The voice of an angel.
Angelic indeed!
Oh yes
Or angolsaxon
Great to hear it in modern English instead of Swedish sometimes :) love it
+Jarl Mos I quite agree. But the English translation leaves much out(As, I have had pointed out to me recently.).
The Norse version actually denotes her as a troll(Not just an unconverted Pagan Maiden.). Not that she was ugly.
A Normal human seeming Fay, is often described(In Norse folk tales.) as a troll. The deceitful tones, probably doesn't mean he thinks she's lying. Rather though, he assumes she's not being completely on the level otherwise.
The English version here, loses much inflection.
well, an unconverted pagan maiden and troll were the same thing iirc
if you would listen to it sang in old English you would thought it's swedish
Enjoy this if you enjoy a great pre battle song sung by a Pussy
@@Schralenberger The East Anglians had much in common with the Swedes originally. (Very little with the Danes or Norwegians by comparison) Cheers.
awesome i'd been looking for a english version of herr mannelig for ages
urbanmyths95 Same here, I just wish he would have kept all of the lyrics. This is a shortened version.
good point
Wow. I love how you manage to play the melody with the strumming as well. I play the celtic harp, and like all harpists I find, that no matter how many strings your harp has, it is always at least one too few. So I am very much humbled and baffled to hear what you can get out of just six strings.
Such clear and expressive singing. Understood and felt every word.
First time hearing it in English. It is lovely. ^_^
Way late to the party, but this is the first rendition of this piece I ever heard. Brian, you have inspired me to no end with your music.
I've heard the exact same song in Swedish Before. Both the Swedish and the English Versions are beautiful.
i agree they are both some of the most beautiful songs i think i have ever heard
I’ve heard it butchered in Italian and German before. Lyrics-wise nothing comes close to the Swedish lyrics. I do like the lyre though.
Emma Härdelin from "Garmarna" and "Triakel" sings a nice version, in Swedish "Herr Mannelig"👌
@@Firewalkerbg in butchered Italian and Germany is the version of Haggard
But this version changes the narrative somewhat
For all who asked for lyrics:
Early one morning before the sun did rise
And the birds sang their sweet song
The pagan maid proposed to the fair young knight
He thought She had deceitful tongue
Sir Mannelig, Sir Mannelig will you marry me
For all that I'll gladly give thee
You may only answer with a yes or no
To you I will give the twelve great steeds
That graze in a shady grove
To you I will give the twelve fine mills
That stand between Tillo and Terno
Sir Mannelig, Sir Mannelig will you marry me
For all that I'll gladly give thee
You may only answer with a yes or no
To you I will give the gilded sword
That jingles from rings of gold
And strike with it in battle as you will
On the battlefield you will conquer
Sir Mannelig, Sir Mannelig will you marry me
For all that I'll gladly give thee
You may only answer with a yes or no
Gifts such as these I would gladly receive
Were they from a Christian woman
The pagan maid turned and ran out the door
She wailed and shrieked so loudly
"Had I gotten that handsome young knight
From my torment I would be free "
Sir Mannelig, Sir Mannelig will you marry me
For all that I'll gladly give thee
You may only answer with a yes or no
Only with a yes or no
I am so very touched by your voice … it's so full of feeling.
i like this song. but i wish i could also hear it in old English.
Derrick Bridges old English is very similar
This original song is actually in swedish.
Wardruna does a version called Herr Mannalig
Bereitschaft old English is from 1000 years ago. It’s very different but has similarities.
Middle English would be more appropriate to the period.
You sir are a talent! Hearing this sung in English beautiful.
This is the first time I've heard a good English rendition of this song.
I love coming back to watch this, still. Never change. You're amazing 🤩
I purchased an Anglo Saxen/ Germanic Lyre recently and am pleased to find this song played on such an instrument. And in English! Thank you. I will play this often to learn your technique.
Where’d you buy it? I want one too
This brought tears to my eyes. Wonderful singing.
Your timbre ist simply magnificent!
It is the first time that I hear it, incredible, you have a beautiful voice.
Really great! Much respect from Germany
Absolutely beautiful....
beautiful song and beautifully sung! inspiring to the point that Im now looking to buy a lyre and learn!
It's been 4 years. Did you? I'm waiting on a lyre right now.
Tärnö was a noble manor, i traced it back to 1261 when Birger Jarl (Earl) wrote a letter to Hamburg, the letter is still in Hamburg city archive.

I looked for your music on Amazon but was disappointed to not find it. Wish I could conveniently listen to you man you rock!
Love it. Thx for sharing this
Absolutely beautiful
Absolutely beautiful version
Would love to hear this on Spotify, Brian.
Cool! First time I've ever heard this song in any other language than Swedish, my mother tongue....sounds a bit different, with undercurrents of Celtic music (I guess?), and without the 'classical Scandinavian melancholy'.
But still cool...especially since it's just one guy performing as well. Well done, good job - keep it up! Cheers from Sweden.
You have a truly beautiful tone to your voice. I feel completely transported to another world listening. Well done:)
Ellie Kamphuis yes! I swear it takes me back to place I've never been. Missing people I've never met

Hi Brian! Great version :)
Wonderful
Goosebumps.
yo. phenomenal singing.
what a voice
It sounds so beautiful I would love to play this when I proposed and then you get again at my wedding
Made me cry
YESSSS!!!! You hit the nail square. Most describe the "The Troll Maiden" as she is named in the Old Norse version, as an actual troll. Which is a possible meaning indeed. Troll can also mean the equivalent of Faerie, or fa/enchanted . Or it may even mean witch/wizard. But it's also can indeed be applied( and was by Christians) to the Pagan. Either merely Still pagan, or jointly both Christian, and Pagan( as many were). Or that her father was even a Goddi( pagan priest). But the most likely indeed is , that she is the daughter of a landed wealthy, unconverted Lord. He refuses her not because she is troll Ala Shrek. But because of religious differences, which are most impolitic. Your interpretation is indeed the actual meaning.
Pleaaaase the lyrics in the description !?

Delightful :)
This is King Harold Godwinson and Queen Edyth Swannesha's song! We listened to it in Anglo-Saxon England! Thank you, Brian! Do you have more songs from this programme?!
it really makes the hairs stand up
Nice song
Tuning: D Major Hexatonic (DEF#GAB) Tuned up 3/4ths step (so roughly between EbFGAbBbC and EF#AbABC#)
Did you the English translation by yourself? I did a translation into German.
wow...
Very beautiful! I subbed! What do you tune your lyre too and did you make it yourself?
Wow, sounds real great. Practising for my self also. How did you tune the lyre? E/F#/G#/A/B/C# looks right to me? But something looks different? could you tel me? Many thanks for sharing.
This is a beautiful rendering of the song, bravo! What is the tuning of the lyre?
A beautiful mix of stunning talent interesting history
I love england
bello ...
Still a better love story than twilight.
divino
Where can I purchase this amazing song? The website is giving me some trouble! ):
How is this lyre tuned?
I've just modified the translation so that all the folkloric elements are now retained. It just felt weird for me to hear of someone claiming to be cursed, but then only being a non-christian. But having been turned into mountain troll definitely counts as a curse.
Early one morning before the sun did rise
And the birds sang their sweet song.
The mountain troll proposed to the fair young knight
She had a sweet deceitful tongue.
Sir Mannelig sir Mannelig will you marry me
For all that I’ll gladly give thee
You may only answer with a yes or no
If you desire it all so
To you I will give the twelve great steeds
that graze in a shaded groove
To you I will give the twelve fine mills
that stand between Tillö and Ternö
Sir Mannelig sir Mannelig will you marry me
For all that I’ll gladly give thee
You may only answer with a yes or no
If you desire it all so
To you I will give the gilded sword
that jingles from rings of gold
And strike with it in battle as you will
in the battlefield you will conquer
Sir Mannelig sir Mannelig will you marry me
For all that I’ll gladly give thee
You may only answer with a yes or no
If you desire it all so
Gifts such as these I would gladly receive
Were they from a Christian woman
But you are the foulest mountain troll
Of the nicor and devil’s congregation
Sir Mannelig sir Mannelig will you marry me
For all that I’ll gladly give thee
You may only answer with a yes or no
If you desire it all so
The mountain troll turned and ran out the door
She wailed and shrieked so loudly
Had I gotten that handsome young knight
From my torment I would be free.
Sir Mannelig sir Mannelig will you marry me
For all that I’ll gladly give thee
You may only answer with a yes or no
If you desire it all so
Smygskytt #1 but that's the whole point: she was a pagan and she was trying to get him to marry her, as that would help relieve her of her social stigma. Mountain troll was what they called the pagans, it was non-literal.
no, you didnt improve the lyrics, "nicor and devlis congregation" lol
@@bakatstravarenmattsson3418 From the spawn of Necken* and the devil, says a certain TrampGuy (who did the translation already in 2012 ...) * Water spirit lyricstranslate.com/nl/translator/trampguy
Troll has another meaning in many Nordic languages. It is related to sorcery. “Trøllabundin” by Eivør, (Faroese is fairly similar to Swedish) is translated as “Spellbound”. Even today the translation for sorcerer in Swedish is trollkarl.
“Curse” in this context is metaphorical in how she is treated because of her non-Christian status.
Also in the versions of “Herr Mannelig” that are translated as being about a mythical creature, the word troll is often replaced with the words for wood-nymph, and more usually mermaid and neck (which I believe is related to the mythological Nøk).
Fun fact: there was also something I read about the story being similar to “The Little Mermaid” by Hans Christian Anderson.
What tuning on the lyre?
What is the string hz for this lyre?
this sounds really great! but i prefer the original language! any ways! the way you cover it was amazing! thank you!
You bet your strings if I was a king in a past life you would bless my court for sure 😃
I would kill for someone to take the time to teach me how to play this on the piano!
Be cool learning song on Ocarina
How are your strings tuned? Scales?
i love it in swedish but i Ƿould like to hear it in old english
does your lyre have 2 bridges??
