I'm Dutch, and speak 4 other languages...But i can imagine how difficult it is to speak fluent Dutch. It's often illogical, and official Dutch and 'street dutch' is also very different...The Dutch keep speaking English when they hear you struggle...LOL. . I know a lot of 'expats 'but most don't bother learning Dutch. So good for you !
Dutch is also spoken on mainland South America, in Suriname. An additional half a million people you can communicate with :-)
Also by many of the older Indonesian people
When you said that Dutch is a stepping stone to other languages, immediately Yukichi Fukuzawa came into my mind.
In his autobiography he tells about discovering that Dutch wasn’t the world language he thought it was.* It was English. He was very depressed because it had taken years to learn Dutch. And now he had to start over again. Then he described discovering that learning English was much more easier to learn, once you knew Dutch.
*For centuries Japan only traded with the Dutch. Other nationalities were forbidden to come to Japan.
Fukuzawa was an interpreter, he had learned to speak Dutch. Then Japan was forced to open for other countries
Once you learn one of the hardest languages...the rest is peanuts.
In Japan Dutch has been the scientific language.
On a Japanes map of those days, the Netherlands is far too big too. It should also be a reminder how much our world view and our history is distorted by the dominance of English.
@@henrimessinghausen5185 I'm not really sure how hard Dutch really is. Many more language communities seem to (proudly) believe they speak one of the hardest languages, not just the Dutch.
I would think it would rather depend on your starting language. If you're Japanese, I could understand Dutch to be quite hard indeed. For English learners however, Dutch has been classified into the easiest category by the FSI (Foreign Service Institute- the American government institute responsible for training diplomats).
I’m Dutch and I picked up German and French pretty fast because of it. (This doesn’t apply to every Dutch person)

I'd like to add that learning Dutch also improves English skills, especially when trying to read old English, because both languages have the same roots. Also, applying grammar to your native language is hard because no-one really thinks about it. So people confuse 'to', 'too' and 'two' because they sound the same but these translate to different words. Being able to think in another language greatly improves grammar awareness.
Nice reasons! A friend of mine told me she liked learning Dutch because "it's cool to speak a language that not so many people understand." Ha, ha! In my own experience, I find that learning a language helps you understanding not only what they say, but also how they think (and, eventually, why they think like this). A new language lets you expand your mind!
You're bringing some very good arguments here! I love your thinking and enthusiasm.
Learning another language deepens your understanding of your own language, provided the other language has a rich enough grammar. My teacher of Latin used to say that they should give him the salary of the teacher of Dutch too, each time there was a misunderstanding that was actually based in an insufficient understanding of our own language.

Elderly and/or well educated Indonesians who study law or history, will often also understand Dutch.

Ik vind je video's over de Nederlandse taal erg leuk. Ik ben zelf een polyglot, dwz dat ik bij elkaar 9 verschillende talen spreek, waarvan 7 op hoog niveau. Taal is identiteit. Taal is een sleutel die culturele en sociale deuren opent. Als er iets is dat ik in je video's waardeer is het wel dat.

There was a study done I think by the UN where they listed the easiest and most difficult languages for native English speakers to learn. At the very top of the list were Malay and Indonesian (basically the same language which only diverged about half a century ago) because of their extreme simplicity and in the same tier were Dutch and Afrikaans because of their similarity to English; no other widely-spoken language is as English as Dutch and Afrikaans are.
So another reason to learn Dutch would be it's literally the one of the easiest other languages to learn because it's so closely related to what you already know.
(For the curious, I believe the most difficult language listed was Mandarin. It's because of the writing system; you have to learn each word three times: how it's written, what it means, and how it's pronounced. In English or Dutch, how it's pronounced is tied to how it's written is tied to what it means. In Mandarin those are basically unrelated, so it's three times as hard to learn a new word and that's probably why it takes over three ties as long to become fluent in the language).

On Sri Lanka they still use Dutch words (ertepel=potato; kakhus=toilet). In Indonesia even more. In English too (hangmat, ijsberg, see further ruclips.net/video/zni_KqYJ7Qg/видео.html).

If you're married to a Dutch speaker, if you are going to live in the Netherlands or do business with Netherlanders, if you are a scholar of languages, if Dutch literature (is there any?) appeals to you...if you just happen to like the taste of the language, maybe it is worth the effort to learn it. These seem to me to be the most compelling reasons.

Hi Casey, alot of different words/names and expressions concercing the Sea and ships you can find in different languages.
Tsar Peter the Great incorporated a lot of Dutch in the Russian language for ships and the sea.
And there will be more lanuages with Dutch words/expressions.

They barely speak Dutch in St. Maarten, Dutch is spoken on the ABC islands; Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao.

If you can speak Dutch, German is the easiest to learn. Scandinavian is a different story. Me as a Dutch, had several vacations in Norway and I didn’t understand a word. When you see it written, it’s a tiny bit easier but still very difficult. The same with Swedish.

In all seriousness, Vlaams (Belgisch Nederlands) is volgens mij nog veel charmanter/grappiger dan Nederlands Nederlands. Ik vind het hilarisch om mijn nicht uit Nederland mijn (Antwerps) accent bij te brengen. Gibraltar met een zachte g, uiteindelijk met ui en ei als éénklanken (en geen tweeklanken), verschillende woordjes als 'merci', 'turnavies', 'ergens geraken',... Misschien nog leuk om daar wat over op te zoeken.
Het Vlaams zingt meer dan het Nederlands. Het Nederlands heeft meer harde klanken zoals de G en R
Het Brabants en Limburgs is daarin al anders.
als nederlander kan ik je zeggen dat door bijna 8 jaar in regio antwerpen te hebben gewoond ik effectief de nederlandse taal begon te waarderen en er de schoonheid van kan inzien.

You should learn Dutch to be able to understand Brigitte Kaandorp, the funniest woman on earth. No other reason needed. Listening to her on RUclips played a big part in my Dutch learning.

Het Nederlands dat in België gesproken wordt, is duidelijk toch ietsje anders dan het Nederlands in Nederland. Hoe duiden jullie die Belgische standaardvariant aan (zoals je die bv. op vlaamse televisie hoort), als jullie die specifiek willen onderscheiden van ons 'Nederlands' Nederlands? (Als ik het goed heb begrepen verwijst de term 'vlaams' doorgaans toch vooral naar dialecten).
Je kan de standaardtaal hier Vlaams of Belgisch-Nederlands noemen. Dat laatste is waarschijnlijk iets correcter. Het Van Dale woordenboek gebruikt ook de term "Zuid-Nederlands" om aan te geven dat het woord vooral in België wordt gebruikt.
De betekenis van het woord Vlaams kan voor nogal wat verwarring zorgen. Dat komt omdat het naar meerdere dingen kan verwijzen.
- De standaardtaal in België
- De verschillende dialecten in Vlaanderen
- Enkel de dialecten in Oost- en West-Vlaanderen, Zeeuws-Vlaanderen en Frans-Vlaanderen
- de tussentaal in Vlaanderen. Dit is de dagelijkse spreektaal in geheel Vlaanderen en ligt tussen de standaardtaal en dialecten. Ook op tv wordt dit heel veel gesproken.

De reden om Nederlands te leren, is ook gelegen in het fatsoen dat buitenlandse expats moeten hebben om zich, net als de niet-westerse allochtonen, aan te passen aan de taal en de omgangsvormen in Nederland en Vlaanderen. De talenkennis van de Nederlanders en hun serviliteit ten opzichte van vooral het Engels zijn geen excuus voor expats om zich als Angelsaksische kolonialen te gedragen. Leer en spreek dus Nederlands!
Indrukwekkend, of impressionant, zoals onze Vlaamse vrienden zouden zeggen. Ik raad je een baan aan bij de overheid om het Nederlands te promoten.

I guess you forgot books. Although did you say media? Then I apoligise. And with books I don't mean just book-books, with letters, but... One aspect of Dutch language visual arts is our comic culture. Look up these titles: "Suske en Wiske", "Franka", "Tom Poes" & "Erik de Noorman". Especially the latter if you like Thor. S&W is more like Fantastic Four, Franka is a detecive and Tom Poes, well, is a mix of images and words that has anamorphic animals, much like Disney. Even though bits are translated in English, you can for example read literally hundreds of Suske & Wiskes in their native... Well, Antwerp Dutch. Which is Dutch. Partly why I want to improve my French by reading Astérix comics. One day.

Dutch people with a reasonable education speak 2 - 3 languages outside there own. France - german ar not so difficult to learn :))

Well...it is the third Germanic language in numbers 26 million people just about, not counting all the Afrikaans speakers.. And it is a good base for when you want to learn English/German/Scandinavian...it is more logical than English, and simpeler than German..

i disagree...unless you actually live in a country where dutch is spoken among the population such as suriname,netherlands,belgium etc i think it's pretty useless to know this language as an english speaker since most people who speak dutch also speak english. also 42 mil people is nothing! you are better off learning spanish or french or german then dutch atleast from a practical and Business standpoint.
