United Radio...back in the '80's, I sent them an original FM stereo radio out of a Buick because only one side of the stereo worked. They turned it around in a week and the UPS cost more than the repair! Good people!
My wife has a 2001 F250 with the same dinging and it's been doing it for 10+ years. 4 sets of 5 dings every 20 minutes. Thanks for the video. Time to pull the cluster.
You know you’ve watched a lot of SMA when you and Mr. O sing “Real American people” unknowingly at the same time. Today we salute you, mister cluster fixer upper guy.
I grew up in Syracuse and was a TV service Tech back in the 70s as a teenager and I worked my way through college in a TV Shop (Shavers TV). When Sony started making the Trinitron TV's, they were a radically different design from conventional TV sets like the RCA and Zenith. United Radio is where we would send the Sonys with problems we couldn't run down, and they also did Police radio repairs/installs. It's good to hear they're doing well, as all the TV shops went out of business in the mid 80s because of cheap and "disposable" TVs. It was "Adapt or die" and United Radio was one of the few that found a new niche with automotive electronics.
My dad's shop definitely felt the sting of the new disposable TVs. He ran that place for 30 years with his brother and nephews, fixing literally almost every TV and other small appliance in our town by the end of it. Once TVs became cheap and it got down to just replacing boards instead of diagnosing components, people didn't care and would junk them or give them away rather than repair. By that point, I had graduated community college for Electronics Engineering, suddenly realizing there wasn't any money in it anymore. So, now I'm an apprentice mechanic with a thorough electronics background. But of course now even cars are starting to get to that same spot with "don't fix it" components you just swap out. Hell, dealerships don't even open transmissions for the most part, let alone electronic components. So it's definitely refreshing to see that some shops still would rather fix an existing component than install new.
The first Trinitron TV's were truly much better than the rest of the pack. The Trinitron tube was amazing. Then, Sony began to offer less expensive models that only carried the SONY name on them, complete junk they were. Then after a decade or so they came back with XBR and then Bravia to attempt a recovery from abusing the Sony Trinitron reputation. Ever since that time, we've never purchased another Sony TV.
Well done, to isolate the problem to the cluster so fast. It's wild that someone would tinker around with something like that cluster without knowing what they are doing. I would NEVER do that. (😉)
I worked at United Radio in Syracuse back in the early 90s, when they still repaired consumer electronics. It was a great company then, glad to see they're still in Business and still doing a good job.
I’ve had a lot of luck with United Radio with instrument cluster, radio, and climate control repairs. They do great work - and I agree, nice having the tech talk to you on the phone about the repair. Nice work on the Ford! That dinger would have driven me crazy. I’m still thankful I sold my 04 F150.
It would be nice to see more “ Fix It”. Repair shops return as an option. The typical thinking over past years has been the new replacement part only cost $ 50.00 more than fixing the failed OG so buy the replacement. But now the replacement parts often cost more but are also cheap junk garbage compared to the OEM. 3 - 4 decades of throw away parts has proven there is a much higher cost than just dollars and cents.
Thanks again to United Radio...a good SMA repair. Good thing, lucky for the owner, that this cluster was sent in vs fixed with a solder joint in the shop as there was much more wrong than suspected inside the cluster. So, the customer actually got more for his money on the cluster repair mainly because the shop, SMA, used a good reliable automotive cluster repair company.
So the vehicles real have a cluster f... issue going on with them🤣. And Eric as someone who has been watching your channel for years don't be hard on yourself you have forgotten more knowledge than I've ever learnt in my life time. You sir a fantastic mechanic.
Nice to see a Ford Probe still on the road! Bought one in 1992 and am convinced I'd still have it to this day if it wasn't totaled while parked (227K w/original clutch). . . Long story. Love your videos!
Haha that's funny I don't think he has a NY accent! Not like Keith anyway, but maybe I've been watching him for too many years now (of course here in Australia we don't have an accent!) 😐
Good life lesson Eric. You do have to know your limitations, because if you don't your limitations will sure as hell let you know, and usually not in a good way! I tried repairing a cluster on an older vehicle in my younger day. I figured how hard could it be, buy the most likely part per the various forums, solder it on & Bob's your uncle. Turns out I mustn't have an uncle Bob, because it didn't work. I was better off paying someone.
I've had several clusters repaired by United Radio over the years. Probably 30 years ago I had a Chevy Blazer that had a digital dash cluster that failed. They fixed it up and shipped it back to me in no time at all. At that time I lived east of Albany. Now I'm in Syracuse and drive right by United Radio an average of once a week. For a few decades no they've been a factory authorized repair center for GM, Ford, Chrysler and many other auto manufacturers. Cold solder joints in those clusters are pretty common too.
It's good that there are still people around that can do board level repair like that. I'm in Australia and ended up sending the motherboard of my Synology NAS to a guy in Chicago for him to fix a known defect. The manufacturer is only interesting in selling you a new box.
Followed the link from the previous video to United Radio and gave them a call this morning. Mentioned that SMA recommended them...they laughed and said they were getting traffic because of a certain Mr. Eric O. I'll be sending them a TIPM from my Ram 1500 and an instrument cluster from my Chrysler 300. Thank you Sir!
Nothing like experience... and remembering having dealt with this kind of issue before... Funny, you still followed your path of diagnostic protocol... you are a skilled fellow. I'm not a mechanic... but I'm scaring myself because I'm learning;) Stay Well
That's a pretty good service you guys have there. Here in UK we have a company called BBA reman and they do exact same thing plus also does abs pump modules and other modules also. I don't know how expensive United radio is but ours is really inexpensive and yet we still have people doing the "DIY" repair and won't work right like your customer's one wasn't. Great diagnosis Eric and was a awesome 2 part video 👋🇬🇧
Absolutely great diagnosis great shout out to a good company who apparently stands behind what they do very rare hope they keep it up.. Happy customer is a good night sleep 😁.
At the shop I’m at we’ve got a mom and pop cluster repair shop less than a mile away, and they’ve been there for like 25 years, fantastic family business that really know their stuff with clusters
Just finished a 96 S10 blazer that was donated to my home church . I absolutely love 4.3,. There's so many aftermarket parts available. In a weekend and a few hundred bucks, you'd never know it's not a 350.
It's so important to have the contacts that you have in your line of work. It sure makes jobs like this much easier. Up the great work and please stay safe and healthy.👍
I use to use Eddie's Radio in South Florida now united 30+ yrs. ago.. they were always great and good prices. Appreciate the reminder/ recommendation. and S.M.A. enjoy it
Another cool video. Yesss, we been getting our monsoon rains here in Central New Mexico. And we needed it too. But still Not enough. Just keep up the knowledgeable videos coming in..
Awesome video Eric as always! I can imagine running even just a simple google search for product pattern problems for that year make model will have the Cluster listed in the top five issues. Hope your having a fantastic week and looking forward to seeing your next video brother!
You’re so right about Ford instrument panels going wonky. But not just limited to the F150s. I owned a 2008 Taurus with the same issue and when I took it into the dealership to get it repair they told me instrument panel issues were all too common
If I remember correctly the 2nd generation Ford Probe sourced both their engines from Mazda. Probably why there is aftermarket valve covers because Mazda used that powertrain in about half their line up. Mid 2000s mustangs had clusters that also sucked. Always enjoy your videos.
Exact the 2nd gen Ford Probe had the same V6 2.5L engine or the 4 cyl engine than the Mazda MX-6 and Mazda 626. There was a V6 1.8L too with similar design for the MX-3, the 2.5L V6 was a common swap in the MX-3.
I got a F 150 1999 Got change the whole Dash cause the plastic turned to brittle glass that can kill sharp as razor blades when it breaks I have been cut by it crazy they build crap like this! You did Nice work for sure!
Hey Eric O, Thank you for the information about United Radio. I have a 1992 Isuzu Rodeo with the top of the line radio factory installed. There are a few problems with it. Now I know where to get it repaired. To me it is worth getting it repaired because it has phenomenal FM tuner. Thanks again for the great content. I find your videos extremely informative and entertaining. As always keep up the good work. Guy Franks
Hi Eric, yes I got them from you and yes the service is excellent. Little expensive but who cares if you do a good job. I am an electronics engineer but I have no diagrams or circuit description and their service is excellent as I have said. So as you say don't touch, send it in and pay their bill. job done.
Eric, I've been living in southern California all my life. We don't see rain often. The few days of the year it does rain people panic, They act like it's the end of the world, trying not to get wet rushing to their homes at the same time causing many car accidents, it's crazy here. You got a wheezy chuckle outta me!
Dang that cluster looks brand new! Those guys at United Radio always seem to hit it out of the park with their repairs.
In this age of "throw away and replace," it's good to know someone is still going real repairs.
The folks in the shop that do the dash repairs, they are a vanishing breed. Thanks for being real UNITED RADIO , and SMAR
