  • I went into this video knowing I wouldn't be disappointed but I did go into it with some hesitation and ended up coming out the other side with absolute pleasure! These tracks are really exceptional and it feels like MiHoYo and the Hoyo-mix team have really found a true and unique sound for themselves when it comes to the natlan region. Really cool.

      I hear a lot of Yoruba talking drums and bongos and Clave in a lot of the osts, specifically in the theme that plays at the ancestral temple. Us Cubans are very closely tied with not just Jazz and Cabaret, but also Yoruba culture and music, so hearing such an obscure diaspora finally represented feels so nice.

      To be fair, hope and peace is what defines the people and every group/character we've met so far. The musi seems to be telling us that the war, the bloodshed, the violence doesn't define those of Natlan....rather the war is what they must do to protect hope and peace. The hope, the peace is their reason and their end. Also seen in the lyrics to Natlan where they say it's for their 'ideals, hope, and future'.
      Truly the wilds of Natlan are lovely, bright, and full of life....compared to the hostility of Inazuma's environment or the emptiness of Enkanomiya. @@geraldthegoose1685

      @@geraldthegoose1685Not really if you look at it from a more realistic perspective. Fiction needs to exaggerate or focus on the negatives when it discusses a topic so war is treated with gravitas, but when you're in an actual war, your TV is not going to be talking about casualties, defeats and sacrifices, it's going to be selling war bonds, talk about the bright future that awaits after, sing patriotic hymns that suggest courage and heroism and be abound with propaganda and misinformation to keep you hopeful for the future.
      A book or movie has a message it wants you to get so it focuses on the elements and themes it wants you to read and war is mostly and correctly seen as a tragedy so it's depicted in that way. Real life would much sooner weigh morale and positivity above giving a lesson about the tragedies of war and so those in charge would try to paint an image of urgency coupled with hope that the conflict will end soon. Of course this is a game that is also trying to tell a story, but the point I'm trying to make is that living in wartime won't always match the impressions we get from fiction that is focused on the overarching message.
      Natlan is also extremely similar with the HI3 setting (constant war against a formless enemy that tries to destroy civilization whenever it grows past a certain point, with a grand incomprehensible will behind it) and the major theme there is to fight for all that is "beautiful in the world" so even while it would tackle heavier topics and the despair that a constant war against an unstoppable faceless enemy could create, it was focused on trying to suggest that hope in the darkest of times is needed and that, conversely, despair would lead to desperate decisions ending in even more preventable tragedies. Natlan probably (hopefully) won't go quite that hard, but Hoyo does have experience with the topic so they'll probably try to make the same points and bring up the same themes. It'll surely be an uplifting and wholesome story, one nation before we get to Snezhnaya and finally get some big answers to some big questions.
      That is also not a sarcastic or ironic tagline, HI3 which is one of Hoyo's more serious games (and the origin for the oft quoted "heartwaming, wholesome and uplifting story"), despite its fame as being depresso theater, focuses primarily on themes of hope, love, courage and empathy. That's what I'm expecting to see in Natlan as well, though I do hope they'll have some nice twists on the way.

      @@worm2976 That's a great interpretation, I can't say much about the lore of Natlan since I haven't played much of the story, but what I can tell you is that your idea is really similar to the reality here, especially in previous years. I would add the fight for freedom in our case, since there's always a sense of oppresion when you're dealing with organized crime, corruption, cartels and shit like that.
      Another detail that hits close to home is how well they seem to be adjusted to death, to the point where is just part of the culture. That was actually a really big issue here in colombia (and still is, kinda) bc of how FUCKED were the 80' and early 90' (and years before too, it's just that specifically the 80' were literally called 'The Terror' or 'The Fear').

I know nothing about other cultures) it feels like you are returning to your home after a long journey, I felt the same in Sumeru since I grew up listening to those instruments in particular, since I grew up in Asia. Thus listening to those tracks make me feel right at home of my culture where I belong with similar people who grew up with me experiencing the same. When the first songs came out, right before the 5.0 update, I loved all of them but battle theme 2 was the one that made the most impression on me, because of that little bit you analyse at 6:18. I don't know that much about musical composition, but I was a catholic choir girl, and that melody struck me as profoundly religious - bordering on an elegy. To my brain, it spoke of death and lamenting one's fate, but with hope to the future. Very close to what in Portugal we call 'saudade', the feeling of intensely missing someone or something with no expectation of resolution.
    SPOILER
    .
    .
    .

    Then I played the archon quest and it became very obvious that people in Natlan have a unique relationship with death and a culturally mandated duty of sacrifice that borders on religion, so it makes sense.

Not that I wish to imply that other foreign sounds are inferior, not at all! I'd say the most fitting saying here would be "east or west, home's still the best"

    Honestly the best part is.
    You take people who have never heard these theme songs in certain locations.
    You show them various pictures of the region(like lets say a few photos from People of the springs, children of echoes, the stadium, the scions' dwelling..etc) and play the music. Chances are people would be able to match the music to the place just from the vibe alone quite aptly. Like the music reflects the vibe of the places soo well.

      That's what perfectly well designed music is. It fits the setting. This is also why music composed for something shines brighter than music composed for itself in my opinion.
      It's known scientifically that constraints enhances creativity and not the opposite, and even previous classical works were composed for theaters. Now we have the modern equivalent in video games, movies, anime, series.

    Nice to see ya reacting more to Genshin's music, in spite of the angry and loud minority of haters. Cool to see that you're playing through the story too. Genshin's combat and exploration aren't particularly groundbreaking, so just logging in every patch to do some story is a very valid way to play the game.
    Yeah, Natlan's music is great. The way the cultural instruments and orchestral instruments are used alongside each other reminded me a lot of Sumeru's music, and both instrument types complemented each other quite well.
    I adore how there's more vocals now. Tracks like Maidens of Sanctity and the fatui boss themes were some of my favs due to the vocal elements. In Natlan it reflects the humanity of the archon, and the unity we feel across the region really nicely.
    There's quite a few tracks I'll be eagerly awaiting on spotify 😆
    Genshin's music have carved an identity for itself of fusing cultural music and orchestral music, so when Fontaine came around, it's a soundscape we're quite familiar with. You can't really fuse orchestral with orchestral, and even where they tried to experiment, it didn't feel as culturally grounded as other regions, so that cultural-orchestral fusion wasn't really there. You didn't really get the same awe and intrigue you did with the music of other regions. Fontaine music was still solid, but didn't feel very Genshin coz of that reason.
    I'm glad that Natlan, as a region and with its inspirations and all, let Genshin return to the foundation of it's music, and well it sounds really good. Almost like YPC never left tbh.

That is what I feel when I hear Battle theme 2 (now officially titled "A Dance in Fire"). It's upbeat, adventurous and majestic, and you mentioned the forward momentum and rhythm... It never loses its energy. Whenever I hear this, I instinctively picture Mualani surfing in my mind. It's already easily an all-time favourite battle theme, I've not been able to get it out of my head since 5.0 released!

I missed your commentary during fontaine, while I agree you probably didn't feel much for the music because it is inspired by something that you've been listening to for a very long time already, I think it was amazingly done and probably the best it could've been, maybe your own burnout with the game and the community might've left a bad impression so you're looking at it, the time and the music you listened to now, at a bad light, I loved all of Fontaine's music and everything inbetween like Chenyu Vale that I still listen to looped when needing a relaxing moment. Hope you have a great day.

What a bad luck was mine that just when I was expecting those, what you have already explained about diversifying your content happened, well although I know it won't be soon, but if you are still a little interested in the osts of those areas and in the future you decide to make a video with the best from each region a mentioned, I will gladly watch it. But apart from that, to talk about this video, I love Natlan's music haha, some of the songs seem regular to me and they're kind of good, but the ones that stand out are super catchy haha, especially the ones in the area where the Vastagos of Echo are, who appear as dancers and a DJ, and the battle themes, well, the one that starts with Latin dance music (I don't remember the name but I think you people in the commemts know which one I'm talking about haha but you didn't reacted to that one marco😅 ), with touches of Salsa, even Songo, which is a genre born in my country Cuba, that I find this song incredible how they united so many genres without it seeming too loaded.

    hi Marco! i'm honestly one of the quietest commentor whose doesn't comment very often and when i do it's because i rly want to and feel the "need" to do so, i wanted to say that everytime a new region/boss is released in Genshin/Honkai Star rail i always hope and refresh your channel for your feedback on it, you've maken me a less ignorant person towards music by making me analyzing aspects of it that i've never would've consider, such for example the meaning of a slow tempo that could mean it want to make that moment more of a reflection on what the character is going trough/what's the enviroment of said theme is currently playing on, another example is the humming, it could mean that it's heartfelt/genuine/surely a moment of peace/reminescence, another one is the use of few instruments in the case of your reaction "Zhongli's theme "the listener" you described it as stillness/maturity/confident it wouldn'tve crossed my mind but now you unlocked that ability in my mind where when i analayze osts/themes/pieces i my mind would pingpong between all of those things you indirectly teached thus making us more able to "understand" music in all of it's shapes and form, TY and sorry for that long essay basicly ahahaha as i said, i rly meant every word!

    11:56 I really love this track from the children of echoes area. The instrumentation and rhythm with the drums and flute gives it such an ancient, almost primordial feel, like music a caveman would play if that makes sense. But the synth sounds are the complete opposite, very modern sounds that are only possibly with modern technology, To combine them both in the same track I feel really represents how Natlan is a nation of dragons and humans living together in harmony, with dragons as the original ancient inhabitants of this world and humans as the newest species on the block, with the instruments representing each species respectively.

      when outside forces constantly try to invade and break you, cultural traditions like music are all the more important for people to stay hopeful and keep fighting for a better future.
      i really really love the way natlan is themed in that sense, it really feels like the writers dug into the history of being victims of imperialism that the places inspiring natlan share.
      they really do put so much effort into this with every region and it makes the character skin colour choices all the more bizarre. i have to guess it's a marketing and money decision at this point, since it clashes so much with all the other parts of the narrative.

  • @tawlney
    @tawlney Месяц назад +46

    I actually agree with you with Fontaine's soundtrack vs Natlan at the end. Fontaine often felt it was copying what makes classical great without doing anything all that unique with it. Natlan fully embraces the fusion of tribal nations it's based off of so it ends up sounding way way more diverse.
    Natlan has managed to recapture something that's been missing in Genshin since it launched. Wonder and mysticism. You don't know why things are the way they are here, it looks pretty and it is the most fun to explore since Liyue back in 1.0. It's that good.
    Also nice to see you managed to avoid at least half of Natlan's best pieces (or perhaps most fun). Here's to you being pleasantly surprised in the future!

    • @stormer2349
      @stormer2349 Месяц назад +11

      I agree yeah, Fontaine did feel like it wasn't as unique as the other regions' music.
      To me though, that's just it staying true to its inspiration, so it doesn't bother me too much.
      Genshin's music formula seems to be mixing ethnic instruments and rhythms with orchestra and orchestral instruments to make a new fusion.
      With Fontaine, they're taking inspiration from European music, so they don't really have any different sorta instruments they can combine with orchestra; all those instruments are already. And the things they experimented with like the water instruments, they didn't set the music apart as much as like the Koto of Inazuma, or the Tabla of Sumeru, since they aren't as culturally grounded.
      Belle Epoque France (Fontaine's inspiration) also has a lot of music we find familiar, composers like Saint-Saens and Debussy. The magic of Genshin's music comes from mixing the familiar orchestral instruments with the unfamiliar cultural instruments. So in that sense, Fontaine feels very... familiar, quite safe and not really mysterious and adventurous.
      It feels like something we've heard before because it's a familiar soundscape.

    • @acedias12
      @acedias12 Месяц назад +9

      Not really copying since Fontaine's based on France. And classical music's main roots is Europe. Saying its nothing unique while completely ignoring the fact they used water instruments and the like to add to the tracks.

    • @arcane071
      @arcane071 Месяц назад +2

      I'd like to differ a little bit, in my opinion Sumeru was the last time when we got good music from them and then Fontaine was kinda meh
      Literally all the Sumeru music were peak and now Natlan is continuing that, in fact taking that legacy far

    • @tawlney
      @tawlney Месяц назад

      @@acedias12 I get that. Though since the game's music isn't performed live, you might assume that some of the instruments are more synth based. (which I kinda did). The problem isn't that it wasn't unique, it certainly was. It was just not obviously unique from what I could hear at a glance. Fontaine also in 4.0 didn't have it's frankly better and more unique tracks that came later, which didn't help things for me initially. The starcraft terran style music in the prison sold me that they actually could do something unique, they just hadn't quite figured it out yet.

    Personally Id recommend playing the major patches (the ones featuring region story) and then dropping it for the remaining ~9 months until the next one, if someones purely here for the story/music. Gives a decent balance to be "involved" while not "tied to it" at the same time i find.
    I've taken a few month long breaks at a time myself and couldnt imagine still sticking around without them. You just need that palette cleanser sometimes to not become a "jaded veteran".

    It's interesting they went for a more Aztec feel with some Carribean and South American influence (music and setting). Some Afro-Cuban in there too. I thought they would have gone the more Spaniard route with Flamenco themes. But this is more imaginative. As a criticism, for me, I feel like the tracks lack the tension a lot of other Genshin pieces have that make me want to listen to it over again. Also, can't help but wonder what Yu Peng would have done with it. 🥲 but, not bad. It's at least enough to analyze and talk about.

    Hey marco hope you had an amazing birthday yesterday and ill be honest while i wasnt the biggest fan of fontaine ost compared to others (inazuma by beloved) it was still great B tier but it was like trying to scratch that itch and almost getting there but not quite, however for Natlan it was like hoyomix understood the assignment and listened to the feedback to the point i wouldn't be surprised if YPC would occasionally come in and give some pointers to his successors because when i first listened to the ost shown at the beginning which was also used for the first natlan trailer it was a "chat we are so back" and i knew it was gonna be my favorite because the trailer ended as soon as the vocals came in and by then i was already hooked but to have the entire region ost being banger after banger it was surreal. Sorry for the yapping but i just cant get over how great the soundtrack was lmao
