For the longest time I've run the 14T front and 36T rear sprocket, and while that's been fine, I really love the 14/37 combo I have on my Grom with almost identical mods, so I've decided to try that on my Monkey to see if it's as good.

Ya dont need to take off the front sprocket guard. Use a piece of mechanics wire from the old to new chain and pull it through.

I'm a big guy, 6ft 3 270 and my wife weighs 180. I switched to 14 and 37 tooth sprockets along with mobbed tires and it's perfect for dirt , trail riding. Also now when we do go on the roads it evened the top speed on both bikes even with the weight difference we both get about 55 mph. That's good enough for the amount of riding on the road we do and it's nice to have the bikes equalized.

14t front 37t rear on my OG Grom, first gear is short, top speed is 58mph or so on the limiter lol (I'm 145lbs, Kitaco clutch cover, intake, exhaust and tune) acceleration overall is fantastic and wheelies are easier to get up.
Interesting, I have the same setup on my Grom and loved it so much I put it on the monkey. So far I topped out at 67 with my mods, and the knobby tires, so I’m pretty happy with that!
Nice. The 3:20 min mark is always the start of my personal hell. Any idea what the real value of that free floating "c" shaped piece on the front sprocket cover is? What if I dont put it on? Thx
That's a chain guard to ensure a broken chain or jumped chain doesn't crack your engine case. Super important in my opinion!

Chains should be replaced before they reach 102% of their original length. Probably why your 98 links are the same length as the 100 link. Works out at about 2%.

So you don’t have to rivet the chain? Also did you leave it at 100 links or take two off?
I bought it to exact link size, but you can remove a link or two if needed as there’s a master link

What tooth count have you got onfrt/ rear now, is it for pull or top end. Thanks John
I'm running the 14/37 combo and it's great for low-mid range pull. For top end, stay with the stock ratios
Haven’t messed with my sprockets yet. I have the yoshi rs3, MNNTHBX intake and DHM flash. I still feel there’s more top end available. What’s your top speed with the sprocket mods?
I topped out at 67mph after the sprockets. I’ve had them on my Grom for a long time and topped out at 67 on that too, but don’t have the high compression piston on that bike.
@@John5XR Another interesting thing is the shorter gearing from your Mobbers. They're 130/70 vs 130/80 of the stock tires. That's good for a 5% bump alone. The 37t over the 36t is only a 2.6% bump.
I already have a 14t front and am now waffling between the 36t an 37t for the rear on stock-sized tires. I have intake/exhaust/cam/ECU flash and we're about the same size. Was leaning to 36t but am now considering 37t after seeing your results.
Go 37! I have the 14/37 on my Grom with all the same mods but the high compression piston, and ran the stock monkey tires on it and it pulled 67mph as well.
@@John5XR I installed the 14/37 on my Monkey last weekend. I loved it so much that I ordered the 12 o’clock speedo corrector. Installed that tonight and she is dialed right in! Thanks so much for your videos. They make all these mods so much easier!

This is kind da of an upgrade but..the real upgrade is going from 420 sprockets and chain to a 428 sprockets and chain...that's what I did.. much stronger.
Wouldn’t that heavier being wider? I don’t wanna ask more of my 10hp to try and spin! I don’t think I need anything stronger either, not much power going through these.
@@John5XR To your point, I agree that we're not at risk of breaking a 420 chain with 12 hp. For sure, the 428 will be heavier, though I've read that it's not a big difference if going with a good X-ring chain vs. an O-ring chain. A 428 chain will not stretch nearly as much as the stock 420 size. My stock chain has stretched like crazy unlike all my other bikes that rarely need adjusting. You're probably in the same boat looking at how your new chain and old chain are about the same length. I am going to go with a 428 with my replacement so I'm adjusting the chain less. Honda uses a 428 on the CRF125. Laziness generally wins.
