- Football fever is gripping the world once again, and the beautiful game is impassioning sports fans all over the world. Even we here at TripleJump have been known to sit in front of the TV during international games, yelling such phrases as “why didn't you pass it?” and “that was never a penalty” as if our impotent wailing could affect a football match taking place on the other side of the world. This time, however, we thought we'd get even more involved, and bring you a footie-themed list to keep you entertained during those empty hours between matches. You're very welcome. As the most popular sport in the world, football has been well-represented on consoles and computers over the years. From the early days of Sensible Soccer and FIFA, to the present day of … well, just FIFA really, let's be honest, kids and adults alike have spent countless hours in front of their TV screens, coaxing digital men to kick digital balls into digital goals. Another interesting entry, though it might have to be a wildcard entry, would be FIFA 2009 (I think...) specifically for the Wii having a mode where you can play with professional footballers' Mii characters. Seeing Miis slide tackling and tumbling around the pitch was hilarious.
Also for consideration: Backyard Soccer. Soccer game with kids (including one in a wheelchair) and kid versions of famous MLS players at the time. (Made for kids, obviously, but still fun) Had full seasons to play through, if I remember right.
I had Urban Freestyle Soccer on GameCube and it was a little one dimensional but each team had an awesome themed home pitch, you could king hit players off the ball, and do some pretty wild skill moves. Super underrated game
I got Sega Soccer Slam for christmas when my parents couldn't find Star Wars Battle Front 2, I loved it, played it for months
SEGA Soccer Slam was an incredible hidden gem, picked it up from a local corner shop and played it more than any edition of FIFA.

First footie game I ever played was World Cup Italia 90 for the Mega Drive, I remember struggling to master it but tbf I was only 5 or 6 at the time and I was also struggling to master tying my shoes so not sure how difficult it actually was 😂

Where i live (also in Europe), Captain Tsubasa was also very popular anime.
Tecmo probably didn't bother, If the game was handled by Bandai, I think they would keep the licensing at least for Europe.
I love the inazuma eleven series. I wish you would stream it, but since it's a ds game and takes quite some time to finish it will probably never happen.
I was expecting “Kunio-kun's Nekketsu Soccer League” among the titles too. Unfortunately you haven’t mentioned it. In my opinion this by far beats most of these games in many terms. A strangely fun game. I highly recommend trying it
As soon as I saw the title of this video, my first thought was "Here we go, sports time!"
You probably never heard of it but Pet Soccer was a strange and good game too. It was released on 2002.
I was concerned you guys would not mention Mega Man Soccer. I didn't have an SNES growing up here in Brazil but I had many friends who did and Mega Man Soccer was a really popular conversation topic in school back then.

Mega Man Soccer brings back some horrible memories. Back in the days of video game rentals, I rented it and then we got a blizzard and we got snowed it for a week. I had nothing else to play but Mega Man Soccer.

Love seeing games I reviewed way back when. Inazuma 11 was a fun little one... I didn't particularly LOVE it by any means, but it was a nice distraction from standard RPGs and standard sports titles.

There was a PS1 football game that teams had "specials". China could literally build a wall, stopping every attack. It was really fun
The Redcard cover art features neither Vinnie Jones or Ryan Giggs - even I, a non-footballer can see that it's quite clearly neither of them. 😛 It does however look like a recreation of a famous Vinnie Jones incident that did occur.
And the guy getting his nuts crushed in the original was no 'generic footballer', it was Gazza himself!

@@facundopetrolo1999 hahaha, glad someone recognize those game, and btw the most OP teams were Germany and Saudi Arabia, both of them have their unique skill especially the goalkeeper, whatever super shot the opponent takes the GK will catch it easily hahahaha
I still have fond memories of soccer brawl. It looked similar to mega man soccer but the cyborg characters were bigger and each possessed a unique shot and players could be knocked down by a ball of fire.
The inazuna eleven franchise deserves more love in English speaking territories, such a great series of RPGs

Bit dissapointed that nintendo world cup for the nes was not on the list.
You could play on gras, concreat ,ice or gravel and every surface had a diffrent impact on the players.
If you tackeld a player enough times he would be put out until a goal was scored.
Aside from that every team had a their own super shot exept from the us were almost every player had their own version.
Still have my copy and play with friends from time to time...

Tsubasa just best. That's why it's still here. But at least 1 SNES game is bad that's why they returnd to roots in ps2 and 2020 games.

My couple of nuggets regarding footy games would be
1) There is/was a Japanese SNES (yes.. Super Famicom. whatever..) game that the mists of time have wiped the name of the game from my memory. Which had a bizarre English voiced match commentary. Who uttered the classic line at the end of the match. "TIMES OOP!" Can anyone help me with the name? I didn't imagine it I swear!
2) On the original International Superstar Soccer (for the Super Famicom in my case 'Perfect Eleven.') There was a way to almost guarantee a player being sent off. iirc it involved walloping the opposing goalie when he was taking a goal kick? Something like that.
Well... I got to thinking, "how many players from my team could I get sent off in a match?" Took me a few practice runs, but I subsequently discovered the answer is in fact 10. Wanna know why? Because once your 10th blokey gets sent off, the other team will inevitably score. And the game promptly locks up because you don't have 2 players left to take the resulting kick off. Obviously the game creators didn't anticipate anyone being stupid enough to see what would happen in such a case.
In the real world, a match is abandoned if a team gets 5 players sent off. You'd think they'd have factored that in.
I remember that game too, the original iss, there was also a guaranteed way to beat any man, you'd run at them, then do the step over flick the ball trick where it goes up the player's back and over their head. The opposition player would always try to head the ball in the middle of this trick, but could never intercept it, so you end up with the ball back at your feet and the guy is 2 metres behind you, giving you a free run past him. Worked every time, and made the game ridiculously easy. I could win games 20-0 on the hardest level, and I'm not that brilliant at video games.

Red Card was a Great Game. Most of Midway Action Sports Games were Great. Too Bad they don't make any.
