Omg three years I'm doing all sorts of other stretches for back pain, not even realizing how tight my hamstrings are. Today I realized I can barely bend my leg straight at all, did some stretches after watching this video and for the first time in a long time my back feels better. You guys are lifesavers!!!! My hamstrings have probably been the culprit all this time and I didn't even know it. Going to do this every day from now on and see where it takes me.

@ZashiOX Decent actually! My back pain is still there, but significantly better than it had been. I'm not in serious pain all the time anymore, just if I sit too long or do something it doesn't like. But the general pain from just existing...that's gone.

Me currently. I always knew my hamstrings were tight but I didn't realize it was connected to my lower back pain. I constantly feel like I need to pop something in the back of my knee. It's annoying

I injured my lower back two months ago at work, and i've had some terrible nerve pain every since. It seemed like it was only getting worse as the days went by, and I was going to get an MRI done next week. But I was almost completely pain free today after doing these strceches last night, and this morning. I've done lots of hamstring strceches, but none like this. I can't thank you guys enough....and you guys are the best physical therapist on the internet.. ...God bless....and Jesus Christ can fix a broken heart.

I have to stretch my hamstrings several times a day. I do them standing. I start with putting my foot on a step, then a little higher (maybe a second step), then to a chair, and my goal is the counter. It's amazing how one thing (like the hamstring affecting the back) affects another in the body. Since my fusion last month, I can't do any exercise until after my three month followup. The muscles on each side of my spine hurt sooo much. I had that pain before the surgery also. I think it's muscle spasms. After standing a very few minutes, those muscles start hurting and continue until I sit or lay down. At least I don't have the pain and numbness and tingling down both legs anymore. 👍🏻
Thanks for the video..great info! 😁

omg i've been doing hamstring stretches wrong my whole life!!! i had a personal trainer who always tried to flex my toes towards my head while pushing down and i thought that was just how you did it and it always hurt like hell.... now i know why! Lesson learned! Go from the heel. thanks guys! i've been seeing an osteopath for lower back pain and he's been struggling to find the exact cause because my hips are super flexible, and it only happens when i try and bend with straight legs... to stretch my hamstrings and the pain radiates.... well that makes a whole ton of sense. So I've recently developed sciatica issues for the first time in my life.
I'm the kind of person who obsesses over the how and the why so I've been checking my chair, my shoes, my bed, etc.
Anything I've done recently that may have changed my routine. I workout 3-5 times a week so I'm in pretty good shape.
The issue seemed to come and go and I've managed to keep it from getting really bad by adding lumbar support to my chair and doing yoga for low back every night but it still wont go away completely.
This morning I woke up with some moderate pain again and started going through different movements to see which ones caused the most pain.
Whaddaya know, I can't touch my toes anymore. Matter of fact anything that causes my hams to tighten causes a shooting pain in my sciatica.
After 2-3 weeks of everyone telling me it was probably a herniated disc and I just needed to take NSAIDS and try not to aggravate it , I really wish I had found this video sooner.
I also wish I hadn't stopped my nightly stretching routines. -_-
After about 5 minutes of some gentle ham stretching I can already feel a difference.
    Thank you for this video.

    • @markoates1100

Good work Mike, I have had extremely tight hamstrings all my life and never really fixed them, I now have a badly herniated disc and sciatica down my left leg and am on NSAIDS, my effected leg is even tighter than before because my body has been avoiding stretching out my leg to prevent the pain. Please keep on working hard your hamstrings and seating posture, the pain I was in a few months ago was horrendous and I couldn't sit down, only stand or lie on the floor on my front. My sciatica first started about a year ago and I didn't realise what was happening and it only got worse, I only say this to encourage you to start preventing it getting worse so you can avoid my situation. Standing desks and Kneeling chairs might help as well.

Nice guys. Yea, my hammies are very tight and they've been like this for a good part of my life. I'm so used to stretching and working my quads, but never really did the same on the other side. I'm also a little slue footed so I don't know if my lower leg position has something to do with tight hamstrings as well. I've heard putting a pillow between your knees and bending over back straight and trying to straight the knees that way can also stretch the hamstrings somewhat of individuals with slight bow legs.

Tight hamstring is often weak hamstring. When you stretch tight hamstring you can cause more damage.First you got to strenghten it (so receptors will let you stretch it very easy).

I had S-I joint pain for over 2 years. Stretched my hamstrings every day to 90 degrees laying on back with leg/foot extended vertically to s door frame. Mine never got better. BUT, $$$ Then I watched a video that says if your lower back curves in a little and your butt sticks out a little, you should NOT stretch hamstrings. Strengthen hamstrings YES, but do not stretch. I am cured. No SI joint pain since I STOPPED stretching my hamstrings.

This was an eye opener! My question is this: If I test my hamstrings for tightness as shown and I cant hardly bend my ankle (tight gastroc) to put my foot in a 90 degree angle, does that cause back issues?
Either my hams or calves are or both are thigh.
Can a person do a 2 leg hip hinge stretch with flat back as in yoga to safely stretch the hams and protect lower back?
Is downward dog appropriate to safely stretch hams?

I can’t bend my leg backwards in any move to put my foot to near my glutes. My hamstrings will cramp up. I am thinking it’s because of tight hamstrings.

How tight hamstrings affect back pain

I have tight hamstrings for years now never really gave it any thought because it was throwing my back out every now and then. And I would get my girlfriend to walk on it and it would pop back in place😊 Now my back goes out so bad I need a chiropractor appointment. 😢 Definitely time to strengthen my hamstrings, glutes and quads? I think 🤔💬. Yes no??

Hello please help me this is what my MRI says , Impression Multi level degenerative disease most prominent at l4-l5 and l5-s1. The diffusley bulging dis is in contact with l5 and s1 nerve root on the right and left therefore impingement is not ruled out, there is a severe narrowing of the left more then right neural for amen and mild to moderate central spinal stenosis ........ I am looking for the best excerices for myself because I have a whole slew of problems my legs hurt , sciatica hamstring pulls , numbness etc... sittting is the worst for me by far , i use an inversion table and that seems to help a bit but only short term like 5 minutes

physicaltherapyvideo just-watched those videos and ifs funny how you mention laying on your stomach which in fact that is the only position I am comfortable in even when sleeping , my body tends to lean forward when I walk now I know why , riding a bike is the only thing I can do , feeling mild pain . Sitting down is the worse the absolute worse , the pain is very bad in that position.

I started noticing that my hamstrings were getting really tight when i tried bending at the sink.. Should have seen that as a warning.. Coz soon enough i started having back pain and it continued for over a year, doctors gave vitamins and antacids.. I have no idea why😂.. But it has gone now.. I don't know if it was the meds or the stretching i did tgat helped
