Perhaps no branch line in the world is as both simultaneously famous and obscure as the Wisbech & Upwell Tramway. Known for its iconic steam trams, the little railway carried out a peaceful existence for many decades, and while its fame would come too late to save it, it retains a unique place in British railway history. What if we could revisit the railway as it was back in the day? Are there things we can learn from exploring the Tramway in a simulator? We’ll turn back time, at the railyard!

After all this time. After 7 years of waiting. He's back.
The last one three years ago actually
@@coalandsteelrailroadvideos1342 I mean, it wasn't really a route review tho, so you could say this is the first "proper" episode of At The Railyard since then.
The king hath return
You’ve captured this all so beautifully. My family and I have lived in Wisbech and the surrounding area for generations and I’ve always been fascinated by the tramway. You’ve totally nailed the essence of it. There’s not a huge amount of footage of the tramway around from it’s heyday, and today there’s very little trace of it left to revisit, so this video will really resonate with a lot of people. Absolutely incredible work, thank you, sincerely, for bringing this to life.
Thank you very much!
It's back! This series is great, and I hope to see more of it. Even if this is just a one-off, it's great to see an episode of this series again.
There could certainly be more episodes in the future. It all comes down to whether something inspires me to do so.
Ah yes, At the Railyard. How I missed this show.
Also, it tackles the railway Toby (from Thomas and Friends) is based upon.
People are very familiar with Toby and the name "Wisbech & Upwell", but my goal was to go deeper into the history of the Tramway itself.
@@NickOzorak And you've done so well. I salute you for making the project so magnificent.
Like many others I had heard of this line through Toby being based on it, but I never knew the history. Very interesting and beautifully recreated!
My absolute favorite series!!
Sweet another ATR, see you in 4 years lol
Great work nick
I give the Wisbech & Upwell Tramway my seal of approval with a final score of 100% and platinum certification
Thank you very much!
Before the J70s came along, they used smaller Y6 class 0-4-0s on this line. Not long ago I made a video about the history of the Y6, mostly using footage from Train Simulator classic.
And it's a decent video I enjoyed watching 💯💯
You did a fantastic job adding classical music Nick. By the way, I noticed this Brake-van from Thomas and Friends at 7:52 since I recognized the conductor inside. Plus, these steam trams and shunter diesel are indeed like Mavis and Toby.
Back to the railyard!
The amount of detail of this route, and its assets is magnificent.
All my
Life…i hoped an prayed for this…they were answered
Gee. England, along with Wales, is a Haven riddled with railways serviced to lots and lots of good-looking trains that came and went, huh? The steam tram trains in particular are the coolest locomotives I've seen - what with their short stature, their square wooden outlook, and their side plated covered wheels with cowcatcher plows at each end. Quite the fascinating eye-catchers.
I was born in Wisbech 77 years ago. Toby ran at the top of my road so I used to see it every day. Never realised how famous he was to become. It was a wonderful time back then .
Love this series and glad to see it back in some form! Eger to give it a go when its out Nick. Hoping to see more in future!
Just shows what you can do with the right amount of time and patience. Train sims open the door to relive an era long gone or do operate equipment long gone or equipment that they'll never get to operate IRL. Good job, Nick.
This. is. amazing!!! I loved it from the first sight!
Certainly a commendable amount of work and very nicely modeled
Wonderful to see nick!
Fantastic presentation and production quality. Better than ever.
Very convincing. You have captured the feeling of the area very well.
I live very close to the old Wisbech and Upwell tramway. Much missed. Brilliant video.
You've done a fine job with the route, video production and choice of music. Well done.
It was this series that I also discovered lots of good music.
This show has always been a creative playground for me to experiment with different genres of music. I'm glad you've enjoyed the song selections!
Very cool British Tramway. I really like the steam tram a lot.
Thanks Nick - loved to see your train-sim rendition and also appreciate the mentions of the Bramley Line which could reopen soon as either a light railway or a heritage railway. Don't think the railway to Upwell could ever be restored, but it will always be in our memories.
To reopen the W&U in it's entirety, they'd have to pull my sister's house down as she lives on the site of the old yard at Upwell.
Simply awesome work!!!! And preserve the history in virtual world is absolutly necesary, i applaude you for all your work!!!
Thank you very much!
I am legit blown away by how good this route looks. Fine work, Nick!
Thanks!
Peter Paye he goes to my railway club. Although I don’t think I’ve met him. He’s written a few books about branch lines in East Angelia.
I will be honest, digital railways don't move me the same way that model railways do. However, this has impressed me no end, I can see all the photo's you've used and replicated. I have to say I'm very impressed with your work! You have captured my love for the area and feel of East Anglia (A I lived in for 26 Years) So well that I felt I wasn't watching a Sim but a model. I am a keen O Gauge (7mm) modeller and I have found the Wisbech & Upwell Tramway, Kelvedon & Tollesbury & the Thaxted branch as key inspiration for my layout Thurstable Lane.
Thank you. It's reassuring to know that I captured the feel from someone who lived there.
This was a fun one, especially since this is actuallly pretty local to where I grew up, it's a shame I missed the golden age of rail in the UK, but its nice to learn about the history
The background Music is well chosen, from former times, even if earlier than the Railway; but exemplifying the slower pace of agricultural life of the time.
Bravo.
Thank you. Classical music was a genre I hadn't fully explored in previous episodes, and this felt like a good time to use it.
I was lucky to see a train on the line in 1966, loco plus 2 coal wagons and a brake van, locos used on the line were D2200, D2201, D2202 and D2203, though mainly the first 2 were used and D2203 was very rarely used, only D2203 survives today, sadly I never got the number of my sighting in 1966
As somebody who grew up near Wisbech and spent most of my bus driving career running the former route of the line, I'm very very excited to see this realised. It's a shame how there is so little of it left now, but if you know where to look, there's still the signs.
The landscape around there really has changed.
Love your game review series! meanwhile I think the steam loco's name is Toby (Thoms & Friends)😂
Let's go Nick!
Me: "I wonder why this particular episode took so long to make..."
Nick "This is my creation"
Me: "Ohhhh"
hi,Thanks~nice traveling! I'll be bcak~🤘
Oldies but Goldies
The Reverend W.Awdry's church was only 3.5 miles from the Wisbech tramway and he visited it frequently.
The real life "Toby" was J70 68226 and it was the last J70 used on the line. Awdry created the character "Toby" after 68226 was withdrawn.
"Mavis", the Drewry 0-6-0 class 04 diesel mechanical tram engine, was also based on a real Wisbech locomotive. The Drewry was capable of a top speed of 29 MPH ((or 45 MPH if a suitable coin was added to the governor).
The J70 class tram engines replaced the earlier underpowered GER Y6 class 0-4-0 tram engines. The J70 class were designed specifically for the line.
i will be there i download every train sim i can find this looks awesome
Essex, Cambridgeshire, Suffolk and Norfolk.
The design of the J70 steam tram engine was used to create Toby the Tram Engine, in the original Railway Series Books written by Wilbert Awdry. I have the new Bachmann 00 gauge Toby and Henrietta models in my collection. Top that if you can.😂
Toby!!
I saw that steam engine as a kid and I have always been fascinated.
Today I learned WHY it was so unique in design and the reasoning for it turning out the way it did...
Hush kits for steam locomotives :D
Alt. title: Frank talks about the railway Toby and his siblings worked on for 10 minutes (Great video though :)
i love this video as the J70 is my flagship loco in my hundred plus fleet and my YT channel and insta Icon
I wonder which one of those trams is the one that becomes number 7, while one the coaches is Henrietta.
According to the Railway series by Rev. Wilbert awdry, the real Toby is BR 68221 because that is the engine that Wilbert, his wife, and children got to ride on thanks to a friendly crew when they went on holiday.
@@nickaprill5427 Yes indeed.
WHAT ITS BACK
Amazing video, I grew up just outside Wisbeach and this captures the feel of the fen very well. Is this train sim?
Yeah cant help but subscribe to this. This is gorgeous. What sim it thus and where do i add tge route to my collection?
Trainz Railroad Simulator 19.
You should look at the count of monster disco one of these Octobers
I wish I could go visit and find me a nice decent place in England to live that's close to a tramway branch line railroad. I kinda feel like if I had the incredible talent to build me a steam tram locomotive to own all for myself, I could perhaps work as a content railroader. So many things to discover out there that I want to discover, learn and experience than the shit I come across to living in America that doesn't exactly have as much to bare, other than the multiculturalisms of people from different parts of the real world that come here to live in peace, civility, and prosperous livelihood.
Can't wait to see the route. And with rapido train doing so much will Wisbech and upwell tramway me plan is with next layout it to build some part of this line. As I got one of the rapido train pack on order with the coaches. Will them doing class 04,03 I'm really hoping we get a tram version. But your route look amazing did great job on it. Will this route been free on trainz download station thanks 👍? Where this route come out it going to be two favourite route next to the new version of Swanage route. But have a great weekend.
This route will be released on the Download Station.
Where did you get the models of the J70, coaches, and luggage van
I'd say this route is A REAL KNOCKOUT!!!
This route looks awesome, I’ll be checking out the livestream but take me a while to get through haha, just want to ask is there any way off getting this or is it a straight up no cuz I would love it, also we’re you get your loco and stuff from?
What version of TRS19 will this be for? I hope it’s Sp4: TTTE script issues prevent me from upgrading to SP5 and head codes may be a mixed bag with Camscott's locos in TRS22
Great creation! Is Toby your favorite character in the RWS and T&F?
It is mine.
Please do Run8 v3
1:45 That’s one of Mavis’ siblings!
Nick do you have a track plan of the modeled line?
If you go to maps.nls.uk, select "Map Finder", and choose Background Map - OS 1900s, you can navigate historic maps in a manner similar to Google Maps. These have incredible detail, including the Tramway.
I thought that Toby had a whistle for showing cows off the tracks
Toby the Steam Tram Engine.
Hi Nick, I downloaded the route for TRS19 along with the rolling stock from the links in your livestream, however there is a bunch of missing assets that the DLS doesn't recognise. Is there any way you can help with sourcing them? I have a list of the missing files, all the descriptions simply say "
Make sure you read the description for files available elsewhere. There is also a support thread for the route on the Auran forums where you can share the KUIDs.
Mavis the Quarry Diesel Shunter.
Your voice sounds familiar. Did you voice Frank from the San Juan branch line series?
Yes.
i would like to ask could you show in the description or tell us where to find the timetable for the wisbech and upwell
The book by Peter Paye has timetables. Unfortunately I'm not aware of any being posted online.
@@NickOzorak can i find this book on amazon
I can't download the J70's / C53's... I have the route, not the trains.
F to all of tobys siblings
hmmm, some aspects of the landscape and track set-up have a North-American flavour to them. Like single track, but wide path through the landscape. English RR's had to buy each square meter of land and would not buy two lanes and lay one. The absence of embankments. Than again it might just be the cowcatcher and bogie coaches with open balconies :) I know they are authentic, but they do look out of place.
It minds of East Anglia.
Will this be the full length of the rl route ?
Yes. You'll get to see it in the livestream.
@@NickOzorak Thank you for the reply. I so can't wait to dive a 1 to 1 accurate route of this tramway.
Toby
Which American state would be considered the Pennsylvania of the Early-20th Century?..
i was honestly hoping this route was public
guessing its private, for zero reason
It’s coming out February 2
I mention that it will be publicly released at the end of the video.
What game is this?
Trainz Railroad Simulator 19
