  • Our lives get more chaotic when we don't manually organize them. Anxiety, stress, and overwhelm creep in, especially after the holidays. This is a planning process I run through when things get hectic. Use this to take back control of your life when it doesn't feel the same. Note how you feel, identify your habits, plan your week, and get specific on the future you want to create.

I have a big meeting in an hour with a six figure deal/investment on the table. I feel like I’m in a walking movie. From just following you in your emails, your class, etc. gave me the confidence to set this up and it’s actually happening today. I wouldn’t of even had the confidence to set this up or the know how without following you. I appreciate it a lot.

I am really glad I found this channel. I have been living in the stressed/chaotic state you described for several years. Even though I advance in my 9-5 job(s), I always feel in the back of my mind that I am procrastinating (because my goals are not aligned with how I'm spending my day, so the work I'm doing for "Work" is not alleviating the sense of procrastination).
I wish counselors were aware of these types of instructions. It's so simple how you created a layout to reassess your routines. I think this is something everyone needs, especially if their mental health is already struggling. It might not cure depression/anxiety, but it seems really, really important that our daily lives are matching up with our goals/purpose

I think of myself as a fairly organized person, but listening to this video I realize I really need to “clean house” in my brain, and especially clear out some bad habits, like procrastinating. I also tend to sabotage myself (unintentionally) and need to stop making poor decisions…

Great video. A similar solution helped me get on track after years of having a messy mind. I used a notebook to check on my progress everyday by storing down what I did right and at the end of my week I did review. Few lines or few words go a long way. Honestly I did not expect that to work. I thought I would stop at day three, and here I am at week 10. It got me through being sick for 3 weeks and I could go back to acting on my goals after recovery. That usually does not happen so swiftly.
Last week I started to feel sidetracked so I did a mid week review and it helped me get my thoughts clear again. I think the act of writing in itself helps the minds in ways that are not obvious.
It worked wonders for me. I hope other people try it.

One thing I’ve noticed even before this exercise is when I’m writing ( and I’ve been hitting my one woman business for over a year now) I start feeling guilty because I must be neglecting something. I know it comes from years of being told what and when to do things, and mostly, that these people in my life expected me to drop everything to help them. I have been working on “those people “ for a couple years now and so it surprised me to feel those feelings of letting others down. I hope to get rid of that feeling soon altogether:)

Last year I told myself I was going to focus on my mental and physical well-bring (aka fitness). Suffice it to say the best laid plans of mice and men never materialise if you fail to plan. Skip ahead to this year, I am taking actionable steps to achieve my goals. The simplest yet the hardest part is mental; I schedule a daily walk in the morning (10,000 steps per day). Instead of finding excuses not to take the walk, I found an unofficial external accountability partner. I say unofficial accountability partner because the person is unaware that I use them to hold myself accountable; our paths cross in the park so we see each other and merely say "hello." Afterwards, at home I focus on the second goal - creating a sustainable one-person business. On the days that I walk 10,000 steps, I feel energised and can easily concentrate on the second goal instead of seeking distractions. The follow-through component is vital to success.

I felt overwhelmed by the task. I wanted simply to prepare myself, teach the class, and then create a post plan.
Any way, many many hours were lost to my just sitting there staring at nothing bc I was so stressed.

As a Monk that spent most of my time living at meditation centres around Europe and Asia I saw people doing resets all the time. Making a list and writing everything down like Dan suggests is a great idea and really helps bring to light what’s going on in one's life.
At meditation centres people would be forced into a strict schedule that was made to both tie up all their time, but it was also focused on activities that calmed and focused them on their practice.
When you come home after a retreat like that you’ll be clear in a way that is difficult to explain. I wish they’d give something like this method to people when they leave to help bridge the gap between retreat and daily life which in my opinion is one of the weak points in many centres even though there are some that stand out and try to do something about it. Plum Village in France where I spent one to three months every summer comes to mind.
Thanks again for a great video Dan, keep 'em coming!

When you say Vipassana, I'm assuming you mean the Goenka retreats? If so, I've done 25 of those and a few of the 20 day reterats so I have quite a bit of experience with them.
I'd say this is the perfect way for someone starting out who want to try on some serious insight meditation. It's like going on a rollercoaster and you're just going along for the ride and it's one unforgettable ride :) My mind was blown after I did my first one and it does change your perspective on what you're able to do with your mind. Don't be fooled though, you'll want to go home after the 2nd or 3'rd day, but just stick with it since it gets better once you've overcome that obstacle.
Upside is that they're easily accesible, donation based, good vegitarian food and a good solid tradition even though we used to call it the "McDonalds of meditation" since it's basically a franchise with very strict guidelines for their teachers and and staff. I used to see them as vacation time since it's not quite as strict as the Burmese insight meditation centers I visited alot and I always did enjoy the atmosphere there and conversing with fellow meditators on the last day when they lifted the silence.
Downside is that they're quite narrow minded in what they consider to be "The way to meditate" even though they outwards accept all traditions.
Don't think about it, just set of the time and go. I haven't heard a single person who regreted it, except the ones who went home day 2 or 3 which I'd estimate is less than 5% from what I saw.
Good luck and if you do go I'd love to hear how it went :)

Writing everything down sounds very simple and many are not convinced that it helps. But the truth is that the human mind can be very confusing at times, and what you think you're thinking very clearly, when you write it down, you realize that you're not thinking clearly at all, it's just a jumble of vague ideas.
These slimy thoughts you will repeat over and over again. Eventually it will leave you in some subconscious fear of doing nothing and being constantly anxious.

Last week was busy again, and I missed 4 days of writing. Now I'm catching up, and it feels very challenging. It seems like the constant catching up is not sustainable. Is there a specific detail I'm not executing properly? I need help and advice, thank you very much in advance!

I think the pen-on-paper method is very effective when it comes to seeing how much you are fcking up day by day; it just puts it right in front of you. But if you would just stop doing things you know that aren't good for you, then you wouldn't have to do these techniques or different approaches. You can just use common sense and then use discipline to manifest the common sense that you already have.

man I gotta say, I just discovered you through your Life is a Video Game video and frankly, I was expecting a run of the mill self help channel that focuses on the wrong things that pushes hyper productivity.
Instead, I was met with a world shattering viewpoint that I have heard before, but the way that you broke it down and used each point to build upon the next absolutely blew my mind.
So I wrote notes on the whole video and reflected on it for an hour, then said "let me just check out his most recent one real quick" to see if he is consistently like this and within the first few seconds you say "I need a reset when I catch myself thinking back to when times were better often" and I couldn't have described my current state lately any better than that.
I think I will be watching the Life is a Video Game video every night. I am tired of thinking back to my times in college with my perceived perfect gf that I have lost and I am tired of being a slave to pointless RUclips videos that quiet my mind but yield me nothing.
Thank you, truly, and please stay authentic to yourself. You have something that not a single other one of these self help, productivity RUclipsrs has. Can't put the words to it. Authentic, truthful and actionable are close words but not even doing it justice. Picking up a copy of Flow by Mihaly tonight.

Thanks Dan! Enjoyed the shorter format (I also enjoy your long ones) - you are becoming more articulate and better on camera, cool to see.
Also, great exercise for a hard reset, I will try it! I have a little popup every hour for mindfulness, I will tack on tracking what I'm doing/feeling/thinking about.

Any tip on ADHD and ordering the week/life in a way that doesn’t feel like extremely painful (motivation disregulation) nor relies on sheer will power (source of self-harm for neurodivergents). Anyone?

Everything you hate about yourself is actually a loving and protective part of you; even the impulse to escape is a defense mechanism designed to keep you from experiencing too much distress all at once. Exploring these parts of us on a day-to-day basis is the key to bettering ourselves. Thank you Dan, for another great f**** video.
