In the advent of Nousagi's return, I've decided to change the name from "The Fall of Depressed Nousagi" to "The Cancellation of Depressed Nousagi" to better reflect events.
Nousagi's return means there was no fall, only a stumble.

Depressed Nousagi really did become depressed. The amount of stress on who was essentially a high school student must have been too much to handle. Also the fact that parts of the community believed a couple of accusations without actual evidence is pretty ironic considering the amount of research Nousagi did for his videos as compared to the “research” the community did to accuse him. It really seems to be the end of a depressing tale about a teenager who wanted to carve out a place for himself within the community.

I never felt like he left RUclips because of the drama. I think the idea of leaving the platform (at least, creating content regarding Vtubers for the platform) was already on his mind WAY before this drama even started taking root. For some people (including myself), turning your passion into a career just causes us to hate and resent our passion more down the line. Something that once used to be fun and enjoyable turns into something we dread and chain ourselves with tied to deadlines, high expectations from other people, and making it become our lifeline that puts food on the table. And watching back to some of his final streams, it really does sound like he has symptoms of burnout. Maybe it's for the best that he stopped making this form of content. Hopefully it'll help him regain his love and passion for Vtubers again, but most importantly, he moves on and lives a happy and fulfilling life.

It's debatable whether what Nousagi did was bad or not, but I think we can agree that he certainly didn't mean any harm. I believe "the forbidden knowdledge" shall be just that - knowledge that if you want, you can put time and effort to find, but not share. I don't really think Kiara video is that bad, because Kiara does almost nothing to hide her other identity and is still active within it. However Amelie video strikes as being a little bit not okay, since Amelia has done much to delete much of her history and it's clear she doesn't want anyone to dig in her past. Ultimately I understand nousagi, because this is the kind of information that as nousagi put it "makes you even more impressed by how incredible these girls are" would be very sad to lose.

Controversial opinion : i disaprove greatly of their "privacy right", vtuber identity should be known like any other youtuber on my opinion.
It's one thing to like anime girls but those are real people behind the avatar, maybe they don't all have your best interest in mind just because they appear as a cute anime girl. It's useful to know at least if they have a scammer past or other.
As long as their adress and real name isn't posted, everything is fair game
Edit : chill out people, if you want to fap on people there's websites for that. That ain't the point i'm trying to make here.

@@Toto-95 I can understand your opininon however I highly disagree with it.
You're correct that vtubers are real people behind avatars, buth that's the EXACT reason, why they deserve their privacy. Your argument makes sense, however I cannot see it happening often enough for it to be a big problem. Infact if this situation were to happen, then it would be in my opinion correct to not apply the "privacy rule" in this case. However, we have to rememeber: "Innocent until proven guilty". We cannot strip people of their right to hide their past just because there is small probablity that they have something to hide.
Also consider the other case. I am not going to name the vtuber I'll talk about (for obvious reasons), but there's a vtuber who deleted all of her previous accounts and social media because of an internet stalker she became very scared of. Now, would it be ok, to announce to everyone her previous identity?
My point is - "right to be forgotten" is a human right based on simple empathy and morality (and heck, it's even an official Law in EU and several other countries), that can't be broken unless there's a reason for it (like the hypothetical situation you've mentioned).
      TL;DR - it's not okay unless there's a reason for it.

I agree that it is a grey area, and it is up to debate. Any researcher would always need to dig up pieces of information, and to be truthful, must be objective as possible, no matter how controversial/sensitive it is. The dilemma I think with DN's exclusive content thus fall mainly on ethics and the internet. It was a choice whether what details to show or not in the first place and the method of data collection. The internet will always be the internet - an amalgamation of information across its servers, various points of view, and hidden information.

A Vtuber, especially depending on their fame, are small celebrities with fans who wish to know more about them. Their journey to becoming a Vtuber and the opportunities they gained and lossed as a result.
I don't consider it a moral evil for wanting to know but it may come across as invasive and rude, especially to those who hold their favourite vtuber on a pedestal.
This gets even more complicated with corporate vtubers with their inability to address topics openly.
This is a new realm of streaming we're delving into with nervous, anxiety-filled, socially awkward individuals engaging with nervous, anxiety-filled, socially awkward individuals wearing a confusing identity.
For me, I'd rather respect the barrier between viewer and streamer, delving into knowledge they provide personally rather than a third party provider. My personal favourite reveals very little about themselves and I can only assume they want to keep it that way.

huh, i didnt expect to see my tweet there.
on hindsight, it was a bit rash on my end to accuse him of fully doxxing the talents. although as far as i know, he did share alot of details thats considered private info
there are also a few things that was missed out on this video:
    1. DN wasnt just leaking the info via videos. he also had a series of newsletters and messages from patreon that he would occassionally do. his messages and even newsletters sometimes covered drama related to someone’s roomate account (a terms we use that refers to an active vtuber’s other account that is still active).
    2. DN’s video on Kiara was controversial, as one of the things he showed in the video and even linked in his description was a video of kiara’s past life having a mental breakdown. also, as far as i know, the video he linked claimed that it was taken from her facebook account as well (dont quote me on this one)
    3. before he got caught, DN actually made a third video, and it was a video about Gawr Gura’s past life. i didnt get to see it, but from what i heard based on the ones that were subscribed to his patreon, DN managed to also say which exact state gura used to live, plus the video had details about where she studied and some details about her family
    4. DN’s apology was not accepted by a majority of people, mainly because people were accusing him of just running away. the main criticism was that he didnt quit because he lost his passion for vtubers, he was quitting because he got caught in the act.
in my opinion, having a dedicated vtuber historian is a job thats somewhat on thin ice. because you would want to archive as much information about a vtuber’s life as possible, but it also makes you a holder of these forbidden knowledge. and once these get leaked, its all over for you
looking back now, i think DN did have some good intentions, it was just poorly executed and handled. like the whole argument of it being okay to be shared since this is all “public knowledge” imo is weak considering that maybe they just dont want to have these information shared to the public, or its just common courtesy for those to not mention these at all

There will always be a side of the casual audience who doesnt care about nuances or privacy of the talents and will look to find more information, which often leads going into forums that may have untrue or straight up false information that is negative. Nousagi parsed that info to "quench" the thirst of these people respectfully and safely so people dont end up believing information thats not true, and he did it without doxxing the talents.

In generally I would say the whole subject of Vtubers and their past/alternative identities is way too sensitive and always seem to incur hatred even when it is undeserved. I can see why some people would feel its shady to make videos of this kind excusive to his patreon but it also makes sense that to keep it off his main channel so its not so easy for anyone to randomly come across, especially if they would rather not know about this kind of thing.

  • @greedier-7661

While I am not rly angry at him, I understand that what he did was wrong.
    - Some of the public information were not left by them on purpose and there already existed many vtubers who were harmed by having their previous persona revealed.
    - What is more him showing their faces is big no for any youtube/twitch/etc creator if they did not do that them selves and again many creators were harmed by this type of doxing. It lets people find your real identity and where they live, it lets some people stoke them and might even result in something much worse happening.
What he did doesn't sound as bad as it actually was, not telling names and address is obvious thing but face is on close to similar level and even if nothing bad happened to them because of that, if he kept on doing that it would just take time for something bad to happen.
Also I find him leaving vtuber "rabbit hole" controversial in itself as even if he was cancelled (rly weakly I would say), it should not effect much him watching vtubers.
So him leaving, makes it look like he started to make vtuber content simply for money.
    1. He was using Pekora mascot as representation of himself, despite seemingly her not being her oshi as he not made even one video about her. So it felt like he was using her popularity to jumpstart his channel.
    2. He was pretty much drama channel, that started to make other videos only because there was not enough happening for more drama content.
3.Him starting with Jojo memes is bad sign in itself as I don't think that those were made by him and it again feels like he was trying to use them to jumpstart his channel.
4.What is more him not understanding that what he is doing is if not bad, than it is in at least gray area and over all taboo in vtuber culture somewhat shows that he wasn't rly as much part of this community,
While I might be mistaken his channel over all feels like fame/cash grab by using their fame. He was even taking donations, having patreon and extra channel stuff.
Oh my finale bad sign of him was that after his fist livestream where he started to get super chats, he suddenly started to do those livestream like every week and all of them ware also kind a sus, most of them were tier list streams, he even made 3 super chat reading streams which is rly strange by itself and finally graduation stream which the most look like cash grab as if he wanted to use people good will to take as much as he can before leaving.

The idea of putting sensitive information behind some sort of lock seems like a Grey area, but it's definitely in the category of "doing something wrong with good intentions". That information should not be aggregated and distributed, even if all he did was copy and paste what was available somewhere else, by collecting, indexing and referencing it, is enough to make it dangerous.
The information per se was possibly "non-actionable" but there are instances where it is enough to make it possible to track somehow a person.
Finally, yeah, if he returns it will be controversial, whether he comes back in the same persona or a different one.
But I do believe in second chances in the Cancelation Era, because people has to learn from their mistakes. If they return without learning or repeating them, that's it, but for as long as they show they have learned and don't make the same mistakes, then I think it's fair to let them continue instead of consistently throwing at them something they did wrong.
Growing up is essential to the human nature and moving past personal views and mistakes is necessary for living a good life and becoming a contributing member of society. Without giving the chance to act upon this learning is the same as expecting people to be perfect from the get go and if DN is just about to start his university education, that means he has way too much to learn about.. Everything! Life, himself, society, social faux-pas and many other lessons that come with age and by screwing up.

There is also a point to be made that if the correct information is gather in "hidden in plain sight" place (like on patreon, where people who really want to find out can easily find but it's hidden enough not to be spread all around the internet and for someone to find by mistake) it could help with weeding out this fake stuff and the miss information. as someone who went in and tried to find out more info by scouring the net, there is a lot of fake stuff out there that could be dangerous to the talents (and other people) and that could create a lot of drama (like completely fake stories about their past lives or linking the wrong people to a vtuber). his archive could have been a necessary evil to avoid worse stuff

  • @tbk2010

Here is what I think we can learn from this:
You can, legally and morally, talk about public information on vtuber talent and linking their different personas, as long you do so in a respectful and responsible manner.
However, you can't do it while being perceived as part of the general fan community, and you can't do it in their spaces. Unlike reddit or discord, RUclips and Twitter have no clear separation of communities, and being used by actual v-tubers makes them part of "their" space. If you do this kind of content you are persona non grata on those platforms, even if you post your actual "doxxing" stuff elsewhere.

Either way, thanks for letting me know. I had no idea.

To be honest, I'm on the camp of "do not touch vtubers past life" and disappointed in him. But Im willing to give him the benefit of a doubt just because his readily available contents on his channel is quality contents, full of well researched details and care about the object of the topic. And well, he mentioned that he is going to university soon, that means we can assume that he is around 17 - 19 y/o which is understandable if his way of thinking, underestimating his influence and overestimating his audience, is not matured yet. I personally would love to see him come back someday but by the time he's back I bet there is another channel as dedicated to vtubers as his, or maybe even more dedicated.

I’m with you on that. I have nothing against people investigating on their own for personal interest, but the moment you post about their past lives publicly, and in this case charge money for it, that’s crossing the line for me. Dude went way too far and I’m ashamed I used to sub to him before learning all this.

@@trevorweisberg8470 Well, in the eyes of middle aged man like me, he is still immature so that is why I don't really get that feeling of shame you experienced. I give him a benefit of a doubt about him not having malicious intent even though he really underestimated the internet. The one statement that made me think that is, paraphrasing of course, "I can recover if I play my cards right", "I know all about drama, this fire will died out in a couple of weeks". But then I have to commend him for realizing that, "this stigma will stick with me wherever I go". In the end him leaving the scene right now is the best decision for all parties.

I still don’t really know what to think about depressed nousagi. I did enjoy his videos and they were all very well researched, but the past life stuff is always going to be a grey area no matter how respectful you try to be with it.
Also to be honest I was kind of looking for a reason to unsubscribe from him, I’d hopped into a few of his streams before and he had this slideshow of memes that I found to be kind of disgusting? They weren’t even funny and actively made me stop watching because of how off putting to me they were. It really soured my opinion of him before all of this drama even happened.

For me it depends. If the information that he is giving out is something that a vtuber is actively trying to hide (stuff they deleted for example), I think it’s inconsiderate and a little weird to dig into their past like some kind of detective recovering scraps from the internet.
I think people’s privacy should be respected. If people want to do their own research, fine. But publicizing research to an audience if it’s stuff the vtuber doesn’t want known is probably bad. Photographs of them irl should have never been posted, that’s a major breach of privacy for someone that is trying to stay anonymous. Those photographs could be considered doxxing, it was not ok.
Overall, I can’t say I approve of his actions. I think he went a little too far. People shouldn’t have lied about him though, obviously not justified.

I myself find it stupid to post someone’s identity while there (in simple terms) hiding it. This is probably due to a reason and we don’t know what that is for all we know some of these vtubers could go and be so insecure about themselves that they will try to avoid most things which could lead to loneliness and other nasty effects. So yes in my eyes it is stupid to do something like that and even if the vtuber just likes to be a vtuber and is fine with there face seen it is still a bit sad because i would atleast think that they would have wanted to reveal that themselves. So my take on it is that he went to far. With that said i hope kiara and wattson are fine and wish all of you good luck and have a nice day
