  • Everyone knows Seltas needs to be careful when around his queen for fear of getting eaten. But what are the secrets behind such behaviours, among other things the duo are seen to do in game too?

An interesting idea would be that the Queen killing the male and throwing it at the hunter is a form of "autotomy". A predator might stop harassing the queen and eat the already avaliable Seltas, while the Queen just runs away. Unlike a lizard tail thought, loosing the male doesn't impact negativelly the queen survival, and she might as well find another one the next couple of days.

    • @GrimReaver

The Seltas horn comparison image made me realize that both Seltas subspecies have three horns. In regular Seltas, the central horn grows large with the two side horns remaining small, whereas in Desert Seltas, the side horns grow large with the central horn remaining small.

Seltas Queen has always been one of my favorite monsters. Not enough to dislodge Lagiacrus as my #1, but Seltas Queen is basically competing with Odogaron for second place. The fight always felt like how I imagine a trying to fight a tank on foot would be like; yeah, there's weak points, but it's actively trying to avoid you hitting those weak points, there's a crewman causing extra problems for you, and if it closes to optimal range you're screwed. The animations and just being such a damn unique concept helps a lot.

Props to Seltas and Seltas Queen for having one of the best variants. Not only is it a fitting palette change for the new environment but it's not only just a colour swap/slight texture change to fit a new element, it's a much more interesting morphological change, it's enough to feel like a proper variant and not too much as to revamp too much of the design.

    • @TornaitSuperBird
      @TornaitSuperBird Год назад +6

The funny thing is that Desert Seltas and Queen are classified as a *subspecies*! Granted, it shares similarities to Shrouded Nerscylla in terms of design ethos, looking and acting more like a variant. But I think that's more sue to the Neopterons and Temnocerans being built different.
Heck, even Pyre Rakna-Kadaki had slight variations to the model, most notably being the larger horns on the head.

P.S. Monsterification of real-world inverts has an insane amount of potential and creativity. Stomatopods are genuinely just an irl MH monster. An amblypigid would be wonderful. A neopteron centipede could use najaralas skeleton, but would need heavy animation additions, alterations and replacements. Giant stick insects or mantids, honestly the possibilities for new buggy monsters is endless.

I really loves somebody notice the Seltas uniqueness.
Not only is from a quite rare monster category, even their fight is fundamental distinctive from any other, because it's the only dual-type boss in the main series, as well it opens the possibility for more monsters with greater sexual dimorphism, which grant them with different abillities and fighting styles.
Rathalos and Rathian are fine, but they could be different species and nobody would notice or care the difference, but Seltas are inconfundible because they always are together.

  • @JanusHoW

I actually witnessed Seltas Queen cannibalism in Generations Ultimate. One of the game's final Prowler quests is to hunt a male Seltas...but the catch is that it's following a female. Trying to separate the two with Dung Bombs is nearly impossible, as the male quickly follows his queen whenever she moves to another zone. The best way to do it is to drain the Queen's stamina through a combination of blunt attacks and just making her attack. Once she starts drooling, she'll instantly slay her mate, essentially doing the work for you!

It would be really cool if seltas queen actually had a hive domain with a 'toolbox' suite of different seltas that she can manipulate and augment her body with- like if she had a "trapdoor headed seltas" nearby she could flush it with pheromones and have it tightly grip her forearm so she could have a shield, or a specialized worker with huge mandibles so she could have an augmented claw or extra set of pedipalps for processing excessively large prey items. There's a lot you can do with that concept though that could make her really exciting if they expand and explore her kit in the future.

So many more casual people describe MH has 'hunting dinosaurs and dragons,' so having more of these more unconventional monsters can really help just buff up variety as well as fill in more niches from an ecological standpoint.

It's one of the few Monsters that has a specific evolutionary relationship with an Elder Dragon species, and a very unique one at that given how the adult Rajang we encounter by necessity needed to have hunted at least one Kirin in their lives to attain the catalyst for their strength-enhancing electricity generation.
It's also kinda funny to me that, despite appearances, they actually evolved nearly fireproof skin and fur, likely a consequence of them needing to be ale to survive the intense lightning that Kirin can call forth.

Best channel in existence, also sorry for not thinking of this for the map video but I have an idea for an endgame map area:
    Heavenly Sanctuary:
A mountain range that borders a coastline that is almost always under rainfall due to being constantly hit by storms. In this region lies a flying algae equivalent which are fed on by multiple species of small flying wyverns who are adapted to eat them, but are in turn themselves prey for the true rulers of this ecosystem. Due to the constant food and water the place serves as a breeding ground for multiple flying elder dragons. Within the insides of the mountains are half sunken caverns that bring shelter to mating ibushi and narwa and their young. The drenched mountainside has many water pools and waterfalls which are formed by the constant rainfall, and may be used by amatsu for both nourishment and as a breeding ground if we assume that the wind membrane for their young aren’t developed enough to fly and restricts them to living an aquatic lifestyle. At the top of the mountain peaks would be areas which provide amazing nest for valstrax who may nest their in grand flocks like seabirds every decade or so. The area sends a feeling of peace and chaos to the player as in this region they are intertwined. The area gives off a sense of peace due to it being used as nesting grounds for these elder dragons. Maybe their could be a tunnel that is out of reach from the player that sometimes shows a narwa and her young flying by the tunnel. Maybe their could be a distant water pool that is inaccessible by the player that sometimes has an amatsu who guards over it, and occasionally you can see a young amatsu attempt to fly but fall back in. Maybe near the top you can see a colony of valstrax nesting along the mountain range and if you’re lucky you can catch a glimpse of a valstrax chick poking his head out of the nest before the parent pushes him back in. At the same time as this the area still gives a feeling of chaos due to it being a breeding ground for multiple elder dragon species who all guard their nest fiercely with monsters regularly patrolling their side of the map. Ibushis and narwas patrolling the sunken caves, amatsu patrolling the drenched mountainside, and valstrax patrolling the mountain peaks, with battles being common between the different species. I think that this map would be a really great map due to it fleshing out the ecology of these elder dragons and also providing a basis for including more flying elder dragons for this high altitude evosystem, and at it would be cool if water combat was reintroduced and ibushi and narwa could take their fight into the depths of the sunken caves and amatsu could swim into the deepest water pools for its fight.

Would be interesting to see a dragonfly monster as pretending to be an elder dragon to scare off predators it can be the fake elder dragon. Much like a certain caterpillar that it's rear end resembles a snakes head.

The seltas pair is one of my favorite monsters. The fight is fun and chaotic, the part breaks on queen are cathartic, and you can hunt multiple seltas at the same time.
Not to mention the cool weapon and armor aesthetics.

It always has bothered me that this fantastical world filled with a incredible vast amount of creatures, that we only have a handful of actual giant insects to fight and hunt. Surely this world should be brimming with these wonderful creepy crawlers just as much as all the wyverns. I dream for the day we get to hunt a giant centipede, beetles, dragonflys, or even moths and butterflies or wasps. They have so much potential to be wonderful additions as both great fights and ecological intrests.

Curious on how this ties to Narwa and Ibushi as a species, they're far removed from anything in real life but they have some interesting real world ties, like the sexual dimorphism between the two along with the aformentioned cannibalism, however they also pull elements from more aquatic animals with their Air sacs and their general movement as if they are underwater, and Narwas egg sac could be were the ideas converge, between insects and fish. Of course it could be chalked up to them being elders but even among other elders they share few similarities aside from Yama Tsukami and Amatsu.

I also find it interesting that after eating Ibushi, Narwa herself augments into the Allmother, reminds of how the Angler fish absorbs the male itself into her body to generate sperm and fertilize eggs, Perhaps Narwa the allmother is able to continue to fertilize eggs on her own.

Another fantastic video, I adore the Seltas pair and REALLY hope they return in MH6, so much potential for them with environmental and monster interactions that were not possible in 4th gen. One question I've had is how does predation work at the scale of Seltas Queen and the spiders alongside monsters of similar size? You've mentioned the interaction among neopterans, carapaceons, and temnocerans, but with the exception of said buggy monsters hunting smaller, fleshy prey, what sort of interactions do you imagine at the opposite end of the spectrum? Which monsters in their respective environments would view them as prey or rivals for territory/resources?

Hey man, short time but already greatly invested viewer, wonderful work and admirable effort put into these videos. A suggestion that would make the viewer experience more enjoayble in my opinion would be to roughly match the text in the background with the current voiceover, because at times I have to stop the video, read the insert, go back 10 to 20 seconds to focus on the current topic and start from there again. I would appreciate a video on dahren-mohran and more generally titan size monsters. I`ll be catching up with your other videos in the meantime!

By the way, you mentioned the Swamp map near the end of the video, and it reminded me of a question I had following you last Q&A. You've brought up how good monsters need to be designed for their maps, and the swamp has no native "apex." So if you were to design a monster tailored for the swamp to be at the top of the proverbial food chain or threat level for the Swamp, what would it be like? What would you draw inspiration from?

Also would love to see how the use of other monster parts to be used as weapons compares to the real world.
