      Thanks Mike. I worry that I burned myself out on projects. I still have a few small ones left and am having a hell of a time motivating myself for them.

    You know, you guys are so lucky to both be able to work on the boat and its various sections. Not only that but to do so with a sense of humour. Just wonderful.

      Hi Brad. Indeed. We do see couples out and about that chafe under the tight living arrangements that come with the cruising life. But we've been lucky and I am blessed every day to have Wendy with me. Our life is one of relative ease in terms of our relationship and it really does make things fun. I always joke that I can edit things to make them look however I want them to look, but it really is a joke. I have to look like a real idiot before I choose not to include the footage. If there's a lesson to be learned, in it goes.

    Always amazed by the sheer volume and variety of Skills in your Tool Box. You've given me so much insight on what to look for and what to upgrade before moving onboard. Coming from the Construction Industry I know Living in the middle of any renovation is a Nightmare.

      Hi Bruce. Thanks for the kind words, and of course you're correct in what you say. Probably the best insight I can offer folks looking to buy a boat is to recommend that they pay the extra money required to buy a boat that's already been upgraded by someone else (assuming they did the work well). Thinking that you'll save money by doing tasks yourself doesn't really pay off. The easiest way to see the proof of this is that "investments" you make in your boat will never pay off dollar for dollar. There's just no way to get modern parts and systems for any kind of materially discounted price.

    We think Wendy is the Winch Queen! Sunbrella defo the best. We have some hatch covers to do when we get half an hour spare. Good informative stuff guys. Sail safe. Ant & Cid with the pooch crew xx

    Wow, what an upgrade. I'm sure you've already thought of the energy savings you'll have. You probably knew how thick your hull was, but to see it and hold it in your hand must give you a warm and fuzzy feeling. I think I'd have it hanging somewhere just as a reminder how well built a hull you have👍😊

    Awesome look at the two independent Frigoboat Keel Cooler units. The evaporator plates in the Refeer and Freezer look great. Did you get the Merlin speed control and Guardian Digital Thermostat? Ever think about a small LED light strip in the Refeer that turns on with an open door?

    • @SailingTalisman
      @SailingTalisman  5 лет назад

      We have a small halogen light that lights the refrigerator, so we do have light. Maybe I'll keep an eye out for an LED bulb, but it's pretty low usage.

    Good afternoon Wendy and Kevin. How did you weather the storm that went through Greece? I hope you are safe and did not have any problems.
    Michael

    • @SailingTalisman
      @SailingTalisman  5 лет назад

      Hi Michael. We knew it was coming, which a lot of people didn't. In fact, we'd seen the track almost 4 days earlier, and it was a monster. But it was also way off the screens if you were zoomed in too much on Windy or Predict Wind. In the Ionian, everything was very calm with no wind, and the system actually arrived late. By that time people were talking about it and that helped cruisers if they were in port. We'd arrived in Gaios and being that it was early in the morning, I had a broad choice of spots. We opted for a space behind the island, with the entrance channel to our left and the main harbor to our right. This seemed the most protected spot, which it turned out to be. When the weather hit it went from zero to blowing 40 knots in about 20 minutes. Most of the damage to boats came from people being desperate to be in port and therefore picking the last spots that others had passed on. Being at anchor with a well set hook would have been the preferable move, but charterers especially were scared to do this. Many boats were damaged by rolling back and forth and having the masts and standing rigging hit. It was mayhem.

    Hi guys, good job with the tutorials. I am wondering if you remember on which episode you tackled the hood inmast roller furler motor. I am trying to figure out how to service mine which is electric. Could you also tell me if your switch os a rocker switch or does it run until switched off. It's tricky to switch and it sometimes goes past the middle and engages the opposite way. Thanks for the insight. If you have any pics o f what to grease/oil i would love to see them. Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work and positive vibes. Fairwinds!

      @SailingTalisman  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Ricardo. Eps 47 and 48 address the furler fail and rebuild. Ours is made by Hood Formula, and they have a nice tutorial on how to tear it down and rebuild. Contact me via Facebook Messenger off list if you can't get that from Formula. But it sounds like you might have a different brand and if that's the case the tutorial won't be of any value. Better to contact the actual manufacturer. If there are switches designed to stop the sail from going too far in or some such, I'd try to bypass them as controlling the sail manually with the least number of failure-prone idiot switches the better. By far, the motor upgrade was the thing that brought the furler back to life (aside from getting the working innards functioning as designed). Our sail can be wound either way on the foil, and Formula recommends winding the sail in whatever direction doesn't pull the sail around the lip of the furling slot. In other words, if you're furling in with some wind and you still have a lightly loaded sail, you wind it in the direction where it rolls onto the upwind side of foil, not the back side, where it would have to pull the sail cloth at a harsh angle around the slot.

    I'm guessing you could get rid of the fish eye effect on the photo by using a longer focal length lens and taking the photo from a long distance.

      It's a GoPro thing. We're extremely low tech, using action cameras for everything. GoPro's camera lenses are actually quite good in my opinion and we find that the size of the camera dictates whether we end up filming at all. Our channel is a hobby, as you might suspect. We try not to take it or ourselves too seriously. Hope all is well in your corner of the world.

    What is the Juki machine type?

    • @SailingTalisman
      @SailingTalisman  5 лет назад +1

      Juki has all sorts of industrial machines, but ours is a 241H if I'm not mistaken. And what you say about equipment is spot on. I get comments all the time about how to cobble together obsolete equipment and always end up thinking "and you're going to stake your life and/or boat on that?" We recently saw a community edit on Navionics warning about a submerged sea wall the commenters hit at a harbor entrance that was "not on" the outdated paper charts they were using at the time. I guess they upgraded to more modern electronic charts after that.

    • @gigiservola142
      @gigiservola142 5 лет назад

      Thanks for the information about Juki machine.
      I have a bit of « problem » with almost all electronic carts!
      To be more precise:
      1. Where in the chart is stated that the chart is updated ? 2. Where it is stated to which date correspond the chart?
      3. Where it is stated which type of cartographic data are used?
      I’ve seen sailors « sailing » over hard ground, over two miles away from their actual position, with a latest chart plotter and latest charts ( this is what the sailor thought!)
      National authorities are editing paper charts, updates and all sorts of useful informations. How many electronic charts editors update their products?
      A plotter is of help but IMHO we shall always sail with a paper chart’

      Thanks David. As you can probably imagine, I do architectural design and drafting as part of my professional life, and thus have the software from there. I would never drop that kind of money just to draw sunshades and curtains. SoftPlan is a truly amazing full 3D drafting and rendering program. But boy does it do the job for something simple like figuring out how to get the max number of polygons into a given roll of fabric. Anyway, thanks so much for being with us.

    Did a previous owner ladle Mariine grease on the winches?

    • @SailingTalisman
      @SailingTalisman  5 лет назад

      I'd imagine so. There was way more in there than Lewmar recommends, so Wendy stripped it all down to bare metal before reapplying per their technical videos. Important to not grease the pawls. These get pawl oil only.
