I picked up my guitar recently after 10 years of going nowhere near it and enjoyed playing it again- in a very rusty way! I used to like messing around with DADGAD back in the day and I used to find it easy to come up with some fairly decent sounding stuff. When I tried that tuning again a few days ago, I didn't know what I was doing! It sounded like a tortoise was walking over the strings.

The older style are too rigid and plasticky to pull off those intricate chords whereas the fingers tend to fall off the rubber gripping hands from later models, Probably best to just get some new strings, as you say.
