My first sweatbox experience was going to Walton [liverpool ], I was withdrawing off methadone and being irritated by CS gas fumes that were coming off my clothes, the funeral of princess Diana was playing on the radio , it was my first time in an adult prison , what concerned me the most was not how other prisoners were going to treat me , it was that I knew I was going to suffer a severe withdrawal [no methadone inside back then ] .

I call such a vehicle a Black Maria, as that was what my late father called them. When I hear some people calling them taxis, it really makes me cringe. A taxi is a vehicle that I might book myself onto if the bus drivers are on strike and I have a long journey to make that is too far to go on foot.

I watch all these videos on jail and what to avoid yet jail to me is home and it's the outside I don't understand, rules don't borrow don't rat don't steel and if your in a gang always say so and never ever rob someone and last always always admit what your in for, prison is a social media platform everyone will know anyway and if you have any worries ask to go to a protection wing. Most of the time if you borrow a radio or phone it will be broke they know it's broke but will blame you man and bill you a fortune, try and find a friend but not a close friend just someone to mix with but don't trust him but nothing worse than being a loner in jail it's okay if you can handle yourself but I've seen guys on there own and become victims to the others guys and never trust screws they will help the people that bully you and even turn the cameras so it's not seen I've seen this many times, best advice don't go jail but you can do your time in peace if you don't get caught up in all the drama.

Being a stocky 6'4 I would imagine you being one of the friendly alpha male types, the top 5 percent who only fight if someone forces it on you. At 5'11 and 11 stone with a baby face I often had people being dicks here and there, although luckily never got into a fight or taxed (thank god) but had to be diplomatic and bite my tongue a lot of the time, and had no backup from other lads as no one was from my area. I used to work with ex-offenders, you know salt of the earth, have your back, see nowt, say nowt etc.. The first thing you must do is NEVER let a screw scare you, you have to let them know they can't diss you, your not scared of them. They then leave you alone, They pretend to be amenable but would stab you in the back for points, some are bone idol, some should be locked up in there, some are cowards and some are hard bastards. It's a balancing act, they can be awkward c**ts, they can make things disappear, become forgetful (to unlock or if your a c**t due for a slap, forget to lock your door, so those on the wing who have a beef with you can slap you). Stand your ground, but NEVER hit one, you think you've got away with it, but in little ways they can make life difficult, very very difficult (last to be unlocked for meals so when you get there, you have to have whats is left, last for social time, last for exercise so you don't get the full time, applications go missing etc... And that's before you meet the con's.. Don't grass, don't be a bitch, don't wimp (from day one say no and mean it, don't be weak, if they know they'll have resistance, they back off) DON'T BORROW and don't lend (unless you have muscle to back it up) don't walk a round a hard man (in your demeanor) respect your pad mate, follow the con code and you'll be ok, ..... Remember to you it's how you got to survive to them (screws) it's just a job..... They can male your life sh*t then go home

I remember my first time I was was 16-17 on my way to woodhill. You just think what's it going to be like and when I got there and finally got on the wing my pals was there and we was getting it on and no using the toilet for a 2,s when you're doubled up or it's a straight fight people and if you are young offenders your fighting every day anyway believe if you can't fight then you will learn the hard way. And i hear it's worse nowadays guys 💪 🗡️🔪 don't go to prison.

I have watched a lot of documentaries about prisons , prisoners , true crimes . I guess as a species , we have a fascination with the darker aspects of life .
I've seen hardened criminals talking about time inside ,& the gang mentality ,& I've spend time watching the silly boys who are desperate to belong to a gang , to enhance their fragile egos . Children who have been sentences for shooting some poor defenceless shop owner , then talk about why they themselves live by a code of respect in prison .The irony of their twisted logic escaping them.
Some people are born bad , some want an easy life through acts of crime , some end up in the system through the cruelty of others . Whether it be mental or physical abuse , possible sexual abuse .
Whatever the circumstances that may draw a person to consider crime , I hope your no nonsense view of the first day in prison , will perhaps remind people of the reality of life inside . And if only one person out of the hundreds who could follow this path , could change their lives in order to find another way to live , then your job is done .

20 years ago was in the back of one of those vans picked up from Dartford Kent, we stopped at Newcastle at some point where they gave me porridge then back on the road they took me all the way to fucking Airdrie Glasgow. By the way I was the only one in the van for this entire journey, taken to Airdrie sheriff sat there downstairs for 8 hours no one telling me shit then told me they were taking me to barlinnie that was a long fucking two days. The TV was shit but honestly the routine kept me sane having a schedule like weakest link at 5 Simpsons at 6, Saturday morning TV lineup it wasn't as reality based back then it was some familiarity in an environment that offered nothing else but honestly haven't watched telly since then haha
