Leaving Maylebone is a rising gradient and, with quite a heavy load at 10 and no oil-can giving a shove, it would be asking for trouble to open the regulator too far: indeed, in final seconds, as the driver does push on a bit, you can hear and see a slight slip. Castles easily have the power for such a load and GWR engines were famous for not slipping, but there are limits even for them.
Well mate, if you were driving you would probably put her into a very nasty slip and totally mess everything up for everyone concerned - what we saw there there was a very delicate control of the regulator by an experienced and competent driver - I'd like to see you do better !
@@BernieHollandMusic A slip is not the end of the world - a good driver can control it instantly. There must be other reasons for this very easy-going departure. There's quite a gradient coming up and the driver will simply have to give the loco some welly. Maybe he just thought there was no need to hammer it until on the gradient.
Remember these beauties as a lad in Paddington Stn, in the late 80s i worked with an ex GWR fireman, he said what hard work it was, and how he hated working with some drivers as the rinsed through the coal.
The Mighty Castle in person !!!

Great video she always seems to put on a performance. What fantastic condition she looks in as well.
Not sure about that Hawksworth tender though, flush sided, I prefer the flared and riveted tender
