  • Hiked 8 miles in the rain to the ghost town of MoNte Cristo off of the mountain loop highway. This hike is so underrated, and is a must see for any local history buff. Easy trail, beautiful woods, mountain views, and a ghost town, what more do you need?!

Looks alot different than when I was there in 1968. We could drive right into town then or cross the old railroad trestle above town. Our group found a big gold nugget under a rail tie in the justice mine.

You amaze me. You are a hiking machine. Trying to figure out how you can do 20 miles in a day. I think the reason you are always hiking solo is nobody can keep up with you. I’m an old man now but back in the 70’s before you were born you could drive all the way to the town before the bridge and road were washed out I think in the early 80’s. The hike at that time was to Gothic Basin where the actually mining for gold was done. The miners left behind a lot of equipment like pumps and cables all discarded in the 0:02 stream. Enjoy your videos much. Bring back old memories. Thanks

They quit mining for two reasons. One they couldn't keep the railroad in one piece because of constant washouts and the other was the amount of arsenic in the ore.

Most of the town was still there in 1968 but there was a mean old bastard that ran the town and wanted to charge us just for walking through it. The pelton wheel and generator were still in use then.

I found the coolest swirly rock up at Monte Cristo, weighs about 20 pounds. I carried it all the way home, it's the centerpiece of my rock collection.

Good video, but they were not old houses you had seen. Those are long gone. My cabin was the one with the signs. Not saying to say away, check it out all you want. It was built in 1926 for Garda Fogg, with remnants from the old town. If you ever see the door open, stop by!

Good Lord, they make you WALK there now, and then the most outstanding buildings aren't there anymore? From what I see there's just a random collection of shacks left now. But of course I was there 60 years ago. The good stuff was still standing… historic buildings were much more interesting than the scattered remains you can visit now… why didn't the Park service keep it up? 🤦‍♀️😖🤦‍♀️ Are there no longer Office buildings and saloons etc. that you can go into? What a shame. Another piece of history lost…
