    I have a contreversial view, I saw you said Baam (from tower of God in the picture) was just a simp/yes man, but think about it this way, Baam wakes up like a baby and the first person he sees is Rachel, his motherly figure. It's like saying a baby has no reason to follow and listen to everything his mom says. Baam wakes up with the mind of a baby, he knows nothing, until Rachel starts teaching him. If a mother abandoned her child, wouldn't the child go after her? Baam IS that child, he knows nothing else than Rachel and what she taught him. Wouldn't it make sense that she is his reason to live? A baby can't think for himself yet, so his only reason to live is his mother. Baam risks his life for all he has ever known. In the webtoon, he later starts realising that he is not alone anymore, and that what Rachel did was wrong. He stops chasing after her and found another reason to live, his friends. I think Baam is a really good character that also impacts the series as a whole, like without him, the whole series wouldn't exist, everything, the hirarchy, would stay the same. Geeze, I just realised how long this is, but if you read this, would you mind pinning this, cause I want others to know that things aren't always what they seem with characters and how they progress over the story.

    I think that it's important to differentiate between character development and character progression. Character development is the process of building a believable and engaging character whereas character progression refers to a character's change over time. While progression can help in building a good character it's completely different from the development. Also character development is always necessary, progression isn't

    So, uh, about One Punch Man... I'd say it is literally THE perfect example on how to write a good story with an overpowered protagonist. My favorite moments from OPM aren't those in which Saitama is punching monsters, they are those in which Saitama is teaching Genos a moral lesson. Or in which he's inspiring people, like King. Or even being inspired by some of them, like Mumen Rider.
    OP protagonists can work greatly if you have a solid and well established cast of secondary characters. If you read/watch ONE's (the author of OPM) other famous work, Mob Psycho 100, you'll see it follows pretty much the same formula: an amazingly overpowered protagonist with a monotonous personality and boring design, but who is able to influence the lives of people around him, who are all three-dimensional characters with vastly different backgrounds, in such peculiar ways that it makes for an incredibly interesting story.
    So personally, I watch/read Mob Psycho and OPM not because I wanna see Saitama the hero, or Mob the esper. I do it because I want to see Saitama the person and his hero friends, and Mob the person and his esper friends. And if Saitama or Mob fight in some chapters/episodes, well, at this point I know I can trust that the author will find a way to make it interesting.

    • @MonitorComics
      @MonitorComics  2 года назад +3

      You make some GREAT points! Thank you for taking the time to write all of that and adding onto the discussion! I completely agree!
      Mob Psycho 100 is actually one of my all time favorite anime series! So I get exactly what you mean!
      I should have mentioned in the video that there are always going to be exceptions to every "tip, rule, etc" MOB and OPM and Saiki K are perfect examples
      When I mention overpowered characters, I was mostly thinking about isekai protagonists that are SUPER COMMON these days. Most, if not all of them are overpowered for no good reason. And the stories/characters are super generic, so the whole work falls apart
      In retrospect, stories like OPM and Mob are perfect examples of how to write Overpowered characters correctly. Thanks again!

    • @danielbueno8474
      @danielbueno8474 2 года назад

      @@MonitorComics Oh, sorry, I didn't see your reply before. (Dammit, RUclips...) I'm glad you get it! But yeah, unfortunately, you are right about OP isekai protagonists being so common nowadays :\ Well written OP protags are the very rare exception to that rule. So much so that I wouldn't dare try my hand at writing one. Making a flawed protag that progressively gets stronger is, imho, much easier than making the protag already strong from the beginning, since what will drive the plot will need to be exclusively protag's personality and the secondary characters.
      So I guess unless the writer is really, REALLY good at writing multiple characters, balance out their "screentime" and make them interact with the protagonist in a way that has a justified impact in their life, it would be better to avoid trying to write an OP protagonist. A lot of times while I was reading ONE's stories I caught myself thinking "how does this man come up with this stuff?!" In MOB it sometimes felt like Reigen or Teru were the protagonists, and I definitely agree with people who said the protag in OPM season 2 was Garou. And he was the goddamn villain! And both stories still were great in those parts, in fact, moments that put Reigen and Teru, and Garou in the spotlight were some of the best in both series!
      So hey, glad to hear you're a fan of MOB, too! I actually enjoy it even more than OPM. And btw, thank you for making these videos. I plan to write this story I've been developing in my head since I was like 10 or something, but due to time restraints my current job and other life stuff, right now I can only be at the "mental drawing board", experimenting with ideas and trying to decide how exactly I want the story to be (will probably write some practice stories before I start to work on my dream story), and your videos are a huge help in trying to decide about a lot of things. The setting, the pacing, the designs... I'm writing all these ideas down, and will experiment with writing a script one of these days and see how it turns out.
      Seriously, your channel is a gold mine. I'm so glad I found it.
      So stay safe, man, and keep up the great work! :)

    A topic that would be nice would be how to write female leads. I read mostly shonen manga and I have noticed that female leads are generally quite weak as characters. They often contribute to the plot a lot less than other major characters and are often reduced to love interests with little else of significance. It is quite frustrating because the rest of the cast is usually much more interesting and developed and it makes writing your own female leads all the more difficult due to good examples being more difficult to find.
    If you could consider tackling this topic at some point and possibly hinting towards some series that have good female leads it would be very appreciated. Love your work and it was nice to have you back.

    • @MonitorComics

      Thank you so much for the thoughtful suggestion! I do like this idea a lot actually! Typically shojo manga is what pops into my head when I think of well-written female characters, but even then they're usually made to fit the traditional "girly girl" personality. Shonen female leads are a lot harder to come by, the only one I can think of off of the top of my head is Emma from The Promised Neverland, but even then she's portrayed as a tomboy. I'll definitely gather my thoughts and make a video about this soon lol, thank you again for the support!

A Tl;Dr version would be, simplify your story into a single pilot episode. A one-shot needs to complete in a short amount of time so it's not worth stuffing too many complicated ideas into it. If you think about a long-lasting series like naruto, a one-shot version might be Team 7 on a mission and the one-shot ends when they finish the mission. Hope that helps!

    4:40 “Villains who are evil only for the sake of it”
    I’ve seen this prime motivation in many villains in Fairly OddParents, it falls flat real quickly, in spite of it being one of my favorite cartoons (Crocker and Remy Buxaplenty are two exceptions due to them both having a tragic backstory, but When they start to say “thank you” for being called evil or monstrous by the heroes, then I start to lose interest in them; Maybe that’s them feeling the joy and pride in their work, but to me it feels more like they’re now being motivated by pure evil than the backstories they were given; Vicky does not have a backstory, despite being the main antagonist)
    I know this is probably intended to make the villains more comedic, but at the same time, I think it makes them lose their sense of humanity and 3-dimensionality and it’s hard to relate to them

    And his friends congratulate him for saving the world by killing 80% of the people.
    I will also give any
    Resembles of character growth as a red herring.
    The protagonist stays the same character throughout a series.
    I will appeal to the shippers
    To get away from character development .
    Also the protagonists sister takes his head off and carries it with her to show true love. This is done to appease the high intellectual shipping fans.
    Then it is revealed the protagonist had no free choice and he was moved by the heroine of 50 shades. Only by seeing him beheaded the heroine from 50 shades can be free.

    Please
    Don't put spoilers from other animes in your videos
    Because I just have to put my earphones out getting out of so much spoilers you give to your audience
    Or else your channel is perfect!

      Thank you for the feedback! Unfortunately, I don't see the point in walking around eggshells for an educational video. It'd be impossible to make a point if I only used information given in the plot synopsis. I would hope my audience understands that if they want to learn they have to be able to look at good examples and break them down. I could try putting a spoiler warning in the beginning of every video from now on though

    One Punch Man sucks when Saitama is in focus but it's great when it focuses on the other cast members.

    Hey i need your help ,how to protect my manga if i told alot of my story to someone else ,i already do the drawing and writing but sometimes that person helps me in story gaps ,how to secure my work just in case?!

    • @MonitorComics
      @MonitorComics  3 года назад +1

      Thank you for taking the time to share! Unfortunately, there isn't that much you can do to secure your work. Once you begin publishing your work online, like for example posting artwork on social media like Instagram, then you become the copyright holder. So if someone reposts your art you have a case to prove that the character belongs to you. In the early development phases like bouncing ideas around with your friend, it's near impossible to ensure they don't walk off with the idea. I don't want to say just don't talk about your work ever, but there's always going to be the risk that somebody can do the idea before you, so the sooner you get your work out to the public the better. Hope that helps! Best of luck with your story!

    Does not like one punch man because you know the outcome? That’s literally every shonen story yet you still read them. It’s not about knowing that the main character always wins, it’s about the story that happens in between and around the MC. Think Luffy or Goku.

    But Saitama's personal story arc in OPM isn't about fighting. It's about him dealing with his depression from how boring life is now.

    The Video: **Talks about Developing Antagonist and refers to actual characters**
    My Story: **The Antagonist is the world itself** xd
    Edit: the world is not a villain, is an antagonist because my protagonist's character development is directly connected to facing the world's truth.
