The reason Glavenus' tail feels like it takes so long to break is because while you can damage it whenever, you can only break it when it's actually red hot which really doesn't help with how high up it is 😂
Yeah which is why Valor Longsword in MHGU works so great against glavenus lol. "Oh you are trying to attack me with the GS Spin? Too bad, here is Guard point." I've cut many Glavenus' tail thanks to that
the tail being so high up really makes it hard to severe it. everytime I see the tail gets red hot, my first priority it get a topple, mount, or wall bang so I can severe tail more easily
I always thought this was one of the most clever ideas for a monster in this series based on mechanics alone. It's a monster that sharpens its OWN weapon to use on YOU!
I like how G and GU sorta makes the main monsters a bit like Hunters. Glavenus uses a huge sword, Nakarkos makes armor and weapons outta dead things, Ahtal-Ka exists. It's also really cool that if rustrazor doesn't constantly sharpen, their blades rust quickly, showing that their sharpening is something they picked up quickly, not something they've had a lifetime to work on, and that it's more of a topical benefit, rather than a physiological one like Glavenus. My guess about why the tail looks blue is the oxidizing of a layer of steel on top; the cracked gaps look black because it's probably more like cast iron, but the layer on top is constantly ground down and heated by the teeth and throat, so leftover eaten minerals might be mixed into the tail to turn it to steel.
It's more akin to fire painting since I can turn steel blue when u expose a polished or freshly grind surface to a hot flame (like a oxi fuel torch) to change the surfaces color depend on length of exposure to the flame
I suspect that the reason Glavenus isn't as hated as Deviljho might have something to do with its method of conflict resolution. Both Glavenus and the Hunter recognize that a broken blade means defeat, and given the monster's stated high intelligence, it's possible that human-Glavenus clashes have an abnormally high rate of non-lethal resolution.
You know, that’s a really smart idea! Even if Glavenus weren’t as intelligent, that sort of behavior is almost certainly instinctual enough that they’d still do it for Greatsword wielders, at the very least!
The real reason is most likely that Deviljho are ecological disasters in two legs. A Glavenus might bully the local wildlife on occasion, but Deviljho consume so much food that if they aren’t driven off or slain they can cause local extinctions.
@@cryamistellimek9184 I still think that is just a myth because a single specimen destroying an ecosystem is absurd unless it's a black dragon. I hate the concept of black dragons.
Several things: 1.)When you were talking about the toxic compounds that Glavenus deal with in their volcanic environments, it made me wonder if it recycles then into its tail to give it its incendiary properties, similar to a match head. 2.)I wonder how Glavenus deals with other volcanic ore-eaters like Gravios, Uragaan, and especially Teostra? Teostra is especially important since it hordes ore deposits for the same reason as a male Glavenus does. 3.)Lastly, when you mentioned that Glavenus may have to learn to use their tails instead of instinctually knowing how to use it, it made me think of a Glavenus chick spinning its tail in the air like a baby elephant will sometimes do with its trunk since elephants must also gradually learn how to use their signature appendage.
I really appreciate how smart Glavenus is shown to be. Instead of another big, dumb brute, it really seems like each individual puts a lot of thought into each decision.
@@reallycantthinkofausername487 I'm super late, but the Sunbreak phylogenetic tree actually clarifies that they are incertae sedis within true wyverns, but most closely related to the flying wyverns.
I can imagine rich people in the monster Hunter world raising glavenus and feeding them really expensive ore as some sort of status symbol because you could tell the quality of its diet based on the color of the tail.
Cool as hell to think about, I'll def be nabbing this idea, wanted to do a MH DnD Campaign with friends and this seems like a lovely bit of worldbuilding op for non-hunters.
I like how the concept art makes the tail of Glavenus look like an actuial glaive as opposed to a sword, though I worry if they turned it into an actual monster, they would try to give it parallels to the Insect Glaive like normal Glavenus has to the Great Sword. Everyone gangster till the Brute Wyvern screams 'Je suis monté!'.
There are monsters that depict certain weapons like: Duramboros as Hammer. Glavenus and Acidic Glavenus as GS and LS respectively. Lance is uh.. Agnaktor?
Giving glavenus an abelisaurid type head is honestly a really nice design addition when you consider their jaws were designed for gripping rather than slicing
Saddest truths in Monster Hunter: Deviljho dont eat their own tails. Lagiacrus has not been in a mainline game since 3U. AND WORST OF ALL... Glavenus dosent have a turf war with Rathian ;-;
It's interesting that juvenile glavenus learn tail skills from their mothers. This means that the females have pretty significant tail mineralization too. I'd imagine their heat stacks are much smaller, since they don't help with display as much, and perhaps for gameplay purposes their tails might be more spear-like in shape and usage if they ever appeared in a future game
Please consider perhaps a one off pikmin game ecology for a future video. Its a series that goes to some lengths to explain its weird cartoony creatures.
I think one thing you left out is you barely mentioned it's intellect, whereas in generations, it's specifically noted that the Glavenus stalks and sets an Ambush for the Hunter. I don't think the Glavenus sees Hunter's as "Just Gnats" and instead looks to them as a challenge.
not a challenge but a threat to its safety, a Glavenus that was hunted and survived the hunt will target the hunters either for revenge or for eliminating a threat to its, it's mates and its children's safety, another possibility is that it attacks hunter for their weapons and armor rich mineral, this type of Glavenus can become a specialized manhunter seeking hunters party with every opportunity it has and planning to take them down raiding villages for ore that the smith shop has or the ore deposits a mining village has.
Yeeeeees, very excited! Even with the whole "look at how cool this boss fight is" thing Glavenus has going, it's got a lot of interesting features and behaviours. Also Acidic Glavenus has to be my favourite subspecies as it's actually got a different body structure and behaviours unlike pinky and azure. And it fits its environment so well and doesnt leave it coughbanbarocough
I just realized, the on Glav's tail might be inspired by tempering. The jurassic frontier shows marks of where a glavenus rubbed its tail on the wall, and the marks are blue, although the fact that glavenus's tail heats up when rubbed in the Gen cinematic means it could just be that glavenus is also tempering the ore as it rubs it onto his tail. the tail also heats up really easily and a lot so it's definitely not identical to any real iron ores so the blue could also/instead be from these impurities.
29:44 Hellblades fight actually changes a bit when you severe its tail. Instead of going for tail attacks itll mostly focus on shooting you with projectiles and run around the map (it was honestly really annoying)
The horn core thermoregulation makes me feel better about the giant godzilla-shaming spikes, but I like the simpler spikes on concept art. Honestly Glavenus culturally seems like a perfect "noble beast" people would love to put on flags or as a symbol. It "wields" a weapon and looks armored like a knight. It would probably be like how lions aren't any nicer to be around than hyenas or wolves, but they *look* regal so they have gotten more cultural significance
I like glavenus’s theme. The loud instruments really tell you how dangerous a carnotaurus with a giant greatsword on its tail can be, and the sounds that sound like pickaxes mining ores in the background fit its lore. The actual song itself is odd but I don’t really see how they could’ve made a fitting song for it, especially because (to my knowledge) it doesn’t really have any cultural aspects to its design other than a big red dinosaur with a sword on its tail.
Glavenus made me realize that there should be an herbivore that can counter certain monsters. A beast that can sharpen its tail regularly and heat it up makes made me feel that Larinoth was a missed opportunity to make a living shield monster. There's something very wrong when a beast as massive as a gammoth could be taken down in a single strike from Glavenus. On another note i like how Glavenus was following the adaptations of other brute wyverns in the consumption of ore like Uragaan and to a lesser degree, Brachydios. Next weapon monster, sword and shield crab!
Glavenus to me always seemed like an example of how Brute Wyverns were just larger raptorial Bird Wyverns. The primary use of tail and bite attacks, but turned up several notches compared to what the raptors usually do. Also, the Fire element attacks make enough sense from a biological standpoint- the friction created from its teeth and the tail blade creates sparks, which then ignite. Edit: The Manta sleep masks really work. I've had one for about a year and a half now, can't go to sleep without it. The pads are quite comfortable over the eyes, and block out quite a lot of light. If there's any sponsor I'd be fine with on this channel, Manta is one.
With Glavenus and Goss Harag, I wonder if viewing swords through the lens of phallic imagery might help us understand their evolution. Aside from being used in a fight, a blade might be used as an actual display of a bull's sexual prowess and abilities. The bigger the sword the bigger the, well y'know. This has the benefit of being used for combat, but might deter combat between species members. Glavenus bulls don't need to fight, they just need to flash their swords to one another and they can immediately see who has the bigger sword with more reach and a healthier blade.
I really like the use of sexual selection to explain the attacking tail, as well as self defense against smaller monsters. I remember Dr. Dave Hone reviewing the slasher dino from Terra Nova and laughing at how ridiculous it would be to evolve an attacking tail specifically for catching prey.
I’ve thought of a neat Skill idea for both species of Glavenus! The Skills could be a feature of their weapons, or armor set Skills, but the ideas were too good to stay in my head! *Disintegrating Blade:* Similar to Frostcraft, acidic crystals build up on your weapons over time. These crystals increase your RAW, but lower your Affinity. Breaking the crystals gives you a massive temporary Affinity buff, but also removes the RAW buff from the crystals. To break the crystals, you must either land a certain attack or combo, depending upon your weapon. The potency of the Affinity buff depends upon how much the crystals had built up upon your weapon when you broke them; once the Affinity buff ends, there will be a brief period before the crystals begin to grow on your weapon again. *Burning Blade:* Similar to the Heat Gauge of old Gunlance, it builds up “heat” to increase the damage of physical attacks, but has different drawbacks and accumulation. Heat is built up by simply performing attacks or charging them, and depletes gradually when not attacking or rapidly when sheathed. While a weapon is hot, Sharpness consumption is increased and one in every ___ shots consume an additional ammo or coating.
A fantastic video, I always wrote off the "single egg per season" as being one of the more out there ecologies (and not surprising given how overhyped Glavenus tended to be when Generations released), but I'm glad you managed to make sense out of that bizarre bit of ecology for this monster. Acidic Glavenus' adaptation to the vale is also far more fleshed out than I initially thought, and I only hope subspecies of the rest of the Fated Four learn from what Acidic did and not from what Violet Mizu did. Super excited for the Royal Ludroth episode, as a Tri baby I have a strong connection to monsters introduced in that game and the Ludroths have always been such well designed monsters.
I think that, if they were to make more Glavenus subspecies, it would be pretty interesting if they made them with different bladed weapons as their tails, like a thin, long rapier-like tail with rapid thrusts, or a large, chunky axe tail that moves slower but hits significantly harder.
I consistently love the work and passion put into every one of these videos, they're fantastic. Looking forward to next time's soggy boy. speaking of soggy, have you ever thought about/had any interest in doing an episode on Subnautica? The wealth of database entries and apparent focus on evolutionary design for the creatures in 4546B's ocean make it feel like a(n un)natural fit for the channel.
It’s tough to convey my excitement about when I saw the thumbnail for this one. Glavenus is (after Tigrex and Garuga) the one monster I was looking forward to you covering the most. On a side node, it was very trippy to hear you say “So I can drone you to sleep at night” during the sleep mask ad, since that’s usually what I use your videos for at 3 am. I usually pass out around 15 minutes in, so I can watch each video around 4-5 times (my record being 9 for the one about subspecies). Your voice and cadence are absolutely perfect for it, along with the content itself since I can listen with my eyes closed and the lack of a story driven narrative means I can just watch the video again if I miss anything by falling asleep. Thank you for your service, and the absolutely top-tier content.
30:02 That's exactly why i prefer the World rendition of his theme. The old theme is good, but it's almost too bombastic for a monster that doesn't rely on crushing to kill you (It's more thrusts, slices and sweeps). Yes the World theme is less punchy, but that's the whole point for me : the more orchestral version with the violin, makes the monster less brutish, more subtle and delicate. In MHGU I felt like I was hunting a monster, in Iceborne, on top of that, it felt like a real samurai duel (damn the first time was epic as f), that feeling is further amplified with the subspecies.
The way I see is it is the iceborne theme fits Acidic Glavenus better than base Glavenus. Acidic is based around swift and sweeping movements like a long sword (which also fits your samurai example) whereas base Glavenus is based on big hefty attacks like a great sword
I dont think any other video makes me want to see their monsters lore expanded on more. I don't know how it would work in a game where the major gameplay loop involves ecocide, but a game where you could see not just turf wars, but also mating, more advanced foraging than "run into zone with herbivore then kill with weak bite attack and ignore hunter," monster culture, and raising young to adulthood would be amazing. Maybe in a game where you play as the monster that would work, but that sounds like it would take a decade to develop
17:49 With this reference to culture in the animal kingdom... I'm kinda reminded of the Tulkun from The Way of Water. Could we get an ecology video about them and see how they compare to whales of earth?
IMO Acidic Glavenus is ons of the best subspeciaes ever introduced in the series. It's the same old "opposite element" gimmick many subspecias get, and instead uses the enviroment as inspiration for a unique gimmick. I also like how the blade attacks are faster as it seem the bladetail is lighter than regular Glavenus. Overall Glavenus is a great addition to the brute Wyvern roster.
I think they should have gone further with acidic by making it leaner to really sell that it’s all about faster, less powerful, but no less deadly strikes as opposed to normal Glavenus’s strikes that are reasonably fast and hit like a truck.
Glavenus is my absolute favourite member of the Fated Four. I just really grew to love him in MHGU, and something about him speaks to me more than the other 3. And Royal Ludroth is an old rival of mine since the days of MH3. We've been going at it for several games, and despite being technically quite an easy Monster, he always manages to trip me up and catch me by surprise. As far as Glavenus's ecology is concerned, I think it might well be more of an ambush predator, minimizing damage to its tail by focusing on precise strikes to instantly cleave through prey before they know what hits them.
Dr. Dave Hone review to slasher dino in terra nova and laughing about it says it's would be ridiculous to animal evolve its tails to specifically catching prey
@@jonesrizal8981 And most animals aren't as durable and tough as MH Monsters. Not to mention the likes of Malzeno and Magnamalo have tails evolved for just such a purpose.
@@jonesrizal8981 Glavenus also lives in areas with armoured prey like Apceros and Rhenoplos. And I'm not exactly suggesting it goes full tail mode, but just ambushes prey with the extended reach of its tail blade. Gotta remember that, while it does adhere to real-world ecology a lot, the MH setting does still use fantastical means of achieving that. Such an efficient and dedicated cutting implement would definitely be put to use in everyday use.
@@GunlessSnake if glavenus want to ambushes rhenoplos and apceros, he just flip them off their back to exposed their stomach to give strong crunching bite. They are small after all and glavenus don't want spend more energy. Glavenus should have uses tail to cutting of big armored shell prey like Volvidon
I really like the idea of monsters who have essentially Hunter Weapons on their bodies. Like, Glavenous may very well be the inspiration for the invention of the Great Sword. Brachydios for the Hammer, Diablos for the Lance, Nargacuga for the Duel Blades, etc etc. Which is one reason I'd love to see Poborubarumu return. Its a Flying Wyvern that essentially uses a Hunting Horn to buff itself. Early Hunters could very well have seen a Poborubarumu fight, and be inspired to create a weapon based on it.
It just occurred to me that besides thermoregulation, another function of Glavenus’ giant back spikes could be weight distribution. Notice how the largest spikes are situated directly above its two legs. Not only is Glavenus’ tail huge, but extremely heavy due to its metallic and mineral makeup. In order to stay balanced while swinging its prominent tail, the bipedal Glavenus would need something to keep its center of mass central, so maybe that is another purpose of the initially ridiculous looking back spikes.
I personally like the Iceborne version of Glavenus' theme more than the original. The original's alright, but the Iceborne version really gives me a serious "Emotional Clash of Rivals" vibe, which fits considering he became my favourite monster in the series the moment I first fought him. Also, the fact that Glavenus is smart enough to do things such as decapitate a Deviljho really is a testament to its intellectual superiority over all other brute wyverns.
I wonder how a Glavenous would react to seeing a Rusted Kushala or the molt. It would be cool to see a cutscene or 1 of those intro scenes that many documentaries do where the camera tracks something that is flying. Once the Kushala has found a spot to molt the camera stays for a couple minutes then you see a Glavenous pop out from behind some bushes and it then approaches the molt.
Been catching up on the backlog of these since I havent watch any in a while, have to say while it definetly made me more intrested and curious about Glavenus who I never really thought much of before, really fascinating. Also your cackle at the Frontier joke was 10/10 hahaha
I'd question the logistic of a giant well-armed predator needing a 1,000-degree knife for a tail, but with how satisfying it is to watch mixed with it reminding me of the Disney Dinosaur super carnotaurus I really like this monster.
I......would say it's to cut open armored prey since it clearly adapted to hot regions, and those kinds of regions have a lot of armored competition and prey, but then in World we see Glavenus' jaw with its psuedo fangs(the blue ones built into his face) clearly damage a creature like Diablos😅
@@redragon8551the question then is why, glav uses the tail as space pushing tool because its fire isn’t too strong and is for deterrent. It is possible that the tail is repurpose from balance to let glav better defend itself from other wyverns and to keep more dangerous prey like gravious or uragaan away from its face until the kill then the tail may be used for butchering after all it is a sign of health as well so maybe
@@redragon8551 compared to a rathian that is probably not enough especially since rathian also has strong fire. Plus again, the point is pain inflicting and with some monsters it will not be enough to deter them. Many monsters have shown resistance to fire in general so of course glav needs to up the game but the fire is also important for the tail and is regurgitating their meals so it is also costly to keep using the fire blasts.
Good to know you like one of my favourite monsters in the series! Love how nicely the practical explanations for Glavenus tails in their reproductive cycles.
I really like everything about Glavenus. I admit taht im Biased towards Brute Wyverns in general though. As a greatsword main, it felt like having a proper greatsword duel in GU.
The blue of the tail could be attributed to either the mineral gathered or the heat generated when gathering metals. Iron takes a blue to plum colour when exposed to certain heats for enough time so this could be a result of the heat generated by the scraping. Then theres the mineral. Vivianite is a crystalline iron mineral that - interestingly enough - can coalesce on remains of dead animals that have been buried for long periods, namely the bones that fossilize. The irony here being that acidic Glavenus would likely have a better justification for being blue than classic Glavenus. The blue of the tail could also speak to the tail being tempered or annealed for resilience or hardened damage. I imagine too much hardness would result in damage to internal structures like the vertebrae, so resilience would probably be more likely.
Could Glavenus raised in different areas with different kinds of monster interactions develop different fighting styles? Like how acidic glavenus has more of a longsword moveset with thrusts and swift slashes rather than base glave’s wide lunges and chops. Glavenus bulls fighting each other might look like a HEMA match with two animals. Just a thought
Alright, Ive been watching these Wyvern Ecology videos for some time now, and I gotta say, being a massive Monster Hunter fan and a biology major, watching these videos just makes me happy. Of course I know its pseudoscience and theres not *that* much information to scrunch together, but I love them nontheless. I just wanted to say thanks for making these videos, keep doing your thing, and I wish you the very best :)
The part about how the weird spiky protrusion on Glavenus is an organ to regulate heat opens up so many new avenues for grounded creature design. Need a way to spice up a monster? Just add spikes. If anyone asks why, the monster lives in very hot/cold areas and evolved the organ to chill/sunbathe.
While Monster Hunter Stories is definitely dubiously canonical at best, often contradicting with main series games especially in terms of specific biological and ecological aspects, I do have to wonder if Glavenus actually make ideal Rider companions. Being quick to hatch, reasonably intelligent, and more importantly, having a significant stage of learning behavior from their mother, they may well imprint onto humans if hatched under a Rider's care and could be trained much more easily than certain other species. They certainly wouldn't be easy to care for, but with their brute strength making them potentially ideal as beasts of burden and their tendency to dig up good mineral deposits, they could provide significant benefit to anyone brave enough to rear one.
A bit late to the party but couldn't Glavenus back spines also be used for defense/dissuasion against Rathalos talon attacks? They share some of the same habitat and it would be a way to lower predation on rathian's youngs.
Man my favorite videos of yours are the ones that take the monsters that would seem over the top and edgy for edginess sake, and makes them seem like plausible creatures with real behaviors and patterns that all living creatures have. First it was Nargacuga, then Val Hazaak, and now we can add Glavenus to that list!
My favorite monster, nice to someone else reaching some of my conjectures about it and then some. Liked the video so yeah. I'm on the camp that World has the inferior version, both in theme and fight, it feels less like a duel, which is important since it was framed as an armed combatant. While the other fated four were paired with a previous flagship in the OP and artwork, Glavenus was paired with the hunter(s), the main hunter was also wielding a hammer which shares traits with the greatsword but is a blunt weapon instead. This is I feel where the theme works too: it fits as a duel/gladiator fight, a match for the monster with a weapon for body part.
keep in mind how easy it is to make Thermite and that rust is an integral part in making it, it makes sense that it would store waste products, then it can just vomit up the waste with the other minerals needed for Thermite (in powdered form) and ignite it heat and BAM!!! you got one of the scariest thermal reactions out there, explains how it can get the blade red hot too.
I don't know why, but the sponsor transition was the funniest thing I've seen, I was expecting an explanation about how Glavenus sleep affects him only to be told the benefits of Manta sleep
I think a pretty simple thing to note is acidic glavnous' seemingly more dexterouse tale and its more precise use, able to position its point in front of its head and turn the blade a lot faster. I imagine these feats are capable because of the lack of smelting that comes when acidic glavanouse sharpins its tale makes it a lot less rigid.
I may be a minority opinion, or I may not, but my favorite part of any of these videos is whenever you use monster biology as a springboard to talk about real-world animals. There's just something magical about the way you effortlessly segue into actual science before weaving back into the fictional overviews.
On Glavenus' theme: In x and XX his theme is very hectic and lacks most emotion, painting him as an emotionless monster that is only there to kill, something the game very much intended. In World his theme became much more adventurous, with a small reference to the Bherna theme, alluding to the Saphire Star knowing about the stories but not fearing Glavenus and understanding it more. And the theme itself fits rather nicely to his tail slamming fighting style. The attack notes especially in the World rendition sound like Glavenus' tail is the one causing those heavy hits in the music, something most people seem to overlook.
I can't verify the sources since they're in Japanese, but BannedLagiacrus has a thread explaining what the deal is with hellblade glavenus. There are 2 particular details that I think are worth mentioning: 1. Becoming a deviant starts with a glavenus constantly sharpening its tail, which causes it to consume more mineral content than usual and gets debris in its eyes. 2. The extra mineral content raises its body temperature, making it look red due to the constant need to thermoregulate. The part about frequent resharpening stands out to me, and reminds me about how some animals will excessively overgroom themselves as a result of heavy stress. My theory is that hellblades are individuals that started compulsively sharpening as a response to stressors such as disease or inability to find a mate (or perhaps a combination of multiple factors, since deviants are supposed to be rare). In addition to their feverishly high body temperatures, materials constantly leak from their bursas whenever they open their mouths, which feel like signs that hellblades are sick individuals, whose changes in behaviour only make their conditions worse. My headcanon is that hellblade glavenuses have considerably shortened lifespans, and are likely to perish soon even without guild intervention. The reason why they are hunted may just be a precautionary measure, since MHGU quest descriptions confirm that even ordinary glavenuses will occasionally attack human settlements. With their instability and even worse temperaments, hellblades may be more likely to cause unnecessary conflicts due to built up frustration.
Honestly i think Glavenus hits a sweet spot for me. They have a good reason for having so much exaggerated features being fantastic but realistic, a good fight, and a very good amount to be speculated
A small theory of mine ive been cooking up would be the idea of A mating pair sharpening their partners tails as a form of mutual grooming. Glavenus’ intelligence rarely get to thrive outside of combat, and i think a behaviour like that would be an interesting form of affection or a way for the female to see the bull as a suitable mate or a mother sharpening their offsprings tail for them in case the young glavenus’ jaws havent hardened from maturity or ore foraging yet.
Ayyy my favorite monster (tied with Narga)! This should be a fun watch. His design is cool without being immersion breakingly stupid (a sharp tail isn’t even that over the top for MH verse standards) and he’s part carno so he gains points in my book
The reason Glavenus' tail feels like it takes so long to break is because while you can damage it whenever, you can only break it when it's actually red hot which really doesn't help with how high up it is 😂
I never knew that! It explains so much!

@@johncronk8867 A monster that lets you go if you drop your weapon is an amazing concept.
@@DreamerOfTheSouthIt's only a myth because we don't let them
Several things:
1.)When you were talking about the toxic compounds that Glavenus deal with in their volcanic environments, it made me wonder if it recycles then into its tail to give it its incendiary properties, similar to a match head.
Maybe it eats ore eaters for the ore in their bodies
Actually, it's Canon that at least in the 4th gen, Glavenus,Uragaan, and Gravios fight each other for ores! I don't know about Teostra though
point 1 would also explain acidic glavenus pretty well, i think
I really appreciate how smart Glavenus is shown to be. Instead of another big, dumb brute, it really seems like each individual puts a lot of thought into each decision.
It’s a “Brute” by classification, not nature. Just shows the troubles with taxonomy…like Ukanlos being a “Flying” Wyvern

I like to imagine that Glavenus hatchlings ride on the mother's backs in that big gap between the spikes while they’re small.
I like how the concept art makes the tail of Glavenus look like an actuial glaive as opposed to a sword, though I worry if they turned it into an actual monster, they would try to give it parallels to the Insect Glaive like normal Glavenus has to the Great Sword.

I second this! A little intermission in weird megabeasts to look at weird minibeasts

Acidic has definitely gotta be the best MH subspecies (alongside Tigerstripe Zam)
@@lonradbwhen can we get our bouncing frogshark back? 😢
Abelisaurs are very underrated dinosaurs. Great video as usual!
Glad for that honestly getting tired of Rex's and rex stans also hope someday we get a brute wave based on spinosaurus or baryonyx
Fun fact, Larinoths are in lore extremely dangerous towards predators and can crush/heavily wound subadult and juvenile glavenus
Glavenus is the Izuchidrome lol
With Glavenus and Goss Harag, I wonder if viewing swords through the lens of phallic imagery might help us understand their evolution. Aside from being used in a fight, a blade might be used as an actual display of a bull's sexual prowess and abilities. The bigger the sword the bigger the, well y'know. This has the benefit of being used for combat, but might deter combat between species members. Glavenus bulls don't need to fight, they just need to flash their swords to one another and they can immediately see who has the bigger sword with more reach and a healthier blade.
I love glavenus, they are one of my favorites and I am really glad you made this to give more info on this awesome animal.
SUPER NICE,
Glavenus really brings out my inner child, thinking it's cool just by looks alone

I hope Nergigante gets a video one day. Favorite monster in the franchise, and love riding him in Monster Hunter Stories 2.
The 1000 degree knife T. rex was always one of my favorite monsters and a cool fight back in World. Glad you covered him!
Love Glavenus, not my favorite Monster or even my favorite fated four member but he's definitely a cut above many other monsters
Guessing Mizu is your favourite of the fated 4?
@@bri1085 Astalos though Mizu isn't far behind and has the better fight and theme
I think that, if they were to make more Glavenus subspecies, it would be pretty interesting if they made them with different bladed weapons as their tails, like a thin, long rapier-like tail with rapid thrusts, or a large, chunky axe tail that moves slower but hits significantly harder.
Heinously underrated creator, you can tell the time he puts into these vids. Keep em coming!
17:49
With this reference to culture in the animal kingdom...
@@GunlessSnake malzeno and magnamalo uses its tails as kind of stinger to its prey. Not as slasher
Problem there: Kushala molts in high and cold regions, while Glavenus is a more low land and hot climate animal
Frankly I would think it would predate upon kushala much like Rajang with Kirin

Well as stated in the video. It’s a product of sexual selection first and a weapon second.
@victory8928 dude, watch a clip of a Glavenus in mhgu shooting a fireball and watch it blow up and then tell me his fire isn't strong
@@redragon8551 compared to a rathian that is probably not enough especially since rathian also has strong fire. Plus again, the point is pain inflicting and with some monsters it will not be enough to deter them. Many monsters have shown resistance to fire in general so of course glav needs to up the game but the fire is also important for the tail and is regurgitating their meals so it is also costly to keep using the fire blasts.
that ad transition was top tier!
Good to know you like one of my favourite monsters in the series! Love how nicely the practical explanations for Glavenus tails in their reproductive cycles.
Okay, the segue into the sleep mask add was pretty clever. Got a chuckle out of me.
I really like everything about Glavenus. I admit taht im Biased towards Brute Wyverns in general though. As a greatsword main, it felt like having a proper greatsword duel in GU.
The thing with how long the tail takes to break/cut is due to the fact that, in-game, it only is dealt damage when heated (or cleaned for Acidic).
Interesting stuff, will have a think on it for the debrief - cheers!

Could Glavenus raised in different areas with different kinds of monster interactions develop different fighting styles? The part about how the weird spiky protrusion on Glavenus is an organ to regulate heat opens up so many new avenues for grounded creature design. Need a way to spice up a monster? Just add spikes. If anyone asks why, the monster lives in very hot/cold areas and evolved the organ to chill/sunbathe.
The spines cooling the Glavenus is quite the unexoected treat, and both species using the "fuller" to drain toxins is highly unexpected
WOHOO!!!!! AWESOME (unintentional) BIRTHDAY GIFT THAT YOU BIG MAN!!!!!
That transition into the sleep mask add actually caught me off guard.
Only one of the Fated Four left, saved the best for last!…(or least popular for last😂)

I'm always glad to see your videos
The slower reproduction cycle would also make sense so that ore deposits wouldn't get overtaxed
Pog UHC video AND a sponsorship? Lovely
1:36 your "what is the deal with ..." is on point , you could have a future in stand up comedy
The attack notes especially in the World rendition sound like Glavenus' tail is the one causing those heavy hits in the music, something most people seem to overlook.
ooooh, I have been waiting for this for a loooong time now. so worth it
I never thought I would learn so much from a MH channel.
Once I find a job, I'm gonna stuff money into the Patreon
I can't verify the sources since they're in Japanese, but BannedLagiacrus has a thread explaining what the deal is with hellblade glavenus. There are 2 particular details that I think are worth mentioning:
It is very rare that we can hear UHC making noises resembling laughter
Honestly i think Glavenus hits a sweet spot for me. They have a good reason for having so much exaggerated features being fantastic but realistic, a good fight, and a very good amount to be speculated
You may joke about that blue tooth mask, but um I have a "soothing voice" playlist and you're in it.
Your wheeze at 31:59 just absolutely kills me. Abiorog-who, indeed. 😂
