  • When music critics found out former Beatle Paul McCartney was writing a movie theme back in the 70s, the reactions were definitely mixed. Yeah, some were positive. But others? They had no faith in the music. In fact one of the producers was ready to pass on what would become a game changer for a lounge act…Paul McCartney and Wings reinvigorated one of the most popular film franchises in history. And then Guns N’ Roses cover made it Sir Paul’s most popular composition collectively with a stellar cover. Up next he struggle to get this song in James Bond’s movie of the same name and how McCartney had the last laugh.

In 1972 movie producers Harry Saltzman and Albert R. Broccoli were gearing up for the 8th installment of one of cinema's most successful franchises. Bond... James Bond. The title of the flick was ‘Live and Let Die’ and it was based on Ian Flemming’s 1954 novel of the same name. However, the series’ iconic leading man Sean Connery had retired from the role... which left the franchise at a precarious crossroads.
Sir Roger Moore, who was actually their original second choice behind Connery, got the call. And though Moore was already a journeyman with shows like The Saint and Maverick to his credit, Saltzman and Broccoli still needed to hedge their bets. So, they connected with another ‘Sir’ in the entertainment industry…
Sir Paul McCartney. At this point in Paul’s career, he was playing with his post-Beatles British-American rock band, Wings. Formed in 1971, the line-up would change frequently over the years. But at this time, besides Paul, the band consisted of his wife Linda McCartney on keyboards, drummer Denny Seiwell, guitarist Henry McCullough, and Denny Laine on guitar and bass.
Previously in 1971, they had released their debut record Wild Life and were actually working on their follow-up Red Rose Speedway when McCartney agreed to the project. Paul reveled in the challenge of writing to order and gladly accepted the commission. “As a writer who thinks of himself as part-craftsman,” he said, “the idea is akin to being asked to make a bit of furniture for the national collection or something. Y’know, there’s a prestige thing. There was for me, anyway.”
Actually, at this point, the screenplay wasn’t even finished. So McCartney spent a Saturday reading Flemming’s novel then got to writing to the next day. And before the weekend was over, the song was done. Incredible! When Wings co-founder Denny Seiwell recounted the events, he said, "Everybody thought it was cool that we were doing something for James Bond... we were up at the house one day and he had just read the book the night before, and he sat down at the piano and said, 'James Bond... James Bond... da-da-dum!', and he started screwing around at the piano. Within 10 minutes, he had that song written. It was awesome.”

George and Ringo wrote a couple of really good ones. My top pick changes based on my mood at the time. Right now I’ll go with imagine.

My understanding is that Macca taped every show, mixed them all down, then took the best three of each song, remixed them, took the best one and did a final mix - that's Wings Over America.

As great as “Live And Let Die” is, my favorite Bond song is “For Your Eyes Only”, sung by the great Sheena Easton. I must admit, though, my reasons for this are personal. I recorded the audio for five of the MTV “Rock Against Drugs” public service announcements, and Sheena was one of the artists. I found her to be a total pro, and just DELIGHTFUL! I’m telling you - if you ever had the chance to spend any time with Sheena, you couldn’t help but fall in love with her. She’s amazingly pretty in person, and just wonderful to work with. What’s really astounding is that she’s such a tiny lady, yet she can get these HUGE sounds to come out of her. I’ve worked with Belinda Carlisle (formerly of The Go-Go’s) and also with The Bangles on the MTV project, and they were all great to work with. But Sheena was the one who stands out in my mind as the best of the stars involved with “Rock Against Drugs”. Any time I hear her voice, I find myself stopping whatever I’m doing for a moment and thinking, “WOW, What a voice!”, and then I realize it’s the lovely Sheena Easton, and then there’s a flood of happy memories of the time I worked with her.

Live and Let Die is the ultimate Bond title song. Literally captures the essence of who James Bond is. One of McCartney’s best. You know, last fall, I was talking to one of the teachers at my school who has been there for longer than I’ve been alive. I told her that this was the #2 song on her birthday. She was amazed by that and told me that she loves watching James Bond movies. None other than Bond. Paul’s a legend, man.

My mother assembled John Lennon’s, 1964 Rickenbacker Guitar.
My mother... Dorothy J. Tandle was working at (RIC) Electro Strings Rickenbacker Guitars back in February 1964 in Santa Ana California. The phone rang at our house at 6:10AM with the GM of Ric Ward Deaton asking if my mom could come in ASAP to work on a special rush order guitar
My mother was asked to follow Lennon’s Custom guitar from start to finish.
This was the Black & White semi-hollow bodied “Miami” model (serial number db122, d=1964, b=Feb.).
After the wood shop cut out the body, she sanded the body, then worked on the neck & fret board, then she assembled the guitar after the finish was applied. After finishing the guitar, she gave it to the tuner/inspector. He was a good friend and gave mom a ride home three times per week. He asked my mother “Since you built it, what song would you like to hear?” My mother said…“Peanut Butter And Jelly”.
That was a song she wrote and the tuner knew the cords. My mother sang the song as it was being played. SO… The very first song ever played on John Lennon’s famous 325 was a song my mother wrote about the messes I made as a child.
There is a “GREEN” check mark inside the guitar.
She did all the work herself.
She did the same for many custom orders at that time.
She was trained in all areas except the wood shop and finishes. She assembled George's 360-12 string first ever, John's 325-12 string first ever, Paul's 4001S Left handed Bass first ever. Ten years later…..In the 1974, I worked for “Fender Musical Instruments” in Fullerton California.
I made two Fender Rhodes Electric Pianos for John Lennon/Apple Studios.
The one used on “Walls and Bridges”
“Well if they’re gonna send one, send two cause I’d like one as well”
John Lennon ordering a Fender Rhodes Electric Piano at the Apple studios.
(Elton John recorded “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds” with the same piano)
My mother and myself are the only mother/son that both built an instrument for John Lennon.
My mother made guitars for many famous Rockers, including the red guitar that was smashed by Peter Townsend of the WHO and is in the Rock HOF. Chris Squire, Roger Waters, Paul McCartney (left-handed 1964 4001S FG Rickenbacker bass) , John Entwistle, George Harrison’s 12 String. Roger McGuinn 12 string and many others.
I have built pianos for “You name it”
just about everyone IE: “Pink Floyd” on “Dark Side Of The Moon”
It is our little contribution to Classic Rock.
I’m very proud of that fact.

    • @AliasMark69
      @AliasMark69 2 года назад +2

My mom “Dotty” made most of special order famous RIC guitars of that era.
Harrison‘s, Lennon’s, Townsend’s & McGuinn’s 12 strings. The first time she had to put strings on a 12 string with the double tuning head style she had to ask Ward (GM) how to do it and it took him three tries to get it right. Harrison’s 360/12 was the second 12 string ever made, but the first with new tuning design and the model the rest were made after making it the real first Production Model.
At their New York meeting, Lennon asked Hall to make him a twelve-string model to match his 325, and in March '64, Rickenbacker shipped a 325-12 Jet-glo guitar to him in London.
“Dotty gives our guitars the woman’s touch, that’s why they are so sexy looking” - Ward Deaton GM at RIC 1964

I remember always hearing Wings music on Delta airlines radio stations. My Dad worked for Delta & everytime we flew (which was quite a bit by 70s standards) as soon as I'd get my headphones, I'd immediately plugged them & frantically search for that station that always played Paul McCartney & Wings. This song has always been in my top 5

"When you were young/and your heart was open book/you used to say live and let live" followed by the back up singers very Lennonesque "you know you did, you know you did" always felt like a hidden barb, directed at John during this time when they were still feuding.

    • @hellsjamfleas
      @hellsjamfleas 2 года назад +1

It does have a vibe like that but they'd actually made up by then and were keeping conflict on the low down. Lennon got a lot of backlash for his attack song How Do You Sleep. And Paul was getting annoyed by endless questions about the Beatles and the fighting.
Paul contacted John and they made a peace agreement at the end of 72, from then on they were chatting on the phone regularly and eventually the business conflicts passed.

Live and Let Die the song and movie are a couple of my favorites. The song could have easily replaced Bohemian Rhapsody in Wayne’s World as that classic that you can rock out to unexpectedly. My top five favorite Bond theme songs, in chronological order: Live and Let Die, Nobody Does It Better (Carly Simon), A View To A Kill (Duran Duran), Goldeneye (Tina Turner), and You Know My Name (Chris Cornell). Nobody Does It Better is actually one of the first pop songs I remember getting really hooked on when I was a small kid (like six or seven), years before I even knew what James Bond was. I was young enough to be a McCartney fan first, THEN I found out about the Beatles! I'm glad it happened that way, because people seem to want to tear down Paul's music for not being as good as the Beatles. I got to listen to it without prejudice. I will always be a fan of this terrific musician, my favorite singer/songwriter of all time. His solo stuff was great, and rock critics need to finally admit it. By the way, the line is "in this ever-changing world in which we're livin'", not "in this ever-changing world in which we live in." DJs always make fun of this "improper English" after they play Live and Let Die on the radio.

"Another Way to Die" by Jack White and Alicia Keys doesn't get enough love. Even though "Quantum of Solace" is seen as on of the more uneven entries in the Daniel Craig era, that song is friggin' awesome. Another little interesting piece of trivia in the great "Bond song that never got used" catagory was "Man with the Golden Gun" by the original Alice Cooper group in 1974. Of course it was a "cart before the horse" moment, with the band taking it on themselves to write and record it first and then try to sell it to the filmmakers, who ultimately passed and used a much more boring, bland theme song that no one remembers.

I haven't had a concert experience like that before or since. That's one reason why Paul Mccartney is my most favorite musician of all time. His former Beatle-mate Ringo is my most favorite drummer of all time.

Live he always does the pyrotechnics. You can feel the heat. It’s pretty intense. Was a wonderful concert!
Saw with my parents also. Will never forget it.

Favorite childhood memory: my older brother Steve borrowed amps and speakers from high school music dept. and I came home from school one day to hear the entire house shaking at full volume !
