- When it comes to India, there appears to be this stereotype in the West that all Indians are engineers, and the fact that yet another Indian engineer was recently appointed as the CEO of Twitter doesn’t exactly help break the stereotype. Our Asian Boss reporter Aqsa hit the streets of Mumbai to find how ordinary Indians feel about the stereotype.

According to Indian parents,there are only three job options:
1. Doctor/Engineer
2. Civil/govt. Service
3. Teachers.
Edit: some people talking about my third choice like it's not relevant. I was a science student and later in grad, I changed my stream and choose arts, hence for my mother, it's either I apply for UPSC or be a teacher. In the end, it's just always Teacher and UPSC option for Arts students.
4. A disgrace to your family
In my family option are Doctor, Engineer, and MBA.
Students in India are not allowed to do what they want.

Not all indians are engineers, but mind you, there are lots of indian engineers are finding it hard looking for a job. two key reasons I think are communication and cultural differences.
I guess it depends on the type of engineering. Most game dev jobs and embedded systems jobs are outsourced. It’s a walk in the park getting those as an Indian right now.

I am civil engineer and not all of my classmates were Indian. About 1/3 of my university (University of Arizona Tucson, AZ) classmates were Indian and the rest were Americans and Africans (mainly from Zambia and Zimbabwe). Almost all my Engineer Professors were Indian.
And wtf are those? Both Africa and America are diverse. This makes no sense.
We Indians do engineering in our own country later we go to places like US, Germany in search of Jobs. So, It's obvious that you don't find any Indians in your class.

I feel really lucky as an Indian to have parents who never forced me to per-sue some particular field of study. Though i still went for engineering.

Especially in programming, Indians youtube video tutorials helped so many aspiring programmers reach where they are today. They're indeed superb in teaching programming languages that are making the courses of IT, CompSci, and CompEng made it look so easy when in fact, it will never be easy to be in the tech industry. Saying this because those videos helped me a lot as a graduate of CompSci in the Philippines.

Not everyone is engineer but the pressure to become one is. I remember that when I got a seat for Geology, everyone were pressuring me to go for Engineering even though I didn't want to be. But later on, they eventually agreed with my decision. And in India, two things are considered always first - either Engineering or Doctor and if either of them aren't considered then there will be always pressure from either parents or from relatives or from the neighbours. And because of pressure some take these courses and later on couldn't do well and some may even take their life. And answer to this is more complex but this is just a small part of what I said. Hope this helps.
Hey, this kind of gave me a little solace of sort. I recently took microbiology and my parents and relatives hate it. I attended a wedding last month and more than the bride they were focused on telling me how I should prepare for NEET and that microbiology is a difficult field to establish your career in (Ironical). So yeah even STEM related careers are not acceptable. I hope you achieve great highs. All the best.

I am a Nepali and I was surprised to see all Indian professor in Engineering and computer science department and that too in the middle of USA, Kansas when I landed here. Almost all professors were Indian in middle of Kansas. Can you Imagine that?!

I love that all of them are so well spoken and have knowledge on what they're asked about. Usually when Indians are interviewed in the streets, they come across as smart and aware of their surrounding. I think that's an awesome thing.
Any kind of stereotypes are not good. Over 500 millions Indian are not even have high school finished. Do all Indian eat chicken curry? Answer is No. over 400 millions Indian people are vegetarian and over 300 millions Indian people don’t eat any kind of curry. I wish if governments plan since 1990s engineering or doctors will stay in India 🇮🇳 now . If u go check to Google China 🇨🇳 is the largest produced engineering but Chinese engineering stays in China because Chinese communist creates the jobs and development. Now India 🇮🇳 government is just watching and loosing every thing including money 💰 that’s why still developing country. Yes, the information is true but the figures you mentioned are not accurate...
There are 300m illiterate people in India and approximately 150-200 m went to primary schools, this information includes people of age 50+ and above too ... But how do you calculate illiteracy? People may be illiterate according to survey or analysis but the same people are literate enough to communicate with each other, they have the knowledge and know basics of their mother tongue, they have manners, raw talent and importantly ability to think wisely...in a way they are educated enough to choose their profession..
And coming to vegetarians, the figures differs between 480-550m considering the overall population, among which 40% are pure Vegetarian..
"300m people don't eat any kind of curry"? What does that mean? What's curry actually?
Well, about government I'm not sure they can bring back Indians from western countries but they are trying hard to keep youth from going abroad..

@@sanjana6873 Chinese people are not more hardworking than we are. I don't understand why " hardworking" is given as the answer to every question in India. The system in China is much better. Period. In India the politicians ( irrespective of political party) prefer to increase the gap between the rich and the poor because it suits their interests. So anything that takes Indians close to employment are worshipped. Schools, colleges, engineering, medicine etc. All these are worshipped. Obviously some people don't have the intelligence to pursue these professions. This is where the whole " hardwork is everything" dialogues originated. The system is trash and no one recognises it. It's messed up and won't get any better. Atleast the people in power won't allow it and people don't seem to realise it.
the main problem is that Indian education system , the academic pressure & the society's mentality is a big reason why there is a huge lack of entrepreneurs in India
Parents pressure is also because in India we don't have much options , initially it is increasing but back in days we didn't have much even our parents were not os qualified still they wanted to give their children a better life than theirs .so it would be injustice for the parents also who sacrifice a lot for their children.
No one want to pressurize their child if they are assure that every field have good opportunities then they won't. (Exceptions are everywhere like a few parents force their dreams onto the child even his child's dream has a good future as well as the child has talent ) .
So it's upon us and govt. To channelise the population into different field and create different jobs in diff. Sectors.

That is changing fast. We have 47 unicons companies in India in the last year alone.Btw our school education system is very good
Beuracracy is the main problem because of which we lack infrastructure and cultural exchange like USA and education system follows up.
It's good for America but bad for India. Every year a certain number of Indians seek an education at American universities and upon graduation, many are recruited by the government and US multination companies with hefty salaries and lucrative positions to stay and work in the US. So instead of going back to India to make the country better, India loses some of it's brightest minds.
Look at it from their perspective why would you want to go back to live in extreme poverty doing it there when you can stay and be rich by India’s standards making 80k-120k a year. Engineering is hard work. They should prosper and be in health.
Each year thousand of smart,well educated indian leaving the country and working in foreign company or study abroad,india gov dont see talented ppl is priority to developing country

Mostly People who have been living in slums for years, continue living their. Everyone who comes to America from India isn't pulled out of "extreme poverty" and isn't from the slums. And if they go back, they won't be living in in slums ever. Were as, living in America, will make their lives so much harder because of the increased gun violence, costly Healthcare , and if they have kids, schools aren't even safe because of school shootings and the American teenage in general. That's why in the last 5 years, there has been a massive return of Indian students from america and the startup culture has grown exponentially by them in india. And now many go to america just for studying and then come back to india. They will be better treated, get priority because they've studied in an American university, and overall will have a much better life here. So yeah, all of these people you see right here migrated to america 10 15 years ago. The situation has changed a lot now.
It's not actually bad for india. For example, as soon as he became the Twitter CEO, he banned many Chinese bot accounts and verified accounts who spreaded propaganda against india on Twitter. And all other indian CEOs of various companies have taken such steps. They also increase their investment in india because they know the potential here. So yeah, it's soft power over a country like america which is always good. America knows that a lot of its highly educated citizens are of Indian origin, and so it always avoids harsh steps against india no matter whatever it does. For example, america couldn't sanction india for buying s400 because they knew it would have some serious consequences.
My parents,grand parents, uncle's, aunt's forced me to pursue engineering. I ended up being an engineer. I wanted to pursue BA in psychology and be a Psychologist or a councellor. I'm working in a top MNC in India since 2019. It's difficult to take leaves, mental health has worsened since 2020. Job pressure on other hand. Unnecessary client escalations even during Christmas week or any other holidays. The offer from company was (Master's + job) so parents were so happy and excited that I'll be doin Mtech so here iam pursuing Mtech. They feel proud when they talk about me with other relatives. But I'm ashamed of myself, why didn't I stood up for myself? Why I'm doing something that I don't wanna do. I'm totally lost in life. Not interested in anything now. There are suicidal thoughts everyday. I'm explaining my parents and family everyday that I cannot continue this but they don't understand me.

I am in a similar situation....I just want to tell you that its something which many of us have been going through because of unrealistic expectations of society and some stupid standards set by society....what we have been going through,at least we won't be forcing the next generation to go through the same thing....every society has different stages of progress ....we will have to become the change....this phase too will pass.....I am going through a similar phase but I want to be economically independent once so that I can fulfill the small dreams I have for myself....I recommend you to do that too....empower yourself financially for now and then introspect on what you would like to do in your life.....you can have very big dreams or small wishes you want to fulfill....that doesn't matter so far as you want to really do it! And don't lose hope.....Everything will be fine! Also, looking at your profile picture, you seem to be a k-pop fan. I too am an ARMY! They are my source of happiness when things get rough! Closed minded parents and relatives are such a difficultly :( But it’s not too late to turn around and change your life to make it better.
There’s this expectation that we’re told from a young age that we’re supposed to be in successful, meaning that we know what we want in life and have a stable life, by our early-mid 20s. But that’s absolutely not true at all. At the end of the day, no matter how much our parents and relations deny this, this life is your life, and only yours to live. Only you can feel the happiness of what you want to do in life. You deserve to be happy, and not someone else’s pride. And if the people in our life can’t accept that, then that’s unfortunately out of our control. What makes them happy is not always the same as what makes us happy. So go after what you want, and try while you still can!

Move out of the house and Live on your own bro, you’re already working. Then don’t talk about your career shift (if you’ll ever do it). Just surprise them once you’re on your chosen career path for some years. They can’t do anything about it once you’re there on your preferred career. They might even don’t care anymore if they see that you’re living comfortably already. They would look like an idiot if they still pressured you to go back to engineering.
It’s just up to them if they’ll cut you out because of what you did. And if they did cut you out, then it’s just shows that they don’t care about you and you’re just a trophy that they can show off to their friends and relatives. And those friends and relative’s opinions is much more important than yours which is so so stupid.
It's easier said than done, though I want you to know that whatever you want to do in your life atleast go for it once, because in the end there shouldn't be any regrets, If you can't achieve it, that's okay too because atleast you tried.
Indian parents are like that only, but eventually everything comes to peace, once you are at peace with things.
And it's a phase, it too shall pass.

I am a teacher for foreigners in Germany and I have noticed that there is a huge increase in enrolments by Indian nationals here (backed by statistics that I have recently attained). We have a big department for Computer Science, which is usually their preferred subject. They start coming here at a very young age already.

This "Do your best or else you are doom/ brought shame to your family" mentality needs to die it's common not only in India but in Asia as a whole. I hate it when parents force their children to pursue a career they want whether the children love it or not. I hope the next generation will kill this toxic mentality.

Indians have yet to emancipate themselves from expectations of their family and social pressure. I am sure a lot of them could excel at anything.
You know that's the absolute truth. We just can't because our family matters us a hell lot because of our culture and this kills our dreams
It's because you cannot survive independently right after school in India, especially without the support of parents.
There is extremely high competition for college admissions here, so kids prepare with additional private tuitions from highschool itself. The parents pay for those tuitions and they will not pay to get special tuitions to enter a college discipline they don't agree with. That's the problem

You are right, but students aren't let out of the unbranching paths that they are put in, which makes everything hard for them.
I think those Indians who are unable to get into IIT, NITs or any other reputed institute in India, should try for global colleges in UK US and Australia. If ur pocket supports it then go for it, if it falls short try for economic aid programme. Never give up on ur dream. Never compromise for something else
I highly doubt most people who go to these universities have dreams of academia. Dreams set us free and make us realise our highest human potential irrespective of society. We apply to these institutions out of societal pressure - in short - they're adopted dreams.

during industrialization movement in India, engineers were needed more than ever. engineers were so respected that this hype is still carried till now. i don't think it's trendy now but doens't mean it a bad course to take. I've brainwashed to take engineering or not to take software field by some, because the job atmosphere is not suitable for comfortable job life. but irony is, all famous actors/ entrepreneur show their qualification as engineering in their insta bios or on their new articles

66 years is a long life? That seems to be the average life expectancy in India (which is slightly skewed by much higher infant mortality, child mortality and mother mortality), but it would be considered relatively young in developed countries...

There are so many engineers in India because they grew up to fulfill their parents wish. What they do later for living are diverse and shocking sometimes. Some are cab drivers, contractors, bank employees, electrician, small time businessman, or SI (Sub-inspector). Very few get job as engineers.

Engineers are so common in India sometimes makes me feel outsider.
There's only 1 Engineer in my closest cousins and he graduated in 2007 and doing really good, there are 3 Bcom who are doing business, 2 Bachelor of Pharmacy + MBA in Healthcare, a Chartered Accountant and 3 Bcom+MBA (includes me).
Even though the eldest was Engineer, it didn't motivated others because of his busy schedule.
I graduated mechanical engineering in Australia. There were a lot of Indians in my class and other engineering schools. Even some of the lecturers are Indians.
I'm now in IT industry where a lot of the engineers are expats from India, some of higher management (Asia and global levels) are Indians who used to be engineers as well.
So yeah, the stereotype is kind of true..

I feel so grateful that my parent's never pressured me into something that I don't want to do. they always support me and my choices. after passing 12th from science stream now I'm in 2nd year of interior design. for masters I'm thinking of studying abroad and my parents are supporting me for that too. i feel so sad and disappointed after hearing parent's pressured their kids into anything they don't want to do. let kids do what they love. 🙌🙌
I must say that without a doubt you are the most luckiest person in the 1.3 billion population that we have, that don't have to worry or didn't go through hell just inorder to please their parents and relatives desires.

Most of the Indians that I met had great work ethic and most importantly great empathy and social skills. I think that the social element is what makes them successful in the US, over people from other nations.
Not all Indians are Engineers. There are many doctors and MBAs too
By the way, I am an Engineer too.
One thing I want to say (that doesn’t add anything to the debate) is that I absolutely love the Indian accent whilst speaking the English language, and also watching Asian boss has opened my eyes to how forward thinking India actually is, it has gone from being a place I’d never wish to visit (due to premature misconceptions) to a place I’d love to visit!.

No I have done engineering from tier 3 college .. and I have seen lot of students of my college getting succeeded .. yeah in top colleges almost 90% gets success in tier 2 almost 70% gets success and tier 3 almost 40-50 % gets success .. it depends upon if you work hard and crack campus placement or even after that clear gate or CAT

The guy who said engineering to be most desired is living in past, there was time when its value was more but now it comes to 3rd position. Government services are 1st with no other field around, 2nd is doctor and 3rd is engineer(except you are from IIT as it would put engineer to 1st).
Actually nowdays in India no one care about engineer, the only things matter is college tag whether you are from IIT, NIT, BITS, or IIIT etc. It might make some people sad but this is what it is.

Well defenitely they do, but that was not the topic, the topic was how the society sees engineer compared to doctor and government employee. Ask this question to yourself. As an Indian pcm high school student, my parents have no pressure over me for doing engineering, in fact my father recommends me to pursue sketching/painting (which is my interest) or psychology or designing or any other field as he is an engineer and he knows it is a very stressful life and you can't live on your own terms, but then I don't feel secure in other fields, I am highly confused about my career

I have the freedom to choose my path but I am unsure and doubt each and every path that I choose. Once I felt like the most important thing is how I am viewed by the society hence I need to be superior than the rest(and maybe that's why I got the desire to become a doctor? idk) and these thoughts are enough to kill anyone's joy right? Well there's nothing such as "you are born to do this or that".
And also I have interests in so many things.

Fact: there are actually lot of engineering students in India but only some become engineers. Most engineering students I know pursue non technical govt jobs, banking and management. The good ones go abroad
The acceptance rate is wrong. 1,000,000 apply each year and 10,000 get through .That's 1% acceptance rate while in the video it was shown as 10%.Huge error.
What pains me is that I have to prepare for the 1% acceptance rate just because I was born into this country. In other countries it's far easier with 10% acceptance rates. Atleast it's possible in other countries and you don't have to sell your entire life and enjoyment to get into an Indian college

Couldn’t agree more with everyone on this video. Nicely put guys! I was fortunate enough that my parents let me take the path that I wanted to , and so surprisingly got the society offended. I took up commerce, did my BBA (yes a non science fellow here ) and then to top it all off, OPTED out of MBA (Imagine the bomb drops 😂) . Buuuttt, now i work with one of the fastest growing open source code tech company as a HR, with no regrets!

We all need COMPULSORY CAREER COUNCELLING, like man literally.

Indians are highly educated, much smarter than students here in US, UK,Canada etc...and they adopt perfectly to any culture(maybe because they come from a very diverse land)..so don't be suprised if you see lot of indians here in west at different positions and institutes because they literally thrive for better...so india is a devolping country with billion of population...so naturally when your population is educated and has less opportunities..they will move out looking for better opportunities..🙌

Never in my life my happy go lucky soul would have ever thought I would suffer depression. But i did. JEE took a very bad toll on me ,I will never forget it, experienced that dark phase. Funny thing is mental health awareness is so low among teens I myself didn't notice I went thru depression until after months I read my own diary and then it striked me,it was indeed depression:(

@@hemesh469 Mumbai has many Financial as well IT companies, it isn't a an ecosystem of big tech like the scene is in Bangalore and Hyderabad, you are more likely to find a person to be an engineer as compared to to Mumbai, but this is just my opinion ..... and the outcome also varies from the timing of the interview and the place of interview so not being super judgemental but just an observation

Not all people are engineers in India, the most common graduates are in B. COM ( Bachelors in Commerce), Population explosion is also another reason for large number of engineers

It's also depend on location where you're living in India, metropolitan cities like mumbai, Bengaluru, and etc are advanced in terms of tech and computer related fields or overall southern india. And if you see towards west part like Gujarat and Rajasthan are into business, coz of history and if you go to towards North like haryana is into sports and stuff and in North-west youth in Punjab is into NDA, immigrating to Canada (most favourable) or in farming. So at last I would say it's all about society, everyone is following one another. It's just my experience, no proof for this.
Adding to your statement if you are from West Bengal it is likely that you will be in academics n if from UP or Bihar main focus will be on civil services or government jobs.

In my area(Assam, Northeast India) there are 150 households and 170 engineers, 70 Doctors. Our parent's mindset is like Graduating in engineering is normal. My dad is an engineer and I have two engineering degrees, Civil and Mechanical.
Which is why I never did engineering. I too am from Assam.
The guy in the purple shirt was on the mark about the whole thing ! Plus in India the study methodology is working together on the problem and just doing what is told. Indian engineers are in demand because they will accept the salary offered. My Godson works for Boeing and has a Masters degree and he didn't sell himself short but he has an Indian colleague doing same job on H1B making less but that would be more than what he'd make on India if he had a job at all. Every India PM doesn't require that new grads should work for 2 years in the country but many know coming to America will net you something.

I'm lucky to have parents who gave me freedom to choose what career I wanted to pursue, I didn't have passion for any particular field so I took up engineering and I feel so relieved that I didn't make a wrong choice because I started to really enjoy and like the field, hope it stays that way when I start working tho
what i hate more about engineers is that they move their ass in every field like after completing their engineering they'll start preparation for UPSC CSE , Banks , Group D exams .. They will do everything except things related to engineering...

Just like many Indians, I had to breakup with physics to get married to engineering (it was arranged by my relatives). Really happy that there are students who are able to pursue their interests despite the pressure from parents and peers.

That girl said so many wrong points :
1. "She said we can't create jobs that the govt role", We can create jobs by startup, and that is happening.
2. "She said our institutions aren't well equipped that's y theres engineers unemployed", that isn't true, most of colleges are well equipped, but those 80% engineers who are unemployed, 50% just did engineering because of parents and peer pressure and hence didn't even pay attention to their course. Rest 30% are those who got jobs but lost due to unforseen circumstances, they will get a new one again.

What she said was right according to me start up is a risk which most Indians were not willing to take though it's changing but it's gonna take some time + The one's who want find easy job (most of them) are willing to settle abroad.
Our IITs and other educational institutions are good for UG courses not for PG or PhD

The Philippines has the same scenario: brain drain. Imagine if all our professionals did not leave, our countries would be even more developed. Sadly, the circumstances at home are not good, and we cannot blame them for leaving the country. If we want them to stay, we need to improve the system!
Also, as someone working in the humanities, I feel sad on how people and society only value STEM fields. We are invaluable members of the society too! A lot of people have asked me in the past why I chose linguistics over engineering. Two reasons: passion and competition. My passion is in languages and I know the competition is fierce in these in demand majors.
Lastly, Indians are one of the smartest people in the world, and not only in STEM. Bollywood, Indian music and art, these are amazing! Do you know that the first grammar ever written in the world was made by Pānini, an Indian linguist in the 4the century BCE, who is also labeled the "father of linguistics"? Sadly, Indians are still discriminated because of their skin color.
