  • If you've visited our channel, you know we're fans of Furch. While we've reviewed the Master's Choice models previously, today we're taking a look at their Vintage line, through the demonstration of this beautiful Vintage 2 D-SR Dreadnought. With a top of solid Sitka Spruce and East Indian Rosewood back and sides, herringbone, and sharp binding, this old school aesthetic might remind you of a Martin D-28, but the tonal nuances that are synonymous with the Furch name are what might make you consider this alternative to the classic. Take a listen to Chris McKee, and see for yourself why we fully endorse this beautiful instrument.

    The description he gave to this guitar sounds much like my 1987 Santa Cruz Tony Rice Model D. An amazingly responsive guitar that can be played lightly and then as you dig in it just keeps on giving. It never gets muddy or loses its composure. I refer to as "the cannon" because of the power it has. I've been considering selling off the SC and if I replace it with another dread, this will be on my list. These Furch guitars really have a lot going for them based on the reviews.

      @@erikthorell9678 this is what I got from Stageshop, a very big furch dealer ( not exactly his quotes )
      The Vintage guitars share all the bracing and construction as the color series, no massive difference in sound
      As all Furch’s, OM’s have their own bracing patter, different from GA’s and dreads
      The 2/3 seem to have a bit more clarity from their testing, but it’s hard to notice even in back to back comparisons, but also they’ve noticed it enough, with enough consistency in the guitars they receive in the shop
      Mainly it’s a visual thing, the 2/3 have a very nice inlay on the fretboard, bound neck/head, koa on the 3 and abalone Roseta while the 1 series is very barebones

    Especially when strumming there is quite a bit of fret buzz. Is this due to player error or is it because of the guitar?
    I'm asking because I tested out three Furchs in a store a while ago and two of them also had similar amount of fret buzz and I wasn't playing very hard actually. I didn't have time to do any analysis on why but I didn't think of the action as particularly low. I've played also some Martins and Eastmans and those I could hammer on without any fret buzz.
    If you have the time it would be nice if you can comment on your experience.

    • @AlamoMusic
      @AlamoMusic  3 года назад +1

      The default action is likely set lower on the Furch than Martin. Martin’s are also set up with higher action than Taylor out of the box. Depending on playing style, as well as pick angle it could create buzz but could be adjusted with a setup.

    Please learn how to pronounce the name. For those of you saying they’re better than Martin, Martin has a very wide variety of models and all are of good quality for the money. If you spend an equal amount as a Collings or Bourgeois you’’ll find similar quality and the sound will generally be at least as good. Sound is objective. Some like bolt-on necks but I believe the Martin neck gives a superior sound to any bolt-on neck (because I prefer that traditional sound). The Martin-style neck is much more expensive to produce. The Martin 16 line has a similar neck to Collings and Furch and many others. The finish on the Collings is excellent. I’ve owned Collings, Santa Cruz, many Martins, and various other high-end and other guitars. Although I prefer the Martin sound, I’m not a fanboy for Martin. I have issues with them. Number one, Martin greatly increased the models available in the last several decades. For those who couldn’t afford a Martin, this allowed many to purchase them, but they weren’t the Traditional Line that made Martin the most famous and most-copied in the world. Martin has the Traditional Line that is built using CNC machines as well as hand-made techniques for some things. The Custom Shop snd Authentic Lines are mostly hand-made to my understanding. The Authentic is easily equal to brands such as Collings and Bourgeois if you prefer the traditional sound. If you like a more modern sound like Collings, Taylor and Bourgeois have you will prefer those brands. I presently own a Collings and several Martins. I have owned many others. Because of the volume Martin must provide, they can’t keep the lower end and middle prices down and still provide the woods that they always used in the past. Other makers can use those woods because theyvdon’t sell nearly as many guitars. Martin still uses fine woods but they will use ebony that isn’t completely black in some models where in the past only solid black was used. This is helping to preserve the wood supply and almost all companies are doing this.
    Personally, I think Martin has done a good job over the years in being a responsible company. I think they tried to cash in on their name and offered too many models. I wish that they had continued to be a more conservative company. I see Even Collings has started to market a lower cost line. In the past they were selling mostly high end guitars. Bourgeois is doing the same. I haven’t personally compared Martin to Furchbut if I did (and I hope to) I would compare sound quality, wood quality, etc for a given price level. I am sure that Furch is a very high quality product. I’m also sure it will not compare to the Authentic Series or most Custom Shop guitars, just as it will not compare to high end Collings, Santa Cruz or Bourgeois. I’m just tired of blanket statements like “better than a Martin”. Better than a $1500 Martin? Possibly. Everyone should understand that Martin is the foundation of all of ghesd guitars. Most of the Collings, Bourgeois, SantaCruz, Boucher, Fourch and all the reat are copied after the Martin. Most of the rest are copies of Gibson. Martin still makes many great models. If you can afford it you can buy a totally handmade boutique guitar made by a great luthier from the woods you choose that will likely sound the way you want it.

    It has a bit of a Gibson flare to it....To me these are what Gibson's should sound like.

      Ditto. Martin has a huge attitude/ego problem, they think they’re perfect. Guitar defects are never their fault. I doubt they’ve ever repaired or replaced a guitar on warranty. No more Martins.
