For the straps on the front to the back. I put elastic in and sew it shut So it gets connected . When you put them on you step into the front to back loop, that way no bulky bow in the back and I feel more secure in it.
I just made these today. I'm a plus size girl, and the pattern she describes works just fine! Take those 3 measurements she explains, and the you have to add 5 inches to your waist measurement for the between-the-legs part, and a few inches all around for seam allowance. It was super easy and they look really cute!
Hi Reecca, where did you add the 5 inches? Would you have any pics that you could share, what they look like on a +size women? I'm 55 and a size 16 Aus and I want to make a pair of these for a Christmas function. Any help would be great.😃
@@sylvialove3953 did you figure out where she added the extra inches? Also, how is the waist measured? Is that the measurement across the top before it's folded in half to cut the crotch piece out?
@@lakshmikesari7867 Depends on the width and length of your fabric. :) I'm 42" waist and 52" hips, and 42" waist to floor. If I use extra wide cotton (for quilt backing), I can easily get away with one yard. If I'm using quilting cotton (~44 in across), I'll get 2 yards, or 2.5 if I want more of a palazzo style.
I'm always so curious about the dislikes. This is a very straight-forward, easy to understand tutorial about a garment that ACTUALLY LOOKS CUTE. So.... what's not to like???
This is the only video I've found for these style pants that actually explains how to take your measurements. All other ones just say "make this 5 inches and make this 30 inches" or whatever and I'm like "but I want more coverage! Idk how to do that." I'm not a seamstress but this seems easy enough! Thank you!
I just did a mock up with a goodwill flat sheet, and it turned out great! THe tie in the back gave me a weird bulge though, so I trimmed the straps and added three snaps. It is much smoother now! Thanks, ORly!
Thank you so much for posting this! A friend of mine showed me how to do this during an old bellydancing class, and I immediately wanted to try it. But I lost the napkin she gave me, and I've been looking for this pattern ever since. Finding this video, and your easy, fun instructions, is the culmination for years of searching! I can't wait to try it!
I did trousers like these a gazillion years ago and when that fabric tore a few 5-ish years ago I' said, and have been saying, that I need to make a new pair. After seeing this I really have no excuses left- I just need to get to it! However I would offer a tip. In mine I had two buttons (one over the other, not sideways) at the back and no ties, so I had the strap that I sew into the front of the trousers with the waits measurement + about 3 inches for overlap where the buttons went (and the button holes). I did have the tying straps sewn into the back (tying at the front) but I placed them off-center so I could tie a bow to one side and not have the ties fall down right at the front. I'm considering snap-buttons for this pair however. I do remember it being a bit fumbly when going to the bathroom. 😅 *Thanks for the reminder!* 💚✨
Omgosh both cuts and colours are spot on perfection! If you notice that I’m commenting after watching this video for the first time 2 years after Orly originally posted it, it’s a testament to her foresight and fashion forward creative genius. Orly, thank you for creating these videos and being the Bestest sewing teacher ever in the world. I love how you show every item needed, how you show every single step and explain in detail how and why. However I must admit that I agree with the majority of comments that it would be greatly beneficial to also show and explain how to achieve the same piece in larger or plus size…if possible. The current woman’s average size in clothing is 16-18 which is approximately a plus size 1-2X. Although this channel will forever be my favourite and watched frequently, if anyone knows of RUclips channel that shows very similar content but in larger sizes please let me know. ❤️ from Shannon in Canada 🇨🇦
Too funny!!! I made and wore these pants in late 70’s early 80’s. The only difference was I made the tie straps, one long piece that encased the pants also... making the waist band and ties all one piece. Thanks for bringing back great memories Orly. ❤️
Just one adjustment: for those of us with "more junk in the trunk," the "crotchal" measurement would not be divided in half. It needs to skew more to the back.
@@hazeleyes6061 So, how would we cut it? cuz we can't fold the leg in half and cut anymore. Do we split each leg piece in half - one with the front crotch size and the other with the back ?
I love these type of pants. Wore them all the time in the '70's and didn't realize they are popular again until just recently. Have looked lots of places to find affordable ones but, as I sew quite well, this is an even better solution. I think I will sew myself 4 or 5 pair this weekend. THANK YOU!
Yes! I’m on it. I cannot thank you enough. At age 13 my avant garde friend gifted me some sheer cotton pants exactly like this! I loved them. Now more than 30 years later, I can wear them and not get fussed at by my parents!! 😂💖
I bought a pair of these in New Orleans during Essence Festival. I love those pants, I have had them for around for over 18 years. I got them from an African boutique at the farmer market there. Now I don't have to wait for a trip there to find them, I can make my own. This tutorial was great. And your end result look goooood on you. This got to go into my RUclips files. Thanks for sharing and blessing to you in the days to come.
So glad to see these making a comback! Bought a pattern (Simplicity???) back in 1971 and did a really pretty version in a black and white print satin. Instead of ties in back, I suggest you do as the old pattern did and make sure to measure the front/under panel so that it crosses slightly in back and use a heavy coat style hook and eye to secure it so there is less bulk. You can vary the leg width to taste to show as much or little of your leg as you want. Having the back/top panel come all the way around to meet in front helps with more coverage too. For those of us who are not blessed with your gorgeous figure, shape the "u" cut to fit your actual profile and add darts (especially in back) if needed. Will be making a couple of these soon! Thanks, subscribed!
Oh the dart idea is great! Thank you so much, probably wouldn't have thought of it but I already know it's gonna be needed ^^ If you ever read this comment, what do you mean though by shaping the "u" to fit ones profile?
@@Karo-tb1ll I think she means that you don’t divide this measurement exactly by two but give the back a little more because your butt needs a little more room than the front 😊
I totally love this video. I'm an old lady and I feel I can do these pants. I'm going to do them in a lightweight linen for a wedding reception. Thank you so much!
I had a pair of pants like this that I picked up at a a street fair and they made me feel like a super sophisticated and chic world traveler. Though I'm not sure I'd take them on a trip since they add an extra level of challenge to sketchy bathroom situations.
I cant believe I'm just weeing this! I watch a ton of your vids too! I found the old pattern my Fly sister used back in 1978 to make these- made two pair for a fashion show last month. Everyone loved them! So cute!
I tried making these by following the video and learned a couple of things: 1) Use the waist measurement: The width of the fabric when folded in half needs to include your 1/2 waist measurement plus the 5" or so that you cut out for the crotch. 2)Account for a hem or the waistband when cutting the length: if you do it just like Orly does, add 1/2" for the doubled-over 1/4" hem and 11/4" for the waistband for a total addition of 1.75" to your length measurement. If you want a wider hem (I did, based on my material choice), be sure to add that. Sadly, I didn't realize any of this until it was too late and I'm either going to make these pants and give them to the Goodwill or toss the material and try again. Love the look and simplicity, though!
I simply added another color of the same fabric as a panel to makeup for the s/a and the 5 inches cut out of the u. Also, if you have a really wide hip to waist ratio, u may want to use your hip measurement to ensure that the pants wrap around your hips. When I did it initially, it wouldn't even close over my hips. When I added the panels. It did.
I’m binging on your videos! I have always felt so different from everyone else, almost misunderstood…because I just see things differently. Normal common stuff just bores me, I always want to change or use something a different way. You’re speaking my language and I’m so inspired! I’m 60 years old and I wish I would have known earlier that I’m not weird, I’m just creative!! You are adorable and I hope you make these videos forever! I can’t thank you enough for giving me the push to be comfortable in my own skin❤️

These pants are darling! I especially love the black ones (coverage + flowing drape), and that it almost looks like a skirt. Thanks for the detailed instruction and also showing the two styles, both of which look great on you.
I just discovered you, and lo and behold here you are making the pants that I was trying to find a pattern for I didn't know what to call them. My mom made them for me and her in the late '60s early '70s. she called them diaper pants! So happy to have this recipe (pattern)! Thanks! ❤

These are amazing! I use a wheelchair and have been looking for something that I could make that's a bit fancier than plain pants and that wasn't a skirt. I hadn't been having any luck with ones that would tick the right boxes but these look perfect! I'll have to give them a go :) So glad this showed up to me as a recommended video- I'll definitely be sticking around!
Excellent video, and one of the best that I have ever seen, to make these wrap pants. The instructions, and measurements are more personalized to each individual, instead of a one size, fits all. Some of us are shorter. Some of us are ‘larger’ to use a euphemism. Some of us want a fuller , wrap over. Thank you for being more concise, and precise. Very impressive. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Planning to make some of these for myself, and the universe (or at least the RUclips algorithm) put this video right in front of me - thank you for the simple and easy-to-follow instructions!
Well, they do say fashions come back around if you wait long enough. I made this exact same style in early 80s in shorts and knickers. I think my pattern could make pants, too, but I don't think I ever did those. I loved them!! One thing I did differently on some of them, esp if I had a wider strap, was to shorten the back strap so they just overlapped and then used either snaps or some sort of hook & eye fastener to save the bulk of the knot in the back so it was not so lumpy.
I made myself a pair of wrap and tie culottes from a pair of old T-shirts. I used one of the sleeves make a hidden pocket at the front waist. Folds neatly for packing. Perfect cover up for my swimsuit.
Suggestion: cut your U first, then measure for your waist and cut your sides. Your sides were skimpy because you cut the U out of your 21" waist measurement. :) I also have a pair like this from a street fair many many moons ago. I'd just like to say for big-bottomed women, you can make one side of the U a little deeper (look at pants patterns where the back is always longer). And thanks for this! What a fun, easy pattern!
You have hit the jackpot again!! Love these sooooooooo much. Orly, I was just thinking that so many have never used a sewing machine, they just never learned how. Sewing is a wonderful skill. Years ago, (OK now I am dating myself) Home Economics was a class everyone had to take in high school. I am so grateful now as I can pump out pretty much anything from my sewing machine. It is so satisfying going to the fabric store buying a piece of fabric and transforming it into something amazing. What is great about your channel is that for those who don't sew, many of your DIY's projects are achievable as so many are constructed by just using glue. Now everyone is happy!!! Love Ya!!
I had a pattern for these about 55 years ago!! Needless to say the pattern is long gone but I've never forgotten how terrific these pants were!. I am so tickled to find your video and instructions!!! Thanks!
Oh, YES!!! That's it! White pants are great, but those black ones are absolutely gorgeous! The more 'decent' you want to look, the wider pants you make, right? You are my inspiration! And... one more thing: thank you for your English, your articulation is so understandable, I'd recommend to learn English by watching your DIY videos, really. Thanks a lot!
Ugh I wish I had a sewing machine and knew how to use it. I'd make a ton of these. They look so effortlessly chic. All the heart eyes for this. 😍 also love the Blake cameo.
I had pants like this years ago when I lived in the jungle. They were great! I would tie the hem ends of the legs up so they wouldn't drag on the ground. Loved those pants! Thanks for the video, going to make another pair

This will be my next project to do, love your tutorial. I'm thinking of adding an elastic waist band for me anyways, as when I need to go to the bathroom, I can't be struggling. I have bladder issues. Thank you again! So happy I came across this video.

Wow, beautiful work. What type of fabrics do you recommend for this project. I see me actually using some of the fabrics that I have been collecting. Thank you. New subscriber.
How did you hide the knot on the back? I can't see it when you wear the pants. Do you think we could use a button for the first wrap on the back instead of straps?
Traditional Tibetan pants... own a few pairs from at least 40 years ago. Glad to see them revived. But they look great with pattern fabrics! Just my opinion. Still cute!
Ohhh! I LIKE IT!!! You look amazing in them and so I will on my vacation in 3 weeks from now... I'll tag you on my posts thank you thank you XOXO from DR 😘😘😘
I started to make these and part way through ended up adding a 5" panel down both sides of each of the front and back sections to make them wider like your black ones. It was drapey enough material that it worked and I love them! I bought the fabric last year at a thrift shop for $2, and it took me about three hours this afternoon of puttering, but presto...I have new blue flowy pants. Thanks for the inspiration and the instructions! :)

Lol I love how she gives herself a little fashion show at the end of the DIY to showcase her work... she looks like she's really feeling herself and I AM HERE FOR IT 👏🏽👏🏽 YAAASSS 💕😘
These are amazing! I use a wheelchair and have been looking for something that I could make that's a bit fancier than plain pants and that wasn't a skirt. I hadn't been having any luck with ones that would tick the right boxes but these look perfect! I'll have to give them a go :)
So glad this showed up to me as a recommended video- I'll definitely be sticking around!
Love the black ones. Can't wait to try these. Thanks for sharing!! Have a great day!
I wore these in the 70s. I love that you're bringing them back
Orly, you're so good! Can you please do a plus sized outfit and model one day? Love your channel
I would love to see that too
Me too
Me too!
Yes
Yes please.
I will be making this for myself and my sister for her birthday gift!!! Thank you for this!
Finally a clear instructioned video .. your silver fabric is so beautiful 👌🏼
One thing I did differently on some of them, esp if I had a wider strap, was to shorten the back strap so they just overlapped and then used either snaps or some sort of hook & eye fastener to save the bulk of the knot in the back so it was not so lumpy.
that would be perfect! easy swap!
@@Orly_Shani could you make a tutorial on how to make the matching shirt for the linen pants?
OMG, I'm in love with the black ones. I need to buy a sewing machine like right away! ❤❤❤
Yeah, well that one Orly has is probably $5K.
Mine is a refurbished Bernina. Bought it 15 years ago for $1500!
I made myself a pair of wrap and tie culottes from a pair of old T-shirts. I used one of the sleeves make a hidden pocket at the front waist. Folds neatly for packing. Perfect cover up for my swimsuit.
love that!
I love that you do these videos, you're super relatable and fun to watch.
Suggestion: cut your U first, then measure for your waist and cut your sides. Your sides were skimpy because you cut the U out of your 21" waist measurement. :)
I also have a pair like this from a street fair many many moons ago. I'd just like to say for big-bottomed women, you can make one side of the U a little deeper (look at pants patterns where the back is always longer).
And thanks for this! What a fun, easy pattern!
ok I think I get it now. Guh.
Love Ya!!
thank you so much!
Omg...now I need to go back to the fabric store, I'm so making the pants...bravo👍🔥
Cheap option, I've used a sheet I got from the thrift store before
Why haven't I found you before now - Thank you RUclips algorithm 😅 so so happy to have found this channel ✨ 🙏 ✨
Well better late then never. We are now connected :)
I was looking for this tuto on RUclips. Yours is crystal clear about the instructions thank you so much !!!
semlys k Yes she is 💗
I had a pattern for these about 55 years ago!! Needless to say the pattern is long gone but I've never forgotten how terrific these pants were!. I am so tickled to find your video and instructions!!! Thanks!
Every video makes me want to take sewing class. Great job!!
Shana Berekely I have taught myself to sew by watching RUclips videos. I’m not that great, Lol, but It’s so much fun.
Oh, YES!!!
Thanks a lot!
thank you!!
Ugh I wish I had a sewing machine and knew how to use it. I'd make a ton of these. They look so effortlessly chic. All the heart eyes for this. 😍 also love the Blake cameo.
These are super cute and don’t look that hard to make!
OMG I am loving these! And you had me cracking up at 'Crotchal Region'! lol
lol at "Crotchal region " 🤣🤣
It seemed right at the time lol
I had pants like this years ago when I lived in the jungle. They were great! I would tie the hem ends of the legs up so they wouldn't drag on the ground. Loved those pants! Thanks for the video, going to make another pair
what a great idea!
These pants bring back a lot of memories when I was in my teens and it was a fashion must have!! Love it!! 💙💙
I'm completely new to all of this. The 5in for the crotch area is that typical or just for your measurements?
@@pandorahardy6459 She says 5-6in is a universal measurement
I have sewn this and im wearing it today. Thank you! I am a filipina but currently working here in hongkong
Amazing!
Yusssss! This is exactly what I wanted. Thank you so much for this sewing tutorial. We just started winter here in Australia, but I definitely want to make these for summer.
Ooh, I’ve got some nautical cotton that I’ve been saving for something. This is the perfect project! Thank you!
Girl, you are the BOMB! I used to have a pair of these years ago and have been meaning to make a pair. You must have been reading my mind 😀 As always a fantastic job!💝
Best tutorial for these pants I've seen. Thank you!
Those are on point!!! Guuurrrl you modeled the heck out of them.
Both pairs of pants came out fantastic. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
It's called a Kelly skirt 😊 My mom made them for me back in the 70's.
I had a few of these in the 70s!! I loved them!
YES! Gma made them in every color! Great memory!
Are you sure? When I type this "kelly skirt" I get alll type of nonsense videos that have nothing to do with sewing
I was gonna remake a pair I just purchased. Thanks for saving me time and frustration! This will be my first DIY so wish me luck!!!
how would they look on a larger figure person? Awesome tutorial
I love how they look like a skirt. Beautiful!
I LOVE these pants!!! So much so, that I’ve made 3 pairs over the last two days!!! One slight problem…. It’s nearly impossible to use the restroom without taking them off. I should have attempted before leaving the house😂
@FSE: I was wondering about such ..... so thank you for mentioning it.
This will be my next project to do, love your tutorial. I'm thinking of adding an elastic waist band for me anyways, as when I need to go to the bathroom, I can't be struggling. I have bladder issues. Thank you again! So happy I came across this video.
WOW. This is a DIY I might actually do.
You are an excellent teacher with fabulous style!
I love this and the explaning is easy to follow .Thanks so much 😍
Regards from Sri Lanka
I LOVE YOUR TEACHING STYLE! Finally someone that speaks my creative language now I understand and sew! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU. I appreciate you so much! ❤️
Adorable as always! Seems so easy....!! Can't wait to see the DIY necklace vid!! Thanks Orly!! 🙌🏼☺️
I made a ton of these pants about 20 years ago and forgot how easy and fashionable these pants are. Thanks
OKAY WOW YOU'RE SO CREATIVE, THIS IS AMAZING!!!! Can't wait for your future DIYs
I grew up wearing these! I LOVE them! Dress them up or go casual. So easy to make this 'instant' fashion.
Thank you so much for this. I tried it and it was a failure but it's ok cause I know what to do next time. Thank god I used an old saree for the first attempt. 😂😂
Brilliant! Just saw one of these in horrid fabric and costing £70!! Can now make my own! Thank you
I was waiting for this sooo long. I'm dying to make them. Thank you☺️
Your pattern made more sense than any other videos. Thank you so much!!!
Wow, beautiful work. What type of fabrics do you recommend for this project. I see me actually using some of the fabrics that I have been collecting. Thank you. New subscriber.
Most practical, wearable, affordable and stylish DIYs! You are not here to play! You go girl.
How did you hide the knot on the back? I can't see it when you wear the pants. Do you think we could use a button for the first wrap on the back instead of straps?
I wrpaped the pieces from the back TOWARDS the front and ties them all together in the front!
Yes or use velcro
@@@terriharvey1053 Nice idea - but No *Way* am I putting Velcro anywhere *Near* my 'crotchal area' - or waist!
@@florencepierce1864 it wouldn't be near your crotch. It would be on the waistband. You put the rough side to face out
Traditional Tibetan pants... own a few pairs from at least 40 years ago.
The black one for me, absolutely beautiful, thanks for sharing❤❤
Always WOW... this is the first time i comment your vid.
Always love your shoe tutorial.
Regards from Bali - Indonesia❤
Thank you!!
Wonderful. You are fast becoming my favourite DIY RUclipsr
thanks babes!
Finally 🎉the easiest description of how these are done
wow! thats amazing! thank you! I love the linen fabric. is it normal linen? it has this beautiful shine to it. If it has a name can you please let me know?
I'm looking forward to making a pair of these for summer. I love breezy things that are all flowy, and I love wide pants. So these are the perfect combination. Plus they look quite easy for someone who, like me, is a beginner sewer.
I had bought a pant just like this about 35 years ago while on a trip to jamaca
Omg I love this I was looking for pants like this because we used to wear them as massage therapist, but I could not find them anywhere! Thank you and the black ones are sooo amazing
