Useful posting. I have two 1249's and both occasionally have the loose turnarm assembly bolt. As with your work, tightening solved. my automatic play issue even without changing my steuerpimpel. One more thing, the Dual "steuerpimpel" part is properly pronounced: "stoyerpimple" (it is a German machine of course). The word "steuer" means "to steer". The guy who steers a boat is a "steuermann".
Nice. Super useful. Need to fix 1226 for my neighbor and it's the same problem. Thank you very much for the trick. Nonw, I need to find this little piece of rubber which will be probably a pain.... But thank you because I was initially searching elsewhere and was not finding the problem. Super content and nice channel. Thank you so much for your time and such great content 😊
I replaced the Steuerpimpel in my Dual CS 721 a few months back, along with some of the tacky silicone grease that is recommended for the surface it contacts to move the tonearm. It seems like a flaky way of doing things, but I bought the turntable in 1978 and it took 40 years to start having that problem. Now it is good as new. From what I've been told, they did this to make the automatic function less noisy and it's pretty effective.
The "Stupid Pimple" is actually a pretty decent way to doa clutch mechanism. If the tone arm is stuck or restricted, there is enough slip so nothing gets damaged, and there is just enough friction for it to work. You have to remember the age of these turntables. They have lasted this long, and only just now having the thing replaced. Most that have failed are on the original part still. Not to mention, they are darn cheap and easy to replace :)
So aren't you the Bomb! I have an old 1245 I decided to try to fix (or drop kick outta the shop), and my stupidpickle isn't just worn out - it was completely gone - plus the tonearm thingy was completely dried greasebound. I have a Dual 1258 also I got running. However - I have two 'sort of working' Impro Perpeteum Ebner's' - a 3060 and something else - they are pretty awesome underneath - look like Rube Goldberg inventions. No real electronics - just levers and things. I am pretty sure I'll never get them working perfectly but it's kind of fun to mess with them. I want to build clear plexiglass bases for them - the beauty is all of the moving levers, rockers, springs etc. Thanks for your help!
Hocus Pocus and the stupid pimple is no more a problem! These old automatic DUAL turntable were not considered as desirable audiophile stuff a few years ago. With a new vinyle fever raging on, and prices of Garrard, Thorens soaring madly, these Duals with full auto options are now also on the top list. In 1995, I remember this same model with a decent cover was for sale at the local flee market for only 10€, and a Thorens nearby for 15€!. Some probably regret that time, but with internet, anyone can now appreciate the real value of these built for last machines. These Duals are keepers! When you compare to the low budget Japanese plastic crap some are now trying to sell for much more money it diserves, with missing or broken lids, torn arms, rusty and dusty cells with worn out diamonds, such a turntable is far most qualitative and desirable. However, these mid budget quality turntable are now minimum 150 / 200 € and climbing, as most of the new record players (with MP3 converters) in that budget are pure xxxt. The most recknown vintage models are disputed must have for audiophiles and vintage high end specialists, as these could become a good basis for a minimum tweak, but also basis for dement rebuilding with, say a 1000€ granite or rosewood plinth, a new 1500€ cell, silver wirings and much more...People can pay $$$ even for non working or broken models.
I have a Dual 1246 that needs a new belt but I can't even get the platter off because there is a steel ring locking it in place to the center shaft. Any help would be appreciated...
I have a 1246 when on 33 and 45 it goes past the beginning of record I tried using the adjustment screw under the dual tag where it can be adjusted but it made it worse now it will not go to ten beginning is it something I am missing JRo
Working on a 1264, got everything except repeats the last record in multiplay. Is fine with single play spindle. Even with the service manual, can't figure out how it senses the last record. Is it the spindle itself? Maybe I have a bad one.
Hi my 1019 after finishing the record the tone arm goes back but not going to rest, and then goes back to re start playing again. Any suggestions? Thanks.
my problem is the tonearm does not return. I've changed the pimpel, than I realised that it's not lowering the tonearm when on single. It's raised like Multi mode. It doesnt lower the tonearm when I switch to Single from multi. Its always at the same height. please sir what shall I do?
Hey I have an old magnavox ( roughly 1960 ish ) my arm starts to move and placed itself then picks itself back up and goes back to its resting position. Anyone know why? It also doesn’t move inwards to play anything . It just sits on the record playing the part it’s on over and over again. Any help?
Thank you for playing a little Hocus Pocus with Thijs Van Leer. And for showing me what's probably been wrong with my Dual 1237. The stop selection stopped working many years ago. But it could also just be broken...lol
So I had to go look that word up. Steuerpimpel is the spelling for this little rubber dingus. The German word 'Steuer' means to control or steer from what I found. Nice fix Dave.
You are the best resource for fixing up these beautiful vintage German engineering marvels. Thank you for sharing. One question, where do u source the Steuerpimpel from ? I tried AliExpress but those are pretty bad rubber pieces.
I love Dual record players, I have 3 of them 2x 1019 and 1 x 1009. The nice thing is that you can troubleshoot the mechanism without power as seen here on this video. Try that with a Japanese automatic that have two motors. One motor for the automatic mechanism which makes working on it much more difficult because now you have a cam with switches as well as mechanics. But those are beautiful mechanisms as well, only more difficult to work on.
@@12voltvids if I had to guess as long as it fits the stud it wouldn't matter unless the outside diameter of it would interfere with another part of the mechanism ... I think most times the white portion is like a styrofoam of some sort pretty easy to manipulate it

Where can I get one of those steuerpimples? Thanks for sharing your videos. I am trying to get a Dual 1249 turntable working that I picked up at a garage sale and your videos are a big help!
Interesting. Never had a Dual turntable. Can't understand why they would have moving parts dependant on friction by rubber. Even old VCR's started using gears instead of rubber for mechanisms. I suppose one reason would be to prevent breakage if the arm was immobilized and the operation was engaged.
I think you can fix anything with wires amazing ,I always like dual turn tables ,the g.i.when I was in Germany love them ,I wonder do they still make duals turntables anymore.
Funny how those Duals go for like 100 bucks nowadays. I remember like back in 2007, those where trash and everyone tried to fit those into the garbage can. Especially all idler drive versions.
@Orange OwL Lol overpriced, just like those old battered Technics 1200s that have clearly been abused by drunk DJs... Those go for like 300 bucks as well!
Hello there, your Dual videos have been very helpful as I try to get a gifted 1242 unit running. It currently runs well except that at 45 speed it does not stop spinning at the end of the cycle. i will try to get in touch via email. Thanks you for your videos.
I could not see the movement untill you jiggled the assembly, that was way off lol. I'm supprised there was no glue/paint on that screw, people messing with the setting and not locking it perhaps?.

You can make the stuerpimple with a piece of screen spline used to hold window screens to the frame.

Superb tip. This pimple fix also works for Marantz TT42. Couldn't find a replacement though, used a piece of soft wire insulation.
Screen spline works great.
„Steuerpimpel“ 😂 „Steuer“ like in steering wheel and a tiny Pümpel 🪠 turns into pimpel.
Very helpful video 👍
I have repaired several Dual turntables and I hope to someday work on a 1249 now that I have watched this..
Thanks man, I just inherited a dual 1249 from my granfather and had this issue, just solved with this video.

Encountered this myself too. FWIW if you don't have replacements on hand, the inner (white) material from a piece of coax makes a good substitute.
Good to know. What size coax? Rg58, 59, 6?
