥱
Referring to placement of the drums, I'd definitely have my hi hat on the right simply because I'm right handed and that's my faster one. Then kick on 1 and snare on 2 for my left hand
I skipped over this video a few times but glad I finally watched it, it was good!
JB got love for the beats. Great skills and love for life
I really like the approach, he plays it like an piano
finger drumming is taking i love using the push 2 and mk3 together!
I just got around to watching this video and bro you are rocking that beat I’m feeling your flow
"this is the intercom, and this is my counter". BRUH we all do that holy shit lol
LIKE A MUG!!!!!

Absolutely.
Have fun. Enjoy the process! Great lesson-thank you guys!
When I write my music, I'm always asking myself, how does this make me feel? It can be very meditative. Great video guys!
Finger drumming is the rap/trap producers instrument or ability they wanna show off! Nothing like banging/tapping out some 808s on a MPC! Plus it really gives you a better feel for how the drums are really played, opposed to penciling everything in!
See him all the time on instagram. Such a legend
what is his instagram?
Damn that JC Penny analogy was SO right sometimes I'm bad about trying to hard to do this or that instead of just letting go and letting it come out natural!
J comes across as a very decent fella, articulate too, top bloke 👍🏻
You can change the sensitivity pressure of the pads on all the hardware machines, mk3, push 2 etc. but yes MPCs are less sensitive true. Lots of smiles real smiles because it’s “fun” :) nice video
and this cat is really humble , that's is great!! blessed man
Great vid and some dope analogies. Loved the one about being in the mall and banging on the counter. Took me back to elementary school and banging on the desks!
Aspiring beatmakers should watch this video 🔥
MAD SKILLS!
Damn, dat MPC lookin sweet ;)
A true master at what he does!
This brought MAD help! Thank you so much. This is excellent for us newbies. I have the ear, but learning equipment.
"Looking at this hurts you." That was insightful. I can identify with that. // The hi-hat triplet was nice. Sounds/looks simple, but for me-not so much. I'll be reaching for that Quantize button.
You gotta treat it like learning an instrument, it takes years to get as good as JBlack. You will see improvements if you stick at it though.
kickinon Yeah, but I don’t have the focus or commitment. Always trying to do too many different things.
As an old head, got to give this kid first place in this new generation for finger drumming
These new drum machines are so cool
There is no difference between this and playing piano. So one crucial thing that helps to build up the skill a lot but was omitted in this video for some reason is to start playing sequences at very slow tempo then to speed it up gradually as confidence comes. He literally shows exactly that (starting slow) at 10:35
Zach Beard Piano guys are always bragging. It doesn’t matter if you play the piano perfectly if you can’t create music that moves people.
tompparaideri what did he say that argued that at all? He simply said a pad is nowhere near a piano and that’s flatout.
Lol no kidding. To say this is comparable to mastering piano is actually hilarious.
@Zach Beard another smart ass that don't know or understand music... Most piano players are like robots and some have stick so far up... It's amazing... When he said don't look at the pads, that actually works.
Holy cow, this is a masterclass.
Doooooooppppe . Thank you for this video. Now I want to hit my pads ASAP.

Heeeey man! Dope video ..... good interview and wicked finger drumming tips 👌👌
This dude is great. Respect
lolol you're making him answer so many questions he's never thought about before. I think it's so second nature he's not always too positive if he's on the one or the 3 or whatever 😂
I seen that
That dude is a beast. Great vid and interview bruhs.
Sooo needed. Cannot wait to start!!
Not that I know everything, but I learned a great deal of what he was demonstrating by looking up different claves the other day.
cool man cool stuff, I am just getting started on finger drumming
14:12 "so it's a lot of feeling" - the young man just had a musical epiphany
Jblack is PURE i enjoy the watching 💋♥️😎
You know your a producer when you vibe with the metronome 😂
Dude asks the perfect questions.
Dude i love the JCPenney analogy
Thank U guys for this great job well done. Very helpful
Thats amazing. The sample 😮

Great guy, very skilled
Fantastic video guys
Loved the triplet tip at 14 min
From a personal standpoint, I prefer the tactile feel of physical pads to the glass touchscreen of tablet or phone.
