      @@tristanchik4432 it does not however diminish his accomplishment. as many DMs I have known never touch Ravenloft series at all because of the oppressiveness of the module and harshness of the setting.

      Reddit helped this time for someone who was devoted enough to run the campaign to the end and that alone is worth a Nod to the DM for.

    With the Lord Soth scenario (I think that's their name), part of the thing with The Demiplanes of Dread is that they're self-inflicted hells, if you will. One of the requirements for being a dark lord is that you have to have done something terrible, but be incapable of admitting you did anything wrong. So with Soth, my understanding is he escaped because he admitted that he actually did deserve to be punished this way, and his goals were stupid. So, they let him go.

      Could you drive the immortal vampire trapped in his own hell, after he killed his own brother and drank his blood, "insane"? I don't think that word has as much meaning in Barovia as it does in our world.

    • @paulcoy9060
      @paulcoy9060 4 года назад +75

      Also, I read it as Strahd can choose whether he scrys on someone saying his name, not he must scry, because it is a spell, not a free ability. In game, I think any sentence a person says with the word "Strahd" in it, can be heard by Strahd as a soft whisper in his head. If the voice says, "We need to pay our taxes to Strahd," he wouldn't bother with listening to anything else. If the voice says, "This sword will finally kill the devil Strahd!!!", then he probably will want to investigate.

    FYI, the Dark Gifts made it seem like the Players couldn't die. In another game, that might be an interesting mechanic. But here, it felt even more oppressive. "Nope, death will not be a release. Instead, you will suffer even more humiliations (with a thin veneer of additional power)." When Garo died and Ben was making a new character, only to have Garo get brought back... it just seemed sad and depressing.

    • @SerDerpish
      @SerDerpish 4 года назад +24

      Joseph Mantler while I was going through the series it just sounded like the GM was being spineless and couldn’t go through with actually killing off a PC, not knowing that 1) the Dark Powers were written into the module, and 2) it was done specifically to offset the brutal difficulty of the module, especially at lower levels. It ended up being an interesting twist so it was a net positive, but it annoyed the hell out of me at the time. Glad they gave the proper context for it now. Also your point is an interesting one which I had not even considered, adding another layer to the genius of how the campaign was run

      @loke6664 2 года назад +5

      @@tsifirakiehl4250 I would place her one or 2 levels below the PCs so she still is useful but wont overshadow the players. There is a balance between being a helpless damsel in distress and just being one of the guys/gals. In my case at least, I want the players to be the heroes in the group and there are already pretty powerful allies that will join up with the players.
      But that is me and I might change that depending on my group. As a DM it is my job to make sure everyone who plays is having fun. Some groups just want to adventure with equal allies while others want to be the true heroes that stands out in their fellowship. So I might buff or nerf allies depending on who I play with. Having the allies slightly less powerful kinda works for most players but it might not be the best option.
      I do hate the troupe when Elminster comes and saves the players if they screw up which wasn't uncommon in old Forgotten realms modules. I honestly rather have my players fail then, I personally don't like when the players can't loose, it makes the achievements of the players worthless if they can't fail. I am less hard on new players since they might need a win to really get into the game but I want experienced players to know that their actions matter.
      I might fudge a roll now and then if the players loose to bad luck but never to bad decisions. If the players have a really smart plan it is a shame if the DMs dice punish them. Of course, botching when doing something incredible dangerous could still kill someone but that is hardly my fault and I can't fudge the players rolls.

They have been inside the castle twice now, been to Vallaki, in fact they have hit up every location now including the amber temple, but won’t go near the village. Many of my players have been through death house before, a lot of people start COS and you know groups break up. So I started them being pulled into the mist from all over the FR, forcing them into a group. After a few monster encounters along the road they came to madam Eva on the western side of the map. So they pretty much start solving the wine issue for Krezk. By hitting the winery early they get allies from the Markova family who share secrets with them (adventure hooks) when they are a little stumped on what to do next. One of the memorable things I took away from CoS (as a player) was, when Strahd turned up at the end of a random fight to be Strahd in our face we quickly hid Irina: Our mage told us that will hid her and himself with invisibilty by a rock formation. We have a little tassle with Strahd and he plants a fireball in our midst as a parting gift and most of us are close to dying. But the rock formation is also in the blast range of the fireball and as our mage loses consciousness the invisibility drops revealing his and Irinas burnt bodies. Strahd realises in this moment, that he just killed Irina. His regret was tangible in the room and he takes what is left of her body away. The tragedy of the situation made him "human".

I had the players shuffle the Tarokka deck, but had withheld the cards I planned for the reading behind the DM screen. Ben, just watched through the replay, great series. IF I were to DM this and Strahd would've been able to go through the wedding, I would have probably had Strahd lift the veil at the alter before the vows and the "Dark Powers" would have substituted Irena with Sergi who would've said something like "Brother, she is still mine." and then turn into mist. Because why he is Lord of Barovia; the Dark Powers are still over Strahd. This works because Strahd made the deal and is damned forever in his Barovia prison and it shows that the Dark Powers are actually in charge.

    • @comradethalia5491

  • @Cecinestpasunebot
    @Cecinestpasunebot 4 года назад +6

    My instinct as a DM, with regards to the pool, would be to have Sergei take away Tatyana, leaving Irena as her own character who is no longer the reincarnation. Maybe Tatyana reincarnates as someone else, maybe the cycle breaks in some way. Philosophically complicated, sure, so maybe you include changes to her physical appearance and/or personality to make it clear that this is now Irena, her own character with her own memories.

    • @4203105
      @4203105 4 года назад +3

      That is imo the best way to play it if you don't cut it completely. You see Irina get possessed by Tatiana for a moment, walk into the pool and then you see Tatiana and Sergei leaving as an image in the water, leaving Irena behind, now standing waste deep in a pool of normal water.
      The implications for the story and the never ending cycle, that is now broken would be really interesting.
      Would Strahd care that it is now Irena and not Tatiana? Would he even notice? Would the wedding go through now that the curse no longer applies and what would that mean? All interesting story hooks.

    Our companion rules: every ally in the fight picks one enemy, who's HP is reduced from 10% to 30%, depending on the companion. If the enemy they targeted dies, they have a chance to either be wounded/killed or pick a new target. Story-wise they are in the thick of the fight, but mechanically they are out of the way.

      When me or my players don't want to control the NPC I usually just not have them be in the fight. You can have the classic moment of "Run! I will hold them back!", you can have them captured, you can just have them not follow the party around and simply fight on a different front etc.
      Your idea sounds interesting for some kind of red shirt-type situation like fighting a dragon with bunch of soldiers helping the party (I might implement that), but it sounds kinda half-baked for real NPCs. For example, the young gnome mage ally casting spells from the back can be a target of a Power Word Kill forcing the party to run back to save her - giving the enemy a health debuff makes them really just a modifier to the difficulty of the encounter which would in reality depend on the luck of the boss etc.
      But what helps a lot if you cannot leave the characters behind and don't want to run them fully is to get rid of the slowest part of their turn - dice rolls. You can do that easily with mob rules!
      Prepare how often will the person hit, their main saves etc. before the battle, and in the battle just use the average. 20 hired rogues against an ancient red dragon? +4 to attack vs. 22 AC, needs 18 to hit - looking at the tables about 3-4 of them will hit and do total of 17 damage on each turn. If they need to make a save you can do the same. For example, if all of them have evasion and neeed 15 to pass the dex save then only 4 will survive the breath weapon and now deal only 5 damage every other round. Next time only 1 will survive etc.
      You can do the same even for more complex NPCs and just to change the numbers - paladins will do more damage, wizards will chain cast lightning bolts to do x damage first x rounds, then do fire bolts for x damage in the remaining x rounds. If you have just a couple you can still use this just have him hit every x th turn etc. You will be surprised how quickly you can run even a huge number of NPCs if you don't need to roll.

      it depends on whether hags are magically evil; depending on setting some creatures are evil or good as a matter of their very being instead of the choices they make in life and in some other settings they aren't and their described alignment is just a drift tendency. For example, chromatic dragons are magically evil in most settings, but in Mystara and Pathfinder they aren't restricted to it and can be redeemed. If I ran CoS I´d probably keep the pool. But instead of Tatiana replacing Irena and dissapearing I would have Irena go "Who the heck are you? No I´m not going with you you creep. You´re just like Stradh, obsessed with me."

    I am new to DM'ing and have'nt done it yet, but Curse of Strahd is already on my list for plans in the future, that was a really nice campaign and I think i picked up a few nice things i might be able to use. Thank you guys, always good to have a different perspective on stuff. :)

    I love the story you told of your run in the game and then having the DM interview
