  • This is episode 13, the last episode, in my Dungeons and Dragons Curse of Strahd replay. In this story the group is heading to Castle Ravenloft, to save Ireena, stop Strahd's plan to turn her into a Vampire, and escape from Barovia, ending the cycle once and for all. Madam Ava gives the players a difficult decision to make.
    EDIT: Just to clarify. Garo didn't say Strahd's name on the way up to Ravenloft. In my notes I accidentally said it, but in character, we knew not to say his name.
    The Characters: (11th level)
    (The Players)
    Garo- Wood Elf Monk Cleric
    Gouda- Gnome Wild Magic Sorcerer
    Boshack- Lizardfolk Warlock
    Krusk- Half- Orc Paladin
    (Other NPCs)
    Ireena- Woman that Strahd is after. We're trying to protect her.
    Esmerelda- Vampire hunter. Trained by the famed Van Richten.
    Ismark- Ireena's Brother.
    Mordenkainen- Famous wizard who fought Strahd von Zarovitch a year ago and lost. Was in hiding.
    Van Ricten- Famed vampire hunter.
    Victor- Son the Baron Vallakovitch. Was making a teleportation circle in his attic, trying to escape from Barovia.
    Muriel- Our raven companion. Can turn into a human.
    Shadowfane- Unicorn Gouda accidentally summoned and has now joined up with the party.
    ENEMIES:
    Ludmilla, Anastrasya, Vollenta- Strahd's Brides
    Kiril- Werewolf supporter of Strahd. Ousted Emil to take over the pack
    Gertruda- Girl turned hag by the Night Hags. I tried to kill her but she escaped.
    Besta and Betta- A Minotaur and Dwarf. They were lives created through Maverous's power that are set out to kill Gouda.
    Bucephalus- Strahd's horse. A nightmare that can fly.
    Fiona- The leader of Vallaki. Cultist who works for Strahd.

There is a reason they have released this module in several forms over the years, made a board game out of it, and spawned an entire universe, the Ravenloft worlds, from the story of Strahd. Just as Dark Sun, Dragonlance, Forgotten Realms, Spelljammer, or Hollow World have their own flavor, Ravenloft campaigns are going to be full of horror elements, evil characters, and dark powerful beings that seemingly never can be outsmarted/outmaneuvered. The best you can expect from challenging the dark powers that rule Ravenloft are death, or to irritate/amuse them enough they create your own mist shrouded prison, such as Strahd, Lord Soth, Vlad Drakov, Lord Godfrey, etc.

    I'm posting this 15 minutes in: Gouda's only reason for wanting to not be the dark lord was she wouldn't see her family. I don't see why that is a problem. Yes she wouldn't be able to leave Barovia, but unless there is something stopping her family from going to Barovia, she and her family could still see each other.

    • @mikesands4681
      @mikesands4681 4 года назад +47

      My thoughts exactly, and then the dark lords would have to deal with a pack of annoying gnomes. Perhaps they’d flee and release barovia?

    • @minecraftbacon9620
      @minecraftbacon9620 3 года назад +10

      Except, that her family would DIE in Barovia in a Horrible way...not to mention... Gouda...she's no longer a Gnome anymore, If you remember she originally die as an gnome from a night Hag but came back as an Aberration of a Beholder, Then Die again and came back...Again as a Aberration(Beholder) + Tabaxi... and remember each time she dies she has to take a "new" form for her reincarnation in which in turn would make her MORE ABERRATION... Her family wouldn't want to see her in this way, they might consider her a Monster instead of her daughter.
      PLUS, Let say that Gouda's family survives the lands of Barovia and all the dangers... What are the chances that her family intends to kill her when they find out she look like this... i seriously doubt she would welcome her with open arms knowing what become of her.
      PLUS, PLUS EXTRA, Each time she dies and have to take a new form from 2 choices of race, and when she picks one, The other one that she didnt choose his also brought back to the living with the goal of killing her, And if they find her family in Barovia, there's no doubt in my mind that they would go and kill them.
      No matter what angle or point of view you see for Gouda, She will get the worst ending, After all ("She's the Hero..." "She's gonna be the Hero that dies in battles") and she will always be the Hero...That "Dies in the Battle"
      ______
      YEP, the way her Patron Beholder talk to her on that mansion made believe he was cursing her.
      And the only one to blame is Gouda... she just too "DUMB/GULLIBLE"

      @@minecraftbacon9620 "her family would DIE in Barovia"
      If it's a life expectancy thing, Gouda would be dark lord, she should be able to protect them. If it's about an afterlife, I don't know how to solve that.
      "Her family wouldn't want to see her in this way" I don't know where you got that from.
      About the Gouda dying and being recarnated with an enemy thing. I'm not sure if that is true if she accepts the mantle of dark lord.

    • @minecraftbacon9620
      @minecraftbacon9620 3 года назад +1

      yeah, thats true... but they don't know where she went.
      And even if they did, Her family would be trap there, also Barovia is really not good place to be, when the death rate is very high, Like really, Really High.
      all of the people of Barovia want to escape those dreaded lands yet they can't cause the dark forces surrounding those lands.
      Also lets be honest the people that live there are (TERRIBLE PEOPLE) u got Night hags that eat children, u got a Werewolf pack with a leader that wants to grow it packs numbers and rule them over, U got the Abbots that are corrupt (including "Ben's Character" Garou) and now the new vampire mistress thats is more powerful than Strahd.
      Unless Gouda rejects the gift entirely or Trask finds away to remove it, she will still be dying...
      and that's gonna be depressing for her family.

    • @pingdragonify
      @pingdragonify 3 года назад +5

      @@minecraftbacon9620 Gouda is a dark lord of borovia. You seriously think anybody in borovia has the balls to attack her family or that her family wont be protected at all times? Gouda also mentions how likable her family are, that gullible and optimistic personality in the face of horror and carnage says more about how "good" her upbringing was at home more than anything. I seriously doubt her family is that judgemental of her looks when they meet her; they are still gonna treat her like Gouda.
      Not to mention isn't the ambience and environment of borovia the refelction of the current "dark" lord of borovia? I am pretty sure Gouda would make borovia sickenningly pink with a dash happiness and rainbows. Either the monsters play nice or they are gonna suffer from Guoda's lectures of how to be a good boi 101. Not to mention Goro is there to knock some sense into her if she is making a dumb af decision and also be her eyes and ears to protect her from possible invasions.
      I am pretty sure it is easier to corrupt a person with a pure of heart than someone who is dumb as a brick. The Dark powers that be would have an even harder time to torment her than anyone else in the story.
      Guoda is the hero, a dark lord of borovia. She has inherited the power of all of borovia + she is a high level spellcaster + daddy's favourite gal which make her extremely difficult to kill. So far there is only 2 people are gunning for her... It is gonna be a situation where Guoda would see them as friends that comes and "play" with her every now and then.
      Gouda tick all the boxes of a perfect "dark" lord of borovia. She is too dense to be corrupted and too strong to be easily murdered by someone else.

    Brings a tear to my eye how all the characters ended up in their particular situations with big realizations about the world itself even though they technically accomplished very little in terms of Barovia itself. Usually plot twists that negate everything that the players did are a terrible idea, but with the theme of everything being hopeless while also furthering the characters themselves this is how you do a great plot twist. Hard choices had to be made, battles had to be fought and ideals were followed , but ultimately the powers of the land are unrelenting and inescapable.

    I really loved listening to your Strahd Adventure, and it's got me looking into all sorts of stuff and homebrew for the campaign. I'm going to be a switch-in DM for my table top group and this series introducing me to Barovia has put Curse of Strahd in my list of adventures to run down the line.

    Hands down, the run through of this campaign is my favorite content you've created my dude. Your animations are always excellent, but I didn't expect your long-form story telling to exceed your visual creativity. I would love to see another replay of this kind when you find the time/inspiration for it in the future! I have to go back through this one and pick out my favorite background images now, sooo.... time to binge all 13 vids again wooooo!!!

      - yeah, boshack needs something more reliable in his live, so he's neutral evil now

    Having failed to listen to other podcasts or summaries of campaigns previously, I was pleasantly surprised to find myself yearning for the next episode of this series.
    I think that your storytelling is amazing, it's simple in the way that everyone can understand it. It has a good narrative to it and is easy to listen to. The voices are perfectly done, and those few moments when the listener can hear you snickering/smiling when saying certain things just brings so much more into it as those are your personal feelings towards that moment. I truly hope that you will do more series like this as it has been amazing to listen to.

    Thanks for the great series! That ending... woof. Would love to hear more stuff like this. You have a very compelling voice and I hope it was as fun playing this campaign as it was listening to you. And thumbs up for your GM. They seemed to have found the right balance between a big adventure and the horror theme of Ravenloft and their inclusions were excellent. Good job!

    I loved this retelling with these characters and Ben's wonderful sense of humor. I do absolutely hate this module, though. If I wanted to engage in multiple hours of hopeless failure I would just go to work or try to balance my finances. I just don't get spending your free time taste testing all the flavors of suffering like some sort of gourmand of misery. Feel free to use "gourmand of misery" as a band name, by the way.

      The thing is it wasn't a complete failure. Victor, Stella, and Van Richten all left to be happy, and Boshack left with the flesh golem girl and Gertruda to do their own thing. Strahd's soul was also finally freed from the Dark Powers, which means Tatiana's reincarnations can finally get what peace you can muster in Barovia. Some good did come out of this, but the PCs minus Boshack got the raw end of the deal at the end of it because they accepted gifts from sketchy otherworldly beings.

    • @ZenKrio

      Ironically it was because Boshack was evil and selfish that he turned down his god's deal and was able to get a good ending.

    13 episodes later, I STILL kept forgetting that Krusk exists. The other characters are memorable and serve a distinct role in the party both story-wise and gameplay-wise, but Krusk? Either that player was just really silent at the table or his contributions were largely glossed over. It likely also had something to do with him playing his paladin just like how EVERYONE plays their paladin. Come on, people. Let them break the mold from time to time.

    • @Alresu
      @Alresu 4 года назад +5

      Yeah, I forget him also all the time. I remember the raven on their shoulder more... My guess is that it's an audience member player (referencing Matt Colvilles view on player types). They are there more to experience the story than to form it.

      He totally should have gone oathbreaker when the orc patron offered more power, but I think there wasn't really a lot of motivators for him to denounce his oath and shift alignment besides "more power" so RP wise it wouldn't have made sense.
