People thought they were actually married to each other. They would go places with their actual spouses and people thought they were cheating on each other.
You are so correct. They were both raging alcoholics during their time on The Dick Van Dyke show, yet few people actually knew about it! They were both incredibly discrete performers.
It's for the best that they didn't get involved off camera. You could do videos on known "office romances" from TV shows. But they obviously made a good couple on screen. There were other reunions. The other woman special helped Mary get her next series. Then CBS didn't want her character to be a divorcee'. They thought some viewers would think she divorced Dick Van Dyke. After he got another series with a different wife, some woman hit him in the head with an umbrella. She said, "how dare you leave that sweet Laura!" Their personal lives had issues. Dick's first marriage ended. He had a longtime relationship with another woman. After her death, he later remarried. Mary's second marriage to Grant Tinker also ended. Her third marriage lasted until her death. We still have reruns.
No offense, but that's stupid Hollywood talk. In real life, affairs ruin marriages and people. I really like most Clint Eastwood movies but can't stand Bridges of Madison County for the whole affair stuff.
Both were married at the time.

Mary divorced her first husband because she was in love with Van Dyke
They were married at the time to other people? So what?

I am glad they did not go through with it, they were great as friends. Thanks Bob
Personally, I'm glad it didn’t happen 😮

things sometimes work out for best.

Wow. I suppose I didn't see that coming. Oh if people would just follow the 10 commandments. What a better place we would live in.
❤❤

I hope and pray MTM realized her need to be reconciled to God and trusted in Christ as her savior before she passed.
or she got a chance to settle things afterwards
Disappointing to hear this.
Thank you! It's horrible to hear someone effectively say, "It's terrible that we didn't cheat on our spouses!" wtf!
Oh so the "All American Girl" wanted to give into Hollyweird 😮. Good thing van Dyke had integrity! 🤓😎✌🏻
I'll get Preachy! This wouldn't fly on your F&E channel and maybe that's what happened! Sad commentary on both fronts!🤬
