Ghaetta 14th c. Medieval dance music feat. David McCormick on vielle, Brian Kay lutes & percussion
Please like and subscribe, it really helps!
Ghaetta is a 14th c. long form Medieval dance piece from Italy. The type of dance is known as an Istanpitta, and comes to us as a single voiced melody in a manuscript that can best be described as chicken scratch.
The instruments featured are 4 course (early) Medieval lute, Medieval Oud, goblet drum, and vielle played by David McCormick.
This was intended to take the place of a live concert performance, so all instrument performances in this video were done in a single take.
Thanks for watching!

Santa Maria Strella Do Dia CSM 100 - featuring David McCormick from EMAP
Просмотров 3,9 тыс.3 года назад
Please like and subscribe! It really helps... This is one of the tunes from my favorite Medieval manuscript, the Cantigas de Santa Maria c. 1252 ce. It features my great friend David McCormick on the vielle, a kind of Medieval fiddle. This was part of a program David, EMAP, and I put together for Amherst Glebe Arts Response that happened in January. Special thank you to Lynn Kable and EMAP for ...
Ancient music - Oldest complete song "Epitaph of Seikolos" - Greek Lyre, Har-Mose lute
Просмотров 51 тыс.3 года назад
A very old song on very old instruments... Epitaph of Seikolos is the oldest full length song in existence. Here, I accompany the song on some of the most ancient plucked instruments; Greek lyre, ancient lute, and the Har-Mose (Egyptian) lute which is the oldest surviving lute in the world dating as far back as 1490 bc.
Con Que La Lavare

Con Que La Lavare is a Spanish folk song from Renaissance times. It was used as the catalyst for many motet and other multi-voiced compositions during the 16th c. Following in that same tradition, I composed a slightly modernized version of my own. Hope you enjoy! www.BrianKayMusic.com Brian Kay is a modern-day troubadour. Thomas Morley "Lover and his lass" from As You Like It by W. Shakespeare - Brian Kay - Lute & Voice
Просмотров 6 тыс.4 года назад
Dedicated to Jeannette Sorrell It was a lover and his lass appears in the play As You Like It by William Shakespeare. This version was composed by Thomas Morley as a lute song. It has a reputation for being one of the most difficult English lute songs to play on the lute. I arranged this as a mashup with John Dowland's Tremolo Fantasia (Fancy). I though both pieces complimented each other nicel...
Wulf & Eadwacer - Old English song c. 9th c. - Brian Kay, Anglo Saxon Lyre & Voice
Просмотров 63 тыс.4 года назад
Wulf & Eadwacer is an Old English, or Anglo Saxon poem from the Exeter Book, circa 9th c. It is a very strange and mysterious text which has been the source of much scholarly debate about its interpretation. I've done my best with the translation for the purposes of this video, but there are many ways to interpret and translate the text, and some of the words have double, and even triple meanin...

Democracy (the road is long) - Brian Kay
Nothing will appeases thy loneliness. Only death. And to play for the Gods can only rain strength and the sickness of love
Im having a hard time believing theres others. Many years ago i looked away to hear something close. Thanks man
Now that's living the dream.
That was some good “Chicken Scratch” Brought to life, made it real.
That is some good “Chicken Scratch”
This is the origin of the guitar !
Wow
incredible i can vibe with it as a middle eastern that shows how middle eastern music is direct continiuty of Greco-Roman music
soft and haunting. Thank you for your dedication. you have a beautiful voice
He's singing the song but not playing it weird that's an improvisation
beautiful! thank you!
your rendition of this makes me feel like you wrote it. you hadn't recently had your heart broken before you performed this, had you? incredible performance
Such a nice performance! do you have this on Spotify?
Well, that certainly rocked.
The recreation of the instruments is awesome and the performance. Awesome there. I have problems with the version. Greek people loved simplicity, and the lyrics invites to relax and joy, you made it sound almost baroque, almost tedious. I could feel even the air of the sea in the melody, but not in your version
Turtle shell products are illegal.
Almost modern music!
Wow....fuckin great
You have the lyrics wrong. The lyric is "to telos ho khronos" not "to telos e khronos"
Thank you for sharing this! Great work! Bravo! :)
Bro! You are a super badass! Respect!
Bro! Saw you on the Twa Corbies Ayreheart vid and had to find out who you were! You’re amazing!
That is beautiful, and you have such a lovely voice.

Best version of this I’ve heard this song and played it since the 1974 or something like that. I’ve heard thousands of versions of this this is very cool and the sound quality is phenomenal.
it is absolutely incredible that a song managed to survive for over a thousand years. What a beautiful song too. Its such a terrible shame we lose so much to time.
" 🎵O Kronos Apaitei 🎵" ... Time Requires its due
La Gaeta quel instrument de musique magnifique. Et vous en jouez si bien. Bravo.
A voice of an angel wth💕🙌
Impressive!
By any chance was this made into a single i want to put rhis on Spotify
So haunting, music reaching across the centuries, heard by me in the most modern way possible, via the internet. Beautiful instruments, wonderful work.
I want to hear Honky Tonk Women on these instruments.
No, not the oldest song. Hurrian H.6 is complete. I know I have translated it! Have you translated the seikilos song?
Amazing.Love It.
Can we buy an album of all these together please?
beautiful but not the oldest complete song i believe that title would go to the hurrian hymn no.6 from the ancient sumerians which existed long before the greeks
😮❤😊
Bro...u are..❤ great thank U❤
❤❤❤
So enthralling!! Thank you for putting your time and dedication into recreating what these beautiful songs must have sounded like ❤
What was the source for the musical accompaniment?
wonderful...my guitar weeps
Beautiful. I heard this on Ancient FM and had to find it so I could listen to it more.
Not only one of my favorite renditions of this song, but one of the videos that got me into early music in the first place!
Muy lindo! ❤
That was beautiful ❤
Love this!... What key is the instruments in?... Great work!
The Roman’s tries to control music or people didn’t they? So this was before Roman Catholicism?
Isn’t the lyre use in Egyptian music?
