It's scary how good Gilels was. Unbelievable.

Наверное все дело в хорошем инструменте рояль звучит по-другому чем у мацуева
Лучшего звука, большей глубины, более ясного, светлого и скорбного самоотрешения, чем у позднего Гилельса, я не слышал.

Emil is so touched by music he plays and you can witness how his spirit rose. When he plays it is goes beyond physical and you can see it vividely that he is not playing with fingers and mind but with something else. Emil Gilel obviosely has highly developed Affatus and I find he is so close to Love here

The way he made the piano sing here is nothing short of a miracle. With the density of notes, as with all Rachmaninov, to have such a clean singing lines as Gilels have produced require unblelievable amount of control.

Subjective but I can't disagree. It is, of course, a matter of one personal taste and what hits the sweet spot for each individual. This hits that spot for me like a hammer!

On October 12, 1978, I attended a recital by Gilels in Ann Arbor, Michigan - the concert icluded works by Schumann, Brahms, Scriabin and Ravel - Gilels ended the evening with the g-minor Prelude by Rachmaninov and this Bach-Siloti Prelude - a night I remember to this day, over 38 years later...

Never thought this piece could sound as convincing on piano as it does here. It proves the unique cantabile these Soviet giants such as Gilels, Richter and Ashkenazy possessed.
Yes indeed. Giles and Richter in particular were remarkable and I think gave Rachmaninov a nobility that is often times lacking.
There is so much acceptance in this music. A feeling of relenting perhaps .

EGOR SHCHERBAKOV это вообще лучшее исполнение вокализа. Певицы поют абсолютно безвкусно. Ни одна певица пока не обладала такой глубиной души и культурой. Увы.

Ahh the trills!! Gilels' trills always bring inspiration.
The virtuosity is so evident in things as subtle as the trill with the 4th finger at the end. Sublime. Such beautiful phrasing.

Рахманинов был вычеркнут из «реестров» важных артистов России после его уезда в Америку. Там всё наоборот: все знают Рахманинова, но мало кто слышал о Гилелсе. Он дал концерты там только один раз, в отличие от Рихтера, кто более там известен.

@@stonefireice6058 никем Рахманинов не вычеркнут. Его памятник стоит в самом центре Москвы, на Страстном бульваре. Он один из величайших русских композиторов и пианистов.

Papa_mia nope they’re golden age for a reason! They have much more depth of color, pianos today are so tinny and metallic sounding
He does not just play this music - he lives this music, even when there is no sound at the end when the hall explodes with applause, his feelings are visible on his face, that he is still experiencing this music, these emotions, God bless his soul! His soul is beautiful!

Recollections of Gilels: In 1959 or early 1960s, in London at the RFH, I heard piano trios played by Gilels, Kogan and Rostropovich. A string broke on Rostropovich's cello, with a crack like a bullet, but Gilels continued with a smile, to see how long Rostropovich could improvise on the remaining strings. On one occasion, the RFH management announced that one of the advertised Beethoven trios could not be played because otherwise the concert would last too long. But when the official concert was over, Gilels and the others played the forbidden trio as an encore. Those were the days.
This is simply beautiful. I heard Gilels live for the first time when he played at Constitution Hall in DC in 1955.

While learning to play this piece (after a fashion), I've listened to this amazing performance thousands of times, and it still brings tears to my eyes every time.

La plus belle interpretation de vocalise que j ai jamais écouté .la sensibilité de l’interpretation, la mélodie qui ressort de la main droite et de la main gauche , le juste dosage de la force des doigts sur le clavier c est juste incroyable. Gilels joue a un niveau jamais atteint.
