It may be a dark song, but it's a great look into Chester's head. The feeling of wanting to give up may not be a positive message, but you gotta acknowledge that's the way it had to be to rightly express the emotions. I don't think you took this seriously enough.
They wanted you to react because this man screamed for 17 seconds straight. Most people cant even breathe out for 17 seconds, much less trying to scream for that long. Can you imagine the amount of control you need to do that? Crazy amounts, crazy amounts
Literally in tears right now... haven’t heard this song in time for real so appropriate and hard hitting... and that’s before I even think about the fact Chester did really mean what he was saying in this song... such a great song brings me back to my teenage years... if anybody is going through tough stuff right now then I urge you to speak to somebody soon!! It helps I PROMISE!! Just speaking the words that are hardest to say makes it weigh less heavy on your mind and soul... we are never truly on our own so long as we are willing to ask for help... keep up the good work man... 👍
Dude these tracks are deeper than you think. Chesters following was unmatched. His voice was unmatched in rock. When he ended his life after a career seemingly singing about his inner demons...it left a big hole. LP music is stunning and poinient and meaningful to so many. Forever a fan. RIP Brother.
We wanted this because he was saying what we needed to hear. When you get to that dark place and you consider giving up music steps in and helps you make sense of your own emotions especially when you are Yung with no clue. Yes musically it's amazing but those dark lyrics saying what 15 year old me was feeling helped me not to do what he is singing about. That song saved lives. That album saved lives. That band saved lives. I didn't realize that band saved my life until years later.
I think music that tackles suicide can help those who are feeling depressed and have a mental health problem feel like they are not alone. In a world where talking openly about how you feel especially as a guy it's easy to feel isolated. I think it's not a coincidence that one of Eminem's most popular songs is when I'm gone.
Chester unfortunately did give up in the end, which makes this song quite more powerful. It's like a guy screaming for help, and his screams and vocals sound like pure raw emotion instead of screaming just for the sake of screaming.
I'd say that between this song, Papercut, and Breaking the Habit you really get a great handle on the three main facets of Linkin Park's vocals during the Hybrid Theory/Meteora era with Mike's rapping in Papercut, Chester's screaming here, and the phenomenal sound of Chester's clean voice in Breaking the Habit.

i got to see LP live back in 2007 or 08, they did this song. When Chester did the scream, the entire concert venue went silent, once he stopped, well you can imagine the mosh pits that erupted.
Yeah man, Chester struggled with depression for a long ass time, He also struggled with drug addiction. Yet Chester had one of the biggest hearts out there. Seems like even in 2020 people don't fully understand how emotion can be best expressed through music. I don't know for certain and I'm sure someone can correct me on this, as much as I love Linkin Park and grew up with them I never really got into the nitty gritty of his suicide or 'suicide' depending on who you ask. I feel music was a way Chester was not only making people more aware that these feelings are serious and shouldn't be ignored or frowned upon, but also a way he could just express his own feelings and dare I say maybe asking for help (maybe not).. Not only that but also giving youth and adults alike that may also be suicidal a way to connect and understand that there are many others in the world struggling as well. That they are not alone. Most of Linkin Parks songs cover pretty heavy subjects and it may not always be the most evident but there is a lot of emotion and heart put into every song. It's why they have such a strong community, it's real music.

As someone who cried when he died because of how much their music resonated with me and it's such a huge loss, I have to agree with everything you said. Their music got me through so much shit from the earlier years and even through now they've always had that ability to pull on those strings and make me think it's gonna be better. The hardest part, besides him being gone to some of those same struggles, is that there isn't anything new to come. There was always that looking forward mentality and it ended so abruptly.
