I read the book years ago. Harold Shucart was my cousin’s father-in-law. Hannah’s daughter was speaking at a local Temple and she ended up connecting with my cousin’s husband who was Harold’s son. They kept in touch after that.

Hanna Bloch Benjamin Kohner, what a lovely young woman! I just read her book about two weeks ago, so it's a real treat to see this episode. Thanks so much for posting it. Extremely touching. I find this interview absolutely astounding. The interviewer is talking about such earth shattering issues as the holocaust as if it was like Hanna had a tough time being bullied at school!!!. You can tell by the way Hanna and her friend look at each other when the interviewer describes the death camps that they experienced a truly horrific time. Yet its dealt with in such an insipid superficial manner by the interviewer. It also interesting that the interviewer refers to her as 'Non Aryan' as being Jewish was still not greatly accepted in 1950s American. This is a really illuminating program about how little the west understood or cared the horrors of the holocaust in the 50s.
The Nazi's exterminated other Non-Ayrians as well as the Jews. Also, as a daughter of a WW2 vet whose duty inclused liberating one of the death camps, I can assure you many of generation became well aware of many of the realities surrounding that horrid SOCIALIST regime. I wish I felt more of today's youth had an effing clue what the slurs they sling so recklessly actually mean, or that they are falling for much of the same type of fascistic hatred.

Television at that time was a strange beat but there is something to be said of the courage of the shows producers (both jewish) to be the first to broadcast a survivors story. Unfortunately, most storytelling at that time were thoroughly sanitized. But it almost appear that Hannah sanitizes her own story which I think you would find with many survivors back then. They either were afraid to tell their story in full and in other cases were busy trying to rebuild their shattered lives.

This is the first tv showing of a holocaust survivor, and the way they go about this is so shocking for today. At the time, I think they wanted to keep it nice and chipper, since thats how things were in the 50s.

There was a dignity and a sense of surviving and going on in the general make up of this other generation. I knew a woman when I was in college, who I learned had went through a similar travail. I was shocked that she downplayed it as much as she did, but again it was part of her survival. Today too many people carry on about comparatively little, while the person next to them may suffer in silence. A Doonesbury cartoon several years summed it up for me. Two explorers are in the wilderness, and one is screaming "Eek! Murray! A spider!" Meanwhile, poor Murray can't respond because he has a python wrapped around his neck! Hanna and her fellow survivors in this show had pythons around their necks...and God bless the producer and the late Ralph Edwards who brought her story to the public (when other shows WOULD have just done the story of then popular, movie star Jeffrey Hunter. )

I have to read the book for school and I hate to admit(and I feel really offensive saying it) but, I've found the beginning boring and it's not the type of book I'm able to just read, so I decided to try an find this, and I'm so glad I did. Hanna and Walter's story is not at all boring(I still and read the book as it's still nonfiction) and is in fact extremely touching and made me feel happy, and also pissed off again at Hitler because he's a super asshole, but I'm so glad they were able to find happiness. Also thank you for posting this, you're a lifesaver.

Excruciating and painful in every way.............most survivors hadn't even begun the process of talking about their past experience and survival in the 1950's. You could see the torment in their eyes and body language.
