It's insane that they made a game completely surrounding the day to day life of a cat and neutered the platforming mechanics to remove challenge turning it into a walking simulator.
Do you have any idea how tedious it would be to try and jump onto the tiny platform like handrails without lock on!? Yeah that would have been so much fun, trying to land on tiny ledges and railing and missing most of the time.
Yeah, I thought it was going to be a cool platformer with a cat, and it's all automatic. I genuinely got sad seeing that all it takes is some virtual cats meowing or playing with one another to get praise, but hey, that's the amazing gaming industry now: poor games, microtransactions, planned DLC after 1-2 months of release, and shamelessly monetising everything possible.
I don’t even like the game because u play as a cat, or because the challenges. I like it mostly because the design and artwork of the game. Like I was astonished of the first area (Inside The wall)
This is what I've been saying the first few days it was released. Everyone bashed me for being a cat-hater. But the thing is, I love cats. And I couldn't have been more bored playing this game.
Yea,....I was into it for 20 minutes. However, once the novelty wore off and I realized all that was left was a paper-thin plot with barely existent motivation with repetitious simplistic platforming? All the purring and allure of pushing things off the counter in the world couldn't keep me invested. I'm very happy to get a refund. Played the first 20 minutes, will watch the ending on youtube.....and nothing of value will be lost. Fyi, I had this game in mind for many months, but it's only 3 out of 5.
I'd rather take a trip to the dentist and get a few of my teeth pulled than have to trudge through this dumpster fire. But this applies to almost every single Sony & MS exclusive. :P

I had this game on my favorites on Steam at the first opportunity so I wouldn't miss the release date. However, I'm not going to butter this game up just because I was looking forward to it.

I think the only thing that made this game so beloved is the fact that you control a cat. So many people like cats and cute things. But other than that it's a very generic and simple game.
You are right It's a cat game. But also it looks good and it has ok music. And make you stress down a little. Sleeping on one spot for 1 h(trofé) wasen't a problem at all because everything was so nice.

Not every game needs complex mechanics, in fact I wish less games did, real life is complex enough for me, haha. The thing is, cats are simple beings to begin with, so it's.. quite immersive to have a simplistic gameplay loop in cat game.
@@p0ltergeisha I really don't get this complaint from her. Everybody can have their own opinions but I don't think this game was ever meant to be difficult. It was always meant to be an experience before being a game. It just so happens that it has enough gameplay in it to keep the player engaged with the gameplay rather than the world but the gameplay is only really there to just drive you into this world. It was a very relaxing game for what it was. I like hard games, I raid in MMOs on hardest content but sometimes you just need a change of pace and I think Stray delivered that masterfully. If there are any complains to be had from me then it would be the clunky jump mechanics though they did their job well enough and probably it would be nice to have 1 more major arc to the story before the wrap up to maybe get the 'Elite' robots view on the world. Like first we started in slums, then we moved up to one upper level then I wanted to see the 'higher' class of robots but the game wrapped up early.

Like she said, if you are someone relatively new to gaming, a young kid, and/or a cat fanatic, this game is for you. If you enjoy games that have more complexity and challenge, then you're probably not going to enjoy the game. Describing the game as unchallenging and simple are only negative descriptions if you're looking for complexity and challenge. These kinds of reviews help to match the right players with the right games.
I love cats, but my problem with this game was that I didn’t actually feel like a cat. The way the cat was able to talk and understand humans and do “human things” made it feel more like a “human brain inside a cat” game. The only good part was the beginning, when there was no talking and you had to use pure instinct to navigate the environment.

I wouldn't expect a game where you control a cat to 'not' be like a "human brain inside of a cat" game, but it's an argument that can be made. I think it's just the way she formulated her comment that made it come over differently.
It seems like a fun, short, one-time game, but people just cannot shut up about it, like it's a new game messiah or sth. I'm just gonna wait a year or two to play it when hype will die out.

Just got done playing Elden Ring for 430 hours. Since I have PS plus extra, was able to play this for free. Can't say I was disappointed. It was kind of cute, kind of funny, mostly relaxing after my arduous journey to become a platinum Elden Lord. Not every game needs to kick your ass every inch of the way and hope you fail. Sometimes you need a break from that.
Exactly 💯 This is something a lot of people don't realise, they treat everything as if it's meant to be the next God of War or from software game, as if it's meant to have fast paced combat with lots of strategy. Games like this exist to let you take a break from all that, just to sit back and relax, and I feel like that's where its getting its decent reviews from, people are glad we have a games like this. And on top of all that, it's only 25 bucks, some games like this go up to 60, and we also have to note this is the first game by a brand new development company
Lol, this game will kick arse if you go for Platnium Trophy cause it isn't easy at all. One has you avoiding Zurks catching you during an alley way chase that is luck based. The other difficult one is for completing the game in under 2 hours. That leaves you with no room for error as a good run will leave 10-15 minutes to spare. I just got Platnium and it took me 3 playthrough cause I was 5 minutes too late on my speedrun playthrough.
PS Plus Extra costs money I agree the game is fine but it had misleading marketing. They had you believe it was an action game and a platformer and a cat simulator of sorts when none of that is true

it's just a glorified walking sim with some verticality...you hit the nail right on the head. It's one of those games that'll be hyper popular for a couple of months and then be mostly forgotten. I like a lot of the setting and details in this game even if I don't like cats but I don't think I'd ever buy it knowing the game play lacks actual platforming. I've never been a fan of games that remove challenge from traversing by making everything basically canned animation button presses.

I cant understand the love this game is getting. I got this game refunded as its one of the most disapointing games ive played. I kept waiting for the game to kick in. Its a totally linear walking simulator, its not a puzzler at all. PS. I love cats.
I would happily pay 30 dollars for a walking simulator with a compelling narrative (Soma, Firewatch, Edith Finch all come to mind) but Stray doesn't even have that. Really glad I didn't buy this game and only played it as part of ps plus premium. I'd want a refund too.

I love cats and was excited about this but the fact that you play as a cat is irrelevant, the main character is actually the robot companion, you could be controlling a dog and nothing would change either from a plot or gameplay perspective since all the cat behavior is through prompts.

Nier is not a good game, it would have been better as a movie, fighting is just button mashing, you can do some cool shit but button mashing is the best option, side quests and open world are completely inconsequential to the story. I completed 2/3 of quests as 2B and then realised they are totally useless so i just did main missions. Everyone likes the game just because it made them feel sad for robots and think about philosophy a bit, story is nice but gameplay is utter garbage. 5/10 game for me because 50% of the game is playing the game which is more boring than reading lady robots thoughts about Jean Paul.

The game is about the story not the game play. It's about the worldbuilding, it's basically What became of Edith Finch style game. And I loved it for that. The fact that people are complaining about the gameplay is like being mad because Sims isn't an FPS. You don't have to like the game, if we all liked the same thing, vanilla would be the only ice cream flavor, but don't be mad at the game for doing exactly what it said it would do.
Learn to accept not everyone will praise what you like or like what you think they should, she's educating viewers not to expect the game to be mindblowing, and honestly, in this economy, 30 bucks is a bit much

This game seems like a great game to wind down with. When I'm stressed, I'm not always looking for a challenge in the games I'm playing to unwind. May have to pick this up. But probably when it's on sale. I don't think I can justify spending $30 for a short game.
I got it for free on the PS plus network service, BUT... if I didn't... I would totally shell the 30 bucks for it if I had to. its a fantastic game. dont listen to the bullshit reviews, listen to the 98% satisfaction rating it has for the majority of people.. yes a great casual experience but an experience everyone must have if they love games.. oh and some sections, they ain't so casual their tense as hell! lol

That's exactly what it is. This game is fucking brilliant. It obviously isn't perfect, but compared to some games that have been released this year, it's amazing. The story is simple and cute, but it's also affective and quite eerie. This game will never be for everyone, but people need to also respect that this is technically a children's game, and also its the first game by a new development team

I'd take the other cat (Little Kitty Big City) game over this any day. It's the dichotomy of modern gaming. Indie full of charm and great gameplay or complex story hyperrealistic mostly cinematic games. I'll take the game where you can BE like a real cat over the one that's made to LOOK like a real cat.
I played both of them and I'd take stray for sure. Little kitty big city is alright overall but the dialog there is so long and broing, + the plot isn't anything crazy. Both are story games and personally I think stray did a great job creating the plot and progressing through the charcters. I don't get the hate🤷♂️
I played this game for like an hour over 2 sessions and I was going crazy of boredom. Just running around as you said on autopilot, because you can't fall off. I was really surprised because the game was so well rated. I'm glad I found this video and that there's people who think alike. I thought something was wrong with me.
I've played a good number of games, but I think there aren't many games where you control animals as well made as Stray. When my friend recommended it to me, I really thought it was just a cat sim that didn't have plot. I just saw the first minute or two of the game and had no idea it was a set in a sci-fi, post apocalyptic world that had actual plot, so it was a nice surprise. I agree that the main attraction to this game is that you control an animal. But the world and plot was a great bonus. I absolutely love exploring and playing in new worlds, it's less complex compared to the big names, so it's great for just chill gaming. I think your review got it pretty on the spot, but I'm most probably just easy to please, because I've watched a couple of reviews including this one where they say nothing is new with the plot, but still, the plot still got me interested. I'm kinda hoping they expand on it.

When I started to see how half-baked the gameplay was, I figured ok... the story must get really good or something. Which is fine! Soma is one of my favorite games of all time because of its story & characters, not its gameplay. But I seem to be nearing the end of Stray and could not be less interested in the cat's journey or anyone s/he meets along the way. It's definitely beautiful to look at. When you're not running around in these industrial gray sewer-like environments (which is maybe most of the game). I really think this was a game the internet decided it loved because the internet loves cats.
I kind of think the internet folks, even the non-cat people, loved the idea of the game, rather than the game itself. It's a very unique game made by a very small company and people will not judge it as critically as they do a game that's a sequel or made by a big company.

I was so hyped for this game cause I'm a total cat person, but I was so disappointed with how boring and tedious the game is. I noticed on my second session I was still under 2 hours of playtime so I submitted a return ticket for it, I almost never return games too. I got to the part my friend says is the real start of the game when you start talking to a bunch of different robots and jumping on top of roofs and can collect and turn in sheet music, but I spent most of my time in that area jumping on ledges that seemed like they'd go somewhere and just lead to dead end corners, not even a little easter egg or a good view of things, like it was punishing me for exploring. The final straw was unplugging some air conditioner on a roof that stopped a fan that allowed me to jump through it to a room and I spent about 10 minutes trying to figure out the significance of that room until I realize all you could do was open up a window that allowed you to save about 10 seconds cutting a corner in an insignificant part of the map. Worse map design I've ever seen. I kinda wanted to give it a chance and see what else it had to offer but I realized I enjoyed literally working my job more than wasting time on any more pointless dead ends.

@@AbeHopwood I know I at least was always under the impression that we were to expect a slower paced and relaxing game and I've seen hype for those types of games plenty of times be fulfilled with fans like with Sable or Pokemon Snap. There's a lot I could criticize about Stray, but I think the most fundamental criticism was that nothing was rewarding for me. Once you get the vibe of a location, exploring that location wasn't fulfilling anymore, just felt like reused assets. A lot of places you had to use some skill to reach didn't offer any kind of collectable, easter egg, or even a good view, just completely pointless dead ends. Slow paced games can be fulfilling by simply rewarding you with visuals or some tiny collectable for exploring, but Stray made exploring feel like was a waste of time. It felt like they designed it to be like an open world but the only way you can enjoy it is by following the intended path and any amount of time veering off that path didn't feel challenging in a fulfilling way, like solving a puzzle, but challenging to my patience, like I've been climbing up this building I thought would lead to something for 5 minutes and gave me absolutely nothing in return other than crossing that whole section of the map off as something I don't have to ever revisit again. Linear games can be fun if they challenge you to figure out the next move with a puzzle or show you a challenge to get to the next move, and it doesn't even have to be a big challenge, just sort of fun and rewarding, or not even a challenge, just continue down the path and have cool things happen. But when the challenge is deducing the right path is the most obvious path, like just continue down the alley, because all other paths that look interesting lead to nothing, it's just a punishing waste of time.
The only thing that's super unique about this game is the movement. That's about it. Kind of mediocre story. I saw people crying over this game and it's ending like you need to get help if you were crying at this game

I personally was looking forward to this because it was based on the Kowloon walled city. Back at first it was titled ‘Project Kowloon’, this was the main inspiration. There’s isn’t much to this game at all really it’s such an easy and short game. Hardly challenging at all. No replayability factor. Definitely overrated but I guess it has mass appeal for young players.

IT HAD PUZZLES? ... I would 'not', categorise those sections as puzzles at all. They felt like fetch quests but worse, somehow. Only made bearable because of my obsession with floof.
I just got Platnium Trophy in this game on Ps5 and it sucks. The trophies really show the problems with this game with how many are luck based such as avoiding a Zurk jumping on you and another is for speedrunning the game in under 2 hours. I'm sure there will be a Stray 2 since this game sold very well on Steam and was placed on PS+ for over a year as a Ps4 and Ps5 title. I'm most definitely avoiding any sequels to this game and it showed me why I shouldn't get wrapped into hype from people. Getting Platnium caused me a lot of rage and it took 3 playthroughs cause I was 6 minutes short on my speedrun. I was beyond bored the entire time.
I think we need simple gameplay controls. I'm tired of having to manage 100 different interfaces and controls with these complicated games. I really don't feel like having to grind out 100 hours of the same gameplay to get to the next point of a game. For that reason I've abandoned some games I used to play. It's so repetitive and boring. Just because you feel this was too easy or simple, doesn't mean it wasn't good. It was an experience....turn off all the lights, grab your best headphones...and enter the world of the game. Meanwhile, people were raving over The Quarry and I thought that was the most boring game ever. Barely any gameplay, mostly dark the entire game, it was just an interactive movie, and it was double the price of stray. My only advice is try the game yourself and experience it. You said the game was cute and you were having a good time during your stream. To me that means, the game did it's job.
Its cute, fun and totally deserve the popularity... It deserve its own place and respect... But to compared it to the recent popular games... This is hardly a challenge.... This game is better played when you having a hard time fighting bosses in other games, or just need something light, then this is obviously for you...
Developpers can throw whatever crap they feel like at your face and you'll always be handing them your cash no matter how terrible what they released is. And then people like you start crying because "devs don't care about customers anymore and release half finished crap". Why would they try harder ? People like you will always be here to pay up no matter how utterly shitty the product ends up being. People like you are the reason why the industry is in the state it's in.
Its a generic, shallow game that's only redeeming factor is the art which even then fails to strike out enough to maintain interest long enough because of failures on part of level design and lack of any genuinely engaging parts. Take the cat out and put a human model in there and what are you left with? Even as a cat game the game fails to remember that its supposed to be a cat game, not long and you're plugging in power plugs, pressing keycodes and doing human stuff because handwavium by flying robot drone that dumps exposition. There isn't enough effort put into it to deserve the praise its getting.

Very true. There's nothing wrong with a narrative game and some simple puzzles, but I very much disliked all the misleading marketing and hype. Look. I'll put it like this. Walking through a dark alley to the night shop for some beer and snacks, isn't special. Being robbed or scammed while doing so, is noteworthy. Being robbed or scammed in said alleyway, but afterwards receiving a cute little furry patch for your jacket... Is this game. People are ok with basically being scammed, because cats. It's a demo, at best. 4/10. And only because it actually functioned, was technically software, without microtransaction BS, and had cats. The bar is truly at Mariana trench levels.
Stray was overrated and boring. They straight up copied the story from city of ember, replaced humans with robots, and added a pathetic little monster.
I love cats, and this game was a huge disappointment. From the trailer and information put out about it, I thought it was going to be a chance to do platforming as a cat. Instead, it's like a simplistic mobile game for kids of holding a button and moving around which ALSO jumps for you, and you can't fall off any ledge. Clearly it just cashed in on strange "Aww look at the kitty" vibes right from the start. The world is really hard to believe or to take seriously, again for the younger audience, physically or mentally.
Probably the ONLY parts I actually enjoyed about stray was it's animation, story, depth. And everything else was kinda "meh" for me. Is that a decent opinion, or am I the only one?
I’m a cat person & I wanted to love this game. But I find this boring & I think the control also made it less immersive. I’m sick of looking for the ‘space’ before I can jump. Plus there’s not much mystery or puzzles or maybe I haven’t gotten to that part since I’ve quit after a 30 mins gameplay.
I like the cat but I agree it's overrated. It doesn't feel like a game, just a linear experience with invisible walls and too much hand holding. I requested a refund.

I totally didn't like the console feeling about it. I played it on a computer and it felt every second like a (kinda bad) console port. And those damn alien rats. These made no sense for me in a game like that. First a puzzle/adventure/simulator kinda game and suddenly you need to die to find out what to do next? That's just BS. I wanted to love it (Cat owner), but I ended up hating it.
I'm glad I got a refund. I might use the money towards The Diofield Chronicles or Harvestella. I bought the game on Steam while expecting to ask for a refund if I wasn't blown away.....and it certainly didn't do that. 7/10 and I'm probably being generous due to the graphics alone.
It's insane that they made a game completely surrounding the day to day life of a cat and neutered the platforming mechanics to remove challenge turning it into a walking simulator.
Do you have any idea how tedious it would be to try and jump onto the tiny platform like handrails without lock on!? Yeah that would have been so much fun, trying to land on tiny ledges and railing and missing most of the time.
Yeah, I thought it was going to be a cool platformer with a cat, and it's all automatic. I genuinely got sad seeing that all it takes is some virtual cats meowing or playing with one another to get praise, but hey, that's the amazing gaming industry now: poor games, microtransactions, planned DLC after 1-2 months of release, and shamelessly monetising everything possible.

Yea,....I was into it for 20 minutes. However, once the novelty wore off and I realized all that was left was a paper-thin plot with barely existent motivation with repetitious simplistic platforming? All the purring and allure of pushing things off the counter in the world couldn't keep me invested.
I'm very happy to get a refund. Played the first 20 minutes, will watch the ending on youtube.....and nothing of value will be lost.
Fyi, I had this game in mind for many months, but it's only 3 out of 5.
I'd rather take a trip to the dentist and get a few of my teeth pulled than have to trudge through this dumpster fire. But this applies to almost every single Sony & MS exclusive. :P

I think the only thing that made this game so beloved is the fact that you control a cat. So many people like cats and cute things. But other than that it's a very generic and simple game.
You are right It's a cat game. But also it looks good and it has ok music. And make you stress down a little. Sleeping on one spot for 1 h(trofé) wasen't a problem at all because everything was so nice.

Not every game needs complex mechanics, in fact I wish less games did, real life is complex enough for me, haha. The thing is, cats are simple beings to begin with, so it's.. quite immersive to have a simplistic gameplay loop in cat game.

@@p0ltergeisha I really don't get this complaint from her. Everybody can have their own opinions but I don't think this game was ever meant to be difficult. It was always meant to be an experience before being a game. It just so happens that it has enough gameplay in it to keep the player engaged with the gameplay rather than the world but the gameplay is only really there to just drive you into this world.
It was a very relaxing game for what it was. I like hard games, I raid in MMOs on hardest content but sometimes you just need a change of pace and I think Stray delivered that masterfully. If there are any complains to be had from me then it would be the clunky jump mechanics though they did their job well enough and probably it would be nice to have 1 more major arc to the story before the wrap up to maybe get the 'Elite' robots view on the world. Like first we started in slums, then we moved up to one upper level then I wanted to see the 'higher' class of robots but the game wrapped up early.

Like she said, if you are someone relatively new to gaming, a young kid, and/or a cat fanatic, this game is for you. Describing the game as unchallenging and simple are only negative descriptions if you're looking for complexity and challenge. I love cats, but my problem with this game was that I didn’t actually feel like a cat. The way the cat was able to talk and understand humans and do “human things” made it feel more like a “human brain inside a cat” game.
The only good part was the beginning, when there was no talking and you had to use pure instinct to navigate the environment.

Just got done playing Elden Ring for 430 hours. Since I have PS plus extra, was able to play this for free. Can't say I was disappointed. It was kind of cute, kind of funny, mostly relaxing after my arduous journey to become a platinum Elden Lord. Not every game needs to kick your ass every inch of the way and hope you fail. Sometimes you need a break from that.

This is something a lot of people don't realise, they treat everything as if it's meant to be the next God of War or from software game, as if it's meant to have fast paced combat with lots of strategy. Games like this exist to let you take a break from all that, just to sit back and relax, and I feel like that's where its getting its decent reviews from, people are glad we have a games like this. And on top of all that, it's only 25 bucks, some games like this go up to 60, and we also have to note this is the first game by a brand new development company
Lol, this game will kick arse if you go for Platnium Trophy cause it isn't easy at all. One has you avoiding Zurks catching you during an alley way chase that is luck based. The other difficult one is for completing the game in under 2 hours. That leaves you with no room for error as a good run will leave 10-15 minutes to spare. I just got Platnium and it took me 3 playthrough cause I was 5 minutes too late on my speedrun playthrough.

I like a lot of the setting and details in this game even if I don't like cats but I don't think I'd ever buy it knowing the game play lacks actual platforming. I've never been a fan of games that remove challenge from traversing by making everything basically canned animation button presses.

I cant understand the love this game is getting. I got this game refunded as its one of the most disapointing games ive played. I kept waiting for the game to kick in. Its a totally linear walking simulator, its not a puzzler at all. PS. I love cats.
I would happily pay 30 dollars for a walking simulator with a compelling narrative (Soma, Firewatch, Edith Finch all come to mind) but Stray doesn't even have that. Really glad I didn't buy this game and only played it as part of ps plus premium. I'd want a refund too.

I love cats and was excited about this but the fact that you play as a cat is irrelevant, the main character is actually the robot companion, you could be controlling a dog and nothing would change either from a plot or gameplay perspective since all the cat behavior is through prompts.

Nier is not a good game, it would have been better as a movie, fighting is just button mashing, you can do some cool shit but button mashing is the best option, side quests and open world are completely inconsequential to the story. I completed 2/3 of quests as 2B and then realised they are totally useless so i just did main missions. Everyone likes the game just because it made them feel sad for robots and think about philosophy a bit, story is nice but gameplay is utter garbage. 5/10 game for me because 50% of the game is playing the game which is more boring than reading lady robots thoughts about Jean Paul.

The game is about the story not the game play. It's about the worldbuilding, it's basically What became of Edith Finch style game. And I loved it for that. The fact that people are complaining about the gameplay is like being mad because Sims isn't an FPS. You don't have to like the game, if we all liked the same thing, vanilla would be the only ice cream flavor, but don't be mad at the game for doing exactly what it said it would do.
Learn to accept not everyone will praise what you like or like what you think they should, she's educating viewers not to expect the game to be mindblowing, and honestly, in this economy, 30 bucks is a bit much

This game seems like a great game to wind down with. When I'm stressed, I'm not always looking for a challenge in the games I'm playing to unwind. May have to pick this up. But probably when it's on sale. I don't think I can justify spending $30 for a short game.

That's exactly what it is. This game is fucking brilliant. It obviously isn't perfect, but compared to some games that have been released this year, it's amazing. The story is simple and cute, but it's also affective and quite eerie. This game will never be for everyone, but people need to also respect that this is technically a children's game, and also its the first game by a new development team

I'd take the other cat (Little Kitty Big City) game over this any day. It's the dichotomy of modern gaming. Indie full of charm and great gameplay or complex story hyperrealistic mostly cinematic games.
I'll take the game where you can BE like a real cat over the one that's made to LOOK like a real cat.
I played both of them and I'd take stray for sure. Little kitty big city is alright overall but the dialog there is so long and broing, + the plot isn't anything crazy. Both are story games and personally I think stray did a great job creating the plot and progressing through the charcters. I don't get the hate🤷♂️
I played this game for like an hour over 2 sessions and I was going crazy of boredom. Just running around as you said on autopilot, because you can't fall off. I was really surprised because the game was so well rated. I'm glad I found this video and that there's people who think alike. I thought something was wrong with me.
I've played a good number of games, but I think there aren't many games where you control animals as well made as Stray.
When my friend recommended it to me, I really thought it was just a cat sim that didn't have plot.
I just saw the first minute or two of the game and had no idea it was a set in a sci-fi, post apocalyptic world that had actual plot, so it was a nice surprise. I agree that the main attraction to this game is that you control an animal. But the world and plot was a great bonus. I absolutely love exploring and playing in new worlds, it's less complex compared to the big names, so it's great for just chill gaming.
I think your review got it pretty on the spot, but I'm most probably just easy to please, because I've watched a couple of reviews including this one where they say nothing is new with the plot, but still, the plot still got me interested. I'm kinda hoping they expand on it.

When I started to see how half-baked the gameplay was, I figured ok... the story must get really good or something. Which is fine! Soma is one of my favorite games of all time because of its story & characters, not its gameplay. But I seem to be nearing the end of Stray and could not be less interested in the cat's journey or anyone s/he meets along the way. It's definitely beautiful to look at. When you're not running around in these industrial gray sewer-like environments (which is maybe most of the game). I really think this was a game the internet decided it loved because the internet loves cats.
I kind of think the internet folks, even the non-cat people, loved the idea of the game, rather than the game itself.
It's a very unique game made by a very small company and people will not judge it as critically as they do a game that's a sequel or made by a big company.

I was so hyped for this game cause I'm a total cat person, but I was so disappointed with how boring and tedious the game is. I noticed on my second session I was still under 2 hours of playtime so I submitted a return ticket for it, I almost never return games too. I got to the part my friend says is the real start of the game when you start talking to a bunch of different robots and jumping on top of roofs and can collect and turn in sheet music, but I spent most of my time in that area jumping on ledges that seemed like they'd go somewhere and just lead to dead end corners, not even a little easter egg or a good view of things, like it was punishing me for exploring. The final straw was unplugging some air conditioner on a roof that stopped a fan that allowed me to jump through it to a room and I spent about 10 minutes trying to figure out the significance of that room until I realize all you could do was open up a window that allowed you to save about 10 seconds cutting a corner in an insignificant part of the map. Worse map design I've ever seen. I kinda wanted to give it a chance and see what else it had to offer but I realized I enjoyed literally working my job more than wasting time on any more pointless dead ends.

@@AbeHopwood I know I at least was always under the impression that we were to expect a slower paced and relaxing game and I've seen hype for those types of games plenty of times be fulfilled with fans like with Sable or Pokemon Snap. There's a lot I could criticize about Stray, but I think the most fundamental criticism was that nothing was rewarding for me. Once you get the vibe of a location, exploring that location wasn't fulfilling anymore, just felt like reused assets. A lot of places you had to use some skill to reach didn't offer any kind of collectable, easter egg, or even a good view, just completely pointless dead ends. Slow paced games can be fulfilling by simply rewarding you with visuals or some tiny collectable for exploring, but Stray made exploring feel like was a waste of time. It felt like they designed it to be like an open world but the only way you can enjoy it is by following the intended path and any amount of time veering off that path didn't feel challenging in a fulfilling way, like solving a puzzle, but challenging to my patience, like I've been climbing up this building I thought would lead to something for 5 minutes and gave me absolutely nothing in return other than crossing that whole section of the map off as something I don't have to ever revisit again. Linear games can be fun if they challenge you to figure out the next move with a puzzle or show you a challenge to get to the next move, and it doesn't even have to be a big challenge, just sort of fun and rewarding, or not even a challenge, just continue down the path and have cool things happen. But when the challenge is deducing the right path is the most obvious path, like just continue down the alley, because all other paths that look interesting lead to nothing, it's just a punishing waste of time.
The only thing that's super unique about this game is the movement. That's about it. Kind of mediocre story. I saw people crying over this game and it's ending like you need to get help if you were crying at this game
Uh yeah. Everyone kinda already knows this. It's a cute cat game. Nobody expected it to be the most complex and insightful gae ever made. Just let people have fun

I personally was looking forward to this because it was based on the Kowloon walled city. Back at first it was titled ‘Project Kowloon’, this was the main inspiration. There’s isn’t much to this game at all really it’s such an easy and short game. Hardly challenging at all. No replayability factor. Definitely overrated but I guess it has mass appeal for young players.

My only complaint about the game is: why can't the cat see in the dark and why does it behave like a human?
I just got Platnium Trophy in this game on Ps5 and it sucks. The trophies really show the problems with this game with how many are luck based such as avoiding a Zurk jumping on you and another is for speedrunning the game in under 2 hours. I'm sure there will be a Stray 2 since this game sold very well on Steam and was placed on PS+ for over a year as a Ps4 and Ps5 title. I'm most definitely avoiding any sequels to this game and it showed me why I shouldn't get wrapped into hype from people. Getting Platnium caused me a lot of rage and it took 3 playthroughs cause I was 6 minutes short on my speedrun. I was beyond bored the entire time.

I think we need simple gameplay controls. I'm tired of having to manage 100 different interfaces and controls with these complicated games. I really don't feel like having to grind out 100 hours of the same gameplay to get to the next point of a game. For that reason I've abandoned some games I used to play. It's so repetitive and boring. Just because you feel this was too easy or simple, doesn't mean it wasn't good. It was an experience....turn off all the lights, grab your best headphones...and enter the world of the game. Meanwhile, people were raving over The Quarry and I thought that was the most boring game ever. Barely any gameplay, mostly dark the entire game, it was just an interactive movie, and it was double the price of stray. My only advice is try the game yourself and experience it. You said the game was cute and you were having a good time during your stream. To me that means, the game did it's job.

Developpers can throw whatever crap they feel like at your face and you'll always be handing them your cash no matter how terrible what they released is. And then people like you start crying because "devs don't care about customers anymore and release half finished crap". Why would they try harder ? People like you will always be here to pay up no matter how utterly shitty the product ends up being. People like you are the reason why the industry is in the state it's in.
Its a generic, shallow game that's only redeeming factor is the art which even then fails to strike out enough to maintain interest long enough because of failures on part of level design and lack of any genuinely engaging parts. Take the cat out and put a human model in there and what are you left with? Even as a cat game the game fails to remember that its supposed to be a cat game, not long and you're plugging in power plugs, pressing keycodes and doing human stuff because handwavium by flying robot drone that dumps exposition.
There isn't enough effort put into it to deserve the praise its getting.

Very true. There's nothing wrong with a narrative game and some simple puzzles, but I very much disliked all the misleading marketing and hype. It was sold as an action game and cat ecperience and even got nominated in such categories in awards shows. I purchased it on that basis and it feels like a bait and switch
Again, the game as is is fine since walking simulators are allowed to exist for people who like them, but misleading customers is not. And I'm flabbergasted how many fans would tell you it absolutely is an action game, a platformer, and a cat simulator; it really is none of these things

I personally agree a lot with this, not just because of the cute cat part, but it also has an interesting story.
I love cats, and this game was a huge disappointment. From the trailer and information put out about it, I thought it was going to be a chance to do platforming as a cat. Instead, it's like a simplistic mobile game for kids of holding a button and moving around which ALSO jumps for you, and you can't fall off any ledge. Clearly it just cashed in on strange "Aww look at the kitty" vibes right from the start. The world is really hard to believe or to take seriously, again for the younger audience, physically or mentally.

I’m a cat person & I wanted to love this game. But I find this boring & I think the control also made it less immersive. I’m sick of looking for the ‘space’ before I can jump. Plus there’s not much mystery or puzzles or maybe I haven’t gotten to that part since I’ve quit after a 30 mins gameplay.

I'm glad I got a refund. I might use the money towards The Diofield Chronicles or Harvestella. I bought the game on Steam while expecting to ask for a refund if I wasn't blown away.....and it certainly didn't do that. 7/10 and I'm probably being generous due to the graphics alone.
