  • Zephyrhills, Florida, located about twenty miles north of Tampa Bay near the Gulf of Mexico, played an important part in World War II. From January 1943 to the spring of 1944 it was a training base for the Tenth Fighter Squadron. Hundreds of pilots learned to fly the P-40 and P-47 fighter plans which they took to the skies on June 6, 1944 during the D-Day invasion that led to the liberation of Europe. Today, the sole surviving building from their base serves as the town's Military History Museum. The Museum tells the Peashooters story and has artifacts and exhibits from every American war since the Civil War. The museum is totally run by volunteers and is open on Saturdays from ten until 4. There is no charge for admission. The museum is located at the Zephyrhills Airport at 39444 South Avenue.
