Gary's story was more complicated than that. "The wrong crowd" you are referring to, was indeed, other race car drivers as well as others directly involved with stock car racing in one way or another. Now how could he "avoid" them? He was around them at nearly every race. Everyone knew Gary possessed the talent as one of the very best drivers, and that struggle to finally make it into Cup racing made the temptation of joining several other drivers & guys involved in the sport, to smuggle tons of marijuana was just too hard for him to turn down. He never smuggled any other type of drug. He also made the rather good point that NASCAR was created off of moonshine runners, and contends that smuggling marijuana is really no different. Several of our nation's founding Fathers were smugglers too ya know, such as Thomas Jefferson. He was a rum runner. When you consider we have a terribly corrupt government, a "federal" banking system that was fraudulent from the get-go and is privately operated from off-shore scammers, not to mention all of the federal alphabet agencies that are scams too, even big pharma.......and how NONE of those wicked people in power are ever charged & convicted of a crime........smuggling marijuana is small potatoes. I don't condone what he did.........but the man wasn't a criminal who was stealing, harming, or even killing We the people the way our own government & all the aforementioned agencies & entities do on a regular ongoing basis.

Oh there is another great Gary Balough story dealing with his time at dirt. He showed up to Super Dirt Week with a can that was completely unconventional at the time that actually used aerodynamics to pin the car to the clay. He comfortably won the race. The car was nicknamed the called the Batmobile and he more then likely single handedly pulled Northeast Modified dirt racing forward but several years because of it.

Thankfully it wound up being an "Upgrade" for Kyle who Hendrick has stated he planned to sign him the entire time even prior to the Slur upon Jimmie Johnson's retirement. As he should have been trying to when Jeff Gordon told him to prior and kyle wound up signing with CHIP. Valuable years lost.
