We are Carissa, Iwan & Frankie the sausage dog, and in 2020 decided one night over a bottle of wine that moving from North Wales to Portugal would be a good idea. Within a month we were on the road to Portugal to find the perfect piece of land to call home. We picked up Albi, Joao and Simao the cats along the way, as well as Diogo the podengo and a flock of chickens.
Subscribe to follow our project as we turn an old stone barn into our home, and learn the ropes of looking after a piece of land to make an abundant garden and one day, our very own winery.

I think you might need a hammer drill for drilling into brick/stone/render etc

    • @secret_one

Yes agreed also mains powered as they have a bit more oomph over a sustained period of time

7:26 a mains powered hammer drill will always be better than a cordless drill, even a cheap €20-€30 mains drill. However using the masonry bits on brick/stone is what they’re designed for & will make the job easier for you guys

Have you heard of "chicken tractors?" They're on wheels so you can move them easily when needed. One build and no posts to keep taking up and down. They get fresh grass and bugs all the time. They also have wire on the top, so you don't have to worry about predators. Also duck manure can be used right away as it's not as hot as the chicken manure, which needs to compost first. Duck eggs are said to be very good also. Your farm is looking lovely. I enjoy your blog so much. Thank you for sharing your journey!

TIP FOR GREENHOUSE. Find a product that comes with a flip top or a hinged lid. I use a dairy creamer that has a hinge to pour out your cream and then it snaps close. Glue this entire lid onto the inside of your tarp. When dry, open the cap and use a blade to cut a hole only the size of the cap. Next time you have trapped flyers, open the cap revealing the hole you cut so they can feel the breeze and sun and hopefully find their way out.

I had the same issue with drilling into granite in my old Cornish cottage. Went through about 6 drill bits and then realised that the ceiling and beam was slightly lower one end (low uneven cottage ceiling with beams) after many attempts I still did not get the depth needed. In the end I bought shorter screws and hung the cabinet on a wing and prayer. 18 years later the cabinet is still in place. Well done for getting it up.

It would be soo much better for you and the animals. You could eventually meet up to your bed shed/room. That would be soo much more room for you and fur babies. Just my thoughts. Hugs.

Just an idea to allow bugs out of the greenhouse, perhaps get some sticky velcro, cut a half square segment or v shape that can easily be opened or closed. Alternatively i believe they make velcro zips which may also be a better solution, can also make vents similar to tents to let hot air or humidity out in summer. 🙏🏼goodluck we have loved your videos

The mushrooms in your bed are 1. A good sign that you have healthy, fertile soil, and 2. That there’s too much water. If the latter is due to rain, don’t worry about it. If it’s due to your watering, pull back on frequency and/or amount. And good on you for not eating them!
Also so happy to see the comfrey! Hopefully you’ll be using it to make some home brewed comfrey feed for the garden - it will help so much with your garden’s growth! Consider a trip to the sea to gather seaweed to do the same. Yarrow and borage are also great for making homegrown fertilizers. Free fertilizer is the best! I’m a lazy gardener, so I just put all of these in the same bucket for a super rich, complex feed.
You can also make biochar by putting some char in a bucket with water and chicken manure. So many exciting options that are all possible on your homestead!
You’ll have such great results if you use any or all of these!
If you haven’t watched, The Weedy Garden RUclips channel has great videos on all of this and more. Plus they’re really well made and entertaining.

Sweetcorn will do better started in small pots. The cell trays are a little to small for them. Keep them well watered and warm. Lots of well rotted manure in the soil will give them a good start once in the growing position. Loved this vlog. So atmospheric with the trees in blossom and mist..

I'm not sure how much masonry drilling you need to do in the future but those little drills don't have much hammer action. A rotary hammer drill will go through it like butter and you can get battery versions. You will need new bits for it called sds bits that clip in rather than the screw chuck on your smaller drill.

Nasturtiums are doing better when directly seeding in the ground like cucumbers and in your case put them somewhere where they can grow mostly on the shade side of a tree all your little building or a wall around you, so the roots stay cooler should work. In regards to your composting methods use your chickens put as much as you can into their run grass clippings, straw, woodships, anything from your kitchen of 6our land and 8f needed from outside too ! Give your vegetable more shade as they only need 6 hrs sunshine everything more in your climate will make it difficult, winter crops try too start them earlier and in shade use local seeds mix them with British seeds if you have so if they grow they get use to climate if you collect your own seeds!

What you need is an SDS drill, this type of drill has a better percussion/hitting than a standard combi drill. The drill bits have different shaft that only fit in SDS. Not sure if SDS is available in Portugal but it would be a new drill either battery or main powered.

Lovely garden and chicken video. Also, glad that Diago and Frankie's Grandma has returned to visit them.

the most amazing thing about this channel is that after a couple years of regular watching, it keeps getting better.
It doesn't sound like you're using an impact drill. They may be making the twist drill obsolete. (not to be confused with a hammer drill which is really intended solely for drilling serious masonry? impact drills - also referred to as 'impact drivers' - are particularly useful for driving screws. Many probably keep a few manual screw drivers for nostalgia's sake)

    Questions!
Where is the new chicken run (I lost my bearings especially when I saw the breeze block building)
When do you plan to renovate the barn?
Request! Please get some Pygmy goats to help with grazing and manure for compost ! ❤

      - If you can pause when the map comes up you should be able to get a better idea. The block building is the chicken coop we built last year. It’s about 30m from the house.
      - we’re a bit stuck with waiting for planning permits and architect drawings at the moment, so we don’t really have a timeline for it
      - I don’t think we’ll ever get goats to be honest, everyone we know who owns them wishes they hadn’t got them so we’re taking their advice. We might get a couple of sheep in the future but not for a while yet.

@@FrankieOffGrid thanks for that. So the new run is on the other side of the coop I think.
Pigs? Just thinking of the manure! X

You may concern getting some goats to help with grass control. They will help clean-up branches of leaves, allowing the branches to be used for other projects. You can stake the goats around the property to help keep the land clean. The milk from the goats can provide wonderful food .

If you're going to be doing a lot of drilling into stone/concrete it would be worth getting an SDS drill and bits, much more powerful than your combi drill. If you get a Makita one you can use your batteries in it.

Hi Iwan & Carissa, I thoroughly enjoyed your video, hearing the birds and seeing your bountiful land, the blue skies and the sun.
I think your wildflower meadow would make wonderful hay.
The weather in England has been awful - cold, wet and grey - I am fed up with it.
Carissa has inspired me to get back into the garden so I had 3 50L bags of compost delivered yesterday and I have two raised beds for growing vegetables and my mini greenhouse where I could grow some bush tomatoes. My garden has been taken over by bold foxes who have been fed by neighbours and instead of running away the fun towards me and being partially sighted its scary. I sometimes play them lion noises on my phone at night for them to make them think that predators live in my garden lol.

I've had mushrooms popping up in my garden, and sometimes in pots, I was the same bit worried. When I looked it up, it said mushrooms growing is a good thing it means your soil is good. Also, the gardeners world said the same , I've been improving the soil, especially for pots, and I've got mushrooms everywhere. So I'm not worried

Mushrooms suggest the presence of fungi in your soil which is considered beneficial.

Yep! Mushrooms are fungi. Just leave them. They are still helping with breakdown of organic matter & converting it to useable nutrients for your veggies.
Wrt the comfrey: I really battled keeping mine going this summer - didn't plant it out, as it didn't come with "bocking 14" assurences. I utilised all the instructions I could find online, but still it did its best to die on me. Here's what I learned .(It came planted in chunky soil, that does not retain water well). It likes its roots clammy - really can't handle getting water challenged in even the slightest degree. As it naturally grows on riverbanks & have 'deep-diving' taproots, I figured: let's give it a bowl of rainwater to stand in - & it really worked. Not deep : + - 1cm. Just water the bowl - as it loathes water on its leaves. We live in a summer-rainfall region, but El Ninjo had us seeing virtually no rain for 3months. Our summers are scorching - & the comfrey could not handle full sun in our blasting heat. Try early morning sun only, that changes to dappled sun by late morning - & full shade by early afternoon. Happy growings!

Hi Carissa. When im growing sweet corn, I found they grow better if directly planted. But my area is not as hot as yours are. But if well watered they should be ok. Love the show. Regards
