The student choir at my school did this song last year. We'd lost a grade 12 student to suicide, and 4 more within the community. It was a beautiful, meaningful performance, and I'm so thankful for this song and musical.

2: I'd like to say I'm very thankful for this comment because it gave me the idea to email my choir teacher to ask if we could do this song. It's coronavirus time and so online school, whooo... So she asked us to do a vocal bingo thingy and one of the squares was to recommend her a song, so I took my chance and recommended this song. It's a long email and since we're in the kinda younger grades I don't know if we're gonna do this song because of it being about suicide and the musical just being not for kids in general, but I really do hope she considers it. So thank you just so much for making this comment two years ago so that I had this idea ^^ I'll edit if we actually do this song for the concert (which is very unlikely but let me dream)!
Bird of a Feather i’m late to reply to this comment. it’s okay, but about a year ago a boy in my grade, only 13, committed suicide. it was hard on my whole class, and i only just now listen to this song and it has so much meaning.

She wont tell us what us wrong and when we ask her if shes ok, she says shes fine but I know she isnt and I dont want anything to happen that would be unfixable but I dont know what to do to help her because she won't speak to us and i really dont know what to do and i worry so much about her 😓

When I first heard this was when they performed at the Macy's parade.
I had to leave the room and hide in the downstairs bathroom.
Because it was just weeks after I sunk down so low that I almost lost everything. I was so close.
The second time I heard it was on Broadway, and I teared up. I didn't cry, but I almost did. I did start sobbing from the transition of Words Fail and So Big/So Small. Because that conversation between Evan and his mom was similar to the one I had with my mom, who was in the theatre with me, and I just started crying. And then my mom grabbed my hand and squeezed it during the scene and then I was sobbing.

i'm going through parental abuse my father always hurts me really bad and my mother too it happends since i was a little baby i got to the point of cutting and trying to kill myself but listening to this soing has been my escape to feel better and talking to my best friend and now i'm a teenager and the abuse has gotten worse

I have major anxiety. When I was in sixth grade I had a panic attack before a choir performance. A few friends of mine turned on this song and it calmed me down a bit. They did give to play it from a far because I get *very* territorial when I'm having a panic attack.
So to sum it all up, this song helps me to this day.
I don't know how to say this, but I'm just so thankful for this song. Being bullied by past friends of toxic friendships, and by my peers for having high anxiety and often times freaking out over nothing, I was ready to end it all, but this song made me realize that I'm not the only one struggling, and that I had to keep fighting. Today I am 6 months clean of self harm, and I feel so thankful. My choir director told me about this song after she heard about my situation. She was often times the only person I would talk to for days, the only person who could get me to eat sometimes while struggling with anorexia nervosa. I am alive right now, and I can't say that my life is magically better, but I know that I'm not alone. There is so much I want to say about this song, but since this comment will only get lost in the sea of comments, I will leave it off here. Just please, whoever is reading this, know that you aren't alone, you deserve to be alive, and even if it doesn't seem like it, someone would be devastated if you died, I would be. I don't know you, but if you can relate to me in the ways I have stated above, you need to know that you are a beautiful person, no matter what you think. Please, take sometime to think about everything you do. Don't hurt yourself, eat food, drink water, take your meds, whatever it takes to maintain a healthy life style, but most importantly, have the courage to exist.
Edit: I posted this comment 1 year ago yesterday. Reading it made me cry. I was in such a bad place, but I'm here a year later to say I have been found. I'm in an amazing place and I'm really happy. I have off days like everyone else, but I'm SO FREAKING THANKFUL TO BE ALIVE. PLEASE REMEMBER THAT NO MATTER HOW HELPLESS YOU FEEL, THERE IS SOMETHING TO LOOK FORWARD TO. I didn't believe it, but all I can imagine right now is how many things I never would have done, how many amazing people I never would have met if i had took my own life. Please keep going! I used to be a really horrible and manipulative person. Realizing that my popularity only came from being close friends with a cool girl made me lose some self esteem since that girl had been showing some toxic signs. I started being warm to the people I hurt but knowing that I'm liked because someone said i was made me think that I would never have anyone like me for me. I'm trying my best to forgive people but that made me self aware that i was also being cruel to them for not liking their taste. I could have friends but either they would hate me or I would hate them and I could have friends who match me exactly but they would end up moving schools or being the most toxic person i ever met. I kept making excuses that ' oh she revealed to everyone about my crush' or 'oh she kicked me in the stomach' It kinda ends up making me too nice or too mean. I couldn't draw that line on being a human being. Dear evan hansen helped me a bit by making me feel wanted

Why are you here? No matter if you pray or not, you may not know. Your life may feel without purpose. When you walk over to the corner store, you kick a can off the sidewalk. Because you kick that can away, you save someone's life. No one falls and dies. That may be your purpose.
None of us know why we are here. People filled with faith think they know, but they do not. Your purpose may not be known to you. But you're accomplishing things every day. One day you kick that can away, another day you prevent a fire when you step on a burning cigarette butt.
None of us gets out alive. Death comes soon enough. There's no need to rush it. Around the corner, love may walk in to your life and stay awhile. You do not know. No one does.
You may hurt like hell. You just want it to end. It does. Time cures most wounds of the soul. Medicine and therapy help too. The pain doesn't last forever. It just feels that way.
What to do with all that pain? Go to a 12 step meeting. Listen. No matter how bad things are for you, you'll hear stories of someone who's got it worse. Maybe things aren't that bad. The person who spoke is in recovery and getting better. You can get better too.

Wow, at a time going through depression and mental health, I have been in the state mind that I wanted to kill myself, which I almost did 2 times. I finally spoke it out this year of 2021 within having it for years now and I am so glad that I did. Everybody has been there for me. Watching the Broadway and just watched the movie version yesterday, made me realize that we aren't alone. There are people out there who need help. That is why always check up on your friends or relatives, cause you will never know what they are going through.
And I regretted everything I have did to my family, friends, and classmates

I broke down when I first heard this song. Anxiety, depression, loneliness, fear, anger, and sadness burdened me so much for years. I have no friends in school and everybody hated me. Then this song suddenly came up on my random Spotify musical playlist, and I didn’t regret it. This song made me realise that I’m not alone. I never was. I used to hate myself a lot, I used to self harm, I was so desperate and miserable especially last year. Toxic people surrounded me. I was basically the outcast of my school.
But I’m in a much better place now. I am proud to say that I am now free from anxiety and depression. I learned to love myself again. And now I am singing this song to past self. I felt like this after my Soul Mate of 30 years suddenly passed away. I hit rock bottom and went to a really dark place, having horrible dark thoughts. I truly believe that even now he is right beside me and still watching over me sending gifts and people into my life when they are needed. While I was having these dark thoughts about doing stupid things, Rob came into my life. He'd been to the same dark place that I had found myself and he had even acted on the dark thoughts. Happily for us it didn't work and we found each other. We have become the best of friends and we just pull each other up when darkness tries to take control again. This song is absolutely our song and it doesn't matter how many times I listen to it, it makes cry floods of tears and makes me feel so lucky that I was found. We sang this song at a choir concert and this was our closing song. After the song was over all of us went on stage crying and hugging our choir director because this would be our last concert with him. He was moving to Illinois to be closer to family. When ever I hear this song I think of him.

we're doing this song in our choir this year and I'm sobbing because this song stopped me from suicide so many times
I have depression, and of course I haven’t told anyone. But no matter how much I wanna die, I will not go through with it. When I found the book dear Evan Hansen it was a wake up call, and then I found the musical. It’s been a few years since then, I’m not happy but I’m not done yet. And the fact that I’m saying “yet” is enough hope for me. I just wish people would actually Stand up and say “guys wake the fuck up!” Because people are killing themselves every day and it’s just becoming a normal part of life...... like we have that choice, but as long as I’m alive I refuse to let that be a choice to anyone. We’re the next generation of adults guy...... if we don’t take a stand who will!??? I’m making it my mission to spread more knowledge on mental health, everyone should know what it looks like and how to find it. Imagine how much happier our world would be if we had people looking out for each other! I promise To myself, everyone already gone, and those still here....... the battle will be won. ✊🏻 you are not alone, and I’m sending hugs and love to all!!!!
