- Pack-in video games were a staple of consoles and handhelds in the 80s and 90s, helping create some of the best-selling games ever, and introducing millions of fans to some legendary titles. They also did a great job of showing off the features and gimmicks of the hardware, usually by design. Pack-in games were “packed in” with a console, meaning that new owners had something to play right from the get go, giving players a chance to fall immediately in love with their big, new, expensive purchase. Here are the 10 Best Pack-In Games of All Time.

I *still* can't believe how good Astro's playroom is, two years later... the polish, the music, the graphics, the haptics... hell, even the gimmicky motion control sections were executed flawlessly. The fan service is on another level, too... I found myself getting emotional at the nostalgia bombs.
Absolutely. It's the perfect pack-in game for a new system.
Hell yeah! Such an amazing game and an absolute megatrip down memory lane. I had a shiteating grin on my face all the way through. All three times so far.
@@SpaghettiBeard_ the only game from a modern playstation I care about ironically
I absolutely adored Astro's Playroom, what a joy that was to play and see all the references to PlayStation's history (A really fun Platinum trophy too)
I've finally got my PS5 (it has still been a pain in the bum get one). Astro's Playroom is wonderful. I found it quite emotional, looking back at my 25yrs as a Playstation player.
@@pacman_birthmark I'm right there with you buddy, i love the game :)
Count me as Surprised that Super Mario Bros didn't make the list as well, considering it really did the heavy lifting as a hook to sell people on the viability of game consoles after the crash, and is still the best selling Mario game (not counting Mario Kart 8) Nintendo used ROB to get on the shelves at stores, but Mario is what really sold those consoles.
This. I can’t imagine why what was basically a demo of a Metroid game made the list but super mario bros didn’t. They even mentioned it in the sonic entry! That’s an oversight.
I realize that Nintendo is already prominently featured on this list but how could you leave out Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt packed in with the original NES? At the time I thought that was the greatest video game ever and I couldn't get enough of it.
Yes!!!!
Yeah, that should have been here instead of Metroid on the DS, as that wasn't even a full game, WTF!? You won't include bundle sets offered later on the list, but you'll include a "Demo" over probably the best pack in of all time? Sorry, but I've got to leave a thumbs down on this one.
It was packed in after the launch of the nes. The action set came out in 1987, the original Nintendo came out in 1985. As they said at the beginning of the video, later bundles would not be included.
@@joshhoover2543 Yet Sonic wars included.
Astro’s Playroom is definitely the best tech demo I’ve ever played
Astro's Playroom is easily the best pack-in game of all time. ALL TIME. It won't have the impact of Wii Sports, but I'd have easily paid full price for Astro. Hopefully a longer sequel is on the way.
The Sega Master System also had a maze game actually built into some of them that was accessed from the console start screen.
The Genesis offered Streets of Rage 2 as a pack in at one point. It also had a 'sports pack' that came with 2 controllers and Sports Talk Football '93, with a stadium seat cushion. This is the version I bought and I owned the cushion until 2010. This is technically a 'bundle', I guess, since it was the Genesis 2 model.
My Master System came packed with Alex Kidd in Miracle World...a much better game than those mentioned here.
I would have put Alex Kidd in Miracle World above Hang On on the Master System. While Hang On was good to show an arcade conversion to show the power of the new hardware, Alex Kidd was better as it gave people a reasonable alternative to 8 bit Mario. I will also point out this the exact reason you gave to include Sonic as the Mega Drive pack in.
Astro's playroom is a little masterpiece.
Honestly, am I the only person on Earth who really loves Altered Beast? It may not have aged very well but I sure loved it back in the day.
Weirdly enough I played it for the first time last night after discovering it was the Genesis pack in before sonic. It was actually not that bad! Short but fun enough.
Yes. Yes you are.
I liked the arcade version.
I also still love it haha and I never played it until I was in my 20s so it’s not nostalgia for me
The SEGA Saturn had the absolute best pack in games of all time. No other consoles before or after ever had a better package. You get the Saturn and three.....THREE....games! Daytona USA, Virtua Cop and the awesome Arcade port, Virtua Fighter 2! And I think it also had the Saturn Bootleg demo disc as well.
That wasn’t as much a pack in game as it was a bundle. They did it later in the life of the Saturn to compete with PlayStation without actually lowering the price.
@@tarantinoish Doesn't matter. Saturn still had it best.
Snail Maze was the Master Systems true pick in game, hell it was built into the system & that ear worm of a tune still lives in my head to this day & if Astro's Playroom is on the list so should Snail Maze be. I liked Altered Beast being told to 'rise fwon my gwave' was always worth a chuckle, yes Sonic is better but that doesnt stop the original pack in from being fun, though admitidly I had a SNES & didnt pick up a Mega Drive until later when it was cheap
Legit discovered the Snail Game by accident on a schoolmate's Master System back in the C&VG days. I'll never forget that mini earworm ^.^
Loved Hang On for the Master System- made me glad that I had bought that instead of an NES (which I wound up buying later anyway so...).
You forgot the most famous mascot of all, which was obviously Alex Kidd on the Master System 2.... it just loaded if you didn't have a cartridge inserted (ooh err)
Everyone saying Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt, obviously didn't listen to the stipulation at the beginning of the video, saying that no 'Bundle' consoles would be on this list. Super Mario Bros. and Duck Hunt both have their own black box games that came out before the bundle. The original NES came with R.O.B., Gyromite, and Duck Hunt as pack in games as the Deluxe Set.
Demo Disc 1 was absolutely brilliant. Stretching the definition? Maybe
Super Mario World continues to be one of my favorite games ever.
Something about it transcends gaming. It's part of my childhood, and sharing it with the next generation, it continued into my adulthood in a really cool way.
For the people arguing on the Master System (the first version at least) over what build in game should be on this list, I would say all of them. They where all on the system. You could change the game by turning a screw inside the system. A little fun fact.
Surprised Super Mario for the NES didn't make the cut. Others in the series wound up better, but it may have been the most important. It was a system seller at a time when the industry desperately needed systems to be sold. Also came with Duck Hunt, which, meh.
My personal favorite was Combat for the Atari 2600, which is one of the few 2600 games that is still plenty of fun today. That game was excellent.
Bloody insane that they didn't give Super Mario Bros a nod. It revolutionized level design, introduced the use of more sophisticated chip-tune music to build an atmosphere without sacrificing any ear worm hooks, and was, by far, the best game you could find on a standard, unenhanced Nintendo cart.
Not to mention, it was one of the rare times that a popular arcade game was better in the home version. (And also a rare example of a popular arcade game using home console hardware.)
I love Pole Position 2 - my childhood is Atari, but none of the games in that series even came close to the cultural impact and depth of play that Super Mario Bros offered.
It also made Donkey Kong and Pitfall - the previous kings of platforming games - completely obsolete.
But what can you expect from Triple Jump? They aren't any more convincing when they try to sound like they know anything about the ZX Spectrum, either.
That was a bundle set.
Thank you for giving me a distraction while going through a very hard time in life. I appreciate all of you
Wii Sports Golf is timeless and will never get old.
Pole Position was so popular back in the 80's, that it got its own Saturday morning cartoon.
Alex Kidd with the Master System II
The car in pole position 2 hit a top speed of 310mph for a second 😆
Everything else made sense and this was a good list but you need to say why the video game that saved the industry was not included. Why was Super Mario Bros not on this list?
That was a bundle set.
Watching this with subtitles offered so many bonus jokes, lol.
No Alex Kidd in Miracle World from the Master System? ☹️
So I don't know if this was something that was offered only in the USA but the OG Xbox had a double game pack in it that had Sega GT 2002 and Jet Set Radio Future. That disc set never left my collection for the whole time that I had that console.
1:04 tfw you're Ben from TripleJump
Hold On was literally a ripoff of NES game Rad Racer, with the cars swapped out for motorbikes. Also, the Sega Master System came with a game that was programmed into the console in a bad version of PacMan
Sewer Shark has got to be number one. It isn’t? Whhhhaaaattttt? I declare Shenanigans on this list.
Tetris over Super Mario World or even Super Mario Bros. on the NES (which didn't even make this list), really?! Super Mario World is the greatest video game of all-time. Don't believe me? Play it again and see how much fun it still is.
SMB was a bundle set, so it doesn't make the list.
@@StageRight123 Yeah you're right but there's a fine line between a pack-in and a bundle and the NES Action Set (with SMB and Duck Hunt) kinda rides that line (just like the Sega Master System).
was Super Mario not a pack-in in Europe or something?
It was a bundle set.
No Alex Kidd in Miracle World for the SEGA Master System? 😲😲😲😲😲
Woa woa woa master system would be snail maze game!!
And it would be no,1 on your list
Er, with my Master System UK i got Alex kid pre-installed in the console?
Wii Sports is a gem. Sadly, Switch Sports couldn't fill these gigantic shoes.
I really enjoyed Wii Sports Resort. Setting everything on Wuhu Island really gave it a feel like you were on vacation.
Absolute best bundle in...the Maze game hidden in the master system. Start the console without a game and press start on the controller and boom based ever created maze game is yours
Loved Astro's!
Surprised you ranked an evercade pack in over super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt.
Good list.
I played so so much Hang On and Safari Hunt
I'm not there, yet, but surely Sonic is No. 1?
nope and I can't imagine anyone thinking what got #1 is unwarranted
Wait. Golf is a sport? Huh, who knew?
Going on the record here saying the Master System was better than the Mega Drive (Genesis)
I will have no Gex slander!
Combat for the Atari 2600 deserved, at least, a honorable mention...and no Super Mario Bross/Duckhunt??? Seriously?
SMB/DH -> Bundle set.
Pack in games are the best.
Specifically the ones that Show off the special features of the console, something like wii sports could never be properly played on anything but the Wii, and not to mention that their amazing games!
Shardfall is going to be an interesting pack in game for the upcoming quell console!
I haven’t watched yet, but I bet #1 is either Wii Sports or Super Mario World.....
Tetris? That a good game, but not a better pack-in game than Wii Sports and definitely not better than Super Mario World.....
First time in my life I've heard of Evercade. But I'm not British.
I'm not British and evercade rules
Evercade is pretty popular amongst the gaming community here in the US.
Nintendo Land is better than at least half of these games in the video. Probably the single best use of the Wii U's many strange features.
Wasn't Super Mario 64 a pack-in game?
9:07 Nah, you're not. We all know that you never even made it that far in SMW in the first place. ^^
I mean it’s Tetris right?
Cybermorph?
Wait a minute? Is this a joke? How in the world is super Mario bros not number 1? The list was perfect till y’all botched it at the end
Bundle set. SMB released before that bundle set.
Super Mario Brothers sold the NES and ended the video game crash. Shame on you
How the fuck you gonna diss Super Mario/Duck Hunt?
Bundle sets don't belong on the list, as pointed out at the beginning of the video.
@@StageRight123 most consider Super Mario/Duck Hunt as a pack in.
nice
Absolutely confusing title smh...
@matt bruh, after watching the vid, i'm still a lil confused.
@@retromannyli 🤣🤣🤣

What do you mean ‘jam if you’re british’? You should know that’s it’s not really a thing here. And stop pandering to the Americans.
