I really hate it when people bash our country for our infrastructure projects saying we are so far behind or have poor oversight and blah blah blah. To be fair, in some cases that can be true, but it’s not a matter of complacency by the U.S it’s simply the fact that as a culture we love to drive. Europe and Asian countries are so far ahead in some instances because they started building centuries ago. Most countries don’t have the luxury of being huge, wide, and open geographically. Not sure if most people have ever been to Europe but I have and I can tell you that the countries are beautiful but highly condensed. From the very beginning, most European and Asian countries had no choice but to go underground as they have no space for super wide freeways and highways. The U.S had the luxury of never having to go underground, until recently. And when it comes to Asian countries in particular, they are able to build so fast because they don’t have as many safety regulations or environmental ones. For example, China has destroyed many habitats for animals because there are no regulations stopping them from doing so. And they already had a rail infrastructure to expand rather than build from scratch. I wouldn’t say that the U.S is super behind, our geographic needs are different, and so are our laws, regulations, and much more. We built infrastructure that supported our needs at the time, but not now. It is what it is. Upgrading infrastructure will cost billions but we have no choice. Look at all the progress LA is making right now. They have been working non-stop to expand their subway and improve their freeways and its making a difference. Most major work should be done by the next summer Olympics. They are also improving bike lanes and bus lanes. The high speed rail is also making great progress in CA and the LA to Vegas section has already started construction.
I think you need reassess your historical lense of infrastructure in this country. The truth is that the US was built on rail. Ironically, being wide open is actually better for rail than cars. Think about it, how far can a car get on a single tank of gas? Maybe 6 hours/300 miles? That's a lot of infrastructure to build up to support car travel. Rail on the other hand, can travel far longer far faster, reducing the amount of infrastructure needed. Also, the fact that we love to drive is driven by the fact that our cities and towns were destroyed by the highway and auto lobby in order to make driving the most convenient form of travel. They intentionally destroyed dense, walkable areas in favor of wide car lanes and huge parking lots, making it very inconvenient to do anything but drive. You can look at how we set up planning districts in the 30s with the department of housing and urban development to see this car centric design was baked into government regulations and standards for how things got funding to be built. So it's no wonder that Americans "love to drive," because ultimately, we have no other choice.

I have followed the HS rail in California since it was proposed years ago. The vote by the citizens of California was misleading to say the least. They have made good progress building from Merced to Bakersfield and I expect in about 10 years it will be running if not sooner. The big question is will it make money, I'd say no. It will take lots of money to keep it running, which isn't unusual around the world. Like the northeast rail from Boston to Washington the speed varies, and only a small part is actually high speed. My guess for California is that Amtrak will become the operator or maybe another company supported by handouts from the government. The ridership between Merced and Bakersfield will not be that great to support the operation.
There is a side to this story that most Californians have not been told. Most everyone is talking about what's wrong with the HS rail project. But few are understanding that the idea that 74% of eligible voters approved in 2008 was not so much about a train, but much more about growing California in a way that builds on its inherent strengths and opportunities. The state's freeway system and investment in public education, from grade schools to the state universities, have served as a bedrock that made California the envy of the world. Our people are smart, and they're connected. The brightest and hardest-working people come here - and stay. They come from all over the world. The high-speed train will enable the state to grow in a more cost-effective and higher quality way. Connections by the Internet and high-speed trains capable of travelling at over 300 mph will allow us to connect in seconds and minutes rather than hours or days. High-density housing around HS trains stations will generate high ridership and enable the system to fund itself from operating revenues and benefit assessments on new housing construction. No state or federal government tax subsidies are required. The key is adequate scale of development and high-quality service. Albert Perdon: 310.871.1113

As of 2025 you won't be able to buy a Toyota Camry that isn't at least a hybrid. No more ICE. The rest of the world is moving to EVs.

That was good sparring. Good questions - good answers, minimal talking over each other.
He was trying so hard to ask questions for a “gotcha” moment smh. Working together must be so hard for some politicians. State your issue and allow the man to give you an answer. Rome wasn’t built in a day and these types of advances have taken decades to get as far as they are already smh.

That’s what they do to people who come before, bullies!
The Amtrak train already runs this route! I drove Amtrak buses out of Bakersfield to LA basin … if they are not putting rail in from Bakersfield to LA there will be absolutely NO CHANGE other than getting Amtrak off the freight rails! My opinion only … just common sense in my book … it’s time they account for the money being spent on that project and whom are the contracts being awarded to and is there any Good Ol Boy connections! In other words … Money Laundering!
They are spending a fortune building the flat, easy valley connections, the tunnel work to actually get into LA or SF destinations will be very interesting dollar wise. This work could easily be as much money as has already been spent.
lots of money is being spent on buying land for the tracks. there probably are mismanagement from the contractors. going through the mountains from bakersfield to al will be a challenge to be sure...i wouldn't want to take a bus from bakersfield to la, most attractive thing about it is high speed so it would make no sense to use bus
Money Laundering.
If you could pick a less qualified person to run the department of transportation it might take a hundred years to find him.
Perfect DEI pick, just like the rest of this inept administration

This the major fallacy these people are purposely ignoring is that like every single new project or law ever, it takes an investment. I know it must be hard for some people to think about our future because they think it doesn’t affect them, but you need to give it time for the project to be built efficiently and safely. Come back to Pete when you’ve got actual solutions instead of whining about investing in our infrastructure. Awesome job as always Pete!!!

They just mandated fuel mileage requirements which are impossible to meet! No mandates?
they have an electric vehicle that can go over 500 miles in a single charge. it is much more efficient than combustion engine
The auto industry has long said any new requirement is technically impossible to meet, be it safety, pollution, or mileage. Early in the air pollution requirements, GM said the new standard was physically impossible, but Volvo was already demonstrating it. So don't be surprised if they cry wolf again. They are just trying to hold down costs of purchasing the vehicle, even if it transfers the costs of air pollution on the population as a whole.

Spend billions and hope for results. You can’t beat that plan.
It's the liberal Democratic way.
Look at any railroad they're all government subsidized.....if they haven't made money by now and endless pit

High speed rail in CA should've been shut down the moment they discovered the inability to safely tunnel through the mountains north of Los AngelesAngeles in Sylmar (demonstrates the stupidity of this project). Sylmar is the epicenter of the 1971 earthquake. Who in their right mind drills a tunnel through seismically unstable mountains?
Switzerland, china, Japan all have miles of subway and high speed rail tunnels under mountains and seismically active regions.
Hell japan is the most active place on earth for earthquakes and they still build safe reliable transportation and tunnels.
I guess congress has forgotten that they're responsible for approving budgets, including for things like high speed rail in CA?

Aircraft consume massive amounts of fuel and add to deterioration of the environment. Oil and gas industry fear the electric rail system getting a foothold in the USA. That's probably one reason other countries far surpassed the USA in rail systems.

"As we’ll hear today, the United States subsidizes the fossil fuel industry with taxpayer dollars. It’s not just the US: according to the International Energy Agency, fossil fuel handouts hit a global high of $1 trillion in 2022 - the same year Big Oil pulled in a record $4 trillion of income.
In the United States, by some estimates taxpayers pay about $20 billion dollars every year to the fossil fuel industry. What do we get for that? Economists generally agree: not much. To quote conservative economist Gib Metcalf: these subsidies offer “little if any benefit in the form of oil patch jobs, lower prices at the pump, or increased energy security for the country.” The cash subsidy is both big and wrong." - Congressional budget committee.
