1990, UK. The initial euphoria of the acid house orbital raves had waned after a government crackdown on illegal ‘pay parties’. The energy, creativity and radical promise of the ‘second summer of love” assimilated into clubland, or commercial ‘rip-off raves’ often charging £50 a ticket. And with the recession beginning to bite, the dream seemed over. But a new underground began to emerge with a radical idea..
Sound systems, such as Nottingham’s anarchic collective DiY, with their ‘everyone welcome’ attitude, London’s Fund-e-Mental and Spiral Tribe, with their cult-like image, and acid house party pioneers Tonka begin to appear across the country, in clubs, small squats and ‘broken’ warehouses as an antidote to mainstream clubbing.
Meanwhile..
In the west country, despite being badly bruised by Thatcher's attempts to destroy their lifestyle at the "Battle of the Beanfield", members of the travelling community, such as Circus Warp and the Free Party People had the know-how, the spaces and the infrastructure to enable amazing free parties, under the stars.
And at the Travellers free field at Glastonbury 1990 - the anarchic free spirit of the travellers and the incredible music and energy of the acid house generation came together for the first time and something new was born.
With more and more sound systems being formed including Bedlam, LSDiezil, Adrenalin, Techno Travellers and many others these free parties / festivals began growing in numbers from small traveller family events of hundreds, to thousands, to tens of thousands, through word of mouth alone throughout 1990-1992. This culminated at Castlemorton Common in May 1992.
Headline TV news for a week, between 20-60,000 partied for 7 days.
But now the British establishment, and the media had its latest folk devils, promising to middle England to crush the movement out of existence, leading to violence and arrests (Spiral Tribe being arrested at Castlemorton) and draconian changes in the law itself with the Criminal Justice Bill in 1994.
Many travelling communities found their life hard to continue in the UK after the Criminal Justice Act was past, and the pressure from the state would also push Spiral Tribe, Bedlam and others across the newly formed EU, creating gigantic Teknival utopias dwarfing the size of the UK free festivals. DiY meanwhile, alongside their regular club
nights, kept the free parties going in the north, inspiring a host of other local sound systems such as Smokescreen, before heading out across the world, including Thailand, Ibiza and the west coast of the USA, where they met ex-Tonka DJs with a scene of their own. The scene would fracture into a myriad of disparate sub genres and scenes, with the unity of those initial years seemingly gone.
Now 30 years later with new laws criminalising trespass, protest and gathering in the UK, Europe and Beyond, and with the 30th anniversary of the Criminal Justice Bill's introduction, the story is as relevant as ever.
Thanks so much for all the support coming to see the film and voting for us - we won the honourable mention award and also the Audience award as part of Doc N Roll. Hopefully can get the film out there even further this year!

@@buzby303 We're strill trying to get clearance for our licenses for a full release I'm afraid - we're working on it!!
Quality, I used to go to the Lazy House free partys around Devon. Fun Times.
We hear the middle-class, Balearic / acid house story all the time... By contrast however, the time when the traveller communities and ravers collided at Glasto 1990 never seems to get as much airplay.
It was (arguably) way more interesting and politically charged. Plus we'll probably never see this level of social progress again in my lifetime. Who knows? Could happen.
Give me a DIY marquee full of crusties over a night at Shoom any day!
It's a documentary that should've been made years ago. A hugely important moment in film and Aaron Trinder completely did it justice! 😃
Yeah Glasto travellers area was free in ninety and what an atmosphere in there, people talk about 'edgy' these days, nothing like as edgy as that place was
Yeah i remeber that - I was like 16 - nearly every band that played in traveller area were wearing huge headsets and topless - and vendors selling everting from scrumpy to space cakes - nearly medieval, but futuristic too - yeah not sure I will every see anything like that again in my life time either.
@@frankie-zz3ot "nearly medieval, but futuristic too" - that's such a brilliant way to describe it. ;))
I hate to say it but the “crusty” free party scene was also middle-class, just as much as any other party scene. I’ll be shot down for saying it but I was there too. It’s not about class it’s about money. Club kids and Ibiza folk were into money, clothes, showing off etc. Free parties were about freedom, music and rebellion. Not class. There is no direct link between how you party and what class you’re from.
@@willpolr This is a good point - gathering in huge numbers is always going to be inherently middle class (this also includes me btw). However, a scene propelled by the values of the traveller community had a huge impact on me personally. In the advent of digital globalisation of culture (read as "Americanized") there isn't a youth movement that thrives on the rejection of bourgeois culture. I live in hope for generation alpha though!
Nice update! 🙂 So glad this film is starting to show at film festivals in Britain and Europe. Can't wait for us to be able to see it here in the states.
Where you at in the US?
All the crew! Can’t wait for this.

What a time to be alive.
1988 to 1994 - 18 to 24 years old.
I went to all of them and many many more. I remember the first time there was a dj at torpedo town. Was all bands / stages until that year. Probably 1990?
Torpedo Town that year is probably my best free party memories.
Good to see Bedlam there. I think Bedlam squat parties were possibly even more mental then Spiral Tribe! Maybe equally. Not a system you hear mentioned that often but they were legendary parties.
Free Party forever!!!
Saw this a couple of months ago and it was a fantastic watch. Brought back a whole load of wonderful memories. If only we had a time-machine, eh?
hi if i met you at detroit movement. enjoy the trailer! the documentary has been successfully playing at film festivals. just raising funds to pay for all the music licensing to release it publicly. 😀

I just said this to someone in comments. It’s never stopped! It’s still going stronger than ever in Europe. It will never stop now as it’s part of culture. People will keep it alive. I wish I was still there. Sadly my days of sound system ownership are over but I do still live in a van.
Good vibes to you for living the life and keeping it alive my friend.
I na it ain’t gonna be the same but it’s about time this all started up again
Jst leave ya phones indoors
😜
It’s still going on mate! Bit different here in uk these days but Eastern Europe is full on free party heaven every year still.

When will the full Documentary be released?
Looking at 2024
So what happened to these parties? Do they still exist? If so then where?
Yes, there's a thriving free party scene once again, with the youth backed up by original ravers and travellers who have the experience, wisdom and the kit to help them make it all a nice experience!
Is this out yet
no
Will this be availabe on dvd?
Hopefully, but many £££ hurdles to jump to clear the music rights for a physical release...
